As a hobby photographer in Iceland i admire you for having your first workshop here in Iceland, just because of the weather, when making a workshop you have to make a lot of plans into the future and hoping the weather would be good, and i can see you didn't get the best of weathers but based on the photos i think you did a great job, Absolutely Stunning.

Best video yet, thank you for sharing your innermost thoughts with us. We are all human, with human fears and anxieties that no one else can see, but we all feel. Off on our winter roadtrip to New Zealand tomorrow, time to expand MY comfort zone, thanks Thomas.

Amazing video Tom! I'm surprised you feel that bad about "bad weather" even though I've seen all your videos, but it's so cool to see you developing/broadening your "feelings" towards what is good weather. To me the worst weather is either clear skies or when there's lots of clouds but still a few holes of blue sky. Either I prefer small puffy clouds or a massive amount of clouds :)

I passed my driving test this week at 29, something I've been putting off for years. Your videos were what inspired me to finally do it. I got a camera in January and have been doing as much as possible with it but seeing your videos gave me the push and the drive (No pun intended) to get my licence to give me the freedom to get out and explore this awesome country that we're fortunate enough live in. Thanks.

Sven, be sure and post it even if it's uncomfortable. I hate getting ready for a trip. I blame the packing and prep, but it's the anxiety that it won't be worth it. Sometimes I think, maybe I'll just kick back and relax at home(for the three day weekend). I always override that nonsense and push on through the prep(I really do hate packing up the gear and food. I hate figuring out a menu). Five miles down the hiway it hits me; I'm ON MY WAY. Pure joy. It's always worth the effort.

It's soothing to hear that I'm not the only landscape photographer who's haunted by bad weather ;-) But I get lucky from time to time. It's also the reason why the only workshop I currently host is about shooting rivers and waterfalls in an area where you can shoot both with sun and in pouring rain... most times it's pouring rain though. But doing a longer workshop I'd have the same fears that you have - what if the weather really sucks. I think you handled it nicely from what I saw in the videos and the participants got some nice photos, I'm sure.

    Hi Thomas
I have been a long time subscriber and I am a huge fan of your work you are a huge inspiration to me. Your channel has made me so inspired I am planning to start a youtube channel. However, I did have one in the past and with me still being in the later years of school I was mocked and teased for my channel therefore, making me not want to do my channel and in the end made me delete all my videos. I am really passionate about trying this again have you got any advice to overcome these people.
    Thanks Jason.

Hi Thomas, thanks for this video. Your points on personal growth and comfort zones really resonated. Taking a lot from your genuine and honest approach to giving advice and talking through your work flow and thought processes. It would be interesting to know how far ahead you plan and how strictly you stick to the path - or if you're simply doing your best at this particular point in time and staying pragmatic to change. Keep up the great work! From an avid photographer, wannabe film maker. If you ever need backing tracks to videos or plan on making films, just let us know! Cheers, Rich, Oldernar.

  • @OnPatrolPhotography

Ha, I know what you mean about bad weather and losing motivation when shooting alone! I almost let bad weather forecasts for a week in advance put me off shoots. But on the occasion that I head out into the not-so-great conditions are usually when I come back with some stunning images. It's exactly like you say, it makes you think on a differing tangent, instead of getting the image you had in mind, you need to look for alternative compositions you wouldn't have looked for otherwise 👍
And as for filming in front of people, I still can't 😂😂😂 One day I will, but for now, a quick check of my environment before firing up the video 😄
Cheers again for another fantastic video.
    All the way from Australia,
    Simon

Such a key point; that pushing yourself out of your comfort zone results in better pictures. And it has inspired me to do something about my own inaction/lethargy which although the excuse is a good one (The job and the accompanying stress) is holding me back from making better images.

Greetings from the future! Two things... first... I used to teach two nightschool courses in photography, back in Canada. I was SO worried that... I SIMPLY OVER-PREPARED! 😁 I'll BET that you did that as well and that you did well because of that. Secondly... I've never had "weather-sealed" lenses. My cameras are weather-sealed and my lenses are pretty high quality... but older, non-weather-sealed lenses. As a result I've completely avoided rainy conditions. Welp... because of your inspiration, I've ordered a lens & camera rain-jacket! I'm excited!!!

Hi Thomas, love your images and been watching your vids for a while. I have a question for you. When and how do you decide to convert to B&W? You mentioned lovely colours in the composition with the rivers, but then converted to B&W. It was a lovely image, but what made you take this decision? Is it random, trial and error, premeditated etc?
Also, thank you for the inspiring video's. You have helped me start picking up my camera again after too long a break... maybe a channel should be next!

Oh noes! "Stoonin" is misspelled on the t-shirt! :D
Just to pick up on something that you mentioned, because almost everybody is more or less anxious about this (not related to photography) - not knowing all the answers to every single question. So bloody what?! An honest "I can't answer that." only makes you human. The only thing is that you shouldn't go absolutely blank unless it really goes outside of your area of expertise (but then that is already a valid answer). The job is already half done if you can at least offer some pointer in the right direction or an educated guess/speculation. But I can't imagine you going absolutely blank on a photography-related question. Also, remember that nobody can really blame you for not knowing something unless they know it themselves ... which is also unlikely to happen with people paying for your workshop.
So don't worry if your workshops are anywhere near as good as your videos! If just had more time for photography right now... Also, seeing your usual videos, I have to spend more time in the UK!

Hi Thomas, I'm enjoying the videos as always; I enjoy your honest and straightforward approach to speaking to camera and the video explanations with the final image shown.
Personally, as I don't like wet, cold and damp weather (I'm from Manchester originally!), so I prefer warm or very warm places, and I'm not even too bothered by humid climates, but drier is better. What I mean to say is, have you considered holding a workshop in SE Asia? There are some wonderful places in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Thailand (Tony&Chelsea Northrup held a workshop in Thailand earlier this year). The bonuses are that flights are relatively cheap, accommodation and food is very cheap and the local people are very friendly and accommodating, in general in all of those countries. This is not to mention some of the mountainous areas and river deltas. Temples and city/town scapes have been photographed by millions of people, but perhaps not so much the mountainous areas. I love the lush green scenary and paddy fields for example. There are tons of waterfalls and the rainy season can be spectacular if one is high up in the hills or mountains to watch it coming in.
If you want to investigate this in more seriousness, feel free to contact me... I've just returned from over 3 weeks in Thailand (my 6th time) and 11 days in Vietnam. Lovely holiday and my legs were nearly worn out!

Once more, Thomas, an excellent video. If you have a minute I have a question: when taking panoramas, I always shoot vertically and generally use at least a 50mm lens because I don't want to lose the scale of the distant mountains. Sometime I use a 135mm+/- to increase the height of the background. What do you recommend ?

Thanks so much for your inspiring peptalk exactly one week before I'll be travelling alone again to Beara peninsula in Ireland since I became partly handicapped. I therefore won't be able to do long hikes or so, but I can manage for about 1km at a time (I think) Maybe, just maybe I can stretch that if the landscape draws me. But which ever way, there will be enough beauty surrounding me, without having to walk far. You are a born teacher Thomas, thank you! I wish I would've been able to go on your workshops! But youtube will have to do.

Great content Thomas, following along with your videos from Canada. Two questions. You are totally right about the polariser just not working well on those rivers. However when you dialed it in so the reflection disappears, the mountains in the background seemed to have a little more pop. Could possibly blending both exposures create a better final result? Also, I just picked up my first filter kit after using circular screw on filters. You quickly realise the limitations of those. What I never used was grads, as they are not really an option on the screw in filters. Now that I can use them, do you really think they are needed? I can't replicate ND or circpol in post, but a graduated filter is simple to add in LR/PS. Do you think having that extra filter is useful? I never have a flat horizon, so I'll likely be darkening mountains, rocks or trees that rise above the grad line. So post work seems to be necessary regardless.

Watching this was SO funny. I really like the shirt, it is totally you and absolutely nails it.
    But thats not the point.
Point is that when I watched the video I thought about how to help a little bit. I mean I wait for the next video, I am happy if a new video comes up on youtube and I have learned a lot watching them. So why not contribute ? Why not giving some money?
So for me it is a no-brainer to order the Calendar. I get 12, ok, 13 'absolutely stunnin' Heaton images, pay less then 30 Euros and may be it helps a little to pay the rent.
And now I sit back and wait for the postman an the next video. :)

Hi Thomas, off the subject a little. I think you own this tripod head. Manfrotto XPRO Ball Head top lock. I have heard, when you attach the shoe lock to your camera. As no rubber seals on the shoe, that attaches to the camera. The camera slips around a little, and is not secure. Have you found this? Look forward to your new video..

Hi Thomas, I am by far and large no superhero but I have solo cycled all possible roads in Iceland in three different trips with all my camping/cooking/photography gear on my bicycle and I know very well that feeling of being badly beaten by the weather (even more so as a cyclist with no protection) when you were so full of high expectations for that specific spot (Landmannalaugar area, for instance). Those moments, as you say very well, are the ones that push us one step further into searching what photography is truly about, an intricate system of connections between you and mother Nature out of the comfort zone which have got nothing to do with image marketing and profit. BTW, kudos to you for your ways of telling things straight from the guts!

Really nice job Thomas, a nice change up content wise. You just need to be yourself, share your philosophy as you do in your videos on photography and embracing the outdoors. I visited Icleand 4 years ago in March and had wall to wall blue skys and sunshine, wished I had some detail in the sky though.

going on my first solo trip abroad soon, a trip to Italy purely for landscape/cityscape photography and its out my comfort zone, couldn't agree more Thomas you've just got a suck up and do it, don't think i am quite there with vlogging but i have certainly considered it a few times.

I disassembled an LCD display last week in order to get the polariter sheets for my camera. (I am not going to spend that much money right now. Camera + lenses cost enough for the moment...) Any ideas how I can mount that piece of plastic in front of my lenses? Maybe replace the glass in an UV Filter with the plastic sheets?

Great message Thomas. It's comforting to see that landscape-photography-guru's like yourself struggle with the same things as I do. Thanks for sharing!

You have honestly become an inspiration to me, Thomas. I have always liked photography. Always. I used to mess around and take wildlife photos, portraits and stuff. Only very recently have i started to take it a bit more seriously. I stumbled onto your videos not long ago. After having found your videos, though, I have been inspired to try harder. To get out more. In fact, I went out yesterday to a state park to film and photograph.
I am hoping that I got enough usable footage to piece together my first youtube video.
I honestly have you to thank for lighting this fire under me.

Tom, I'm a regular follower and I've noticed that when you do a pano you spend a lot of time leveling the tripod but I never see you null out the parallax point of the lens. I've tried pano's both ways (with & without nulling) and to my eye nulling the parallax provides a pictures that flows better to the eye. Your thoughts...

Thomas, I've been on four workshops in the U.S. I never expect perfect weather and do not hold the workshop leader responsible. It helps to have back-up plans for the weather, some Lightroom or Photoshop presentations or indoor photography opportunities. Also, student image reviews is helpful (nice to see what others do and to get feedback on my images or areas of concern). I like that you got the group out to shoot even though the weather was not ideal. Keep up the enthusiasm and just enjoy what nature gives you!!

Bad weather pictures are some of the BEST pictures. I love the dark, saturated images. Go out and make more. It pulls the creativity out in a big way.

In fact you can also use a polarizer to get *more* glare. Aligned for maximum glare they will let aligned polarized light pass while reducing non-polarized light by 1 stop. So in effect you can boost the glare by 1 stop.

Cracking episode! that panorama shot is absolute class, the shot explaining the non use of a polariser was spectacular. Thanks for chatting to us about comfort zones and trying uncomfortable things, and well done for your first workshop seems like the weather assisted in some unique images!
Time for me to try more and more uncomfortable things I think.

Hey Thomas yet another great video. As for fear and anxiety I get you totally, sometimes I even have issues with showing images to friend and family because I am so scared that they will laugh or make rude comments and just not like them, it got so bad recently that I've found so many excuses to just not go out with my camera, you know the usual stuff the weather is crap it's the wrong time of day or there is something else I need to do the list goes on. So in retrospect it's great to hear that world class photographer such as yourself and others have these fears etc and gives me the inspiration to go out and sometimes just do it, and who knows maybe one day I'll start a channel of my own, there don't appear to be that many if any from New Zealand, so I might just have a captive audience LOL!! Also just incase you're interested I'm 53 and still have all these fears and anxiety, so it's not an age thing it happens to all ages.

Thanks for your waffling - actually I think its pretty good as it shows that you are not a "professional videoographer" but I mean that as a compliment! It shows (at least me) that you are not scripting your message and you come across as a real human being *thumbs up* :) I also really appreciate that you expose your fears and limitations, it gives me hope and confidence that perhaps one day I could do the same :)

Hi Thomas, have just (last couple of days) found your site as I was looking at drones. Love the videos and the way you tell it as it is, no script, warts and all, but very professionally done. I am learning a lot and am inspired to get out more!

I stopped using a polariser over 40 years ago. They kill the vibe of any picture. Instead, I use really deep lens hoods, especially on overcast days when glare can be a real problem. When out in the cold and the rain, my best friends are bin bags, elastic bands and a flask of hot water.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you selling some of your work or you advertising upcoming work shops. It seems like it cost you a lot to make your videos, so If I was you, I wouldn't hesitate to throw in sales pitch every now and then. I would love to buy some of your images. Not all of us have the enthusiasm that you put into your work.... So sell away. Some of us would love to purchase some of your work.

I have a question for you regarding sky's.
If you ever take a brilliant landscape shot but the sky isn't quite right (a rarely seen mistake) I know
Would you replace the bad sky for a better one in photoshop or go back at a later date and shoot the same shot again with a better sky?

Great timing on this video, I just shot my first wedding, not by choice but it was family and you know why they "had to" have me do it. Nervous up until it was time to shoot, then it all just flowed. Still not interested in doing another, too many people and to much noise.
