Excellent review, you obviously know a lot about PC tech. I just ordered this motherboard to go with the i7-13700KF I ordered also. Thanks for the in depth review. New subscriber here now.
GREAT REVIEW! It's good for rendering (2 GPUs) and animation storage (5 M.2s). My Asus ProArt is crapping out on me due to flittering TMP IN4 and IN6 going from 0 degrees to 250. So I am picking up this one ($251.00 which includes taxes) since I have no idea how long the Asus RMA will take and it sounds like they have a bad rep in that regards.
Current rumors saids next gen Intel(13th gen) should be LGA1700 compatible, so anything 1800 could be a comming Antusiast platform. Or cos it was designed before they knew much.
Do you still have this Board? I'm asking because it also has a Beta Bios with 0x129 MC. It would be interesting if it does the same ripple on windows startup like the pro Board did.
Five m.2 slots, plus 2 cards, eh. Great if your building a NAS around a 240watt CPU, I guess (X for doubt). would have been nicer for them lanes to go to card slots so any device could be used instead of only m.2 drives. looks like most are only gen3 PCIe as of now, however it looks like you can put 2 or 4 m.2 drives in a single card slot that is taken up by a single m.2 drive on the motherboard, so it's a bit wasteful to not just have the card slot there to begin with.
Thanks for the education. What would you think the minimum power requirements should be? So far all of the z690 boards look pretty nuts. Tempted to run the gigabyte auros pro, but saw a benchmark where it demonstrated a bit of additional memory latency. Don't know enough about the practical implications of that. Was like 74 ns vs 66ns on other boards. Anyone have any thoughts/ guidance here.
I am starting this video and going for cup of coffee. Please do not remove this video like last time cause my smartphone going lockscreen sometimes turns off RUclips so I have to search in YT history my last watching video
Seeing how he said there is no SLI support... Is there no NVLINK support even (Yes I know it is SLI)? I bought this board for perfect spacing reasons for dual GPU on my 3090....
Hey, a bit off topic here, but is there any chance you could provide links for the tools you use for soldering? I'm looking to get into modding and was curious about what stuff to get.
Splitting the CPU PCIe into x8/x8 is very important to me, and is a real point of frustration with the AMD platforms. Could a motherboard manufacturer implement Gen5x8 to the first slot, with an option for Gen4x8 to the second less expensively than this? [Are there cheaper switch chips that could be used for gen4?]
Question, is this bord a good option for a 13700k? It's cheap now at 320 euro here andere can't see something good for that price point in the z790 bords.
I was planning this board or asus strix z690-f... But in terms of durability and better temps. Which is better?? I read other websites msi Vrm is good but they have no good temps as asus model. Anyway i am a newbie. Hopefully u guys could advise me... Thanks...
i'm confused why does dual 16x slot requires switches? i could split the cpu 16x bandwidth into 8x + 4x4x on x470 without fancy circuitry on a €100 board. is it a cpu limitation?
Was hoping i could have the cmos battery in here i oc my ram and did everything but find the battrey to take out i have the same board can anyone please help me
Typically you don't get an 8 layer PCB unless the board has so many extra functions that they just don't fit onto a 6 layer. In this case that's probably the gen5 switches.
@@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking so if you were to make it 8 layers only for some crazy memory overclocking design the impact on the price tag would not be so insane?
This is the cheapest option for any content creators out there as well who have multiple GPUs. Most non-gaming GPU workloads are incredibly bandwidth heavy, so you absolutely want the PCIE16x8 speed you'd be getting on both those slots. The next step up in terms of features would be the Asus ProArt Z690-Creator, if you want thunderbolt ports, an extra 10Gbps port and a high-powered audio DAC. But you lose out on some power delivery phases and an M.2 slot.
Plz, plz plz, check lower end options. I need somthing similar to this, but with less powerfull Vrm(cheaper), and with a bit less NVME slots, and maybe without WiFI, but with DDR4 support and PCI-E 5.0 NVME slot if posible. Or same but with DDR5, but sub 275usd.
off topic but probable future content for you, Asrock is at it again with their 2 dimm slot fake aqua motherboard like with Z490 (you made a video about it) I haven't seen the retail MB I don't think they released pictures of it but I highly doubt a 1000+$ monoblock motherboard will only have 2 dimm slots
Im really disappointed there isnt a single Z690 board that can do 4 way crossfire/SLI. Theres more than enough lanes with cpu and chipset combined. They could just make a board with two x16 electrically x8 slots from the cpu and two more from the chipset. Since the link from cpu to chipset is now pcie 4.0 x8 and almost all 4 way cards are pcie 3.0 there wouldnt be a bottleneck.
How are you surprised? Almost no one uses SLI/Xfire on a modern systems so that specific board wouldnt sell and im pretty sure sli license isnt free. Also wouldnt running SLI on chipset bandwidth indroduce issues with nvidia drivers?
Me: buys a 30 port USB hub
Buildzoid: could use a few more USB ports
I don't want any more stuff sitting on my desk.
@@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking i find hubs amazing personally, but reasonably sized ones with 4 ports because it's just convenient to have them
Now you have 30 USB ports with max speed of one
cant wait until you do some mass Z690 review so you can tell us whats good and some ddr 5 content would be nice
WEEEEEEEEEEW!
I ordered the Force.
thanks for this boss man!
pretty much the same board

As always pleasure to watch.Do You know if this PCB is the same as z690 Force WiFi?
AFAIK it is
@@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking Thank You
The retention on the backside of the motherboard had interesting alphanumeric lettering. LGA17xx/LGA18xx
They already ready for 13th gen lga 1800 sockets with those covers etc.
Hmmmmm, 18xx, is that server maybe, they may have had to do that for the larger LGA socket. curious that.
Current rumors saids next gen Intel(13th gen) should be LGA1700 compatible, so anything 1800 could be a comming Antusiast platform. Or cos it was designed before they knew much.
Have you changed your mic or sound settings? Your voice sounds different compared to previous video
lol time to crack out the m2 to pcie x4 adapters. FWIW the pricing seems reasonable... just wish they were proper slots
Enjoyable content, as always. Maybe I'm not used to being part of the 360p gang, but your intro sounded more bass-y than usual. Not complaining 👌
In theory, you could use an iGPU and get 10 m.2 drives, no? I don't know why you'd buy this motherboard for that, but I guess it's also an option?
Z690 Carbon or Aorus Pro for i9 12900k ? Value and Performance
Do you still have this Board? I'm asking because it also has a Beta Bios with 0x129 MC. It would be interesting if it does the same ripple on windows startup like the pro Board did.
I'm surprised there is no ddr5 overclocking video up yet haha
At 4:02, the bottom PCIe slot is PCIe 3.0 x4, not PCIe 4.0 x4

Min power requirements for 12900k*
OK I was going to buy this and realized I dint need all that expansion lol! What do you recommend instead?
edge
I plugged both CPU 8 pins on mine. Since I upgraded my 12700K to a 13700K, it still does not matter, but it will not hurt either.
Are you aware of any Z690 motherboard that uses DDR4 and T topology? Awesome PCB videos by the way.
Nothing modern uses ttop anymore, modern daisy is better then ttop ever was for 4 dimms

you should probably check the spec sheet before buying. it supports crossfire, but not sli/nvlink
Hey, a bit off topic here, but is there any chance you could provide links for the tools you use for soldering? I'm looking to get into modding and was curious about what stuff to get.
I would say it’s best to get them from dedicated repair channels as they have their pro and budget versions of the tools.
Looking forward to the Tomahawk :)
Bought this MOBO. This will work for overclocking with 3070ti OC I just bought?
LGA 1700 CPU from Gigabyte is problematic in MSI motherboard??
Splitting the CPU PCIe into x8/x8 is very important to me, and is a real point of frustration with the AMD platforms. Could a motherboard manufacturer implement Gen5x8 to the first slot, with an option for Gen4x8 to the second less expensively than this? [Are there cheaper switch chips that could be used for gen4?]
That is just what the asus b550e does?
@buildzoid Would you please ask MSI what their " Tuning Controller" looks like, JDASH1 connector on the motherboard? Can't find any information on it.
Question, is this bord a good option for a 13700k?
It's cheap now at 320 euro here andere can't see something good for that price point in the z790 bords.
Yes it is. I bought a new one from ebay for 245 with tax and shipping for my 13700k
I've got my own Intel WiFI6 card, would MSI be providing WiFI slot with socket on non-WiFi varient boards?
3rd slot is a pcie x4 gen 3 not 4.
So this board will support a gpu and still be able to put 3 or 4 nvme 4.0s on it without cutting the gpu to 8x?
I was planning this board or asus strix z690-f...

I read other websites msi Vrm is good but they have no good temps as asus model.

what did you end up buying?
Are you going to do overview of all partners MB models, like you did last years ?
Is this T-Topology or daisy chain?

Carbon or Aorus Master? They are at the same price in my country.
Carbon
Are Carbon and Force the same board with different colors, or is the Carbon superior?
no, carbon is SLIGHTLY better.
Guys should I get this one or add a bit more money and get aourus master buildzoid mentions?
Get the the Pro that he did a vid on a couple days ago
Is this board same as the force? Just that the force got no RGB
yup it's the same as a force
TLDR? good?
Was hoping i could have the cmos battery in here i oc my ram and did everything but find the battrey to take out i have the same board can anyone please help me
everyone who benches MSI has the MSI TPM breakout with buttons AND postcode display.
You are the best thanks
I kinda like the ruff top pcb layer
What makes a 8 layer board cost so much more than 6 layers?

The Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X at around $200 looks very good with a 16 phase VRM, decent cooling but no Wifi...
does anyone do none sli ..meaning one card for normal graphics 2nd card for physics?
BTW, Having it sitting on a Gigabyte MB box is pretty funny.

goddamn YT deleted my comment, either way I wanna see asrock getting roasted AGAIN by BZ :^)
I am so early that RUclips have only 144p and 360p version available for now...
Well after a hour still same
Do you reckon the 16 phase 60 A power stage VRM of the Gaming X would handle a 12900K fine?
Yes
