Looks like only 2 crew did the grand tour of the (relatively) airless moons of Saturn, while the other 8 spent all their time on Titan. I would have volunteered to be the "lucky two" - they got all the magnificent views of Saturn, unobstructed by the smoggy Titanian atmosphere - the rest of the crew can HAVE that! Plus, Enceladus - perhaps a much better chance of sampling a subsurface ocean than Europa.
Looks like a SNAP-10A reactor between those ion engines on Hermes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNAP-10A

I know this is sort of meta but the implication of this mission is they have cryo for the long trip, that suggests cellular repair technology. However, perhaps the reactor generates enough power for a electromagnetic shield to deflect the charged particles that make up the magnetosphere of Saturn.

For those guys who asking me about my modlist. Actually i don't know all mods i'm using, because this modpack, i'm playing with, it's created not by me, but by the one Russian guy, Andrey Vasilev. He is doing a great job by collecting all mods, and adapting them for RSS, fixing bugs, optimizing everything, and making them work if something is not working properly. He is a guru of the technical part of KSP, and i'm just using his product. I know the main mods of my version of the game, like RSS, RO, Real Fuels, B9 Aerospace, FASA, Near future, SSTU and so on, but i dont know all of them, because there are around 100 titles in my Game data. Even if I'll give you the list of all of my mods, and you'll install them, they will not work together without Andrey's optimization.
But if you want, here you can download torrent file of this modpack, it's size around 1 gb.

Wow, I've only played the game a few times (and suck at it) , but watching this video was more than just watching you play a game. I was so cool to see how you built the spaceship(s), landers, and everything else. It was like watching a NASA film on how they would do a Saturn mission (if they had the tech). Thanks so much, great video, loved the music.

    Subscribed!
That "Hermes" craft and lander combination is really sweet - had enough delta-v to visit all the major moons of Saturn in one mission, save Titan.
I can't help thinking that a "mass-leaner" mission might have involved parking all the components needed for the "Trans-Earth Injection," and the Titan exploration equipment, in Titan orbit, then take the "Hermes" and the small lander on the "Grand Tour" of the other moons. After that, return to Titan, and use more of a cylindrical lander, with blunt heat shield, 'chutes, landing legs, and rockets for landing and ascent, for the Titan surface mission. You could even refuel the lander from the ample supplies of methane in the atmosphere and on the surface of Titan! Wings, on the other hand, have been shown to be at a disadvantage for ferrying cargo from orbit, to a surface, and then back to orbit, both from the standpoints of volumetric efficiency and from mass. Besides, you must admit that you were AWFULLY lucky to find that flat plane on which to land "Daedalus" - practically a "runway!" ;-)

I dont have many views because im to lazy to do videos every week or even every day. I'm not like these youtube guys, like Scott Manley or Matt Lowne or anyone else. If i want something to show, i show it, if don't, i don't. Besides, filming something like this takes a lot of time and efforts, its not just playing the game anymore. You need to think not only about how to fly the rocket, but also how to get the beautiful footage. Sometimes you have to load one save for several times because you got a bad frame, or if you want to shoot the event from different angle

And maybe also add a powered uncrewed glider to rove in Saturn’s atmosphere. This was absolutely stellar (pun intended) in every respect nonetheless.

When the plane that landed on Saturn comes home with the mother ship still in orbit, the ion shuttle around Saturn and a base on Titan sounds like you could go again with not too much refueling, substitute the docks that were for transports with more fuel for sub optimal transfers and you could start ferrying equipment all around the Saturn system. Not that I expect you to repeat such a monumental task, just fun to think about the future potential of this mission.
Also with the accelerate through time-warp features and all the nuclear reactors did you think about going full ion for this mission?

Awesome Vid/Build! What mod are the nuclear turbojet engines in? Can't find them, and the modpack link in discription doesn't work anymore. Do you have a working link for the modpack by chance?

    • @alexchivilev
      @alexchivilev  5 лет назад +1

I belive this engine is from the Atomic Age mod. As for the link, no. The guy stopped supporting the modpack. I still have the last version installed on my PC but I need to ask the permission to upload it. Howewer i cant get in touch with the author, he is not responding my messages either on facebook, or anywhere else

Ok, some orbital construction, pretty standard fare for interplanetary m-
    “Launches 5-21”

Also, TSFH music, ridiculous missions in RSS+RO? I know maccollo didn’t invent that stuff, but I can’t get the comparison out of my head. You’re definitely matching their achievements.

Macollo was that guy who inspired me to shift from stock KSP to RSS. Watching his "Flags and fotprints on Venus", i said to myself: "One day i will do same mission". Since that moment It took me two years to plant my own flag on the surface of Venus.

Btw, there’s a game out called Simple Rockets 2, and I’m really enjoying the fact the devs of that game have made it easy to mod, including modding parts directly in the hangar menu, even on mobile devices! Working on Von Braun’s Aggregat series atm. Hope you cover the Kerbal Star Systems mod too.

yeah, the launch vehicle was totally inspired by Ares-5, the SLS predecessor. It actually uses same engines, RS-68 and space shuttle's boosters. The only difference is the number of the boosters andthe volume of the tank.

The most uninteresting - launching carrier rockets - has been given a lot of time. And the most interesting thing is the view of the apparatus in orbit - almost not shown.
When and how was the centrifuge deployed? Why was it cut out?
