The park really doesn't flow well and it has a strange layout. I grew up going to the Dells and Mount Olympus used to never be a thing and it's a mish mash of several separate parks all next to each other that were scooped up by Mount Olympus owners. I believe it was Big Chief Go-Kart 2 which had the coasters, Crazy Ludwig's Go-Karts, and Family Land Waterpark.

I grew up in Wisconsin and this brings back so much nostalgia. Went to the Dells every summer growing up. The vibe and layout of this park is really “Wisconsin Dells”, I don’t know how to explain what that means. It’s just old school, and this park used to be a place where you just walked in and paid per ride. Maybe 15 years ago or so they tried to make it an actual all included “theme park” and combined surrounding attractions. That’s why the layout is so random and feels odd. It’s such an old school touristy road side stop. But I love it.

Mt. Olympus has pretty much ruined Wisconsin Dells. They've monopolized the entire town by buying all the small hotels and painting them their signature blue. It all started when they bought Family Land, which was a nice little water park that I enjoyed as a kid. That is why there is no flow in the park because its very pieced together. Poorly, for that matter. Was fun to see a video from a local place though!

    • @erikaj4112

We used to go to the Dells all the time when the in-laws lived there. Then they moved and we hadn't been there in so long. We decided to make a weekend of it and relive the memories. That's when we drove thru town and saw everything bought up by the same company and painted blue. Felt like driving thru barracks with some entertainment squeezed in between. It was so disappointing.

As a local I totally agree. Mt Olympus wrecked the look and feel of the Dells, which says a lot considering the town is a tourist trap. In the Dells there used to be Family Land like you said. That is what is the "water park" today. The coaster and go cart section used to be Big Chief. Funny how when they were seperate parks with different owners they were both pretty awesome. As a townie we used to use local passes and go multiple times a season. If you go to the Dells spend your money on Noah's Ark.

I have been to this place countless times over my 56 years. Let me give you my take on this park.
    1) It is TACKY. Tacky, tacky, tacky. But WAIT! That's a good thing. This park ... in fact the entire tourist trap town of Wisconsin Dells ... is tacky. Think low-brow entertainment. Blue collar. Brown (farmer) collar! It makes NO apologies for this at all and SHOULDN'T. If you're a snob, you will hate this park and the rest of Wisconsin Dells. It is dirt beneath your feet. BUT if you're not a snob and can enjoy fun for just fun's sake and if you can laugh at tacky oddball stuff, this park and town is for you. And this is what I warn all my friends that I take there. Once you accept this, you can start to enjoy it. In fact, once you accept this, you will enjoy it even more.
    2) There was NO grand plan for this park or the rest of Wisconsin Dells. Want to experience how amusement parks once were. This is it. And note I said AMUSEMENT parks. Not theme parks. Theme parks was a Walt Disney creation. Wisconsin Dells outdates Disneyland by decades. Longer even. MUCH longer. The original attraction was literally the Dells. The rock formations along the Wisconsin River that people used to be paddled around to see. And thus where the town got its name. Oh, and note I used the word PADDLED. They started doing this sight-seeing before there were motorized boat engines. Yeah, this place is old. Walk down the main street and you'll see NO theming whatsoever. The next attraction can be anything under the sun and usually is. Welcome to a time before Disney.
    3) Mount Olympus grew by simply buying the attractions next to it. That is why there isn't even consistent theming within. In fact, during the last recession (2008), they went on a buying spree and bought every single motel along the strip they could get their hands onto and they got their hands onto a TON of motels. They ALL were once independently operated motels. Now they're all painted white and blue so you know they're part of the Olympus complex. Oh, and if you stay in them, you get FREE admittance into the park. Now think about that for a minute. Do the math. Take a WILD guess where the real money is in Olympus. Yup, the motel rooms. While the park was originally the money-maker for Olympus, now it is the motel rooms. Motels that everyone wants to stay at since if you do, you can literally just walk to the park without using your car. Trust me. During peak tourist season, you do NOT want to use your car in the Dells. Think LA traffic is bad? Come to the Dells during peak tourist season and try to get across town.
    4) And that is why selling wristbands and then checking for them isn't that big of a deal to Olympus! I mean they only cost you $10 a day to start with. Heck, you can go to practically ANYWHERE in the town of Wisconsin Dells and get a free coupon to get into Mount Olympus! Why? Again, the gate isn't where they make the big money. Motels are that. In fact, the gate isn't where they make their second biggest money. That's the concessions stand and their restaurants. They know once you walk in, you're in for the day and you WILL get thirsty and hungry over the course of that day. And here's where the place is even more cool....
    5) They really don't care if you bring in your own food and drink in your bags. Honestly, they don't. You see they know you won't be bringing in a microwave oven, freezer, or a cotton candy machine in your bags. They have those. They know YOUR kids will ABSOLUTELY want all the junk food they sell and not whatever you brought in your bags .... that is steadily getting warmer and warmer with each passing minute. And once you're in, they've got you and your wallet. Try. Seriously try to not give into your kids begging for an ice cream cone. But let us be honest. You're going to be the first one standing up and saying, "Hey, anyone want something from concessions stand?" In fact, your kids will probably initially say, "Nah!" and run off into the pool. You'll then buy them something anyway because you know they'll be thirsty and/or hungry when they come back out to rest and/or....
    6) The roller coasters, go-carts, and other rides are simply there to give you and your family something to do while not in the pool. Something else to do. Something to do until you want to get back into the pool. Next time you go there during peak season, notice how many people waiting to do the roller coasters, go-carts, etc. are wearing swimming suits. That's not a fashion statement. They're just livening up their day by doing the rides UNTIL they get overheated by the sun and then back into the pool they will run. And I do mean RUN. You'll probably never hear such loud thunder of flip-flops smacking feet and pavement as swimmers running back down the hill to the pools as you will at Olympus. Oh, and that's why the rides and parking are up on the hill. They want you to stay and making it easy to return to the pool is one of the ways they do that. In fact, you'll commonly hear your fellow park guests groan about leaving as it means walking up the hill (or back to their motel rooms) so the parents commonly say, "Okay, but after a bit. Let me rest up first." The kids will race back into the pool before you change your mind ... which you won't but they cannot take the chance that you might.
    7) Peak season is Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. All the rides and attractions are in full swing. The only ones closed are being hurriedly repaired to open as soon as possible. This is why the pool isn't heated. No one ... NO ONE wants the pool heated during this time. Everyone is going into the pool to cool off, not warm up. Even grandpa and grandma are wading up to their ankles in the pool to cool off. Summer in Wisconsin is HOT and HUMID. A cold pool is Heaven at this time.
    8) Wisconsin Dells is a MASSIVE employer in Wisconsin during the summer. This is where most of the college students make and save up money for the school year. This is why ALL colleges and universities in Wisconsin ALWAYS end BEFORE Memorial Day weekend and don't start until AFTER Labor Day weekend. You need to understand that tourism is HUGE in Wisconsin. Everyone ... EVERYONE in Chicago goes to Wisconsin for their summer vacation. Why? We're north of them and thus OBVIOUSLY cooler. In fact, during the peak tourist season, there will be more Illinois license plates on cars and trucks in the Dells than Wisconsin plates. Interstate 90 goes directly from Chicago to Wisconsin Dells. The only thing I'm amazed by is why hasn't the Wisconsin legislature raised the speed limit on I90 to 75 mph or even 80 mph to cut down the drive time for Chicagoans to make it even quicker to get to it and thus even more likely they will come.
    9) I could go on and on about Wisconsin Dells but I will end with what it is trying to become: INDOOR waterpark capital of the world. The Dells hired a marketing consultant on how to make the Dells even more popular and that is what he came up with. So during the off-peak season (after Labor Day weekend until before Memorial Day weekend), this is what Dells is trying to become and thus why Olympus has an indoor waterpark ... which commonly isn't open during the peak tourist season for this reason. Once Dells cools down during fall to spring, they are trying to be the weekend get-away for Chicagoans by having MASSIVE indoor waterparks for them to come to. This is something the Dells has been working on for well over couple decades and it is beginning to prosper.
Hmmmm. Maybe I should start up a RUclips channel devoted to the Dells. :-) LOL!

I was just at Mt. Olympus last Sunday so I will talk about my experience (also, it's been about 9 years since I was last there and it was a different experience in comparison).
My town was selling tickets for $5.75 so I bought a bunch for my friends and I to go there. We were charged $25 for parking and workers did check our bags when we went in.
We did not like how far away the bathrooms are from the entrance.
It was a busy and hot day so we had to wait in long lines...Hades took over an hour to get through. It took us over 3 hours to go on each of the rollercoasters once.
We knew that we did not want to buy their expensive food so we brought lunches with us and ate in the parking lot because they do not allow food or drinks to be brought in.
We ended up paying for lockers, which cost $12 per locker. It was expensive but we felt it was worth it to do that.
After lunch we went on Helios, a go kart track, and I was not a fan because it was a very bumpy track. Also, I felt like herded cattle in the line to get to the karts.
We finally got to the water stuff and we had a ton of fun. While Posidons Rage gets all the credit, one wave pool there that gets slept on is Tidal Wave. Tidal Wave is super fun because while it may not be as big as Posidons, you can float on a tube and enjoy the smaller, bouncier waves that last for at least 5 minutes. We loved this pool and created many funny memories there.
We also went on the lazy river, which was fun but very crowded and hard to get Tubes to float on.
The water play area was also fun but cold.
All the lines for the big water slide rides were long and would have taken hours for us to get through so we did not do them.
Overall, we had a good day and want to come back next summer. Except, next summer we want to stay a whole weekend and include a different park, probably Noah's ark. The Wilderness is super fun too. But I would not recommend the kalihari because when I went there it felt like a rip off and there were not many rides to go on.
    Thank you for reading!
    Signed, a true Wisconsinite

I think the concrete slab was one of the mounts for a slingshot ride. It was run by an outside contractor. The day after installing a new bunge band the band broke just as it was about to fire. The ride was shut down and ordered removed by management. It was gone and off property in less than a week.

I go there every year for the past 15 years. Here's what I've experienced.
    1. There was a go-kart called Medusa's drop which had a main element of a steep drop to drive down. The flaw: it was immediately followed by a tight turn. So one day it was raining pretty hard and as see the drop ahead there is a ton of go-karts all being rear ended, as one crashed into the turn. Some people got really hurt but I was lucky enough to be near the end of the pileup. I was on the last ride before they decided to remove it.
    2. On Pegasus I showed the ride op that my restraint was moving a lot. My restraint didn't lock and came up during the lift although I wasn't too worried because the ride is pretty tame. Rolled into the station with my restraint up and just gave the op a look, she just said 'oh sorry' and put some tape on the seat then kept on going like nothing happened.
    3. Got hit on a go-kart with the big spiral track, after nobody showed up after 3 dispatched because I was so high up and out of sight, I had to get out and push it free while trying not to get hit by other riders.
    4. Was there when the slingshot ride had two of it's cables snap.
    5. Had the chain lift snap two times riding Pegasus with my little brother
    6. Many times saw ride ops sitting on the rails of the high up stations.

I don’t understand how security isn’t present at this park. In this day and age that’s pretty absurd.
When I went a few years ago I was very underwhelmed with the overall experience. All of the guests were mean and I got yelled at by a guest when I questioned why him and his son ran out in front of me from a different gate to board the train on Pegasus, effectively cutting my spot in line. The ops did nothing about it, and this guy made me feel so shitty for questioning why he cut in front of me.
Get your credits, ride Hades a few times and get the hell out of there. Whoever is running Mt. Olympus really needs to refine their operations and management - absolutely awful.

I’ve been to Mt.Olympus dozens of times. Even my senior skip day we went there. Many times you can score tickets online for 5-20 bucks during the beginning or end of the season. Or you can score a really cheap room or cabin. I agree it’s so poorly run, but that’s kind of the excitement imo lol. My uncle worked there back in the 90s and he said costs were constantly cut, and it hasn’t gotten any better. For us local sconnies (wisconsinites) it’s usually just a place for cheap fun when you’re looking to get away for a day. I also grew up very close to six flags great America in gurnee and getting season passes every year I KNOW the stark difference between the two parks, but MTO will always have a special place in my heart. Oh and btw, that closed off pad was the slingshot I believe. There was a video that circulated online of the band snapping right before a couple people were launched. You’re right that safety definitely isn’t the number one priority lol

My shorts got caught on a nail and ripped a huge hole in the backside. At basically any other park, I would have been mortified and headed straight for the car. But at Mt. Olympus, I could help but feel like I fit right in, split shorts and all. That’s the best way for me to describe the overall vibe of the park. It’s like your uncle who fixes something by adding duct tape.

The signs at the time said that parking was $20, but there was nobody at the booths to collect the money, and no barriers, so I just went in and parked. I also didn't have to pay admission -- the staff member said a hotel guest had left behind their wristband because she couldn't use it, so she gave it to me. I was only there for a couple of hours, which was just long enough to ride each coaster once, because the ops were so poor, but considering I didn't pay anything, I can't really complain. I'd only go back if I were there on business again.

I just went to Mt.Olympus a few days ago as a quick few day trip, They do in fact not check for your bands at the front opening but each day I went they did have backpack checks. The random concrete path things that would just be randomly sat on the ground are now removed. Quite a lot of good valid points you make, everything near the start is cramped. Indoor water park was closed(I think that was due to corona). I never went onto the horse go cart track but my brother did and he did mention that the track was not exactly what he thought it was gonna be. The Hades 360 ride was cool, the only thing I really have against the roller coasters is the fact that when you ride the Pegasas while getting pulled up near the start its rough and feels slightly broken as the other ones have a more smoothly sailing feeling. Its not the best park but it aint the worst ive been to. (Edit: It was packed and the parking is only free due to corona)

I have fond memories of this place actually. First time I went there was over 10 years ago, before they even had a water park or their biggest coaster. It was super cheap to enter, and at the time it was basically just a go-kart park. You went just for the go-karts, and it was cheap enough that it was great. I went through the Trojan horse many times. People kept stopping in there, which was a collision hazard, which is why I bet they closed it. I remember when they raised the price of park admission, and that killed it for my family. Was not worth it anymore. It was shortly after they opened the water park.
A fun fact for you: the guy who owns this park basically owns all of Wisconsin Dells as well.

I love this! I mean, no way would I let my kid ride these rides. I never have been here per say, however growing up in the 80s and working at a major theme park in the 90s--I know you push the concept coasters are safe and you are right! However, there was a very real time within the past 40 years where theme parks--with maybe the exception of Disney, Universal and so on--had a very lackadaisy way going about things. In the 80s parents were told just to hold on to their kids if they were too small for a grown up coaster. We would literally shove exceptionally heavyset guests into restraints so they could ride, just warning them to hang on tight. Keep in mind, this is not stuff I am proud to say we did! At the time, as a teen, in reality we meant well and didn't feel like dealing with an irate guest. So we just worked with them. Theme parks just didn't function like they do today. They were safe overall--I mean, most of the time guest injuries or deaths were the result of their own negligence. Kids were rarely injured or worse because they were kept to kiddie rides. However, when you graduated to adult rides there was a thrill in the admittedly rare, but still very real danger of getting seriously injured or killed. I think things really changed after 9/11. Security became tighter. Bad habits in the past were starting to get noticed. Suddenly you, the attendant, could be liable for stuff, which meant you needed more rigorous training, which meant you couldn't hire bored teens who stood around flirting with guests--you had to hire teens who actually cared, which meant making the pay and perks a bit more worth it.
I am not joking both guests and workers would smoke in line, at the coaster train station, around the park, etc. Workers were not supposed to smoke. Most weren't even 18 at the time, the legal age to buy cigarettes back then. You were just told to put the cig out if so-and-so came by.
Thank you for posting this! This really does show how times have changed overall and for the better.

Orginally the park with the coasters and go karts was known as Big Cheifs Karts And Coaster, and the waterpark was known as Family Land. They were owned and operated separately. Big Chief actually had another park across town with way more kart tracks. Even ay the present day location, there was alot more karts tracks then what exist today. Once it was bought out and merged with the waterpark it has really started to go down hill. Its really a sad empty shell of what it used to be.

I have been here hundreds of times before. None of my experiences have been what he describes. There is always a bag check and if you precede before the park opens a gate and a person will tell u to go back. There's always a line so dead days don't exist.

This park made history for me: it was where I rode my first ever roller coaster, Pegasus! I also was convinced of riding Hades, but I was not brave enough to ride the bigger, better coasters out there. But don’t worry…I have since ridden Raven, which is much better than Pegasus.

The Hades 360 operators almost launched the train whilst my restraint wasn't locked in properly. It initially did lock, but then it unlocked itself just before send. I swear I was moments from death.

I went here twice. The first time (before hades 360) all of the main coasters were closed and the indoor theme park had the wild mouse which had some good airtime. Overall it was just a meh. The second time we did almost everything except for the main coasters because they were closed... they didn’t have the wild mouse so I only got to ride the kiddie coaster which I already had the credit from last time. So this is a bad theme park it’s just new maintenance and if I go this year hopefully everything will be open.

It’s a nice park for little kids. I have kids 3, 9, 12 and they all were able to have fun. The small size of the park let the kids be able to go on rides and I didn’t have to chase the bigger ones around. It also won’t break the bank so then you are able to visit multiple theme parks at low cost.

    • @Danrarbc
      @Danrarbc 4 года назад +2

It is impossible for the coasters to run two trains. The are zero block sections on them. 3 of the 4 woodies have manually triggered pneumatic brakes (Hades requires a computerized braking system in the station because the Timberliners MUST align with pins on the track to operate the restraints).

I can say I survived the wild mouse ride lol. I know its kind of a thing for wooden coasters but the way they swayed as they went around corners knowing the place was disconcerting to say the least. Also I feel like I remember looking at the coasters certifications and they were a few years behind but can't confirm

Watching this review three years later, I think this park with a different operator could prosper. This is park I feel like Funspot or Gene Staples could work wonders with. I figure Funspot probably has the better budgetary capabilities to expand it, but I think other operators could be solid as well. If Funspot got this place, it could be the next Funspot Atlanta success story if they could find a way to open another major coaster, or even just renovate it some. I’d personally like to see someone come in, and add some more stuff to that arcade building (particularly an indoor coaster like a SBF spinner, or an indoor shuttle launch coaster from like Zamperla or something. Outdoor park, be kinda cool to see a ground up RMC hybrid like Arie Force one if they have room to expand, or my other idea (enthusiasts may be triggered) they RMC Zeus, and turn it into an elite coaster to stand alongside Hades 360 and draw in more crowds. However, I know Zeus has its fans. Also would like to see a launch coaster from Vekoma, or something on the family side like a Family invert from Vekoma or B&M. This park has potential if a more corporate operator could get their hands on it.

It’s literally a water park stop complaining ya there are security things and stuff that makes no sense but who cares if the flow looks good or the lanes are slim and literally they would think you’d hold onto your phone and camera and won’t pull it out and people be stupid with it and maybe they wanna check the wheels before the next riders go so they check them and make sure they are safe cause I went there and the maintenance guy was there checking it out the whole time after each rides like why do you have to complain about all these things that make sense logically

Honestly the Dells as a whole is pretty much a sham: the only really good place to stay would be the wood lodge areas more west in the city. Mt Olympus the main tourist spot is really only good for the rides (I personally liked the coasters, especially Hades). Definitely recommend for the rides/water attractions but I'd say that everything else there is meant to drain your money.
Edit: Don't stay at Mt Olympus hotel it's garbage and has trash service by the way, you are better staying further from there as possible.

  • @ShadowL42

its a full day park IF the coasters and waterpark are both open. hit the coasters early, cool off in the waterpark, hit the carts in the afternoon, bring a lunch in a cooler to leave n the car.
If you just want the coaster credits, you can likely hit this park, and either Little Amerikka or Mall of America on the same day.
Mall of America on the same day

i agree, the paths are small, there is no point of 2 of the same swing ride, the food needs some upgrading, the shops are cool but the items are kind of pointless and they should space out the coasters just a bit

The wisconsin dells is a giant tourist trap. Its very fun to go to places like this but its also kinda dependant on when and where you go. If you go to the Dells stay at the Wilderness waterpark resort... Also, ITS NOT FREE PARKING AND THEY DO CHECK YOUR WRISTBAND IF YOU TRY TO ACCESS THE RESORT AREA, so tale advantage of the lackluster security but dont go too far. This is from a wisconsin resident also
