    You guys are getting way better at talking in front of a camera. Much more natural. Keep it up! You guys have one of the only channels specific to actual HEMA that updates frequently and gives good information. I love it.

    I wish links had been included. Of course we can google, but it can be helpful to have it in writing rather than trying to write it down quickly.

      We'll include some links in the next one. If you're having a hard time finding a specific piece I can help you out. :)

    This video has been incredibly helpful to me as I am just starting with a few friends and we are not terribly wealthy. I just ordered two synthetic trainers for drills and technique training. Next is the gear. Thank you!

    Anyway, if you are training for yourself or dont have anything of this nearby, you should get LARP/Soft combat gear. It does hurt but it is safe enough to do kind of intense sparring without any type of protection.
    The most basic thing you can get is a buffer made out of a water PVC tube wrapped with a pool noodle (Make sure the tube's wall is thin enough so it flexes. Flexibility helps to cushion hits. A non thin pvc wall works but it hits harder)
    There I just cheapened all your costs if you dont have anything nearby and you can do it with friends too
    (It is still highly reccomended to hit with moderate force and avoid hitting dangerous spots such as the back of the head and the spine)

    Here is my list of gear that I'd love to see getting reviews of:
    -the Black Armory jacket with its fancy collar
    -the new Leon Paul gorget
    -the synthetic rapier by Blackfencer
    -the Thokk gloves when they get released
    -same for the progauntlet
    -spearheads, like do you any good spearhead that you would recommend?
    -plastrons
    I think that's all the gear I'm curious about.

    I'm brand new to HEMA. LongSword and Rapier/Dagger are so far my favorites that I plan to get into. Is the light kit good for Rapier/Dagger and if using a synthetic LongSword for sparring why isn't the light kit sufficient protection. I realize heavy stuff is needed for steel weapons of any kind that's obvious. Thanks so much B&I the video are fantastic for us newbies.

    The reenactment society I'm currently fighting with use dubious protection at best. With an sallet and a pair of leather gloves and some safety glasses being the most common thing to wear for longsword it gets pretty painful at times.

    NuttyBuddy for the win!
    Darn thing has taken shots I won't go into detail for but straight thrusts, flat across the waist and a blow like a punter kick and I only had injured pride. Also I have to give it an comfort level beyond all other cups. I've put it in at home before driving to practice and not remembered to take it out till I was back home. That's just crazy comfortable

    Have you guys tried motorcross chest protectors? Too light? Not enough coverage?

    • @janejohnston3482
      @janejohnston3482 7 лет назад

      For light weapon sparring we don't find them necessary. We recommend that women wear hard chest protection because of breast tissue, and we typically prefer them to be made specifically for chest size (makes fit and comfort better). I've never tried motocross chest protectors because I find the options available in HEMA specific gear to be sufficient.

    • @50StichesSteel
      @50StichesSteel 7 лет назад

      Jane Johnston Right on..I was thinking maybe a cheaper alternative but Im not familar with the prices of the female custom pieces...They do make chest protectors with cup sizes to them as well..Thanks for the response

    Hey! great video! I have a question though: some friends were arguing that you could break a rib with my Blackfencer longsword or sabre (without a fencing jacket) I feel a little skeptical about that. What do you (pretty experienced people in the domain) think about it?

    • @janejohnston3482
      @janejohnston3482 7 лет назад +2

      Lockwoods Yes, you can break a rib with a synthetic sword - single or two handed. If you're actually sparring with intensity and using proper cutting and body mechanics (see some of our sparring videos for what that looks like), you can certainly break bones. It's also possible to have a rib broken through a jacket, as we found out when it happened to one of our competition team members who was sparring steel longsword.

    • @Jer20001
      @Jer20001 7 лет назад +1

      Damn okay. Thanks for the info! And with a fencing jacket is there still a chance or does it provide enough protection?

    • @janejohnston3482
      @janejohnston3482 7 лет назад

      I edited my above comment to include that one of our people had broken a rib through the jacket. That was with steel and quite a rare occurrence, but I would say it isn't impossible to do the same with synthetic - again, if you're sparring with good mechanics and intensity. It also depends on your build, for example somebody like me would be more likely to have that happen than somebody like Lee who has considerably more mass and muscle protecting his bones.

    • @Jer20001
      @Jer20001 7 лет назад +1

      That must have been a pretty intense competition... Thanks a lot for answering my questions! Best of luck with your sparring and the channel! I'll be waiting for the next week/video :)

    Any recommendations for a mask that can be worn over glasses?

    • @janejohnston3482
      @janejohnston3482 7 лет назад +1

      It kind of depends on your frames more than the mask. There is some shimmying and a special way to put your mask on to have it fit over glasses without displacing them, but it's possible and most of our people who wear glasses do so under most masks with no problems.
