Back in 1994 I learned how to drive in my mom's 1986 IROC-Z. They aren't the fastest cars on Earth but they drive like silk. Looks beautiful and drives just as beautiful. When they had basic maintenance kept up with they'd last for years.
I had a Black1986 IROC Z28 with a grey bra to go with the black and grey interior when the "T-tops" where off! Nice car! Miss it! That's a good looking 1970 Chevelle SS sitting in the garage! I had one of those, also! I can't believe how well that car cleaned up.... especially in Massachusetts!!!
My stepdaughter is helping my rebuild my 71 Monte Carlo SS I've had since 89. I was gonna give it to my son for his 18. But since she's the one out there next to me working on it every time. I'm giving it to her.
This will be a great and fun project car. These cars used to be everywhere, but after cash for clunkers so many were destroyed. So it's great to see you guys are going to restore this! I still have my 84 that I had in high school, I restored it about 15 years ago.
It’s a beautiful car and it can be beautiful however they want to build it. Don’t be that guy telling people to leave their cars stock just because you don’t wanna turn a wrench
@@BackwoodsGarageLLC. Thank you but I have turned plenty of wrenches. I'm just saying that it very hard to find IROC's in original shape, so many have been souped up and modified. That car is so original it would be a shame to see it modified.
Back in 1994, I almost bought an 88 IROC in a dark grey that was in mint condition, but the fellow wouldn't budge off of 8 grand, which I didn't have. My dad brought me back to reality when he said I would most likely have to park it in the winter (I'm from around Vancouver, BC, and winters were several feet of snow for months back then). I landed up getting a 1990 Chevy Beretta. It was nice and essentially a snowmobile, but I always regretted not getting the IROC.
Hell of a nice car for a new driver , at least it’s not a civic or other foreign car…these cars were the rage when I was in high school and went a few more years after I was out ….it’s in pretty good shape I’d repaint it put the correct decals back on and in the right positions and your kid will have a badass ride
I have a 1986 Camaro Iroc Z. Picked her up about 10 years ago. It’s the Black / Gold Color Combo. I had a Red 1984 Camaro Z-28 in HS. I’ve always loved these cars! Have fun with the new-old ride!
I turn 45 tomorrow and this has been my dream car ever since the first iroc came out in this generation. I remember watching the IROC races with these all painted in bright colors with so many great drivers behind the wheel. Such a cool car man! Enjoy! I’ll be watching.
If someone has tried to jack it up and got the bottom the fender instead, that’ll make the fender become misaligned like that as well. Great video, Love Those Cars!
I owned a 1984 Camaro that I bought new. I had the car until 1992 when I sold it. Overall we really like the car. Our car was light blue (I think they called it Cadet Blue at the time). After about 5 years the primer coat started to disintegrate which caused the top coat to come off in sheets. The primer had actually turned to powder and lost all adhesion to both the metal as well as the paint. The only cure would have been to bring the car back down to bare metal and start over. On some cars GM stepped up and admitted they had a problem but not in my case.
I can honestly say I'm envious. I had an '89 IROC-Z, red like that but with t-tops. Loved the legroom, the space, and I loved the ride. Makes me want to go find another one. Hope your son enjoys the journey getting it back on the road, looking good, and driving it! Kudos on it beingba family project, too!
Great find! My first real car (I don't count the first two) was a 1987 IROC-Z with the 5.0L TPI/700R4 combo. I loved that car, and still regret trading it in all these years later. If I could find another IROC-Z (or GTA) in that condition, I would buy it, no question. What a great father/son project!
I am a mustang guy myself, but this is still a beautiful car. Good luck with the restoration. Hopefully this young man is enjoying this time with his dad
If the engine is hurt and it's a 305, either switch it up to a 350 or a 383 Crate engine ... OR ... consider a used 5.3 LS out of a truck. The used 5.3 will run better, be cheaper and give you more room under the hood to work on it. Plenty of companies sell the parts to LS swap these cars. When done correctly, an LS swap is the way to go.
Nice car!!! I had a black 1989 RS. It was a 305 5 speed and TBI. I have a 2 volume set factory shop manuals if you are interested. I'm in Springfield MA. Any parts you may need I would suggest Classic Industries in California. Good luck, Mike
I had an 88 TPI 5.0 5speed Iroc Z. Looked beautiful in Gunmetal Grey. Made plenty of torque for what it was and was very forgiving when pushed to its limits in corners. So much fun!
Nice first car buddy! I hope you enjoy it. I was a Mustang guy back then, but always liked those Z28s. Those and Mustangs pretty much bookended American car culture in the 80s. It should be a good one!
Congrats, Declan! I owned a 68 SS convertible for 23 years. It was my first car and it taught me everything I know about working on cars. Glad you have a supportive dad to guide you. My dad was no help to me as he wasn't a car guy. Great, inspirational project. Best of luck to you, lads!
I had a Red 1990 Trans Am with T-Tops. I absolutely loved that car! One of my favorites, if not the favorite I’ve had! Was my first real muscle car. Though it only had the gutless 5.0, at least it was a TPI car and I loved it!!! I would give almost anything to have that exact car back, and I’ve looked several times over the years, and I’m pretty sure it ended up in the crusher:( I’m curious, is yours a 5.0 or a 5.7 car?
@@teamgmotorsports The 68 had a 350. Loads of guts and it revved up to 6500 without a problem. I only wish it was stick. Sold it to a dear friend and he sends me pictures from time to time. Better than having a garage queen in a bubble;)
I had this same car, mine was 1989 model that I bought it brand new in 1988. It was a RS with 305 V-8, and positrack. I loved that car. smashed it up pretty good.
I was 18 when those cars came out, I loved them ! That rear window acted like a sunroom on those rear seats and after time just baked those seat tops off. Yours look really good (from what I could see). Nice find.
My last IROC was an 89, it was a fun project. Wish I still had it, I'd put an LS and transmission in from a Silverado and drive the snizzot out of it. You guys will enjoy this one!

That’s awesome , my dad and I rebuilt a 75 camaro back in the mid 80’s , dropped in an 83 corvette 350 engine , redid all the interior , repainted the car red and blk , it was a very fast car , I wish I still had that car .
Awesome video! Reminds me of my first car and my dad helping me getting it set up right. Was a smogged out 81 Z28 with a 350. Not much horsepower but the torque made it fun. The junkyards were a treasure trove for anything we needed to replace like those smelly seats you guys were talking about. It’s been a long time since then but I’m actually fixing up an 87 Formula for me and my son to cruise in and I found a junk yard that still has tons of third gen F body parts he stashed away. So they are still out there if you guys feel like doing a little hunting.
Congrats. It's a fun car to drive--I've had my '88 (5spd, 305, t-tops) for 36 years now. I also had a bra on the car (still have it in the garage), but mine was the same maroon color as the car so it blends in with the car. My wife and a friend "overhauled" me by stealing the car and getting repainted for my 51st birthday because of the clearcoat issue.
Looking really good!! FYI if you get natural lump charcoal it plus baking soda will absorb odors so well it’s amazing. Really charcoal not the pressed wood chip stuff the old stuff that people use to smoke meat that is just wood burned in a low oxygen environment. Also this is really cool if your overflow and windshield reservoir are not brittle empty them out and use Oxi-clean mixed in water and seal it where you can fill without air bubbles and then sink them in a container with more Oxi-clean water. DO NOT put the black cap in the mix that’s a hard lesson learned for me.
Absolutely love it! My dream car when I was in high school. I now own a 2013 c6 corvette and 2024 mustang gt and I STILL want one of these. I’ve been on the lookout for the last couple years. Hope to find one soon. Good luck with her gents!
I Have Owned 5 of these cars , all registered at the same time, These cars Handle like a corvette, I had a 88 Iroc I turned into a 10 sec car, They are also easy to turn from automatic to standard, 5 speed, But do a factory change, and it will look like it was Built that way, Your son will Love this car, Change all bushings in the Suspension, it will tighten everything up, and Handle like new, Good Luck with your New car.
Friendly tip, while you have the interior gutted, cut out an access panel on the rear deck for an easier fuel pump replacement in the future. The new carpet will cover it up. Purists will tell you not to do it, but I think with a driver car and not an immaculate show car, it’s the right choice. Great car, love the father and son project.
Just no, it's lazy and what's the kiddo learn? How to hack up a car and cover it up versus learning to fix it the correct way. Just my opinion, plenty have of course done it your way. I've always chosen the right way and had to do maybe 8-10 over the years.
First engine I ever built was a 350 for a red 85 iroc. Ported the heads myself. Put 4.11s a t5 and carbed it. The thing hauled ass. 20 years and many builds later now.
I like this project plus, we’re both around the same age and remember these cars when new! I had a Z back in 1988…loved it! I subscribed to follow this resurrection! I’m working on a 1990 mustang GT, here in Connecticut, we’re neighbors. Hope to see that iroc running!?
Loved the body style of this gen of Camaro, I bought a Black 82 Camaro IROC with a Muncie 4spd no engine, was swapping the 305cid out of my 82 GMC truck to put in a 4 bolt 350 I built, and stuck that 305 into that Camaro, which was what was originally in it, boy did she move with that 4 spd compared to the auto that it was hooked to in the truck, Great project for you and your Son he will love driving it. Make it pretty again and purr like a kitten.
@@Carl_Jr I wish I could attach a pic of my Camaro, it was a 1982 black Camaro with the emblems on the side, rear bumper and clearly says IROC on them, it was never repainted and original paint and emblems, thats all I know. it does not say IROC-Z just IROC, stock it had a 305cid with a muncie 4 speed, all the bells and whistles too. Was a very quick car with the stock 305, in fact it wanted to chirp the tire in every gear lol, I finally sold it as it was way to much fun to go fast and it was going to get me in alot of trouble cause well you know, I just had to give her what she wanted, lots of gas.
@@keyper555it was just a z28 that someone bought oem factory stickers and applied them…first year for irocs was 1985… look at your front clip and this cars clip yours being a 82’ had more squared look and fog lights should be higher up & middle of front clip will have vent holes…
Back in the eighties I was stationed at Laughlin AFB TX. We had Mustang GT's Escort GT's, Trans-Ams, and IROZ Z's in the dorm parking lot!!!! I had a 88 Escort GT myself.
Solid start. Take care when editing the video that voice and music are about the same level, if voice is too low viewers turn up the volume, then get blasted with music. Also not a priority item, but sun-faded seatbelts are likely to snap in a crash, providing minimal or no protection. They should be replaced when you start taking the car places rather than around the block. Subscribed.
I didn't notice anything wrong. Are you losing your hearing? People's voices are the first thing that gets harder to hear when your hearing starts to go.
Enjoyed the video. You might look into an ozone machine. They cost about $85 but it kills all sorts of bad smells. Just leave it running overnight in the car.
The passenger fender bowed out is from someone lifting the car on the lower fender mount thinking it is a pinch weld. Have to lift it on the subframe rails. Have to straighten the mount and it will pull the bow out. Also seats from a 4th gen bolt in, easy fix for the seats 99-2002. The rear seats are a little narrower across the back, but bolt in.
Drop the oil pan first to clean out the sludge and then fill with fresh oil and engine flush . Put some atf and oil in each cylinder through the spark plug port and let it soak for a few days . Then do test the engine to see if it is seized and if moves then try to turn it over . This is probably the most important step in n restoration of an engine. Good luck!!!!
Nice transformation! And cool car. I highly recommend learning the cars abilities and sharpening the new driver’s skills by participating at Street Survival in CT, a teen defensive driving program, at a private test-track. As an instructor, I’ve seen huge improvements in teenage drivers. We’ve had students from Mass and as far as Long Island and New Jersey attend. Next school is in the Fall.
I had a red 85' IROC Z. My first car. I should have kept it. It was very rare, no t-top, roll-up windows, and a 4 barrel 305. It blew away tuned port inj IROC's that had all the extra weight.
There were plenty of cool gm cars around this time ..87’ cutlass supremes , 88 Monte Carlo Ss’s , 87 grand prix’s 87’ grand nationals..irocs , formulas, trans ams , gm had a lot of nice sports cars..just like in the late 60’s and early 70’s gm had a ton of nice muscle cars..
The passenger fender bowing out like that is from someone jacking on the pinch weld. The bottom bolt for the fender goes through the pinch weld and it's really common for that to be jacked on and folded over on these. You can bend it back straight with some pliers, and if it's really bad it can be hammer and dollied.
Had a 1985 Iroc Z28 in mello yellow. Fanatastic car, motor if a 305 should be rock solid. Unfortunately everything else will drop off the car. Enjoy restoring it. It's a classic car that i still very much miss. (My sister got mine tboned with her first drive) Let me know if your ever willing to sell it. Still looking to get one to rebuild and they are getting very hard to find in Canada. Cheers!
Poppy's patina wipe on clear coat to protect what you have there. If you ever feel like repainting it get it done professionally please this thing is so cool and I'm super jealous of this kid!
Sub'd. Cant wait to see the progress. Grew up with these cars running around, and I always liked them. Great find! I would love to sneek a peak at the Chevelle too!
We’ll be working on the Chevelle too! Not exactly sure when it will make it’s first appearance but there are definitely a few parts in the garage that need to go on it so it should be soon!
The fenders sticking out is from it being jacked up improperly, which bends the pinch welds. If it's not bad you can bend them back down with some pliers, then loosen the bolt on the bottom of the fender and it'll slide back down.
I'm sure somebody else has told you in the comments, but that fender misalignment on the passenger side is super common. I had an 83 myself, same misalignment. A buddy of mine has a 91, he had to get it fixed.
Had a 89 IROC with the optional 5.7 had set of bilsteins and Kenny Brown welded in half roll cage and it was bone stock with borla exhaust . The way it was geared it was quick for the time period. A 16 year old girl ran a stop sign and totaled it back in 2004 . It was a sad day. car was repainted black by dealer because of clear coat recall. The gap on the fenders is from shops not lifting the car correctly.
Congrats on starting a channel! I Just subscribed! It will take a while to get subs and monetized, it will come, dont worry. Keep making great content and people will watch! As an owner of these cars when they were new, they hit a sweet spot. Keep it up!
@Carl_Jr yeah i was hoping for you because that year you couldn't get a 5.7 with ttops so I was very hopeful it was a 5.7 but it's OK that 5.0 will be just fine for your boy
Are you sure it's your sons car? Just saying. 😂 Have the best of times doing this with him. You both deserve to have good moments together and you will cherish those moments forever. Car is fabulous by the way. By the way, these were built in Ste-therese, Quebec about 10 minutes from my house. Plant closed a longtime ago and it was quite a tragedy for us. But hey, back to the car.
These were not built in Canada, that’s the 4 th gens 93-02’ these were built in Norwood Ohio till 87’ when the plant closed and were built in van nuys CA at same time and became the main building plant once Norwood closed in 87’ last American built Camaro till 92’ and then van nuys closed…cool video on RUclips called the last 3rd gen , guy ordered a 92 z28 and got to walk the line with it being built and had everyone sign their name all over car as it was going down the line.
Let the kid do the work he'll appreciate and care for it much more when he invest some blood sweat and tears. Great video

Looks damn good. Hope y'all enjoy the journey and the destination.
The first IROC-Z was 1985
@@Carl_Jr I wish I could attach a pic of my Camaro, it was a 1982 black Camaro with the emblems on the side, rear bumper and clearly says IROC on them, it was never repainted and original paint and emblems, thats all I know. it does not say IROC-Z just IROC, stock it had a 305cid with a muncie 4 speed, all the bells and whistles too. Was a very quick car with the stock 305, in fact it wanted to chirp the tire in every gear lol, I finally sold it as it was way to much fun to go fast and it was going to get me in alot of trouble cause well you know, I just had to give her what she wanted, lots of gas.
@@keyper555 You could post a video of the picture. That's kinda how RUclips works.
@@keyper555it was just a z28 that someone bought oem factory stickers and applied them…first year for irocs was 1985… look at your front clip and this cars clip yours being a 82’ had more squared look and fog lights should be higher up & middle of front clip will have vent holes…
very nice car, love to see the progress you’ll make, keep it stock
Back in the eighties I was stationed at Laughlin AFB TX. We had Mustang GT's Escort GT's, Trans-Ams, and IROZ Z's in the dorm parking lot!!!! I had a 88 Escort GT myself.
I love these cars working on a 87 Iroc myself
Solid start. Take care when editing the video that voice and music are about the same level, if voice is too low viewers turn up the volume, then get blasted with music. Also not a priority item, but sun-faded seatbelts are likely to snap in a crash, providing minimal or no protection. They should be replaced when you start taking the car places rather than around the block. Subscribed.
I concur.
Fantastic. Look forward to following.
I always wanted an IROC Camaro!
It blew away tuned port inj IROC's that had all the extra weight.
cant wait to see the update man
In 1988 this was the nicest car on the road. One of the nicest camaros ever made still. Now It needs a fresh paint job with a 427 twin turbo
It was not a GT thumper
According to my research in 1988 they're like a tie .
Is actually says an 88 Mustang.GT is 14.3 in the quarter mile.I don't believe it. Correct me if i'm wrong.it says this car is 15.7
There were plenty of cool gm cars around this time ..87’ cutlass supremes , 88 Monte Carlo Ss’s , 87 grand prix’s 87’ grand nationals..irocs , formulas, trans ams , gm had a lot of nice sports cars..just like in the late 60’s and early 70’s gm had a ton of nice muscle cars..
Cheers!
Sweet ride. Another 3rd gen saved in mass too. I'm on south shore
Can’t wait to see more🎉
It's in decent shape considering you're in Mass. I'm from Mass aswell and the winterscan be ruff on vehicles
Poppy's patina wipe on clear coat to protect what you have there. If you ever feel like repainting it get it done professionally please this thing is so cool and I'm super jealous of this kid!
Just subscribed , fellow massahole here. Keep up the good work . Me and my wife race at New England Dragaway
The fender being out at the door jam is from someone jacking it up wrong. We're the fender bolts on under the rocker is bent
That makes total sense and I hadn’t considered it! Thanks
Nice car 💯💯💯@@ThrowingWrenchesGarage
Congrats on the new car .
The fenders sticking out is from it being jacked up improperly, which bends the pinch welds. If it's not bad you can bend them back down with some pliers, then loosen the bolt on the bottom of the fender and it'll slide back down.
He will remember this car for the rest of his life. If he ever sells it he will regret it
Exactly! I do. 73 Camaro, 350 4 spd😢
Nice job with the video. I had that car too. Check the rear shock towers, they like to crack.
I bought a small ozone generator from Amazon a few years ago - works great on really disgusting interiors.
I'm sure somebody else has told you in the comments, but that fender misalignment on the passenger side is super common. I had an 83 myself, same misalignment. A buddy of mine has a 91, he had to get it fixed.
We’ve had a few comments about that but I appreciate it nonetheless!
How awesome when people ask you in 5 or 10 years what was your first car you can say it was an IROC! Cherish this time bud! Good choice.
Congrats on starting a channel! I Just subscribed! It will take a while to get subs and monetized, it will come, dont worry. Keep making great content and people will watch! As an owner of these cars when they were new, they hit a sweet spot. Keep it up!
Detail king has some odor bombs that help with the odor. I've used them they work well.
I’m here for Camaro content
I love it I have a 91 I've restored with a 650hp stroked small block and another thing I noticed is that's a hardtop car so it's a 5.7 and not the 5.0
If it was a 5.7 the badges would say 5.7.
It's a 5.0
@Carl_Jr yeah i was hoping for you because that year you couldn't get a 5.7 with ttops so I was very hopeful it was a 5.7 but it's OK that 5.0 will be just fine for your boy
@@jonathanlawson4667 My boy? This isn't my channel.
But, you're still right. A 305 is plenty for a young guy in his first car. 👍
@Carl_Jr sorry I thought you were the poster of the video I apologize
Check out Classic Industry here in CALIFORNIA SoCal. They are in Huntington Beach ⛱️
Nice job 👍🏻
Slick top ! Love it
You should get yourself a steam cleaner, that would help a lot for the interior
Stay tuned for episode 2 on Friday! We actually had it on order when we shot this video. Worked great!
@@ThrowingWrenchesGarage will do
Very lucky kid.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice car , I wish I still had my 91 RS
Scented dryer sheets stuck inside the seat itself will help with the smell and deter future infestation. Mice love heater boxes and duct work.
A product I’ve seen in the USA it’s called “shiny car stuff” not sure about it much but apparently it makes bad clear coat look good…🇨🇦
Great video, but please leave the music out next time because it’s great to hear father and son converse whilst bonding with each other🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧🍺🍺
Much less music in other videos. I never cover our dialog with music but the drone of the power washer was much less pleasant ;)
I had mine repainted last year lol I understand about the smell mine smelled like an ashtray!
Great channel
