  • With more roller coasters than any other on the planet, it's no wonder so many coaster enthusiasts have this park at the top of their bucket list! However coasters are not everything; other park aspects must be taken into account when reviewing a park, which is why in this park review I go into as much detail as possible about my Magic Mountain experience!

    Magic Mountain is my home park, so I'm naturally biased, but even with that, it's not my favorite park. However, if Magic Mountain had the same level of management that Cedar Fair parks have, it would probably be my #1.

      I hope not! I love Viper! Strangely enough, I keep hearing people say Viper hurts to ride, but I've never felt even remotely uncomfortable on it. It always seemed about as smooth as any other of their steel coasters. Maybe it depends on your body type or size or something.

    • @jritchi9445
      @jritchi9445 7 лет назад +13

      I'm a 5'6 170 pound man and I love that coaster lol. I have no problems with it and my head is right in between those "uncomfortable" restraints. They will only remove viper when the cost to maintain the ride exceeds the money it makes for the park.

    • @twistedcheese1
      @twistedcheese1 6 лет назад +2

      memelord cucumber viper is quite smooth

    • @mattglumactheautisticgolfe1608
      @mattglumactheautisticgolfe1608 6 лет назад +9

      Memelord, Viper never hurts me but if they give it new trains with just lap bars, have Vekoma retrack the inversions, and give the ride a new theme and name, than the ride could be much better, even though the Viper is my favorite Arrow looper. I've been on many Arrow loopers on top of that including the Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. What makes the Viper a very important ride is because its the last surviving 7 looper model from Arrow and it deserves a nice rehab or at least lap bar only trains.

  • @StamfordBridge
    @StamfordBridge 7 лет назад +67

    Magic Mountain actually used to have far better themimg in the 70s and 80s! Then they spent all their money on the coaster race, which I certainly appreciate (MM is a no-brainer destination because of the coaster lineup alone), and as a result the theming slowly disappeared; instead, like so many parks, they seemed to think that commercial/superhero tie-ins count as theming, whereas for me it's just empty commercialism. Also, MM has clearly cut back on the staffing over the years, and the amenities are terrible compared to many parks. Finally, despite the record number of coasters, on a bad day the lines can be so bad as to make a visit feel like a bad idea. So, in terms of management, it's a poor park. In terms of rides, it's possibly the best in the country.

  • @blushiiwaz

    Everything you said was so on point from the weird smell at new revolution to the ugly t shirts!!!! Lmao!!! I go there practically every weekend because I love so close by it so it's really nice to know the reputation my home park has! I do agree about the theming, it can use some work and the Johnny Rockets line!!!! MAN that is not worth it but oh well I go to ride the rides not to eat gourmet food and stuff. But the X2 lockers? It isn't mandatory you can just put your stuff on the side, at lease that's what I did and they didn't say anything. Great review !!!

The day I was there it was a bit quiet and I only stood in line for Tatsu and X2. Since I love roller coasters this was like heaven! I can't wait to visit again and ride Full Throttle and Twisted Colossus

    You say SFMM is bad at going between roller coasters? Hersheypark has you walk at least more than 5 minutes (maybe even 10) between Fahrenehit and Great Bear. About 40% of the walk is uphill.

    Taylor, is it possible you can update this review when you head to the park in 2018? Especially now they have added a nice dark ride, an upcoming flat ride, and many changes added to the park with the new president. Changes such as:
    -Refurbed Jet Stream
    -Upgraded Restrooms
    -Refurbed Games
    -New Parking Lot Entrance Signage
    -New Samurai Summit Signage
    -Upgraded Bumper Cars
    -Refurbed Scrambler
    -New Shaded Canopy for Check-in
    -New Solar Panel Shaded Parking
    -Remodeled Johnny Rockets
    -Water Fountains Replacement

  • @MichaelFreeman
    @MichaelFreeman 7 лет назад +6

    I totally agree with your review. Especially about the theming. That's my only real complaint about the park. Magic Mountain is my favorite park in CA, and I'll never pass up a chance to go ride some of the best coasters in existence, but its themed areas are hit-and-miss at best. And some rides are just out of place. This is mainly because it is an older park that was bought by Six Flags and still has many of its original un-themed areas mixing into its themed areas.
    And then there are just mis-placed rides. For example, Superman should be in the D.C. Universe/Metropolis area, not the asian-themed Samurai Summit.
    And it would be great if they did *something* with Gold Rusher. It's a nice older ride, but most of the ride is completely un-themed, with bare concrete block walls, views of the un-themed back sides of buildings, and rails and supports that desperately need repainting. And they need to do something about the spots where riders have developed dumb traditions of sticking wads of gum to a support beam on the first lift hill, or throwing old hats in a pile at the side of the track. It just looks dirty. If they ever did a theming overhaul, perhaps something similar to Disney's Big Thunder, with rock work, and maybe even tunnels/caves, and mining town building facades on the back sides of the unthemed buildings you pass during the ride, it would be a much nicer experience! Currently, the only thing loosely themed is its entrance building. And loosely is an understatement.

    Looking at the Magic Mountain vs Cedar Point thing. It’s funny how these places are such products of their location. Magic Mountain is QUINTESSENTIAL Southern California/Los Angeles...concrete, hills, costumed characters with mountains in the distance. Anybody who’s ever been to LA knows that this is, without a doubt, the essence of life there. I’m one of the few people who seem to actually *like* LA. It’s just such a sprawling, impressive, desert metropolis. Then you have Cedar Point...which is a complete microcosm of the upper Midwest. Fried food, views of the lake, funny “offbrand” style theming and long, open roads. It’s another one of my favorite parts of the country because it’s soooo different from where I live in the northeast. People just seem to be a little less bitter and (the funniest part to me) they LOVE their chain restaurants. Up in Boston, we always try to visit whatever hole in the wall place has incredible food made by people who speak exactly no English. I visit my cousins in St. Louis? “Let’s go to the Red Robin...or how about Chili’s....yeah, let’s do Chili’s tonight”. Really, there is no comparison between the two places. The only thing SoCal and Sandusky have in common is that they’re both in the contiguous US.

    I love the park. I live in Northern California about an hour from Discovery Kingdom, and I grew up going there. Last year was my first time at Magic Mountain and it was phenomenal. We got the Gold level Flash Pass and it was absolutely worth it. I noticed you mentioned you needed that extra day. With the pass, we did two full walk-throughs of the park and rode every open (non-kid) ride in May when it was fairly busy. The pass is well worth the money if you're going for a novelty visit rather than for those who live nearby. We're going back in two weeks and I'm stoked. All of the negative points you mentioned (except for aesthetic because that asphalt needs to be decorated) were not an issue. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn right down the road so it's just a short Lyft ride away, straight to the entrance. And we went to the Olive Garden that's like a mile away to carb-load the day before so food wasn't a necessity. I think the whole time we were there, I only purchased the drink cup, about 5 refills and an ICEE. My only tip is if you want a funnel cake, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE PARK IS ABOUT TO CLOSE. That line wraps around the whole "Main Street" area.

    Spot on with this review! I love this park, even with its flaws. The improvements that need to be made are the following:
    1. Fix/Replace Viper (Personally would prefer if they keep it, just fix the roughness)
    2. Improve Merchandise
    3. Cleaner Bathrooms
    4. Upgraded Park Entrance ( Love the entrance from the vehicle though, very iconic)
    5. Get the much-anticipated Giga Coaster (I suspect the park will get it in 2020, 20th coaster)
    6. Replace/Upgrade theming of the Cyclone Bay section of the park (It feels like a dead part of the park)
    7. Faster Operations
    8. Friendlier/More Experienced Employees
    Fortunately, the park is definitely going in the right direction thanks to the SFMM President, Bonnie Weber. This is reflected by the fact that attendance increased 7.3 % in 2016 and has been increasing over the last few years.
    I'm very pleased that instead of just focusing on adding roller coasters, they have systematically been improving other aspects of the park. Bonnie has stated that her vision is to improve one part of the park every year, along with adding a new attraction.
    The biggest and best news for 2017 was that beginning in 2018, SFMM will be open 365 days on par with the other world class theme parks in California. This means that instead of hiring seasonal employees in part time gigs (mostly teenagers), the park will be able to hire permanent, full-time staff that will increase the overall guest experience. It will fix problems 7 & 8 on my list.

      Gustavo Roman thankfully they already fixed the boardwalk area.
      I also agree with fixing up viper. Maybe a new paint job and hopefully some trains that are actually comfortable because that ride is fantastic!
      Cyclone bay is finally getting a re-theme and a new coaster so yay!!!!
      They need to update the restrooms at the front of the park they’re all bad and don’t have enough stalls.

    First trip ever was yesterday. Got 15 new credits all in one day. More than half their coasters were a walk on, including Twisted Colossus (so I took two rides), Riddler's Revenge, Apocalypse, Ninja, Viper, Batman, and even X2. Longest wait was for West Coast Racers - and that's understandable cuz it's new. So surprised how short the lines were. That is, until about 6pm. Park started to fill up for Fright Fest, and got super cold.

      I say definitely go towards the back first and use your flash pass on the rides in the front of the park. Go immediately towards Goliath, twisted colossus, west coaster racers, etc. They ones in the back usually get the most packed!

    Great review! Ive been going to Magic Mountain since '75 so i been through all the changes. I agree with you pretty much on everything you said, positive and negative. Screampunk Districts theming is the best in the park, I personally can not stand the DC Comics part of anything, especially in the naming of the rides.......before Six Flags acquired the park, they had their own character licensing, and the merchandise was AWESOME....back then..........now it sucks. You are dead on with the service for the food and places not being open. I will say this, since im an arizona resident, when i go to Magic Mountain i always get the platinum fast pass so i can get on everything in one day....and i always advise anyone to never ever EVER go to any amusement park on a Saturday......PERIOD! I am wondering what your thoughts are on that. But must say i do like your reviews....and this is coming from a 53 year old coaster junkie. so KUDOS and keep up the good work.

    I was there a couple weeks ago. I recommend a good 10 hours in the park if you’re a die hard coaster enthusiastic. You will need the time to do all the coasters without feeling rushed. There are about 17 there now. I felt really rushed with my 8 hours in the park and with all the long lines. I did most, but not all the coasters.

    I just went at the beginning of July. I went on a Monday and there were practically no lines, which was great. I was able to get all of the coaster credits in one day, except for Apocalypse and Green Lantern. Was bummed about Apocalypse being closed. Wonder if they're ever going to reopen the other one. Anyway, very glad that they pulled the VR off of Revolution. If you ask me, nothing of value was lost; it's still an excellent ride. So uh. Yes. Great park. Would go back in time to re-experience.

    I don't think I have ever been to a more disorganized park than magic mountain. They took ages to get rides out of the station and had a ridiculously high preference on the quick access pass. The food and water prices were a complete rip-off and the lines were infinite anyways.
    The few rides we got onto, since we waited almost 1-1.5 hours per ride, were still genius. Twisted Colossus especially was an incredible experience and also the only coaster with staff interested in getting people in and out quickly. Tatsu also was incredible, but had a lot of technical problems prolonging waiting times.
    To sum it up, regarding the rides this is one of the best parks I've ever been to. But everything surrounding then, at least that day, was pretty bad.

    Also if you're thinking about buying a pass, gather 3/4 friends around fright fest time to get the "buy a day get the year" but if you have 4+ people you automatically upgrade to a gold pass which gives you free parking, parking is $20. This why you're paying no additional fee for parking or a gold pass.

    Great review on Magic Mountain. I live in Southern California (but I grew up not far from Kennywood Park near Pittsburgh, PA back in the 1980's and 1990's) One of the motivations for me to move to California was simply to be closer to Magic Mountain because I love it so much. Your review made a lot of great points. Their merchandising is very poor. I remember Cedar Point had a T-shirt for nearly every rollercoaster they had,..including the older coasters that perhaps weren't as popular as the newer ones. A great improvement for Magic Mountain would be more variety of merchandise that is specific to their coasters. Most of what i see in their gift shop is all super hero DC comic characters. I also agree with the landscaping and appearance. Magic Mountain would do well to have a full time team of landscaping folks to groom and sculpt and plant more flowers. More water fountains and the sound of water all around would work psychologically on guests to get them thinking and feeling cooler on those scorching hot summer Valencia days! Great point about the long hike from the parking lot to the entrance. Granted the average American is overweight and doesnt exercise much,...and perhaps a good walk would do their bodies some good,.....I do agree that its still a rather long walk. The area that is now Hurricane Harbor (to the immediate LEFT of the front gate) used to be part of the parking lot back in the 1970's. The 1977 film Rollercoaster has proof of this....when Timothy Bottoms character who plays the young man bomber,..he leaves the park to go to his car and piece together another plastic explosive bomb,.....his car and that scene are shot in the original front parking area,...which was later the location of a large man made lake in the 1980's for water skiing stunt shows and fireworks. The lake was then scrapped for what is today the waterslide park "Hurricane Harbor". So at one time the main parking area was much closer to the front entrance,...and the movie Rollercoaster is the ONLY evidence of this. The angle in the scene shows the whole front of the park from Timothy Bottom's car,....and you can see ALL of Revolution (long before the trees grew around it) and even Valencia Falls are visible from the parking lot back in 1977.

      Ditch your family and I'll pick you up! It's a 50/50 I'll actually take. I could make you to MM or may just rob you and leave you in the mountains where you'll have to learn to survive in the wilderness, you'll learn to hunt but you'll also lose your mind and forget English, and when you've finally been found you'll have a difficult time returning to civilized society and eventually run away back into the wilderness where life is black and white game of eat or be eaten! So if you want to take those chances message me.
