    AND THE VIDEO IS BACK.
    turns out that when I was rechecking my notes I was doing the VRM calculations with 1V output but using the 1.2V performance curves which lead to me thinking the notes are wrong. The notes were actually mostly fine.
    I say mostly fine because I did somehow miss the fact the ISL99390 is SPS + indcutor losses not just SPS losses(which makes sense as isolating the inductor losses is really difficult).
    first.

    So it looks like Gigabyte designed the VRM to just the right size, 200A@1.2V is 240W, basically a stock 12900k.
    The VRM is hitting peak efficiency.

    6:10 Basically, they got rid of the 'orange' (centre speaker or subwoofer), 'black' (rear speaker), and 'light blue' (line in or side speaker) jacks, keeping S/PDIF (sort of an optical line out), 'pink' (always mic in), and 'lime' (line out or front speaker). They've essentially realised before anyone else that nobody runs their 7.1 channel sound system off of a motherboard, and those that do use a computer as a home theatre PC with 7.1 probably use an audio receiver anyways, to connect consoles and what-have-you to their TV as well.

    • @joelimmanueloelsner9211
      @joelimmanueloelsner9211 2 года назад +1

      Buildzoid should make a poll which audio source people are actually using:
      Mice in (pink) & line out (green)
      Spdif (optical)
      Gpu HDMI /DP
      Bluetooth / WLAN
      USB
      5.1
      7.1

    • @tragicevans4157
      @tragicevans4157 2 года назад +1

      Most audio receivers specially 7.1 or 5.1 don't have full line out ie sub out, surround out. Most are powered line out. It's a headache if you have built in powered speakers and subwoofers.

    *S/PDIF* = Sony/Philips Digital Interface. It uses one or both of these connectors (on motherboards, usually Optical only). Usually there's only Out, sometimes both In & Out:
    * Optical (TOSLINK)
    * Coaxial (1 x RCA with an orange ring)
    S/PDIF was developed for CD-players, then utilized with DVD-players etc. That's where *~1.4 Mbps* maximum bandwidth comes. Which is enough for:
    * CD-Audio (PCM 2.0 16b/44.1kHz)
    * Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX
    * DTS 5.1, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24
    * MP3 etc.
    So, these are absolutely impossible via S/PDIF (DRM alone prevents it). Both of these can be found at least from Blu-ray movies (both 2K and 4K):
    * Dolby TrueHD
    * DTS-HD Master Audio

    You've got it EXACTLY right when it comes to "Dual BIOS" implementations! Gigabyte should do away with the single/dual switch on their "AORUS Master" boards and just have the BIOS 1/2 switch. If not, just stick to single BIOS. Having to cut power during boot 3-5 times in a row to get the "auto BIOS" system to switch is a royal P.I.T.A. (plus, there is usually NO on-board indicator for which BIOS you're on!)
    I'm also in total agreement about POST code displays. I absolutely love 'em, and have always bought the cheapest MoBo that has one on it. I've found that every manufacturer, by the time they include it, makes a high-quality VRM and memory buss, so if you've got a POST display, you've got a good MoBo.

    So, I just built my first computer. I used this board specifically [futureproofing aside] because of the type & number of USB ports as I have multiple controllers that are required in the creation process. As it's for my recording studio, the audio on the MB was of no consequence as no one in their right mind would use it in a pro setting. This review gives me more confidence in my choice.

    One way around the dualBIOS is to change the 2nd BIOS post boot image.
    The intel UHD770 iGPU can overclock +500MHz giving it a 2.1GHz clock rated at over 1TFlop of FP32. It helps with quicksync.

    The Digital SPDIF OUT, or the optical output you mention, is very important to me : Why ? Because its great at transferring home theatre quality5.1 surround sound, into your home AV home theatre reciever. I have a 75" monitor and a 3080Ti to run 4k @ 120Hz for MSFS 2020 for example. Works great :) And when I stream music or movies I get 5.1 via the PC hooked to the TV :D😊 OH and those red filters are great, the audio should be very very good here :)

      (Besides different heatsiinks) it seems like Ultra's PCB has 8 layers against Pro's 6, which is weird because otherwise they're completely the same. Maybe it's an error on GB website, because they also claim Pro to have ALC4080 and ALC1220 at the same time.

    Also this is the cheapest (almost) Z690 mobo with a temperature sensor header (which is very important for custom water cooling loops so you can control your radiator fans of off the coolant temperature). The cheaper is the Gigabyte Z690 AERO G, which seems to be basically the same mobo, but targeted at creators. It doesn't have the OC features like POST code.
    MSI's Z690 with the temp sensor header are only in the MEG (highest) line and the ASUS Z690 mobos seem to be very costly. Well, technically there's the ASUS PRIME Z690-A which is less than the Aorus Pro and it does have a temp sensor header, but it does not have the other OC features. It's $30 cheaper according to newegg, not much of a difference given what the Aorus Pro offers. Btw the ASUS TUF Z690 line does not have a temp sensor header. And no, I don't care about ASRock, didn't bother to look at their lineup.

    I have this board and absolutely love it. But I have a question/concern that I'm hoping somebody may have some insight on. I decided to replace the Intel ILM with the Thermalright contact frame, and it is actually working great. The first time around I didn't have enough contact with the pins, but I went back through the GN method on installation and it is great. Core-to-core deltas are down and I can run P95 at 5.4 (i5-12600k) and get down to 88C.
    The only thing is: I immediately started noticing coil whine coming from the VRM. I am 95% sure it was not audible before the ILM swap.
    One more detail: it completely goes away when I run a static voltage. I know that's because it's steady, and that is basically what should happen. But yeah. I know whine can be normal, but it's new to me and I am just a little concerned with the circumstances under which it started.
    Everything is running perfectly, VRM temps are great, benchmarks run great, etc..
    I opened a ticket with Gigabyte, just to get out in front of it just in case. I'm a tech professional myself, but only about 9 months getting deep into hardware.
    Any advice?

    The super super low end entry Gigabyte Z690 UD is apparently 60A * 16 and 6 layer. I kind of question why anyone would venture outside of the "entry" 200-300 range for gaming/light OC on a 12600/12700k. It seems like the VRM matters less this generation for these two CPUs? (Aurous PRO also seems to be barrier of entry for 12900k).
    I would argue the only benefit to a super premium board ($500 USD price range) is 8 layer integrity for memory OC and what not.
    Side note.. My X570 UNIFY VRM seems mediocre now by Z690 standards, but such is life.

      Not worth the effort, DDR5 is 2-4% faster than a good kit of DDR4 (see TPU comparison). You will never notice that, so it makes no sense to swap everything just for that minute difference. What's more, Raptor Lake (Alder Lake successor) is gonna come out in about a year, and it's gonna bring Z790, which will also have some boards with DDR4 support. So DDR4 ain't dead yet, it's actually still quite competitive as it's completely mature, they got everything out of that technology, while DDR5 is still in its infancy and too expensive (or sold out at the moment).

    I like this board, i may have to find out if my Noctua NH-D14 works with it, all tho i may have to wait for next gen Intel, i am worryed about power usage of their current lineup, and i kinda want an i5/I7 wiht a bit more pref but lower power draw if posible. Also my 8700k on my Gigabyte Z390 Auros elite, is still going strong in most games(cept bf2042). So getting it oced on my current board could prolong its life for a year or 2 more. But if i wanted the 12600k/12700k i would be shopping for this mobo, just based on your review. it ticks all the rigth boxes for me as well, all the the price is a bit steep in my country, to be fair it seems that all Z690 is heavy duty overpriced tho.

    • @Mike500
      @Mike500 2 года назад +2

      The Gaming X uses a PCP81530 PWM controller for 16x 60A DrMOS phases in "Twin VRM" design (teamed/parallel), as well as DrMOS on the VCCGT/VCCAUX. So they are not Smart Powerstages, but when looking at the competetive pricing of the Gaming X, it's actually in good shape. It undercuts the likes of the MSI Pro Z690-A and is actually a bit better feature-wise. So Gigabyte positioned their board models quite well.

    Now two years later and with the F28 bios, I am trying to get my 7200 memory kit to run at 7600 or 7800 even. So, I really don't need to get a Z790 to overclock my memory.
    And Gigabyte didn't believe in their own products and declared 6000 or 6200 ram to be the end of the line for this incredible board. The digital code display was actually my reason for getting it in the first place. It replaced my Z270 Gaming 7, which also has a LED debug screen on. I kinda don't want to buy a board without one. Once you have one, you cannot go back.

As well, for some strange reason, I thought that ASUS's "ProArt" board was going to be 4th of July or New Years Eve Celebration fire cracker, boy was I surprised when I started reading spec sheet.

    Before watching video - did you see DerBauer's video? He claims that Gigabyte said they overclocked 12900K to 8 GHz, but it seems CPU-Z validation was not done properly and was likely fake.
    I will now watch video.

      @@iceblade019 Yeah - read about the issue more after this comment (I commented just after seeing DerBauer video) - I've read what DOC TB wrote and it seems completely impossible to do an 8 GHz overclock. And given that it's not Hi Cookie's and Gigabyte's first time doing something shady, I won't believe them if they say that they just did it as a joke or that they had 1 in trillion super-silicon. I hate cheaters, even though I was only regular OC who sometimes dabbled in Water Cooling (which was considered XOC when I did it - God I'm so old).
      Thanks for your reply. I would write something about exploding, but I do have Gigabyte board - and frankly they have a lot of good ones. But their false advertising makes me consider my next mobo choice (I need a good X570 that will support Ryzen 2700 for the time being to be later switched to 5950X).

    Just grabbed this board, but the ULTRA version (vs "PRO"). Was $199.99 because of antonline (their own site, their amazon store, ebay store, etc.).
    Of course, I am coming from the future of 11/11/2022.

    • @xBINARYGODx
      @xBINARYGODx Год назад +1

      PS - it goes from 90A to 105A Power Stages, but I'm not sure what else is actually different about the Pro to Ultra 'upgrade' (original price jump was 330->370, so maybe that increase power is the only difference).

    • @xBINARYGODx
      @xBINARYGODx Год назад +1

      UPDATE - the Ultra also adds support for DTS:X Ultra (which the Pro doesn't have) and you go from DisplayPort 1.2 to 1.4 from pro to ultra.
      So.... DTS:X Ultra is added to the sound support and you upgrade to DS 1.4, and you go from 90 to 105 on the power stages.
