Can we appreciate that this was way before autotune so he's really hitting that note and had to hit it multiple times every time he sang it.
@@aoleon3908 he has my respect
and till today!
The thing is, the artists back then didn’t need a million tries. They actually could sing.
@@Skelldr that's true. Autotune should go away if you ask me.
Not at all trying to take away from Morten Harkets vocal abilities, but if you think vocalist from the era of music didn’t have effects and pitch corrections on their vocal tracks... you are mistaken lol
I feel bad for the younger generations. Growing up in the 80's was the best time to be alive.
[comment not found]
You shouldn't. They like what they like. Just as you like what you like. I know because I come from a generation very likely before even yours. And 20 years from now, everyone will say that everything from 2020 was the best music and everything today was crap. And guess what? 20 years after that, those people from the future will be doing exactly the same thing. Nostalgia is always greener on the past side of the fence, but this is only bias, nothing rooted in any fact.
@@minenetchamipon1427 Considering George Floyd and the fact that people still need to learn that Black Lives Matter, that is objectively false.
@@minenetchamipon1427 Congratulations on the most idiotically inappropriate virtue-signaling comment of the 21st century. Its being tagged and put in the time capsule. No worries. It'll still be there in 80 years.
@@holdensagan if RUclips still exist by then
This music video won awards back in the day. No one had seen anything like it. It was totally awesome! It was one of the best videos of the 80's. I really miss the 80's...
The 80's were a blast,I miss the 80's big time
Me too 😕
I'd even argue that it still holds up very well. Sure, some aspects look dated, but on the whole it looks pretty good and is still a better video than many made today.
thats a lie.
The movie "Fire and Ice," (1983), by the late, great artist Frank Frazetta, also used rotoscoping. I guess the difference with "Take On Me," is that it transitions from animation to reality continually through the video.
"That dude is hella sweaty."
Well you would be too if you were trying to breaking into another dimension. Lol
I always thought the ending of this video was a sexual metaphor. She breathing really hard while he's banging away at the walls and he winds up all sweaty. Also, there's a movie called Altered States that has a similar scene in it, I think this video's ending was inspired by that.
Saves me commenting the same time. A person will get sweaty thrusting through Realities.
Ya know what Alex. Doing like an all things 80's would be a blast.
... to the past 🤣🤣 *badumtiss*
Was gonna say, he deffo needs to do a reaction to classic 80s tunes! Would be absolute gold!
Poison- skinny bop( first
@@coopsnz1 that's Unskinny
Yes!!!!!
I feel like you aren't appreciating the sheer artistry in this video. The drawings are all done by hand, one cell at a time. It's amazing.
The animation was actually hand drawn one cell frame at a time copying over the actual video.
D Ole yep. This video is a master class in rotoscoping.
The movie "Fire and Ice," by the late, great artist Frank Frazetta, was also done using rotoscoping.
People have said rotoscoping is cheating, not me I think it is fantastically cool. Bacshi did it in the LOTR animated movie.
I wanna say I heard that this was the first music video to use rotoscoping - and hence multiple bands have since followed etc. But I can't find my source for it.
@@CrushingMissy There was also extensive rotoscoping in Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" - but I'm not sure which video came first.
Most underrated band of the 80s
no headbanging, just headwagging.
Pure pop quality
Underrated? Thought they were the biggest band in the world at that time
@@JohnDoe-zk4rm - most Americans still believe they are one hit wonders. They have no idea what they have lost on the way.
Metalhead or not, this is a song that everyone knows from somewhere and then truly discovers the amazing video.
@METAL4 LIFE indeed
Actually I started to listen to Metal, because pop music started to sound crappy in the 90ies, compared to masterpieces like this.
Truth
But then how many dig deeper and find the hilarious literal version?
Kirk and Rob played this in Norway.
Are there actually people who don’t know this song? That’s wild
Makes me feel so old that he has no knowledge of this legendary video.
Me too! Ugh!!!
Me three
Same. I remember being slightly scared of the end of the video when it was released and I was a kid.
Allegedly....
Yep. I remember when it was new.
Best pop song ever written. Period. No room for debate.
"This song sounds nostalgic"
Maybe your mom used to listen to this song a lot when you were a kid
The song was first released in 1984 and this version is one from a couple of years later when it did take off on a global scale for them after signing to Warner Music
His mom was probably a teenager when this was released.
Islendingar the second one with 1,000,000,000 views is the one from 1985
Morten Harket is one of the greatest singers of all time! It's such a shame that it's only "take on me" that charted in the US. You should definitly check out some more a-ha or his solo project
"The sun always shines on tv" and "hunting high and low" are my favourites of a-ha and "the spanish step" from solo project
Joakim Thorkildesn hunting high and low is glorious!
Hunting high and low is a masterpiece
@Harry Dawson yeah
i feel like ‘the sun always shines on tv’ was their follow-up in the us, but it barely did ‘ok’ and then they were forgotten. if you somehow score a huge hit in the us, be creative on the follow up, but don’t do the same thing! (Robert Palmer being the exception to the rule). There are so many masterpiece one hit wonders.
@@RLucas3000 - It has nothing to do with their capabilities. They were not willing to use as much time in the US as needed to come back with more top hits. Their families were in Norway, so they chose Europe - which I am very grateful for. Who knows what the American pop industry would have done to them. They went on creating wonderful music, which anyone in the world can enjoy today if they are interested in what other parts of the world can offer.
Not even 30 seconds in and I already liked the vid
wow...ur just nuts
What a mad lad
I need to confess: i'm a diehard rock'n'roll/heavy metal fan, but i love A-HA! Forever on my playlist!
For me this song represents the 80's music more than any other song of this decade!! Fur shure!!
Anytime I think of the 80s, I can't not think of Beldar in Coneheads singing Tainted Love by Soft Cell
80's music and culture.. simultaneous cringe and warm nostalgia for me.
This was a song my mom warned me about when I was a kid when u would go outside”don’t go to far, stay with ur brothers and sisters and for god sake don’t go with strange men who want you to go into comic books” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 my childhood 🤣🤣🤣
Love me some a-ha! Should do some tears for fears, flock of seagulls!

'Head over Heels' by Tears for Fears would be awesome.

This song has a special place for me. It was the first song on the radio when I got my own room for the first time. I was in 5th grade. This will forever hold a spot in my top 5 songs of my youth.
That high note when he says 'in a day or two', that was before auto tune existed, and 35+ years later that man still hits that not every day.
I have so many questions like who requests this song assuming he hasn’t heard it and 2 who hasn’t heard this song?
that song is nearly 40 years old. It's rarely run on radio, unless their focus is on the 80s. Those born after '95 might have never heard the song, if they were not exposed by their parents or gradnparents. As this song was a one-hit-wonder in the US, there are a lot of young people, who never had the chance to hear it.

One of the most legendary music videos ever. A-Ha also performed the theme to the James Bond movie, "The Living Daylights."
You should check out their song 'The Sun Always Shines On TV' - or their MTV acoustic version of this one, where it slows it all RIGHT down, it's beautiful
This such a good nostalgia song, make's me nostalgic for a decade I was not even born in. Same for Pearl Jam's EVEN FLOW.
Get the same feeling from Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermints"
Love this song! Very nostalgic for me as I was a kid back then. I didn’t see the music video until a decade later and I already loved the song; so you’re spot on saying the music video isn’t what makes the song. It’s a very rare case where a music video creates hype for the song.
This took me right back to 13 year old me and my bedroom full of A-ha posters 🥰
"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls followed by the cover by DIAMANTE and Breaking Benjamin!
They actually got an award for that video! !!
Hay canciónes que jamás se perderán en el recuerdo y esta es una de ellas, MARAVILLOSA!!!!!
that video won a ton of awards in the day, for being ground breaking , It was truly far ahead of it's time . state of the art production for it's day. And entirely analog. Not a digital or CG segment in the entire thing.

Hi Alex,
You made my day with this one. I remember being a kid watching the video on MTV. Haven't seen it or heard the song in a long time. I agree with you the song doesn't need the video. Both together is perfect though.
They made another video for this song first and it was very stale… just them playing the song on a stage
I am a Metalhead, but LOVE 70s and 80s music
Most metalheads have a secret crush on a-ha ;-)
I can’t believe you glossed over the line, “It’s no better to be safe than sorry.” Great line. Great song. Always has been. But I do agree with the band that the video did play a part, especially in the song’s early success.
It is a whole package. Without the huge hit potential the record company would never have put all the effort (money) into making the video. I guess it is hard for younger generations to understand how strange this new sound was back then. That's what A-ha themselves ment about the claim that the song needed time to grow on you. It still is that way with A-ha's music - many of their songs needs you to listen more than once. Like this first song which needed to grow on the whole world - today their songs have to grow on each and one of us and eventually ends up becoming the music we love the most.
This video was so advanced for it's time, that's what makes it a priceless video.
Like you, Alex, I was born in '93. I didn't get to experience the 80's in their full glory, HOWEVER, my mom recorded videos on MTV, we grew up watching videos on TV (back when they still showed music videos on TV), and always listened to this stuff. This is a classic one hit wonder. A few bands have covered this ditty (Weezer most recently) but no one holds a candle to A-ha. These guys absolutely kill this track.
I love watching you do these classic reax, and hope this trend continues. The 70's/80's had some killer tunes and even better videos.
Now you HAVE TO watch the follow up "The Sun allways shines on TV"!

I like how he says that this is how real music sounds… because back in the day when this music was popular it wasn't considered by a lot of people real music because of the electronic instruments.

Dead By April - Losing You
I always found it curious how people in North America or Europe recognize A-ha only due to "Take on Me" and maybe "The Sun Always Shines on TV" ... while here in Brazil they were/are massively popular, they had TONS of hits here, you can even check for yourself their other videos on youtube, like "Stay on These Roads", "Touchy", "Manhattan Skyline", "You Are The One", "Hunting High and Low" ... more than 50% of the comments there are in portuguese. I was alive when this first came out. There is some amazing fact about this music video. What's amazing is that this was shot on film, then frame by frame it was projected on the wall inside of a large building. An artist later drew out each scene onto paper. TIME TAKING! Wikipedia it!

This is why the video has had nearly 2 Billion views. Lovely Morten Harket and his 4 octave chorus plus the best video of All Time.
This video in 1985 was considered groundbreaking and it pushed the boundaries of the possibilities that can be achieved when viewing music videos as a legitimate artform. It won numerous awards and at the time it was the most expensive video ever made. It brought the art technique of "Rotoscoping" to the forefront of mainstream and today, it is considered by many as the greatest music video ever created in terms of production and popularity. 35 years later and people are STILL talking about this video.
