They understand how bad this is for drivers. That’s why the whole push is a sales pitch. When is the last time they said they were doing something for the drivers and you got excited about it? Everything they do is for the in-house employees. You are expendable.
I don't care, I do love and enjoy my privacy, also making phone calls and talking out loud they will have your thoughts and business recorded. I do will not for a minute drive for a company who wants to put in cameras and audio in the truck I'm driving to watch me the whole time I'm in that truck. I'll just quit the job and move on to another company that do not have cameras, and once they get their cameras too, then I'll just find another line of work to do. I'm not just a trucker I'm also into building communications systems and tower climbing to install antennas and feedline. Minor computer programming and more. I believe that the camera deal is weak and will not fix issues with the industry at all, just make people want to quit and leave for another company. Prime is losing drivers like crazy I hear, and they have to deal with it, now I hear they have cheap $1.00 per mile loads and those who take it is stupid. Too many trucking companies are totally out of touch with life of others on the OTR. Back in the 1970s trucking was great, many who drove OTR made great money, bought homes and put their children to college. Now days trucking is just a big hassle, and you make closet to nothing in the end. I see so many trucking companies going out of business due to corruption and not paying their drivers their right amount of money and dispatch stealing driver's standby pay.
But see, what you are describing is what makes a free market great. When companies do something employees(drivers) don’t like, it pushes the ones that care or are passionate out of their comfort zone. They are free and motivated to look for a company that works for them by having what they are looking for. The best companies would be the ones afloat. Now, I understand that the system is not perfect and there is not true freedom because we are all dependent on income and are sometimes stuck. But that is not a result of the system. That is a result of not living below our means to be able to have flexibility when things like this happen. Learning other trades while on the road is also a thing to consider. Being a driver there is a lot of time to work on self improvement. A lot of people (myself included sometimes) don’t take advantage of that and back themselves to a corner. Then react out of desperation more than anything(myself included at some point). When it comes to the camera stuff. Prime has said no audio will be recorded. That can be taken with a grain of salt. Regardless, I will continue to operate the way I do🤷🏻♂️. I too enjoy my privacy and don’t like the camera stuff. But after waging pros and cons, It is still an option that works for me.
We would have to define Owner Operator first. If you run your truck under someone else’s authority (Prime), you are not really an owner operator. Because most people(myself included) run under Prime’s authority, we are subject to the rules(policies) they implement. But we are also free to disagree and go elsewhere
Driver facing cameras are the least of a drivers concerns right now considering that automation is in the process of rendering most drivers obsolete. The megas know that in this environment the drivers who don't have many options to make a living will put up with almost anything. Meanwhile folks loke like me who enjoy OTR have already quit or soon will because I'm not killing myself because the companies are operating at a loss. The company tried to tell me I have to accept certain conditions because of "the rates and the spot market." I told them that they are the ones who have to worry about rates and the spot market. When the rates were sky high and I drove 7 days a week for months on end for .50 cpm they didn't give extra money because of the rates - they kept it for themselves. So why would I do anything different because the company can't make money? Not my problem. I'd love to be in a truck right now and I have a spotless record and I almost always pickup and deliver on time. But since I will say "no" to certain conditions (no, I will not do short runs all over the NE in a reefer for .60 cpm and the rates and the spot market won't change my mind) they don't want me anymore.
They say no audio and it only going to show your drivers seat and nothing more. The rest will be blurred. The question I would have is how many chances drivers to be corrected before letting you go? They you can hold your drink other than alcohol and you can eat something. But that doesn’t make sense. Basically don’t have your phone in your hand while driving and keep your following distance from other vehicles. That what they are looking for
