- The Container Store vs. Dollar Tree | Save vs. Splurge Organizing Products
I’ve picked five commonly used organizational tools and products from The Container Store and set them up in a face-off against their Dollar Tree counterparts. While it’s up to you to decide where to splurge and where to save, there’s one particular product where I actually think the Dollar Tree version is better!
Where do you decide to cut back and save? What items are a must splurge? Let me know in the comments!

I saved the Amazon boxes to block a dog from going into dining room. I used different sizes and put them on the pantry shelf and they fit perfectly. I would like to cover them some day. I did put labels I printed off, Cans, Snacks, Bread, Pasta, etc etc. The square boxes hold so much more than the round or oval. They were free and work better than anything I could buy. The straight sides mean the boxes fit snug against each other. Love my cardboard boxes.
I like the clear tall bins
The display behind your desk is beautiful
Thanks!
Speaking of desk ... Laura what does the rest of it look like and where did you find it? .. i'm tuckered out searching for an affordable good quality white work table/desk.
I’d love to see some comparisons between the Container Store and IKEA. I use dollar tree items a lot (since there’s no CS or IKEA near me), but agree with all the negatives you mentioned. When I’ve used some of IKEA’s organization products, I’ve been happy. But, I’d love to see you do this with IKEA also! :)
That's a great idea! I do have several IKEA products and I do really like them.
Thank you for showing us the pantry, that was a lot of work and much appreciated.
Just letting you know there were about 4 different sizes of those handled containers at Big Lots. Love, Love, Love them.
I use the Big Lots ones too!
Yes!! Big Lots has the best price and size options for these. I used a coupon on them, and paid about $1.50 each, for the Large ones. Big Lots for the win!! 😁🙌
I must say I'm tempted by the Container Store products that LOOK prettier but those savings are no joke!
So true- it's a tough choice.
Ty for the comparisions. . Laura you look extra pretty in this video.
For the pantry, use a shelf liner so the containers can fit evenly or foam board. Also for cohesiveness I would spray paint the dollar tree bins all one color, there is spray paint for plastic. It would make the pantry look a little more high end. The green and blue makes it look cheap.
That pantry needs to be 5 wood shelves not 3 wire ones to be efficient and slide bins out.
Oh how I wish my local Dollar Tree actually carried most of these products! Whhyyy can’t all Dollar Trees have the same items?!?!
I also loooove the clear organizing bins (Container Store) you used in your pantry. I have lots of them in my craft room and in my pantry.
Yes, they are one of my go to's.
Thank you for sharing the differences, it was very helpful!
Good info. You can also use the clear cutting boards from dollar tree to place on your wire shelves to balance the shelves too.
Good idea for the shelves.
Dollar tree has the envelope in to pack and in different colored they are with schoolsupplies
The blue poly envelopes from DT also come in clear, pink, green. I use them in my classroom for students to keep up with papers for individual projects. They wipe clean which meets Covid protocol.
U look so nice n this video. Plus great comparison BTW the 2 stores. Keep inspiring.
As much as I know sometimes the dollar store ones are just as effective, I just cannot get past the horrific colors. My pantry would look like a kindergarten classroom. I think aesthetics is an important part of my organization. I make sure I LOVE any items I purchase and most dollar store bins, don't spark joy.
Spray paint!
Obviously, The Container Store bins are sturdier and, really, better. But at Dollar Store there are white rectangular ones and they come in different sizes; I would never use the rounds ones for a pantry. I love the color of the acrylic $15 one.
Yes, I'd like to another video sometime where I use rectangular ones.
I wish my DollarTree(s) have the plastic document holders! Thanks for this awesome video and all your expertise. And GIRLLLLL!!! You are wasting SOOO much space in your pantry. You could DOUBLE your space by putting heavy duty liners on those shelves and place another set of shelves on top of those shelves.
Loved this. I use Dollar Tree bins in my pantry (which is a set of restaurant-style open metal shelves, not a cabinet or room, sadly). I've found the drawer organizers and other low bins work great to corral things like boxes which don't need support but tend to wander and waste space (or fall off the side in my case). I might splurge to organize my cans now that I see the difference as I was using the square Dollar Tree bins and they aren't ideal with the very angled sides.
So glad you loved it! I used to use Dollar Tree bins in my pantry, also.
I have that red handled bin, but in turquoise blue from the dollar tree. They also come in that apple green too. And they are hit or miss at dollar tree , you can’t always find them.
Thanks for the great info. Very useful.
Thanks - so glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome video and how to... and comparison video... it is so helpful. Please make more comparisons or demo of diff items you try in your home
The bins that have the handle : Red/Dollar Tree, White/Container Store. I have found the clear with handle like the container Store in several different sizes at Big Lots prices starting at $1.99. The one that is $1.99 fits prescription bottles.
Thanks for sharing! I never thought to look at Big Lots - great idea.
I have used my plastic baskets from the 99 cent store for 20 years, they keep my linen closet and bath items etc. so organized . The Container Store is simply too expensive for me.
Great video, Laura! It was so good of you to go through all the work of transferring your pantry items to the Dollar Tree bins to give us the visual. Thank you. I'm a new subscriber. I'm grateful to Carly Adams of Tidy Revival -- she mentioned your channel and this video in particular in her recent newsletter!
So glad you enjoyed it. I do think it's super helpful to actually see it. And welcome - so glad to have you as a subscriber.
To solve the wire shelf problem my hubs put linoleum tiles on the shelves, so smaller items wouldn’t be so awkward
Great information!!
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it.
Great video! ❤️ I always end up spray painting my Dollar Tree storage containers, since they tend to come in such limited color options 😂😂
So true!
I'm an an area with a bunch of Dollar Tree's. No clue if it's like this everywhere but I've noticed that different times of the year the same containers will be available in other colors. Especially back to school time!
With the money you saved from the dollar tree bins, you could get a better shelving system do utilize that space. That would be the best bang for your buck!
My question is-- what do people used canned artichoke hearts for? :) And, thank you for this, am enjoying watching organised people instruct me how to get my new house in gear.
The multi purpose bin from the container store, it would be much more cost effective to throw down the money on the better quality because slowly you will be replacing the cheaper bins over and over again!!!
your make up is beautiful today.
Love brix. So pricy, but the dividers keep my essential oils safely upright in my bathroom drawer.
I love them also - I especially love the straight sides, but it is a splurge.
Dollar tree has white dish pans that are a much nicer sturdy plastic.
I LOVE organizing with small & larger white dishpans!!
You have sold me on the container store. I really should not watch videos like this because now I seriously want to go shopping at the Container Store. Thank you
It's one of my favorite stroes!
You can spray paint the dollar tree item any color you wish with paint for plastic.
Great video! Subscribed! I like the tips you gave and what to think about when choosing containers. I have the Walmart version of the bins with handles and they are fine but one handle broke maybe due to the weight of what I had in there. How sturdy are the container store ones?
I think the Container Store ones are pretty sturdy. They are definitely stronger than the Dollar Tree version.
Laura Smith thank you for your reply. ❤️
For wire shelving put a cheap vinyl placemat
Love your dress! Where did you purchase from?
Thanks - I got the dress from Lularoe.
Thanks for doing this video. I noticed that you looked in the wrong direction in the beginning of the video. I had some trouble with that too.
I love the Container Store multipurpose bins, too. I like to use the medium size and lay cans down for things I buy in bulk at Costco, like tomato sauce.
Great idea!!
I found Smead End Tab Poly Envelope, Straight-Cut Tab, 1" Expansion, Flap with Hook-and -Loop Closure, Letter Size, Clear, 5 per Pack at Amazon.com for $9.49 - that's about $1.90 each. I have been using them for years and I love them.
Thanks for sharing - good to know. I love how convenient it is to order from Amazon.
@@GetOrganizedHQ ... my checking acct says it is TOO convenient to order from Amazon! 😉
Hi. Can you compare container store vs dollar tree vs Ikea? Great video. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Thanks for the idea!
You could cut ELFA shelf liners to fit your wire shelves, making it easy to glide out the baskets with feet. Unfortunately, those shelf liners would eat up the savings achieved by using dollar tree products. On the other hand, maybe someone could figure out a smart DIY solution to this. Even sturdy poster board might be a useful idea. I’ve done poster board drawer liners, cut and taped to fit, then wrapped in moisture-resistant, wipeable contact paper.
I am subscribed, but I have not delved into your archives. If you have not done a Walmart comparison to container store that might be interesting. I found sturdy plastic rectangular bins (White with round perforations in the geometric grid) and bought a number of them at Walmart. They fit perfectly into the shelves in my closet, and I pre-sort my laundry into them. It is very easy to see when I have enough to do a load of one particular type. I even have one been labeled “tumble and ignore“ that I can run when I don’t have time to attend to folding and hanging clothes to dry. I also use them under sinks to hold clean towels and other things. Very nice when the plumber comes. I got some smaller ones, but I have not found them as useful. Walmart also had some stainless steel vertical drawer units that were able to fit nicely into a base cabinet that was another budget winner for kitchen function. It would have been much more expensive to do ELFA there. That said, I have done a lot of ELFA around the house and garage and I have not been disappointed. It’s great to be able to reconfigure things as needed. Thoughtful planning, repurposing containers, decluttering, breaking down big goals into small projects and waiting for the annual sales has made it a lot more budget friendly to do those great projects.
That's a great idea to cut the Elfa liners for your wire shelves. I definitely don't love how everything falls through the wires.
I love the Wal-Mart ideas. I haven't done a video about Wal-Mart, but they do have a lot of organizational items. I also have some kitchen favorites from there.
Awesome and informative video. New subbie here. Christina
Thanks - glad to have you!!
Why don't you store your cans directly on the shelves and stack them on top of each other to use more space? Why do they have to be in a basket or bin? Seems more difficult that way, to me. Because, you can't clearly see what cans you have. You have to pull stuff down and sort through it.
The cans don't stand well on my wire shelves. I also think storing in bins gives a neater look. I've tried can risers in the past but my cans are usually too many different sizes. But I think storing right on the shelves is a great option if I was more limited on space.
I've never heard of the container store until joining the Sweet Life but have yet to check out their stuff. So I'm used to Dollar Tree stuff.
The Container Store is so fun!
That’s an awful lot of money spent. Also, I agree with a lot of comments that your pantry space could be utilized more efficiently with more shelves albeit you would have to put lighter things higher up for safety reasons. You could cover the wire racks with a board or even a wrapped cardboard using pretty contact paper for your dollar store bins to slide out more easily. I guess I just don’t use that many containers so difficult for me to relate to using all the container store bins. When you buy at the dollar store it will be up to purchaser to read the reviews of the products to see which ones hold up the best or at least trial only a few to start with. After all they really just cost a dollar. What about the clear shoe bins with lids at Walmart they are 88c each and might be good for a lot of items just putting the lid underneath if you don’t use it but that way you don’t lose it. Thank you for all of your effort and comparing the products.
Do you ever worry about the environment using/purchasing all that plastic? It may serve you now, but what about future generations?
The green doesn’t look near as neat and tidy.
