Hi I’m Ainsley a real estate agent here in Victoria BC. Today’s video is about all about Transportation here in Victoria, they’ll be some things that you’ll appreciate being made aware of, some things that people don’t generally talk about and some things you might be quite surprised by. This video is part of a series I’m creating titled "Everything you need to know before moving to Victoria"
    SERIES PART 1 - TRANSPORTATION
1.We don’t have Lyft or Uber here which makes me a little sad, Vancouver has had both since Jan 2020 but Uber’s request to operate in Victoria was turned down, however there was a news article that came out recently stating that Uber is still waiting for the OK to operate in Victoria … so there may be hope yet. Taxi’s of course are available.
2.WE have lot of deer, almost everywhere….. downtown is probably the only exception. So drivers beware. Always keep in mind if you see 1 expect others nearby.
3.Seeing as we live on an island, ferries are a big part of our transportation system and it’s how most people choose to get over to Vancouver. But these ferries (have been)get cancelled a lot lately, cancellations have largely been due to staffing shortages and stormy weather. To significantly increase your chances for success, in making it to your destination on time, a ferry reservation is HIGHLY recommended especially on holiday weekends, Thursday, Friday afternoons, evenings and Sunday afternoons. if you don’t have a reservation you’ll likely be waiting for a few sailings. Reservations are easy to make on their website at bcferries.com, you have to do it in advance and it costs approx. $20.
4.We have a great bus transit system in the city but no Rapid transit like a subway or skytrain. There about 80 bus routes running through Victoria, Sooke and Sidney and the main routes offer regular service daily from 6am - midnight. Also Our first electric transit bus has now landed in Victoria and will be open to the public early next year.
5.In 2019 Victoria was voted the best bike friendly city in Canada, but be sure to always leave your bike locked in safe space as bike theft is a problem here. Also according to stats Canada in 2021 Victoria topped Canadian cities for people walking and cycling to work, beating out Vancouver and Kelowna who were in 2nd and 3rd place. Due to us having additional cyclists here it’s important to Be aware of cyclists when driving, especially in the rain and Parking and driving with all the bike lanes can be a little extra challenging and take some getting used to.
6.Get the parking app - PARK
7.From Oct 1st - March 31st you must USE winter tires or all season mud and snow tires to drive over the Malahat which is a section of highway 30 minutes north of Victoria and takes you up island. This is important if you plan to take the ferry to Nanaimo, as you will have to come down the Malahat to get to Victoria. There are also other select highways on Vancouver Island that require these tires for certain parts of the year.

Geez Ainsley. So much great content and I hope you are rocking it. We are moving to Saanichton in a few months and have gone back and forth between Vancouver and the Island for years. Love it over there. I hope the growth is smooth....

    Hey Ainsley,
Where would you say is a good location to settle? I have lived in Victoria for a bit now and I am torn between core Victoria and one of the west shore communities? I like the walkability of Victoria proper and I'm sure I'll miss that in one of the west shore communities, but I am also worried about the increasing crime rate in the city. Or should I consider the peninsula? Any advice would be helpful :)

Hey Val, thanks for your comment. There are pluses and minuses to each area for sure. It really boils down to your goals and what your lifestyle is like. Would you be looking to purchase or rent? If you're looking to purchase I'd be happy to hop on a call with you to see how I can help. And if you're looking to rent I'd be happy to put you in touch with a rental relocation specialist who could help you narrow your search! Have a great rest of your weekend.

Do people in Victoria use AC during peak summers and what's like the maximum temperature it gets to in summers?
ps: moving to Victoria for studies in Camosun College in April

Hey thanks for your comment. AC is not super common here. Looks like 37.8 degrees celcius is about the hottest it tends to get here, but that isn't for very many days a year. Will you be looking to find a rental or purchase for somewhere to live?
