Trucking companies tell you that having a bad relationship with someone at home can be an emotional driving distraction. The driver facing cameras are like having a bad distance relationship with someone who is judging your every move for reasons to fire you and is a complete driving distraction.

CRST just started putting driver facing cameras in their trucks. We were told that the cameras would only record us in the case of an “event”. I thought an “event” would be an accident or hard breaking incident or what not.
    Wrong.
It tracks eye movement, body movement, and reports to corporate any time you are doing anything except looking straight ahead and driving.
I just gave them notice that our working relationship is soon coming to an end. I will not be micromanaged like that. Been in the industry for over 20 years. Way too many employment options out there for me to deal with that.

You know how they get away with this? Because the drivers let them get away with it. • @TheJoyofTrucking
      @TheJoyofTrucking  2 года назад +3

Yes, forward facing cameras are a very good safety measure. As for inward facing, Crete decides on the time frame of putting them in trucks, depending on a new driver's level of experience and driving record. A driver can always choose to not work for them if that is a deal breaker. But we decided it was worth having it up for two months in exchange for all the benefits reaped by working for Crete. So far we are very happy, as Kevin's income has gone up by 50%.

First off, I am not a professional truck driver. I did however work in the trucking industry for several years, got to know many of the titans who built up these trucking companies into large fleets who started with one truck. I have a great respect for everyone that can amazingly navigate these big rigs across our highways safely year after year. I haven't seen comments to this point but I think it's worth mentioning: Inward facing cameras I feel could be just as much a distraction for a driver who feels they are being surveilled all the tiime. In our neighborhood we have lots of red light cameras and I see people doing stupid things so that they don't make the cameras flash and record a violation. I also think that computers and cameras and recording data creates a situation where, as many have mentioned here, the companies feel they have to CYA every possible risk (where often unexpected things happen but nothing bad results from it) and drivers have to now be superhuman perfect without one screw-up to mar their driving record. Just way too much scrutiny. You cannot have a world of perfection and zero mistakes. Just my two cents, good buddies. Keep on trucking!

If the camera was just for traffic incidents they wouldn't have it on a 60 day timer. That doesn't make sense. It's clearly being used as a monitoring device to check new driver activity.
No problems with a dash cam, but if I'm going to be living in my truck for weeks and months on end, you're not putting a camera facing me 24/7. That's a bridge too far. Truckers already deal with enough bullshit without being recorded 24/7. We're employees, not inmates.
Furthermore the only purpose of a driver facing camera is to condemn you. Unlike a dash cam it will never absolve you of anything, it can only be used to incriminate.

  • @cotjocky466

Cameras can save you in court if you are not at fault. They are damning if you are “possibly” at fault and that 15-20 second blip doesn’t always show the whole picture. And at some trucking companies they are a very good harassment tool for ever single minor infraction. I understand a company wanting a forward facing camera to cover themselves in a lawsuit, but most drivers with any experience, especially those that drove for many years with no one arm chair quarterbacking their driving abilities through cameras will tolerate camera harassment. They’ll straight up go somewhere else. I would say company harassment about how you drive and going home when they want to is the number one reason drivers look to lease or be an O/O. Most don’t want to become a big carrier with other drivers. They just want to bring home decent money and be left alone.

The reality is, that a significant portion of accidents are caused due to the things I mentioned above and inward facing cameras will rat you out.
Outside of those facts, most large companies are using them to harass drivers attention and driving. No driver is 100% attentive at all times of every day and it’s annoying to be harassed about it. I never really had an issue until the update. We can no longer even take a drink of water without the system barking and telling the driver he is distracted. I can tell you 100% that SOME companies are monitoring your phone calls etc. via the cameras. I worked for a hot shot company that installed forward and rear facing cameras in every single truck that ran under their authority and we are all owner operators. All the dispatchers have access to them and the video pops up when they open your driver number on the board (at least it did where I was at). I saw a driver get called it once during the Covid panic over having his mask off when he left HIS truck. Most of these guys are in their personally owned pickups too and they forbid drivers from disconnecting them on off time or vacations. They are monitoring what and where drivers go on off time and abusing the cameras. I don't see how it is even legal but this is what happens when you allow everyone in the company access to watch the cameras.

When the truck is off for longer than 5 minutes, the camera is off as the green light is no longer illuminated. Just to make sure I cover it with electrical tape.
People who truly have issues with these cameras are usually the ones who are doing something that they aren’t supposed to be doing. If you spent millions of dollars on your equipment you’d want to make sure you aren’t spending more fixing it because someone isn’t respecting your equipment.

Yeah been driving 20 years this month. Been in crst day cab for the past 4. They put in cameras a few months ago. Like it's been said, that camera has the ability to report your every move. Take a hand off the steering wheel to grab something it reports you. It's constantly going off. It dings me for all kinds of things when I'm in facilities that are just normal daily occurences. Now safety has some discretion on what to give you points on. But yeah. Crst wants robots at the wheel. I just drive and if they don't want me they can fire me. But these cameras, the way they use them is crappy. I agree with if there's an incident or accident review the video. But they have multiple people that do not much else than judge me from 5 hours away.

Big and small companies have pros and cons. With smaller companies you also take risks. Finding the good one is definitely key! Managers or dispatchers that monitor these lytx cameras have a "live view" option . the camera itself records constantly but never uploads until there is an event , i.e going around a turn faster than 15 mph or hard braking. If you work for a company that uses lytx drive cam which is what this guy has , and they tell you they can not watch you while you drive , that is a straight up lie . Either be constantly monitored and recorded while at work for an OTR company , or switch to a daycab local service and just be monitored while you're in their truck. Most companies have both inward and outward facing cameras and the newest ones have AI which communicate with the PCM and hit the brakes if you get too close to a vehicle in front of you that's not maintaining the same speed as you are going. These are mostly by Samsara and are constantly rating your driving habits and reporting back to the company , which can be good or bad .

Maybe. We do think they are a good tool. Need to look into the cost and time line.

Hi there! Our email is in the description. Call Crete and ask for Cassidy. She’s great and honest! We think OTR 21 days out is now starting at 60cpm. But depends what account you’re interested in. They do vary. Good luck!

So after 60 days as a new recruit they will allow you remove the inward facing camera?

    • @TheJoyofTrucking

They actually decide on a case by case basis. Sine new drivers don’t get one at all. Seems to depend on your driving record. For Kevin it was 60 days and then it was removed, yes.

Have logs changed in the last 8 years? when I drove for them they just started E-logs and Jumped on it as quick as I could. But is it still 11 hours and you have to log the pretrip and gas still, or did they change things?

You guys are going to get so much extra money from the driver referrals you are going to get from this channel, it's genius man. Crete is about the best company you could hope to drive for.

Glad to hear you have a positive impression of Crete. So far we are amazed how many people have only good things to say about them. Yes. We like the fact that they have a referral bonus. A lot of people decided to drive for Werner because of our channel. We never got one penny for that. This time we are glad if we get a bonus as a result of someone going with Crete because of our channel. But most important is that we truly think it will be a good and rewarding move for a lot of drivers. We only ever recommend things that we believe in. And so far we are very happy with Crete and the 50% increase in Kevin's earnings! So we will definitely spread the word, just because we like helping people. And getting remuneration will certainly be welcomed, but is not the motivation. We like keeping our conscience and karma clean. :-))

If it’s not permanent and leads to great pay…worth it to us.
