  • Star Trek Beyond is out today! Star Trek Into Darkness has been dismissed by most star trek fans for "borrowing" some key elements from previous films. Critics were generally kind, so it's the purists who are wrong this time. Here's everything right with Star Trek Into Darkness. Next week fuzzy wins.

The edit when Khan kills Marcus is just superb filmmaking. Some people would complain that a scene like that needs blood and gore and an R-rating, but Abrams just knocked it out of the park with that cracking sound, Alice Eve's piercing scream and Pine's look of absolute horror. It didn't need the blood and gore - the horror of the situation was conveyed with simple good cutting, sound editing and acting.

Not gonna lie, I didn't really understand what had happened when I first saw it. In the beginning, I thought he'd simply snapped his neck really hard. Then I thought he might have ripped his head from his body like a Mortal Kombat finisher. I actually had to look at the way his shoulders moved his arms inwards to realize that he'd fucking compressed his skull into his brain like a regular person crushes a soda can.
Considering how Augments have roughly 5 times the strength of a regular human, even a lazy Augment could utterly destroy the world's best strongmen. Furthermore, 235 kg, 520 lbs, or 2,300 newtons of force is required to crush the strongest parts of the human skull. Regular humans, even at their peak, can only generate roughly half of that. Take someone who is 5 times stronger, and factor that in? You get a teenager who can turn your skull into paste, let alone a fully grown adult.

I'd like to say that this movie changed something massive for me. Before I saw it, I couldn't care less about sci-fi. No Star Trek, no Star Wars, no Asimov, no Mass Effect nothing. I saw this one (before 2009 Star Trek even) kind of by accident, and it just blew me away. The beauty of the CGI, the characters, the scope of the story and mainly the concept, this wild possibility of the future, all of it.
I'm a complete convert now. I'm watching the Star Trek TV shows (luckily all on Netflix, winning) and I'm a huge Star Wars fan these days as well. My favourite recent book series I've read was sci-fi "In Remembrance of Earth's Past" by Cixin Liu, I highly recommend it. I've developed an academic side interest in astrophysics. All over the last three years, thanks to this movie. So whatever flack it might get, for me, it showcased what Star Trek was always supposed to be ... about wonder and possibilities and adventure.
I'd like to add that I really love your CinemaWins channel. I get so tired of all the complaining online about great movies ... sure, sometimes it's all-in-good-fun teasing, which I do enjoy, and that's fine. But all the hating? Sometimes I wonder if anyone even enjoys these movies anymore. Why not sit back and have fun and revel in all the awesomeness? Anyway, that rant's over, just thanks for making these. They're awesome and like a breath of fresh air. :-)

Yeah, it gets very boring and tiresome listening to people complain about something that they claim to love so dearly over and over again. I'm unfamiliar with Star Trek, but I see this kind of hate with many other franchises; Marvel, Star Wars....it's all really horrible ranting. At some point, you have to question why people are even watching these movies at all if they're just going to complain about them instead of having fun like they're supposed to.

My dad is one of the biggest Trekkers I have ever meet and he gave Star Trek 2009 a 13/10. I forget what he gave Into Darkness but it was still as high. So he loved both films. Me personally I feel they are great films. I cry at George Kirk's death and love seeing Nero get his butt handed to him at the end of 2009 every time. This movie was my first introduction to Mr. Cumberbatch and he really made a great Khan and I really couldn't see anyone else fill the shoes of Ricardo Montalban (may he rest in peace) but Cumberbatch did and did so with the flare I was hoping for any Star Trek villain to have. As for the Kirk death scene I cry like a baby every single time because of the emotional depth that scene has.

I know he denied it himself, but its Khans role that makes me think that Benedict would have made an excellent Thrawn.
That urges to agression (,,You should have let me sleep") and his complete poker face while explaining some things (,,My name is Khan" whole scene and ,,If you think you are safe in warp...") gives me chills every time and makes me realize I can't unsee it.
To those who don't know in nutshell:
Benedict said he wouldn't want to be blue.

JJ Abrams said that he decided not to use a minority or dark skin actor because he did not want to reinforce the stereotype that exists today...that anyone that looks Middle Eastern is a terrorist. Yes, Khan is a terrorist. Abrams understands that the power and influence that the media has. I was indifferent about who plays Khan, but Abrams' reason for his decision is understandable.

    • @gigaronin2680

Chuong Do I personally find that reason to be bull crap because no one should look at a villain and say that person of some race can't be portrayed as the villain. Anyone can be anything regardless of their race. If the actor can nail the role, that should be praised.

    • @tinfoil_hat7727
      @tinfoil_hat7727 6 лет назад +240

The problem is context. We don't live in a world where anyone can be anything regardless of their race yet. How many brown protagonists have you seen in the media lately? Now tally that next to brown villains. Not saying that Abrams was right in whitewashing Khan, just challenging the idea that we live in some post-racial society where those kinds of considerations don't matter.

    • @FunSizeSpamberguesa
      @FunSizeSpamberguesa 6 лет назад +147

Alexandra Tangalos The thing few people seem to realize is that he didn't actually whitewash anything -- Ricardo Montalbon was Mexican-born, but he was a white son of Spanish immigrant parents and played the role of Khan in brownface makeup (in the TV show; in the movie he had more of a spray-tan). He wasn't as paper-white as Cumberbatch, but he was still a white guy.

Benedict absolutely OWNED the character of Kahn. Were there other actors who could have been a better fit? Sure. Alan Rickman comes to mind had he not passed so untimely, or even Anthony Hopkins... even though he's older. But being as how the rest of the Kelvin timeline crew is far younger than they were in the original timeline TWOK, it's not at all a stretch to portray Kahn as younger as well. Benedict Cumberbatch did a GREAT job and brought to life his own interpretation of Kahn in a way that pays homage to the original.

This is great. I personally loved this movie and the character arcs involved in it.
Haters can go to hell, this is still Star Trek and it's still good, it just can never compete to the magical notion of what star trek "Is" that fans have in their heads.
(Usually consisting of ideals and standards of the t.v. series that the films don't have time to explore)
What no-one remembers was the "Is he-isn't he" khan thing was a massive deal in the run up to the film but in reality it managed to disguise the true villain of the flim, Marcus, so it did a pretty damn fine job
Also: No points for the entering warp scenes in this film? The one at the start after they leave the underwater hiding is pretty epic, it's like they threw all the warp effects from previous films and series into a blender and merged them together.
    Pretty stunning special effects imo.

@@slcRN1971 and besides this movie never really ripped off the wrath of Khan. The wrath of Khan was a pure blooded revenge story. This was a section 31 conspiracy. Something that is never really looked at that much in the franchise and something that Discovery never did enough justice to.

I remember seeing this in theaters with mostly older couples who probably grew up with or knew Star Trek TOS. I had already guessed the reveal before I saw this (you can’t have ST2 and Khan NOT be in it somehow). When he delivered that line everyone in the theatre gasped. It was so amazing. Easily my favorite Kelvin timeline movie to date. It’ll be hard to beat.

Old video, I know. However, you did miss something a lot of Trek fans forget. In Trek Roddenberry wanted humanity from an idealized society, what we could be. As a result, many of TOS episodes were varied in theme and concept and completely up to the viewer for interpretation. Trek is about perception and interpretation and not an ironclad timeline. That's why so many books were approved, whether they fit the timeline or not. The remake of Star Trek would have been thrilling to Roddenberry as he suggested a reimaging of it as far back as the initial proposal for Star Trek Phase Two.
"Real" Trek has always been subject to interpretation and I happen to like the movies. Grudgingly, at first, but still. I really enjoyed them. Trek is supposed to be entertaining, but more importantly, it's supposed to inspire thought and hope. These movies do just that.

i agree that people get hung up on comparisons, rather than viewing the film as though new to the genre, and judging it for its own merits. I personally got dewy eyed at the Kirk Death scene, it worked on me more than the original death scene, Zachary's delivery was brilliant, that transition from pain to pure rage, awesome. Also Bendedict nailed Khan, making it is own rather than copying the original actor's performance, so that they can stand on their own merits. So i was surprised and dissapointed that it got flak from die hard fans, time to move on people, this is a new timeline after all.

The new Star Trek movies is what got me into Star Trek in the first place, and it was seeing this movie in theaters with my then-boyfriend that got me interested in them. Mostly because I didn't really know Star Trek even existed for a long time because my mom wasn't a huge sci-fi person and I didn't know much about the original show until I was like 16. I feel like these movies get wayyyy more shit than they deserve, not being "real Star Trek" and all, but as you said in the last video, the new movie reboots have opened up Star Trek for an entire new generation of fans.

My issue with Khan in this movie was that the original Khan was always smiling and so polite and courteous only for him to have brief moments where you see how he really is, while Benedict Khan just seems angry all the time. So while yeah they cast a white dude to be an Indian character originally played my a Mexican actor so the new doesn't look like the old, I also really feel that the new doesn't act or feel like the old either.

    • @kathrinlindern2697
      @kathrinlindern2697 3 года назад +2

Thank you! I think the video said it well with "if he played anyone but Khan...". And the thing is, the plot would have worked just as well. But this - taking a character that is Indian, as indicated by the name, and letting him be played by a white dude for that one moment of "OMG HE IS KHAN!!!" was not worth it. John Harrison was a good villain in his own right, he did not need to be Khan.

Also, I'm quite looking forward to make a video about Warcraft. Critics immidietly went full: "Its a video game movie, therefore its bad". If assassin's creed gonna end up criticly succesful because: "oh fassbender is so good" I might kill a lot of critics. I mean he is an amazing actor, but assassins creed games don't really shine storywise as much as Warcraft.
That film should have made more money in America. I hope with these ticket sales will be able to make Warcraft 2, than a Lord of the Clans, than the best part of the Warcraft story: Warcraft 3, and the Frozen Throne.

High Sounding Whistle and a calm humming sound but still having the Strong feels that tells us, we are Peaceful but we can and will fight back, but when the Vengence closes in, Overshadowing the Enterprises sound itself, its basically a Predator Staking its Prey, a Rich, Deadly Buzz Sound and heavy low but Deady Hum, a Battle Dreadnought Showing there is no Escape, no Fighting... your at the Mercy of the ship that will not stop until its Target is Destroyed... Slowly... Plate by Plate... dame i think got deep XD

I would have rather had that movie and then Batman fighting Superman makes more sense. You can have Flash come back and change everything and Superman can go back to being normal. Maybe even smile a bit lol. That way you can explain a unhinged and paranoid Batman, because he is in this crazy future where Superman has lost it.

I enjoyed Apocalypse quite a bit. First class and Days of Future Past set the bar so high, therefore I'm not too surprised Apocalypse fell short. They tried to cram too much into one movie. I'm usually against the money grab of "part 1 and part 2" final stories of major franchises, but apocalypse could have easily been 2 parts, and possibly a better, more coherent story.
All that said, I fell asleep during BvS. Once in the theatre, and again this week when I rented it from directv solely to see what I missed when I fell asleep in the theatre. That movie has some serious pacing issues. At least Affleck was a strong batman and gal Gadot seems to be ready to carry wonderwoman. Wins for both of them...???

Because of you and because of this channel, I now know what a dolly zoom is and how/why they can be be used properly (at 14:13), where the Enterprise jumps to warp past the Vengeance. The scene always had that disorienting feel of space bending with the power of the jump, and to me subconsciously solidifies the power of the Vengeance in that 'here's how strong the Enterprise is, now watch the Vengeance catch up like a parent running after a toddler' way.
Thank you for bringing your love, passion, and education of movies to the internet. It only makes said properties better.

6:39 It's easy to pull a CinemaSins comment here by asking, "Where's the blood on Khan's hands when he calls Spock?", but I'm going to rephrase that and say "It's nice to know that "Khan" was courteous enough to wash his hands before video-chatting Spock."

I wish CinemaSins would actually focus on movie errors like that a bit more, lately it seems to be running jokes (e.g. clíches, which are most often forgivable) or simply agreeing with internet criticism. It's rare to see genuine problems with the films on the channel, which makes it hard to take seriously.

I happen to love the scene when Spock is on the pad to get Khan and he switches his phasers to kill right before he beams down.

Love the PO'd Spock going fisticuffs with "super soldier" Kahn. It really drives home the whole reason Vulcans so value controlling emotion.

I love the way you give all the actors kudos! I was surprised to find some actors I didn't realize were in the film! Love your positive outlook. It's refreshing! Thank you, and the actors should thank you, too!

This is a top 5 favorite movie for me and I am not even a Star Trek fan, the film at its core from rising action to falling action to climax to the intro is absolutely brilliant. Cinematically this movie was close to perfection

Your mention of Bashir and section 31 made me wonder what would happen in the future of this new timeline
Would the dominion wars even happen?
Would the borg become an even more dangerous threat?
Would it even affect Archer (there is a LOT if time travel in star trek - enterprise) and start ANOTHER alternative timeline
I hope this gets mentioned in a future star trek film/show

Wow. This was my first video of yours that I have seen. 1) well done! You obviously put a lot of effort into your videos. 2) your ability to analyze the movie was spot on and extremely well thought out. Thanks for the great video!

It's been a while but I'll rewatch both this and the first movie purely to watch spock flip out after Kirk dies. That and my strange love of scenes where a character dies then comes back to life.
The same thing happens in lilo and stitch 2 and I love it. I swear that movie is underrated. Love how it shows that you can fail to notice someone close to you is suffering when you're too wrapped up in your own problems. "I kept saying how I needed you, but you needed me more"

Cumberbatch doesn't just chew the scenery. He has it with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. ;-)
