Jammer watches his calorie intake because he's an athlete, he makes sure to eat enough for it to sustain him during practice probably. that's the "right reasons"
Evan knows that because he has to, he eats purely to survive so he's probably memorised which foods are the most calorie-dense for the cheapest. that's the "wrong reasons"

In the Adventuring Academy episode on world building, Brennan comments that he thinks Harry Potter hs some of the best world building of any fantasy book in recent memory - for example, all of us who read the books as kids still remember our Hogwarts house when we grow up. He uses the point to say something about how strong worldbuilding doesn’t necessarily mean clear or good logistics, then rants about owls being natures slowest bird. I think it’s an awesome point!!
brennan introducing his character in the most “dm turned first time player” kind of way was incredible. the intense detail of the bunks and everything
Adding little tangents like that is the sign of brilliant character making in my book. You really got the sense that Evan knows his stuff when it comes to surviving out in the streets

I love how Lou always plays someone with a positive masculine spin.
The sports jock type is usually a bad guy, but seeing him being so instantly friendly and uplifting to his new friends is great, and really reassuring.
Positive masculinity is always welcome in media
This entire series has basically been a montage of positive role models and it's excellent.

A lot of the jocks these days tend to be very "no person left behind" type people, I've noticed. Probably from being part of a team and having to lift each other up and support. Which is awesome.

Brennan has said he spends his summers volunteering at summer camps and given that Evan Kelmp was living homeless in unrented summer camps it is entirely possible that Evan Kelmp is based on real people that Brennan has met.

Then the third type of player(that people don't speak about often out of fear... or just forgetfulness):
The one who has read the rule books, and knows how all the things work, and builds a character that will completely wreck your shiz. Commonly pairs with creative (spiteful) DM/GM

My PCs entered a shop and a 20 minutes shopping time became a 1 hour long dialogue with a totally improvised npc

The way Aabria played out the JK Rowling original idea of saying wizards just magic away their poop instead of using plumbing, and Lou just going "I wanna go home" was absolute gold

The complete incompetence of the adults who ignore children with weapons of mass destruction is one of my favorites but the poop, quidditch and stupid building layout making everyone late for class are some of my favorites… lol
Like, it sounds fun… but going to Hogwarts would be an actual nightmare… it would be stressful, frustrating and unfair, especially if you’re not famous or part of Gryffindor and the simplest tasks are so over complicated that it just ages you want to give up… haha then, when you graduate you know how to murder people pretty good and make your dishes wash themselves but you’re probably going to have to escape from prison using magic when you get arrested for tax fraud, or you’ll die a horrible fiery death when you’re flying along and get shot down on your broom by the Air Force for breaching airspace laws and they assume something that small and fast is an enemy missile. So you’re a dead fugitive who just started world war 3 because the adults at Hogwarts are incompetent at best and maliciously ineffective at worst.
@@DanteYewToob I'm pretty sure the assumption is that after going to Hogwarts you would stay in the magical world with a job in that world selling books or getting involved with the magical government or police like Harry did. Since the wizard world is so isolated from the rest of humanity there is little expectation for you to interact with the muggle world at all, outside of jobs specifically pertaining to maintaining apical secrecy.

I love how Jammer interacts with Evan because it’s very the energy of that nice jock that everyone gets along with for good reason. He doesn’t always get what’s going on be he’s willing to level with you, also him being on a sports team would mean he’s better at helping people come down from that’s anger because of that fighting on the court stuff

@@rheegret8405it’s implied that the reason why Evan “bounced around Iowa” is because his foster families kept dying. I don’t remember that ever being confirmed but since he has no family, is living alone at 17 with a shadow devil, and mentions seeing his dad rip open his own rib cage it’s kind of easy to assume all those who get close to him (like foster families) die.
@@OpossumOnTheMoon I mean close to the end of the episode he did say he lost a lot of housing situations because of how dangerous he is, so I think it's safe to say even if they weren't outright killed they were at least hurt or under threat in some way

The Dream-Evan dynamic is amazing, because it's really like mental illness. It's glamorised in the media, it's sometimes seen as desirable to be moody/broody/dark/tortured, while in reality when you're experiencing it, it's a living hell. And Brennan and Erika show this perfectly, how terrible Evan life's is, and how Dream who never had to struggle her whole life cannot understand, and only sees the surface that seems desirable.
And that actually ties in to one of the worst aspects of evil (including mental illness): on the surface, it's desirable, it's fascinating, it draws you in, it really seems to be worth it. But once you're in, you realise how false these appearances were and how actually horrible it is.
Lou is an *amazing* roleplayer. I can vividly see Jammer in my head when he comments on private school being weird.

I love how desperate Aabria is to move on with the story but the gang just really enjoy roleplaying asking how the hell wizard society functions lmao
TBF she only has four frickin' episodes. I really wish they gave her more time. Even in EXU she got eight 4-hour sessions. I get that CH isn't running on CritRole money and this isn't the only series they're running, but I need more of this frankly, especially the latter tourney episode. That could've been a multi-episode arc unto itself IMHO.
I'm suprised they didn't bring up how they know what America is and why they speak in modern english instead of medieval etc. etc.
@@Squeekysquid my interpretation of the wizarding world's awareness of technology was just that they don't pay attention to things they don't need, 'cause they have magic. Like, yes they know America exists, that's relevant info. But they don't need lightbulbs or telephones or airplanes, they have magic for those things. They use quill pens because they have self-filling inkwells & therefore don't need ballpoints. Not knowing about McDonald's dollar cones, though? That's just ignorance.

Brennan is such an amazing actor. His physicality for Evan is so unique to this character. He fiddles a lot normally, but not this way. The fist clenching and shaking when he's nervous is amazing to me. It's almost like he's trying to hold in the magic through the self-soothing technique of having closed fists. Amazing!
I love how Aabria moves as a bird. She just looks so uncanny with her movement and I love her for it.

Sam's owl also knew about Mixer, and seems to have undertood the concept of a mukbang. Those birds a more in touch with the muggle world than we realize.

I know it’s an old comment, but phones only “ring” because people used bells to call people (servants usually) just not from so far away, so they’d still know about “ringing” without phones
I just love how Erika Ishii changed her makeup and outfits as the series went on to fit with her character. She's one of my favourite players on D20.
Her Drider Queen in Escape from the Bloodkeep is such a joy.
I totally didn't see her whole arc coming and I loved it!

Came back here after the GMs of Exandria Roundtable specifically to watch Brennan's whole world get rocked by Aabria's first "Here's what you DON'T see..." You really can see the potential of that GM-ing technique start spinning through his brain at a thousand miles a minute lol

Brennan's games are all about systems based, logical, meticulous worldbuilding based in real world history, hard magic systems. Aabria's choice to specifically focus this campaign on whimsy, illogical wizards, and spontaneity is so frigging genius to contrast with his style and mess with him, for real yall dropout is $5 a month get on it!
I've got money anxiety. What is on dropout in general so I can justify buying it myself? 😅😅

As someone who went to an English public school I am endlessly amused at the constant "Is this a wizard thing or is it just because we're in the UK?" of this.
Its so interesting that Dream is like, still only seeing Evan as a "character" and not really thinking of the actual, heavy shit of what he's saying. Like in his world, real people died around him, real atrocities happened, but she's just seeing it as though it was words in a book
Alot of those scene kids are like that. Half are people who have been through the shits, and the other half are acting like life's a storybook.

honestly, really great character creation on the players part. Actually accurate characterization of a modern teenage character (I’d know I am one), especially one who previously spent so much time online. I haven’t watched the rest of the series but I hope she starts understanding the difference between actual problems and how the world really works and the fiction-y part of it that people grow so accustomed to online. God I just love characterization in general.

Stupid bipolar Iowa winter’s, the the summers are hot as hell and not like an Arizona heat but like feels like your walking though syrup humid heat and there’s often not much between those extremes expect autumns are pretty nice
As someone with their own “Disney Princess effect”, I can’t imagine being annoyed with it. I’ve been able to drink from a stream with deer close enough to touch without stretching my arm, gotten handed seeds by a chipmunk, and play with wild wolf pups with the parents looking on content because of it.

I always find Brennan's width of knowledge amazing. He's right we don't have freedom of speech in the UK, we have freedom of expression, which is similar but has a few restrictions that they don't have in the USA. Not many people even in the UK know that, so props to Brennan.

The look on Brennan Lee Mulligan’s face during this entire episode it’s just cello and broken. He is so in character.
I love this so much. All the others have a slightly funny, yet magical moment when they get their letter. Then along comes Brennan's story & I start getting horror vibes like as if Even Kelmp believes the Owl is going to kill & eat him.
Also, now that I'm getting into it, Everyone else is slightly confused but excited. Even Kelmp starts acting like he's suffering from split personality disorder, while sharing a body with Satan. LOL

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but I love how Aabria made like, the evil version of the "trio" from Harry Potter. Like, mean girl Hermione (Tallulah), brawny tough guy Ron (Fergus) and nerdy "used to live in the NAMP world" Harry (Digsby). That was really cute :) I have all day for dunking on Harry Potter's nonsense, and this was the first series I watched through 100% from Dimension 20. It's a ton of fun, and worth the Dropout sub, for sure.
Brennan is such a great actor. You can tell just with his posture that he truly is Evan Kelmp in these sessions and it just baffles me.

This 4-part series could've easily turned into a 5-part series with an entire episode dedicated to the students being baffled by the headmistress' lack of knowledge of the previous couple of centuries.
I think they needed to immediately take her on a field trip to the 21st century! No way I'd attend a school whose headmistress didn't know anything about my world!
Actually, spoilers, I think she may just be pretending? In the finale, Sam stalls for time by explaining the plot of Terminator 2 to her, and she reaches this point where she stops feigning ignorance and is all, "Yep, it's a movie about a robot man, got it, please leave." As in she seems not at _all_ confused by words like "robot" or "movie."
