I’ve always loved the theory that the one above all, the presence, and image comics version of god are the same being
The presence and toaa is two different beings after watching this video. The presence is just God of the DC multiverse while toaa is just the writers avatar. Toaa literally writes marvel stories. If anything I would say the overvoid and toaa are the same thing

Great vid. I'd honestly say the Presence was most consistent during Post Crisis with JMD and Alan Moore. Morrison spiralled it out of control with Final Crisis and DC just couldn't make up it's mind in the N52 and beyond.

I haven't read many comics that delve into this aspect of the universe, and I don't remember exactly where I first encountered the imagery of the hand of creation, but I've definitely interpreted it differently. I saw it as... well, as *my* hand. Or, I suppose, the hand of humanity as a whole. The hand of the writers and storytellers who create these worlds. Maybe this is an idea I got from somewhere else or maybe I came up with it myself. I'm not sure. But even hearing all this, I still like my version.

First time I saw the hand of creation it was in the justice league unlimited episode where Batman and GL chase Chronos to the beginning of time. It is all shown in the GL animated series where Aya tried to recreate reality.
My first time seeing the hand is in the Crisis on Infinite Earths series. What an amazing series, I HIGHLY recommend reading it!!
Your version is the right one because I remember hearing about it too. It also makes all of us who make comics, write fanfic, make animated films or live action films the actual gods of dc. We are The Source.

It's like every decade a new layer of convoluted lore expansion gets added to the cake that is DC comics shared universe. I commend any writer that even attempts the challenge of making everything try to work together as a cohesive whole. After Death Metal I just picked DC creation stories I liked best for my own simplified headcanon. A lot easier that way.

I remember when people would day "But how powerful are The Endless. Are the Multiversal-level? Universal-level" and I always found that baffling. That's like asking "How much can Buddha deadlift" or "Can Rama Krishna beat you in arm wrestling". So to is it with, for all intents and purposes, the Abrahamic God in DC.

I love how that Drake in this video basically became like any philosopher in history trying to explain God and at the end he doesn't have a clear answer. For me The Presence is all of them and nobody of them at the same time, it doesn't need to make senso to us cause he is God , it works with different rules that beings different to him can't simply comprehend

Holy sh*t. I've been a casual DC fan for decades and Lucifer is maybe my favorite comic series ever. I have always wondered what was up with God's portrayal as an old English dude. This video not only answered that question, but also connected a lot of dots for me about the DC universe in general. This video was a thread that tied a lot together for me. Great job.
Videos like this make me so glad to be as deep in comics as I am, every strange detail or nonsense event is just another delicious flavor in the cocktail of madness! I'm always down for more videos in this vein
Gotta love how in a universe where some of the most horrific & powerful beings can exist and They make the most scary presence as a regular guy with a bowling hat kinda makes its hilarious like the most mundane things in RL are the most scary ones not something superpowered or cosmic.
Father Time & Mother Night (the parents of the Endless) have always confused me. they seem to be situated below the Presence in the cosmic hierarchy, but I don't think it's ever been explained how they relate to everything. My personal headcanon is that they are aspects of reality that took shape when the multiverse was created, and their children were born simultaneously with the first sentient beings

Maybe she's really just dark space. Similar to marvel infinity and eternity
Mother Night and Father Time are both of them boundless and independant to The Presence. Father Time incarnates the possibility of everything and encompass every moment there is, he is not limited to the know stages of time that are past, present and future, since in his realm things like cause and effect are disconnected completely, but If happens something he is there. He is every event there is in everywhere, is stated that he also allows every creation there is to be possible, like the creation of The Presence and others that are outside of his reach, like the creation of Slik Man that was never made and existed before The Presence, or the creation of Lucifer that he made when he escaped from the plan of his father. His reach even encompass The Void, as is shown in Overture when Desire notices him when he travelled with Dream outside of creation, he states that Time was watching all of them from the "moments" in The Void and later he manifested himself in it when Dream returned the saeculum to him. The Endless are also mentioned according to Dream to be in The Void before the creations were a thing, so the first stage of Father Time was The Void (in Books of Magic the author also described The Void as Time before there was change), since The Void is an emptiess pf nothing (Father Time is not not quantifiable or meassurable, he is possibility) but where things can happen there and things can be created or destroyed since Father Time is present; Dream also stated that nothing can be offered to his father since he already has everything that it was, can be our could be since all of the things happens inside him.
Mother Night is the absence of everything, she is an allegory of the non-existence, as is stated she is not a place and is her within non-space and non-time, nothing can happen there, there is no light, no though, not life, not concept of power or anything like it, not a presence, not events or possibilites at all, is also almost of impossible to reunite with Night since she was never part of the beginning of all things because she is herself by being nothing, the concept of "before" was not a thing and there was not yet the first thing or being and only would also be after the last thing stop existing. Only The Endless can visit her personification by coming back to their own origins since The Endless came to be as existencial conditions at the start of everything (When Dream tried to reunite with her he was literally being disolved in a frame of comic by the solitude since he was the only thing existing), and as Overture shows, if everything ends, her being that embodies everything that cannot be and would not be (paradoxical but true) is even going to claim The Void, since nothing more can happen. The only reason of why she is even a character is thanks of her being self-aware of her substance (lack of everything) thanks of all the things that The Endless incarnates that allows her to be a being, otherwise none would notice her since her true being cannot be shown, is nothing, Neil Gaiman made sure of that and avoid making some failure concept of nothingless like we have in other verses, If you remove the white page, she is that, or would be more accurately to say that she is not, that absolute isn't beyond the end where there are no mores afters.

@@Watch-0w1 Basically, they are not aligned with none and nowhere for avoid putting them in some power-scaling or being attached to certain actions and beings regardless of how supreme. They are a more primal, deeper and better written versions of the concepts for justify things like for example, a character like The Beyonder that leaves the multiverse and then claims to be boundless and reaching a place outside space and time where there is nothing, but yet still somehows things are still happening on panel even with his own mighty presence all with comic logic, you have there Father Time.

Can you make a video on the in universe creation story? It was set up that the infinite multiverse was destroyed, then the new 52, but Prime was split into 3 by Pandora, creating the Old 52, until the Flash recombined them by accident during Flashpoint. That's just ignoring Manhattan's temporal manipulations.

Does Shazam ultimately get his wisdom from the Presence? Billy Batson --> Shazam --> Wisdom of Solomon --> King Solomom --> God == The Presence. Also, now that the wizard Shazam has changed to Mamarangan: The Thunder God of the Dreamtime there a few links to the Presence or at least that area of the DC universe.

It was an amazing video, and you’re right about it. The DC cosmology/philosophy is so perfect because it is like any other philosophy/theology: you can talk about it endlessly, each and every one can have their own interpretation and it has some amazing philosophical ideas.
I love a lot about DC’s stories and the cosmology concepts are some of my favourites.
A video on the Great Darkness would be great, specially since there's now some confusing lore about it being connected to Lucifer.

I've always found the DC cosmology and over-lore to be fascinating and intriguing. It has enough to sink your teeth into, but leaves enough out to be mysterious.
I'm a Christian, so here's how my head canon for all this goes. In Transformers there it the TF Multiverse, in it are Universal Clusters, universes with great similarities. They make it that beings with the right capabilities can travel to other universe, but there is OUR universe, referred to as Quadwall, a play on Fourth Wall, it's dimensional barriers are impossible to break through for travel or to interact with. SO with this I figured that God or whatever religion or origin you beleive in created our universe, history plays out how you personally believe it did, a creation myth or evolution theory, from here the Omniverse forms from all potential thoughts life could have, all variations, within the Omniverse Multiverse form, often formed by aspects of life becoming cosmic entities, like in Transformers it would be Primus and Unicron, or gods in other multiverses, they form as creation- destruction, good-evil, life-death, light-dark, are conflicting forces, always at odds. Thus these "Hands" as you might call them then shape the Multiverses as they see fit, thus to me anything and everything we can come up with are canon, just often to their own universes. But with our universe being the source of it all we have an ability to spontaneously have glimpses of these universes and capture them as stories in any form. Thus all these Multiverse creation stories we see in this video can fit, I see the Presence as God himself, or at least the creator of everything, he could manipulate the Omniverse further if he wanted, but rarely does, and that handing off his power to his granddaughter thing, she is simply another cosmic being he created and he was simply passing his influence of that Multiverse to her. I see God as a being who influences our universe, but only where needed, thus why we rarely see miracles today as often as they happened on the past. He wants us to have faith in him, and with hw easy it would be to capture these miracles, he does them more subtly. To me God in these other universe just leaves it to other Cosmic Entities to handle.
I've just realized that the Presence dressed as a detective because DC means Detective Comics.

I just go by Presense being the “physical” conscious of the greater omniverse Overmind. Him leaving was more him just returning and becoming one again until he is needed source and all.

Not really, DC itself has already confirmed that these other multiverses in the omniverse belong to the Source, which is another aspect of the Presence, the old man we see is just a manifestation of the Source/Presence/God, as well as other entities like the Great Darkness, they are all just aspects of the same being, the overvoid itself is just one aspect of the Presence according to some DC writers.

What if God's various aspects are just anthropomorphic representations of a portion of his being. God made us in his image as such we have hands, a head, a mind, and a soul.
As a higher dimensional being his body" is of a different sort. What if the Source, is that higher dimensional bubble that contains the entirety of his anthropomorphic being, but also all abstract concepts that form the basis of the universe.
He has a mind which is "The Voice"
He has a soul which is "The Presence"
He has hands to create, which are Perpetua and their species.
He has an infinite imagination and stage to create which is "The Overvoid"
He has a will, which is his angels

I'd actually really like a Cosmology Series. It's a depth that hardly gets explored on RUclips with a careful eye.
The beauty of comics is that it's basically a battle to establish something as canon. Usually nothing happens until someone takes a big risk. So it's confusing until one person puts the pieces together for all of us.
The way I always saw it was the Source is the Writers of the books and therefore the thing that's at the top of Creation with the Overvoid being over Omniverse, and The Presence being over the Multiverse. I don't know though it's very convoluted and confusing and I doubt we'll ever get a definitive answer and probably have to rely on our own head canon

In dark crisis its revealed that great darkness predates everything and the light ie presence made overvoid which made great darkness scream and it withdrew from there . The presence made an aspect of itself ie source to make the greater omniverse who created hands and perpetua was one of them . She didn't created the main multiverse as source wanted so she was locked inside source wall and presence then created archangels to do the work . Source is an aspect of presence.

My personal idea for the cosmetology comes from a mix of things both from DC and other mediums that I'm more versed in. The way I like to see it, is what the majority believes simply is. Because of this, the only answer, is the answer itself.

In a video of Imaginary Axis, Scott Snyder confirmed that The Presence and The Source are the same entity and that The Presence, Michael, Lucifer, and Gabriel from The Sphere or Gods are just emanations of the real ones who live above everything.
Also, Grant Morrison confirmed that The Overvoid, The Source, and The Source are the same entity.

Supergirl being an angel seems surprisingly non-random. Superman was allways connected to monoteism in general and judaism epsecially. Superman is the only son of the house of "El", sent to earth as some sort of ultrapowerful moral paragon. "El" is the word for "Lord" in hebrew - the language of jewish scriptures/the old testament. "Krypton" means "the hidden", in greek. The language of the new testament.
That said I havent read those comics. Im sure they are crazy. The concept just makes sense from a language standpoint.

Also, quick question - isn’t Unwritten Leviathan technically the most powerful entity in DC (and Marvel) since it can erase not only a representation of writers like Overvoid, but the writer himself?
Thanks! To answer your question, Unwritten is not a book that takes place in DC Comics continuity. I understand it's confusing, but not all Vertigo books take place in the DC Universe.

Great video. I'm relatively recently got into DC and Marvel and your channel, among others, has been so helpful. It's a daunting thing to get into at this point but you and your community make me feel welcome among the comics fandom. Grant Morrison is one of my favourite comics writers I've encountered so far and I had no idea they were non-binary (like me!) until this video. So thanks for including that, it made me feel good which is probably weird but wcyd.
I always felt that the presence exists as sort of an emissary of the monitor mind or the overvoid or just the overvoid taken shape.. the source represents the energies of the omniverse derived from the presence who out of curiosity, created and commissioned several hands to create and shape creations.. That explains why the hands despite being created by a far greater maker, are oblivious to the existence of this maker although they come in contact with and use it's energy that is the source in their creations.. only the three great archangels created and made known of the existence of a greater being are therefore elevated above the rest in both power and consciousness..
I honestly wouldn't even be mad if God was just a tubby British man with a bowler hat and a sick mustache.

I've come with two possibilities based on my limited understanding.
I believe that there either exists an all-powerful God in DC. And the Overvoid, The Prescence, and the Source are all different by comparable aspects/avatars that make up that God.
My second thought is that these three different things are actually all the same thing, the same being, just perceived differently by different people. The Source is God perceived by the New Gods, The PRescence is God perceived by Humanity, and the Overvoid is God perceived by the Monitors.
The reason for the contradictory information is that the understand of each group of people can only understand a part of God's majesty instead of the true whole.
I would love to see a multiverse explained series!

I guess what makes sense to me is a pseudo-meta explanation, if the overvoid is simply the blank of the page, I think it makes sense to interpret the “flaw” as a pen stroke and the “hand of creation” as the real life hands who draw and write these stories, I think this also makes sense with the Sandman story about dreams forming reality, because these stories are fiction that’s written and drawn, they are literally created from real world imagination.
The more i read this statement the more profound it start to look!

I maintain the most interesting thing Young Justice ever did was genuinely try to tie a characters religion with their superhero identity in Doctor fate and Zatarra (even better than what they did for Halo because that felt like a much more simplified endeavor to act as set dressing)
14:44 Just to clarify, the Christian God is broken up into three entities. The Jewish God is unified. So Judeo-Christian is a serious misnomer here.
"Dead cops and the Wrath of God" sounds like what Garth Ennis would create in the alternate timeline where he writes good comics

I've looked all through The sandman issue 1 through 4 and just can't find it. Does it happen later in the sandman or is it another set of comic books entirely? help is highly appriciated
In my interpretation the source is just an energy, that many higher levels life form use, as well as the great darkness. While they've both shown signs of having a thoughts and feelings, I think this more has do with them being the retention of good and evil respectively and all the ideas that go with that. So when people interact with them, it acts like thought in their brains, creating the illusion of consciousness for the source and the greater darkness. The over monitor and once Hecate guard the sources use. The Empty Hand and Upside Down Man guard the great darkness. The workers for the source are the hands, great darkness the other kind. The mistake was Perpetua making her universe to be a weapon. The containment of the flaw sounds like the placement of the source wall, which is where Perpetua imprisoned. The Presence was just sent to deal with the mess Perpetua made, he didn’t make the universe, for according to the rules set up in Scott Snyder's Justice League he should've died or moved on as soon as he created the universe and created another universe. He did neither, therefore he either broke a shit ton of rules or just didn't have any role in creating the DC Universe. All living ideas types for obvious reasons are tied to either the source or great darkness. All other gods are just smoke and mirrors.
I first I was against it but maybe the presence is just the idea of higher being that lower sentient give form . No different from the endless. He is powerful because all believe in him to be the great father( even if they don't want).
Like everyone hunger for meeting they creator.
Only problem is what is Lucifer and the angels
@@Watch-0w1 but who would believe he the great father, for barely anyone know he even exists, plus Dream has a list of God's based on belief and he rules over them, but Dream bows down to the Presence, implying the Presence is more than just a creature formed from belief.

After recapping sandman. I notice that dream ( all other endless as well) where give personality base on how some would see them to be. Like dream being a emo uptight boy always seeking love. People is influenced by dream and dream is influenced by it dreamer.
