- Tribute to the 110th birthday of our Honorary Conductor: Günter Wand and the NDR Symphony Orchestra (today: NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra) open the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Lubeck Cathedral with Anton Bruckner's Ninth Symphony in 1988.

I was broke in those days, but if I had worked some crap job to save up enough to travel from Canada to Europe and pay to hear this performance, I would never have regretted the expense in time and money.
I am still amazed by the recent video release of Wand's Bruckner 8th at Lübeck and only dreamt of seeing the 9th someday...Thank you for uploading it, NDR. They have been one of my favorite Bruckner recordings.

We surely had to celebrate the 110th birthday of our Honorary Conductor in an appropriate manner! :)
The audience were speechless after the ending. I was so moved from listening this "dem Lieben Gott" conducted by one of my most beloved conductors Günter Wand under the shadow of the the Cross. I felt like i witnessed Wand was praying throughout the music especially at the end of Adagio, may be he was crying. SDG.

58:40 - 59:06 I think it's the most dramatic and dissonant chord of all Bruckner's symphonies.
It sounds like a cry of pain! Then...peace, silence, the starry sky, stillness, blissness. ✨

Oh, It's so beautiful. Hearing the recording alone is magnificent. But this comes closest to being present at the performance itself. So very beautiful. A spiritual experience. Bruckner is the composer of the future!

Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieses Schwanengesangs von Bruckner mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und vor allem brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der dritte (vermutlich nicht letze) Satz klingt besonders schön und echt tiefempfunden. Der erfahrene und unvergleichliche Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im relativ langsamen Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Zweifellos eine der besten Kombinationen des Dirigenten und des Orchesters!

The very opening of the first movement is magnificent! The timpani and trumpets perfectly together !!!!
Yes. The first 3:15 are unbelievable. It's a cornerstone driven into the ground like a meteorite, and the rest doesn't disappoint. This particular performance is especially outstanding.

Wand had a great feeling for Bruckner. On the slow side but never runs out of breath.
It's still one of the most moving finishes to any music. And i can imagine very difficult to play. But this orchestra is underrated i think. They make a great "Bruckner" sound. Very much enjoyed that....

My life changed since I started listening to Bruckner's symphonies. Seiji Ozawa's "saucy maid" got me through my mum's death. Thank you Bruckner and to the person who put you, and Herr Wand, in my path! I'd listened to some of the other Bruckners but not really listened...

Outstanding performance. Was it recorded for CD release? If not, is there another version by Wand that is close to being this good?
The original release was on RCA. But unlike the 8th from the same series, the engineering of this 9th was unfortunately screwed up und the church acustic is blurred and annoying.
It can be subjective but the live recording with the same Orchestra from his RCA NDR Bruckner series (3~9) is even slightly better and remains my reference recording together with Jochums Staatskapelle Dresden and Giulinis Wiener ones. So if you're looking for the ideal late Wand-Bruckner, get the Berliner 7, NDR-Luebecker 8 and NDR normal 9 and you'll be happy.
