Thanks for the material that you gave to us sir. At first, I don't even know what is Euphemisms because I just hear it from the semantic material. After hearing your explanation, I know that Euphemisms can change how we use words. From rough to mild, unpleasant to pleasant, and so on. I just realized that Euphemisms have already been in my life since I was born.

One of the strategies to keep smooth interactions through social media is using euphemisms. A number of previous studies have confirmed that the contribution of euphemisms in maintaining interpersonal interactions for “safety” reason is undeniable. As social media allows communication across cultures, social media users also have to consider cultural factors in using euphemisms.

Thank you sir for the explanation. From this video, I can add to my knowledge about euphemism. Euphemisms are polite expressions used for words or phrases that might be considered harsh or unpleasant to hear. Euphemism is very necessary in everyday life in communicating, both directly and through social media. Because if we use language that is not polite or considered taboo in society, it will definitely have a negative meaning for society. Euphemisms are also needed in social media, because if we comment on someone's post and we use words that are taboo or not good, even though we actually mean well, it can be considered a negative comment and cause disputes. Therefore, we must be able to choose good and wise words when communicating so as not to cause misunderstandings in conveying and receiving information.

Thank you for your explanation, sir. This is my first-time hearing about euphemisms and I am interested already. Since human is social creature and we communicate every day, euphemisms will always be used according to our social and cultural context. Even when the technology has developed and we can communicate online without meeting directly, I realize we still use euphemism to maintain our relationship with others. As a teenager who use social media a lot, I find it interesting since I can learn more about linguistics in the media that I am familiar with. In addition, about the case of Lutfi several years ago, I do think that he was wrong when he said ‘Anjay’ is a rough word and it was the same as ‘Anjing’ because I open social media every day and from my view, ‘Anjay’ is milder than the original word. And your explanation clarifies my thoughts. Furthermore, this topic opens my mind again about how language is so related to my everyday life. Then, I am also interested to analyze more about euphemisms even in another culture in order to have good communicative competence.

Thank you for the explanation sir. I got to know that euphemisms, which is the way to make our expression sounds pleasant and polite is cultural or influenced by the culture where they are used. Some expression that is considered neutral in one culture can be considered impolite in another culture. So, there are expression that need to be euphemized in one culture, but may not need to be euphemized in another culture. That way, euphemisms allow us to have a good communication across culture. Furthermore, using euphemisms in communicating also shows our commumicative competence in maintaining relationships with others. I think euphemisms is an interesting topic to be researched more.

I think this topic is really interesting. Euphemism is the substitution of expressions that are considered harsh/offensive. It makes the expression softer or more polite. This is very interesting, especially for people who are reluctant to share their opinion because they thought the language used will be too harsh for someone else. Or to the people who always share hate speech on social media and create disharmony; I think they should learn about euphemisms.
Euphemism can make our expression more modern, pleasant, and polite. It is will show a certain degree of our communicative competence. The communicative function of euphemisms is to show politeness, hid the truth, or even avoid taboos.
And euphemisms are influenced by the culture where they were used. Moreover, someone may not realize they use an offensive expression and thinks his/her language is just fine as usual. But, another person from another culture may find that expression offensive. This can be said, different cultures will have different expressions of euphemism. So, the expression that needs euphemizing in one culture may not need to be euphemized in another culture.
And the idea of studying euphemisms across cultures is really interesting, I wonder if I can analyze and compare a euphemism expression in two different cultures, such as my culture with another culture…

What I get in this video is: Euphemism is the substitution of words that could offend someone in a inoffensive way. I think this is the most sensitive topic to dicuss for some... People. Hahahahha

In certain communication, we can't skip talking about sensitive topics. Therefore, knowledge of euphemisms is needed in order to make the communication run smoothly.
