My favorite thing about the leveling system is how Pirate uses it as a device to show who a character is as a person Like there may be a carpenter who’s main class is actually [Catfriend Beast Tamer], which would immediately tell you that he spends most of his time and energy with his cat, who he values very highly. It tells you so much about the character - who they are, how they spend their time, what they value, how they may react to any given situation. It’s very cool how it’s used
This is a really good point! I appreciated Pirate gave more information on this when Erin did not obtain the taxation class while beating eveyone at chess. THis is countered by her lack of leveling in the warrior class, as she does not want to travel down that path.
good review, thanks for adding more voices to wandering inn! just a note, book 9 is not volume 9, so if you go to the website keep in mind were you are in the story, the table of contents should guide you to were keep reading!
Thank you for the guidance! I am visually impaired, so sadly I have to wait on the audio version. Though, when I record my review on Tears of Liscore, I will make sure to mention this so no one runs into any spoilers!
I think the leveling system is basically perfect. I think book 3 uses it to its full potential with the florist. I think the series peeked at that point. Overall, i think this is a 3/5 series. I had fun with it, but it's not necessarily something id recommend to most people. I really like the pacing of these books, which I think is not the prevaling oppinion. Favourites: Solstice, Goblins, Doctor, Florist, Magnolia Least Favorites: Ryoka, Linkin, Floss
In regards to recommending it to people, I completely agree. This series is a commitment. I learned that the hard way when I got my friend into Fantasy and gave them the wheel of time as the third series they "needed" to read. It ended up slowing their journey down to where I eventually had o tell him to put it down and try something new. So I am right therewith you, though this series has a specials place in my heart!
If it hadn’t started in 2016 I would have said it was written by AI. It is more than twice as prolific as Brandon Sanderson in amount written in a year.
Hey ther Kyaw! Really appreciate the support. This is a new term for me, when you say "spoiler character profile" are you reffering to a video dedicated to a specific charractor and their journey? If so, I think that would be a great idea!
it kinda looks like balzac the human comedies series, where he tried to create a vivid experience in its full aspects of what it would be like to live in nineteenth century france with characters and stories that intertwined constantly. Seems like a fun read and a huge commitment at the same time, probably after the end of the memoirs of casanova (another huge commitment at 1.2 million words and 3500 pages lol) i will take a dip on TWI and see what its all about
Great video! You said this series is dense! I have only read the first 2 and I didn't find it dense it all! Does it get more dense over time? I've quite enjoyed the first 2 books!
Haha, I guess it is all subjective at the end of the day! I am listening to the audiobooks and am up to book 9. If you listen straight through it is about 250 hours, so when I say dense I am referring to the amount of time devoted. This is one of my biggest pros though! I am addicted to audiobooks, so a series this long is fantastic! Be sure to keep reading. It only gets better!
I have started book 1 of this series this month and I know they are long but I have heard nothing but great things about this series, so I cannot wait to spend months on this series 😊 I am a slow reader so may take me a year haha 😂😂
Hey there Crimson! I am happy that you have decided to try out TWI! It only gets better and better. You are also right on the money with it taking a long time to complete however! As long as your enjoying it though, that is a plus in my book!
I'm up to book 11, I skip anything related to Flos Reimarch or Othius the Fourth.(The King of Destruction/Blighted King) I feel like they are their own end. King of destruction can't win, otherwise he will lose his destruction title(why he slept), Blighted will always be at war, have demons to fight otherwise he will lose the blighted title. I'm thinking of dropping Niers Astoragon(the titan) soon as he is the worse strategist I've ever heard of despite him being the best. Book 11 has him doing an exercise in which he cheats and then proclaims how he's the best strategist. It would be like him playing chess and swapping out all his pawns for queens and then going on to win and then claiming he is a grand master. Levels do they matter or don't they? With Flos - the kind of destruction who is leading an almost forgotten/dead kingdom that has sold off any magical gear, has food issues, most of the army has been killed off. So your low level, starving, ill equipped troops can win battles some how. Sure Flos might be a high level, but it shouldn't make up for 100000 troops being under leveled, starving under equipped troops. Ryoka Griffin story line is good, except for her not wanting to level, like she knew she would level BEFORE she would level so she interrupted it. She refuses to level because she thinks its cheating, yet she drinks potions like energy drinks, which have more in common with drugs then with energy drinks. Pirateaba is starting to belittle their characters and in the next chapter has to build them up. The skill system is mostly good, except for anything merchant related. Like a merchant getting a skill to make someone buy something they don't need, or charging more for an item. Think if you go shopping and use the same merchant and the merchant leveled up and has a new skill to charge more. If you think about it, you are only one person, so your level and wage will grow slower then the 20 or so merchants you visit that can also level up and charge you more, your landlord can increase their level and charge more and so on and so forth.
Hey there WTF! I will begin by saying WOW. I am very impressed with the insights you discovered, especially regarding Flos and The Blighted King. I 100% agree with you about the latter, though I will say Flos is beginning to grow on me personally. When it comes to their downfalls, whether they have them or not, your guess is better than mine at this point! In regards to leveling, I agree it is not a just system to have, though I will admit they are working with what they got. In regards to your example about the merchant charging more, yes, that is pretty messed up he can do that because of his level. However, another merchant with one equal to the first may have skills in procuring goods that are hard to find. This might not balance out the injustice, though it does help to... level it (I regret nothing). Finally, I am actually happy that Ryoka refuses to level up. I goes to show that Pirate has an alternative path to powers since she worked with her Fairy friend to learn to wind run. I am curious to see how far Ryoka is able to go on her path! All in all, I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts. hope to see you around these parts again!
Hey there Shemia! it is a web serial so I have dropped the link to where you can begin reading it for free below. (If you are not one to click on links from strangers, feel free to google and find the website. There will be a table of contents tab where you can go to chapter 1.) It is posted there for free! wanderinginn.com/2017/03/03/rw1-00/
Just found your channel while looking for someone on RUclips to tell me more about The Wandering Inn. Keep up the good videos! Just subscribed 👍 P.S. I predict your channel is going to blow up
I really appreciate that David! I will be sure to keep uploading even if it does not blow up. I am really enjoying making these videos and connecting with fellow book lovers!
They were terrible. Parsneau dragged the lizard and bug speak out, I could only get through the first book by putting in x2 speed. I returned the book too. Garbage.
I see your point. Maybe I am just looking more favorably at my earlier 20's. Lord know I was idealistic. So I will try my best to give her the benefit of the doubt.
HAHA well it appears you are more devoted to TWI than me! Though I did eat my words in my latest TWI video 'Ryoka's Back' when I decided to actually give the Flos section a shot and very much enjoyed it!
@@FantasyInk i myself prefer the Erin chapters but every arc has its value for me. since i am pretty much up-to-date on the webpage i can say that the writting (atleast for me) just keeps getting stronger. That in itself is hugely impressive when you consider the scope of the work.
The innervoice of the main character is so childish and uneducated. i just couldnt get through the first part. Does it get better should i give it another chance? everybody seems so excited about this.
Hey H4nk. I can understand where you are coming from. Erin is not a character for everyone, and has rubbed me he wrong way on a few occasions, though in my opinion, she grows on you much more the further you get into the series!
I really don’t get why people like this book? I got to about chapter 15 and returned the book. It was that awful! Have peoples standards of good fantasy books dropped or what? Erin the main character is truly and bloody annoying. This could have been good but it’s just so badly written. I just couldn’t take anymore.
Not every book is for every person, so it is a shame you did not like this one, but completely okay! I admire how far you got into it even if it wasn't your cup of tea.
I got the book on audible. And I made it about 26 hours into the "book" I was really hoping the misandry would leave or that the characters would grow out of their hatred of men. However, as the book progressed I came to realize that it wasn't only the characters that hated men, but the author as well. And as I stated in my review. I've read anti-woman pamphlets that had treated women better than this "book" treats its men. 0/10 Abysmal book. Would not recommend.
I only read the first book, but it was so incredible average. Bluntly written, meandering with only a handful of interesting scenes and ideas and mostly devoid of deep or interesting characters. I have been told it gets so much better, but I have read so many better books in the genre and have so many books before me that I do not see myself getting back to it.
Hey there Namorat! I can understand the mindset. I have friends IRL who I tell them not to read this series. Though I really enjoy the slice of life genre, it definitely is not for everybody. Though I do agree that the series does greatly improve over the books/ years.
@@FantasyInk I do love a good slice of life story. My favourite finished series, Super Powereds has some of it and my favourite unfinished series, Beware of Chicken, has lots of chapters that are nothing but SoL :D But as always, not every book is for everyone, even if the ingredients are perfect in theory. As a former bookseller, I had to learn this fact quite quickly ^^ Anyway, keep up the good work :)
