1.3 billion views can't be wrong. It was ground breaking in its day. And it is a great song.
It definitely deserves the attention it has received
Vid won an MTV award or two if memory serves?
I hope 2
@@THEJAYYSHOW They won 6 MTV Awards in 1986, for their Song/Video Take on me and 2 for Hunting High and Low. They also had a nomination for the Grammy. Take on me was used as soundtrack for so many movies like Deadpool 2 ( MTV unplugged version of take in me), Bumblebee (2018), A Dog’s Purpose (2017), Ready Player One (2018)... Take On Me is also one of the most covered Songs like Feel This Moment Pitbull ft Christina Aguilera . Here is the link of the Billboard Music Awards 2013 where Morten, the lead singer of a-ha surprises Christina Aguilera and Pitbull while they singing Feel This Moment ruclips.net/video/0rKEvGGUvls/видео.html
And this is the beautiful MTV version which was used in Deadpool 2

Probably one of the most popular MTV music videos of all time.
It’s amazing so I can see why
It won alot of Awards!!
Almost 40 years later, this is still a great video and great song.
You know it's pretty incredible that new listeners like yourself can see the creativity and unique of the video and song even though it's over 35 years old now. At the time there really wasn't anything like it being released on video.
This video is my favorite of all time. Yeah back in the day it was something we had never seen. Another video that blew me away before this was MJ Billie Jean and that was because the director of this video also directed Billie Jean.
Hey! So glad you liked it. Imagine how I and millions of others felt when we saw it in 1985! It was MIND-BLOWING. And to be honest, I've watched this at least 1000 times over the last 36 years. Can't shake it. Never will. It's the best video of all time as far as I'm concerned.
It must have been awesome , wish I was there
You said it better than I ever could
Yeah, still remember the big premiere on "Saturday Night Videos.". What those of us without MTV had to watch. Right up there with "Thriller.". God I miss it.
You've seen them live? I'm so jealous!
Ya the quality is amazing such a good video
Yes. One of the most inventive and fascinating videos of the 80’s.
Every time it came on tv, I was mesmerized. It was impossible not to watch. The music was great, the tiny story was fascinating, and it’s one of those memories of the 80’s I’ll never forget.
3000 drawings and 16 weeks to draw this . This is a great song and video. The singer is amazing with his vocal range and perfect pitch. The whole compilation is a master piece.
Lead singer could actually sing opera, and this video won many awards!!
Woah !
He still has a amazing voice today.
Yep. More than obvious he was trained in opera! It's a pity Opera gets insulted so much, cuz it is a true art! I LOVE Opera! The 3 tenors, LA Diva Callas & my personal fav, Mario Lanza! 🥰
Morten had a really great voice and his range was as you suggested a opera singers match, talented tenors voice.
The lead singer after all these years can still hit that high note
The technology used to make the video : Rotoscope : is actually very old, being invented in 1880. That's not a typo, eighteen eighty. It is made by drawing over the pictures of each frame of the film, and is extremely labor intensive. That part of this video alone took 16 weeks to do.
Welcome to the wonderful 80's music...
The famous synth rift was written by the keyboard player when he was only 15 years old. they have just finished recording their new album. Morten harket , the singer, has one of the best voices in music history. a-ha have a couple of Guinness book records. 198,0000 fans at one show in 91 in Brazil. That show was part of a 25 date tour of South America , the total attendance of those 25 shows was over 3 million people.
Oh wow thank you so much for letting me know
Thanks! Didnt know they were coming out with a new album. I saw them in concert back in the 80s and got their first 3 albums. Need to get more of their musuc. I love Morten's voice!
The singer Morten Harket is still active today at 61 years of age.
@@mariflame1821 a-ha did 11 studio's album, 4 live album and their new album is TrueNorth, a gem for the woeds,music,Voice..a chamber pop💎🎶
first of all thankyou for reacting to AHA i became an AHA fan back in 1985 when this video and song were released. I was 16 years old then and i’m 53 now and still a huge fan. AHA are a trio of very talented men from Oslo, Norway. They are criminally unappreciated and underrated. They have a huge back catalogue of music take on me is just the tiny tip of a very very large musical iceberg. Every AHA song is completely different from the last one. I describe AHA as the viking invasion of 1985 that penetrated my heart and soul and never left. Don’t just take my word for it i suggest you check out more of AHA’s music for yourself and you’ll get what i mean. Take care, from a scottish AHA fan. 😘🏴🇳🇴❤️ #AHA FOREVER🇳🇴❤️
You're blown away, Sis, like I was in the mid 80s. Thank you for carrying the good stuff forward.
1985 was right during the steep rise of video production. Tina Turner -We Don't Need Another Hero, Prince -Raspberry Beret, Aretha Franklin -Freeway Of Love, Dire Straits -Money For Nothing. All of these videos were awesome, and released in 1985.
Oh wow really?
Absolutely!!!!!🔥🔥🔥
But the song itself is from 1984.
Oh boy!🙄😳
definitely! it was a different time where the videos were as important as the songs , nothing compares anymore
THE ICICLE WORKS "BIRDS FLY" (WHISPER TO A SCREAM)
Yeah my mind was blown too when I heard this as a 23-year-old. Still great to this day and everyone agrees this is the best animated video ever
Everything real was videotaped. Everything drawn was also first videotaped. It took them 16 WEEKS of working 10-12 hours a day to "rotoscope" reality into drawings. The imagination to conceive of this plot and create a visual representation back in 1985 must have been truly groundbreaking.
I was 9 years old when this came out, and I remember this video and being fascinated by the graphics. This and Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" were so advanced visually. That was back when MTV actually showed music videos. It's a shame that visual creativity has been replaced by crappy reality shows.
You were watching Slegdehammer when you were 9? Have you taken a good listen to it lately? That song is dirty.
@@joejacobsen6822 Well, I didn't know that back then! Lol!
@@as7326 I watched it as well. I was about 5 or 6.
@@joejacobsen6822 Shame on you! 😁
Ahhhhh how I love this oldie 80s iconic song and video. Thanks Jayy
No thank you for watching ❤️
I had teenagers in the 80s and watched a lot of MTV. I've always thought this was an amazing concept for a music video - and I love the song too.
Many of their songs were before their time. Simply the best.
Yes! ICONIC 80’s right here! Song and video- we couldn’t wait to see it come on Friday Night Videos and/or Night Trax back in the day- among other greats others have listed- No internet, none of that- you either caught it on TV or not at all- made it even more special and appreciated- ❤️👍
Left high school in 1989, Ah ha is one of the sounds of the time. Waaaay ahead of its time. Amazing and glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
That video was way ahead of its time. I believe it won several awards. It had heavy play on MTV back when they actually played music videos.
The use of Rotoscope has been around since at least the 60's, I think. It takes film of someone and makes that film look animated, turning them into a cartoon. The video is one of the most innovative of all time.
And, yes Jayy, you HAVE heard it in commercials. Many have used this song over the years.
Might not be 100% but to this day I believe this is the best video of all time since MTV.
This was out in my HS years. I used to think it was corny, but the older I get, the more im a sucker for a good love story. Kinda hits me how he didnt let nothing stop him from getting back to his Love. My sister in law told me means I finally grew up. 😂😂 God bless ya, girl!
This video won a lot of awards when it came out. Still one of my favs. Great reaction!! 🙂
For the 80's, this was a very revolutionair video!
Love the 80's!
Thx for reacting! 🎶🎤💜
I saw it for the first time aprox 1990 on mtv with my two teenagers. We were blown away. The drawing got me and of course the song.
Music videos reached their pinnacle with this one. Nothing since has topped it.
Hmm I’ll hold you to that statement but this video is genius
The video was awesome, and back in the day, it was really something to see. Our jaws dropped to the floor watching this lol.
Still after more than 30 years, still the best music video ever made. Ahead of it's time technologically. Tells a great story. Still the GOAT.
If you didn’t know how they did this remember very little computers were used to make movies and videos: the model (actress) the members of AHA had to act out the scenes while a photographer or videographer filmed the scenes. Then every frame or picture was printed individually. Then they had to take tracing paper. Put it on the photo and trace that part of the clip. Then they would put them together like a cartoonist would after drawing one frame at a time and the real scenes were spliced into and even cut into what was drawn. Disney had really hard jobs years ago doing color cartoons. But yeah tracing paper.
Kudos to you for appreciating the video. The song would’ve been a big hit regardless, but the video certainly took it to the next level. It took two people three months on full-time and beyond to create this marvel of artistry.
I remember this video winning a lot of awards on MTV when it came out, it blew everybody away back then. Great band, great videos.
This was one of the first videos I saw on MTV and it’s still my favorite to this day I’m now 71 yrs old.
Iconic video from the 80’s. ❤️
A music video from the golden age of MTV, when it was vibrant, and still culturally relevant.
I was 25 then!! Loved the song, especially the amazing video at the time, just WILD!! Such a happy ending too!!💝
One of my top 5 bands ever.
IMHO the greatest music video ever made.
This was always on my short list of videos I would actually stay up all night watching MTV just to be able to see this video more than once.
There’s an “acoustic” unplugged version of this song by them, it takes a completely different feel
Morten makes me want to cry in the Unplugged version.
Yeah this song unplugged grabs your heart. I can just get lost in it. Morten and that voice. So good.
A great sweet version ❤
Hi Jay yes I remember this coming out! The year our daughter was born! And this was and still is A top video ! Keep up the good work!❤️👍
Thank you so much ❤️
This video is outstanding. The music is amazing. The love story is incredible.
I wasn't quite a teenager when this came out but it is by far the best music video ever and still an amazing song to listen to! I am so glad I found your channel and that you are reacting to these classics.
The video complements the song and vice versa. Can't imagine how the video would be done any other way.
REAL LIFE "SEND ME AN ANGEL" (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
This was an award winning video. The play between animation and real life, is mind blowing! This song has been used in at least 2 commercials, one just released for Christmas.
At the time (in 1985) the racing scenes reminded me of racing images from the 30's and 40's.
This song is so catchy and enjoyable that it's going to be one of those timeless classics. But that's rarer with music videos, and this is one that is always going to have that designation too.
I was 14 and a fan ofcourse, but yeah that song and that video IS iconic. Wonderful to see ppl react to it,seen a lot of it and everyone is as amazed as you. Hugs from Sweden.
Please be aware, this video was done before computer graphics! This is all hand-drown animation and video overlayed.
Their chemistry was so good in this video it carried on into their personal life and they actually dated for a while .
Great video that dominated MTV
Really? That’s so awesome!
Best thing about stylized hand animation is that even though it takes a ton of work, it's truly timeless.
You got to love the magic of rotoscope!
Invented by the Fleischer brothers in the 30s, it STILL wows audiences today.
One of the best music videos ever. Saw A-ha in concert way back in the 80s. Morten has one of the best male singing voices I've ever heard. Watch "The Sun always shines on TV" for the end of this music video and even better singing from Morten. Love A-ha!
And the crazy thing is Morten Harket, at the age of 62, still looks the same age now ( 2021 )as he did when this video was made some 35+ years ago!
@@ashleyfletcher5044 Bloody annoying the rest of us can age horribly and he still looks 25!
Thank you for your lovely reaction. The sketches were all hand drawn, possibly the best video of all time and lovely Morten Haarket's 5 octave chorus brings it all together.
This was considered the greatest music video ever made for decades and it still makes the list of greatest.
To be fair, Thriller was considered the greatest music video ever made for decades. But this vid was absolutely huge of course, and I prefer it. ☮
One of the coolest music videos of all time!
I remember watching this music video on MTV all of the time when I was growing up in the 80’s. Great selection! Thanks for another excellent video! Love your channel!
You Are Absolutely Right My Music Lovin Sister,, It Was Groundbreaking At The Time,, Was A HUGE Hit As Well As Winning Many Awards.
Jayy, one of the most revolutionary, unbelievable and coolest music videos of all time. It changed the way we see videos. The song, of course, is not iconic, but the video will go down as one of the greatest ever conceived and produced!
The song is one of best 80s song.
The song is the definition of iconic and was one of the defining songs of the 80s. It was a smash hit all over the world!
I remember seeing this before the movie pale rider and became one of the biggest songs
I wish you could’ve see it on MTV in 88’/89’ when i did! ! was like 5 or 6 and remember it very well!
I bought comic books after this video!
I remember watching the video for the first time in the 80's, thinking we were at the summit of our technological advances because of this video lol. Like, this was it.
“The Sun Always Shines on TV” by A-Ha is probably their finest song.
Is it really?
Also love Hunting High and low :)
in the beginning of the video for The Sun Always Shines they tell the end of this story.
Oh yes. I love that song.
"The Sun Always Shines on TV" is gr8, but "Take on Me" is Awesome!! It is a classic.. epic.. And A-Ha was ahead of their time with the graphics for Take on Me in the 80's. This was my favorite song for that period.
This video is timeless
Takes me back! Junior year of high school - MTV in it's heyday. Good times. :)
And at 61 years old, Morten can still sing and hold those notes..his voice is still amazing. He was recently on The Masked Singer in possibly the UK version(?). I'm sure someone knows if it was Norway's masked Singer or where..But they are still unbelievable.
It was the UK version.
"Stay On These Roads" was a bigger hit world-wide I believe.
It’s a great song but yeah, the video caught everyone off guard when it came out! Great reaction as always! ❤️
Thank you for the reaction and sharing your thoughts.
Since you're also a Billy Idol fan, you might enjoy the video to "Forgot to be a Lover", because one of the background singers is played by the same actress from the "Take on Me" video.
Also if you're ever interested in watching more 80s videos with FX and which tell a story (as this one did), might I recommend "Cloud Busting" by Kate Bush.
I never really liked this song, but it really is the voice of the 80's, my childhood, for me.
Still one of the coolest videos ever. I was in my second year of college so music was my life. This video blew our tiny little minds!
Cool song. This year the singer Morten Harket played the "Viking" in the UK TV show "The Masked Singer"
Still one of the all time best videos ever made. Never ever get tired of seeing this one. So glad u liked it too
Snoopy sweater is cool. One of my fave characters.
This song came in 1984, only the video a year later.
Quite possibly one of the best song/video combinations ever!💕
No need to worry. Your reaction is great. It is an amazing song and the video is just as amazing. Love you honest reactions. Keep doing your thing.
This video blew our minds as 80s teenagers xx
ese video es un clasico y una joya de los 80
Part 1 of a 3 part set on this album:
What's up next..."The Sun Always Shines on T.V."....exsquite to say the least. This band and the lead singer are worthy of a DEEP DIVE.👍
Also watch the documentary on what painstaking steps it took to make that stop motion video❤
Thanks for appreciating all this. God bless and Merry Christmas 🤗
One of the earliest music videos
Still in the top 10 music videos of all time
While i will always love this song, especially because it was the "first", my favorites will always be a tie between Stay On These Roads and Hunting High And Low. A-ha where huge and had dozens of hits in Europe, it's a shame all most Americans know is Take On Me.
Some other suggestions: The Sun Always Shines On TV, The Blood That Moves The Body, Hunting High And Low, I've Been Losing You, Cry Wolf, Manhattan Skyline, The Living Daylights, Stay On These Roads, Touchy!
Also Summer moved on ( also live at Vallhall or for Ending on a high note) ; Analogue; Butterfly Butterfly, Cosy Prisons,Minor Earth Major Sky, Forever not yours,Foot of the Mountain, Cast in steel,Shadowside...and also True North, As if,Between the Halo and the Horn ,...I love " I'm in"
@@Elena-in6uw Oh yeah, totally!!
I was only referring to the 80's biggest hits on that comment.
My favorite non-80's A-ha song is still Dark Is The Night., love that song, and favorite non-80's album Memorial Beach
@@conan5885 great song and album👏🏻👏🏻
Not only a great song but the video was ground breaking at the time thanks for the reaction
Yeah, things were happening in the 80's. And this video was a slap in the face of everything else. "You can do that??". Yes, and quite a few followed.
I hope that you got the story of the music video. The lady cafe owner thought that the girl stiffed her coffee check and crumpled up the comic book and threw it into the trash can. Then the two men that lost the motorcycle race at the beginning of the music video met up with the lead singer who won the race and the girl because their worlds collided. When the two men cornered them, the lead singer opened a portal back to the real world and helped the girl escape. But the lead singer got struck by one of the men with the wrench. But after the girl got home with the comic book, she looked at the comic book to see what happened to the lead singer. It turned out he was trying to come into her world by slamming himself against the walls of her hallway until he made it through. And then it was happily ever after. The end.
Man, I grew up on this tune! Strangely, the first time I heard The Weeknd, I thought it was new stuff from A-Ha.
The end of the video where he slams against the walls is right out of the movie ALTERED STATES, which I highly recommend.
Music an Vids from that time was very creative I miss those days lol Great Reaction Jayy😘
One of the best one hit wonder- and maybe the best video ever !!!!!!!!!!!!! 'Come on Eileen' next please
@@ashleyfletcher5044 I didn't know that
Prior to 1982 there was no such thing as a music video, groups had no reason to make them, only a tiny handful of the biggest rock bands created videos for songs and that was just so they could project them on to a screen when playing live. As more and more bands started to do it a new cable channel appeared in 1985 called MTV. This music video - which is regarded as one of the best of all time - came out in the same year that MTV launched!
This is a very great song and video
