Nice. I would like to suggest that using a string that holds knots well but isn’t too stretchy (maybe jute twine) paired with good adjustable knots (maybe a 2 loop prussik for each corner string) should solve the stability issue to the point you could stack cans to the ceiling.
@@jacobc9221 at any moment, the bike wheel is mostly suspended by the 2-4 spokes at the 11-1 clock positions. because spokes are stronger in tension than compression, the spokes at the bottom of the wheel flex and are essentially slack. So the weight of the bike system is hanging from the rim. as the wheel rotates around, the weight is transferred to the new spokes moving to the topmost position.
No matter how much tension those strings can hold, there is still a full force of compression on the wood supporting the string. This can still only hold as much as the wood could, but with a design that weakens the wood structure and adds more points of complexity for problems to develop along. Tension forces are great for connecting two sturdy masses when you want lighter weight, or more flexibility, but it can never be a standalone support. Bike tires are held in place by the tension in the spokes, which makes them far lighter, however the center of the tires where the spokes connect and the outer rim are still both feeling the full force of the bikes weight. Long story short, the design isn't any less limited by the strength of wood, and the strings don't make it more effective at almost anything.
“Reaching for a drink can be such a pain, which is why I put the drink high up on an unstable platform where it can be knocked over in at least four distinct ways. Now reaching for it is the least of your concerns!”
I hope that saying reaching for it is the least of your concerns is sarcastic because it would be one of the forefronts of your concern when you are reaching for it because you would be concerned about accidentally disturbing the tension.
Accurate observation. You could theoretically tighten the outer strings to make it more stable or use segments of string with relatively strong magnets to avoid that problem.
I made on in 7th grade for a stem class and my teacher said that we could make it out of whatever we want so I went the full mile and built the top out of wood and the frame out of tube steel and welds and I used actual chain for the tension part. It ended holding up to 700 lbs
That looks really cool to make but I would be way too afraid to actually use a tensegrity table with drinks because with my luck it will unbalance itself and I'll have a huge mess to clean up.
Try with weights instead of super high & light cans and youll probably test the weight better than the stability. i feel like the higher weights would keep it tense
one thing is wrong. every rope plays a role in it not only the middle piece. for.it to be right you would have to place a object of perfectlybalanced center perfectly in the center. Every string is either tensed or compressed and the only reason for the middle one is the balance and its not under the most tension. the most tension is on the longest strings that are on the trnsed side.

Can you expand on that?

It lost stability due to the elastic stretching of the middle string and thus allowed all 4 corners strings to become compressed
