- Scott Walker’s ‘The Plague’ surely isn’t one to catch the pop - oriented listeners attention on the first go. Too strange for comfort, its dissonant string arrangement, the odd chord pattern, some quirky production tricks and the haunting lyrics put the listener in a somewhat uneasy position, only slightly eased by Scott Walker’s sonorous voice. But look behind the doom and gloom and you’ll catch a glimpse of the undeniable genius and craftsmanship of a performer and songwriter in full flight.
Written by Scott Walker and recorded in 1967, ‘The Plague’ was a non-album b-side for the single ‘Jackie’.
There are several cover versions of this odd and beautiful song out there (most notably Marc Almond’s 1986 version) and it seems each one tries to highlight a different aspect of the original, which is, of course, what a good interpretation should be aiming for.
So we decided to look for yet another angle.
Something fat, warm and fuzzy.
In addition to the usual suspects Aggi, the Captain, Pascal and me our guests include Brother Grimm and the Krause family (Axel, Silke and daughter Emmy), all on vocal duty.
Many thanks to the sound wizard, all performers and members of the camera and editing tribe, you did an outstanding job!
We all hope you like, what you see and hear!
Enjoy, like, subscribe and ring the bell!
