      I laughed at first but when he said anime fans don't really understand what they're watching it's so true. There's times when I watch an episode of an anime and there's this scene that I'm like "wow that was a really great scene. It really showed the dynamics of each character and showed off their growth. It was an interesting interaction". Then I look at the comments under the anime and they're talking about dumb shit like oooo I ship this person and that person ooooo this 15 second scene was so funny. They're talking about everything other than the scenes that actually matter. It's like their brains turn off for anything that's not super simple comedy or shipping characters.

    • @EyesDontCry
      @EyesDontCry Месяц назад +4

      @@philo2189 that's not really fair my man. If comedy is in the show, it was meant to be laughed at.
      Misunderstanding a theme or scene is one thing, but simply enjoying a show for the parts you enjoy says nothing about how smart you are.
      I love deep thoughtful stories that explore a characters mind, but I also like to have a laugh and not always take it too seriously.
      The art is always upto interpretation, for all you know that person did pick up on the exact same thing as you, they just didn't feel like talking about it, perhaps they are a person who just likes to laugh and so thought it better to comment on how funny a certain scene was.
      Shipping is a whole other can of worms but exists in a similar vein. There's nothing wrong with seeing 2 characters and thinking about romantic implications for them. Now if the literal only thing you take away from a show is the ship you have, then sure that's a bit silly. But just commenting on a ship you like in a show you like doesn't make you stupid, again they are just discussing what they wanted to talk about.
      At the end of the day people engage with media in different ways. Breaking bad is one of the best shows in modern times, and yet we get "wahlter" and heisenberg keeling over memes. Just because someone makes a little joke about breaking bad doesn't mean they don't get breaking bad, just because someone makes their heisenberg x saul goodman (awesome) fanfic, doesn't mean they don't care about Walter whites complex character.
      Not every bit of discourse over a good show needs to be super in depth and analytical, part of the fun is taking what's there and making something out of it that you like.

    It’s been 3 hours and hot take #2 is already iconic. And I love “art is a two way conversation” quote, because it’s so true, and I feel like people lean too much on one side or the other on the Death of the Author debate.

  • @ScadrianGhostblood
    @ScadrianGhostblood Месяц назад +9

    I really agree with your take 2. When I watch something from my country I watch it in my language, but when for example it came from America, Japan or other country, I always try to watch with subs.
    I also absolutely hate how death of the author is so common nowadays and how people use it. I understand when someone wants to ignore problematic authors or ignore racist messages. Lovecraft was a terrible person but that doesn't mean we should burn all his books. He is dead and we can grow cosmic horror without racism.
    Instead however, most people online use death of the author as a way to defend their farfetched "interpretations" that are basically fanfiction and as a way to completely ignore existence of any message they don't like or haven't thought of.
    "What do you mean this was meant to show how war can destroy moral compass of a young child, this author is clearly pro genocide and you are just defending him!!!"

    • @thomasffrench3639
      @thomasffrench3639 Месяц назад +1

      Interpretation is sort of what art is. It is meant to touch us and make us feel emotion. The thing is that people experience emotions differently, so the meaning is just subjective.

    • @ScadrianGhostblood
      @ScadrianGhostblood Месяц назад

      @@thomasffrench3639 I do think that everyone should interpret art on their own and find their meaning. I also think that headcanons and theories are important in our experience of stories. My problem is when people completely throw away authors and their backgrounds and messages. I think that we need a balance between us and the author. In the end it's their creation they deserve respect even when we don't agree with them. That is why I hate death of the author

    • @animusfoster4712
      @animusfoster4712 7 дней назад +1

      @@ScadrianGhostblood No, I agree with you. I feel like people forget that while art is subjective and people will interpret their emotions differently, the intent of art is to get you outside of your own comfort zone. Usually, the point with any type of art is that you should be able to interpret what the author/artist was conveying. At the same time, it’s important to also put your thoughts together and get them across. However, people sometimes forget that first point of understanding the author’s intent and instead prioritize their feelings instead. Of course, there’s times when an author or artist fails to actually convey what they mean, it happens. The gist is that all of this is basic literature skills, and it feels like people just forget about it.

    • @ScadrianGhostblood
      @ScadrianGhostblood 7 дней назад

      @@animusfoster4712 a recent example of this I can think of is when George rr Martin a couple of months ago shared online that he was in a bad mental state because of his friends passing on and because of the state of the world and political landscape. He shared that he hoped that with his stories and art he would be able to influence people towards better future.
      While I understand that people are mad at him because of lack of winds of winter, a lot of people were genuinely confused and dismissed asoiaf books having a political message and made fun of him wanting to influence them.
      If you have read asoiaf books you should know that George isn't at all subtle in his opinions on politics.
      To me it doesn't really matter if someone agrees or disagrees with a message of an author. I myself don't agree on everything with George.
      But completely dismissing him and his attempts at conversation between an author and reader by the medium of books?
      That to me completely misses the point of art

    That 2nd take is so true. I usually watch anime in the sub cos they were usually made with the Japanese language in mind, but I do make a few exception which are: Black Lagoon and Cyberpunk Edgerunners (Dub is actually just superior in every way), Ghibli films (I'll usually watch them twice in sub and dub cos they get really good English VAs like Christian Bale as Howl), and older anime, specifically late 90s and early 2000s works like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. For a lot of these it comes down to swearing and stuff like that. I think it just fits better in the dub when there's a lot of cursing cos words like 'fuck' or 'shit' stand out a lot more in English than they do in Japanese.👍

      They put so much jargon in the cyberpunk edgerunners dub, I would switch back and forth watching that and honestly I had to leave the subs intended for the Japanese version on just to tell what the hell they were even saying. Maybe if you play the game you'd understand it. Anyway, IMO the subbed version was pretty good. I don't think the sub was "better." in any way, and like I said I had trouble understanding it sometimes. Also, black lagoon in dub has one major problem which is there's actually a scene where Revy speaks English instead of Japanese and that obviously doesn't work in the dub. One dub I really liked though was the first season of JoJo's, since they actually speak this old-timey British accent English which is really appropriate for the setting. There's also "how not to summon a demon lord" where they actually add a bunch of jokes to the dub which are pretty funny (and it's not exactly some work of art anyway, lmao)

    About the 2nd take, that made me remember the whole watch order thing with Monogatari, but specially the Hana/Koyomi with novel order that a lot of people are really against it because it ruins the tension of other arcs or something, but as far as Monogatari goes it was never the most straightforward form of storytelling.
    So it's quite amusing seeing people trying to fit some 'normal' storytelling into the story in this case when it was already quite chaotic from the get-go. As someone who ended up watching broadcast order and has the bias of experiencing the series first that way I still don't see a good argument against someone experiencing the series the novel way.

    I personally use a like/don't like system. I find that to be the most accurate system to gauge "enjoyment". Which makes people question me when I rarely "dislike" an anime because anime I don't like I don't even make it past the 1 episode mark so it never even gets a rating. Survivorship bias I guess.

    #2 is an intersting bit to me since I think the death of the author is more applicable to like, after the fact stuff. So say a show comes out which implies a lot of a romantic relationship with characters. There's pretty much everything short of like, a kiss or something, but no one watching it reads it as anything romantic. Then the creator comes and says "No, they're just friends." Or I dunno, some JK Rowling filling in background that the show how one of them actually was married, but never showed it.
    I think this is where "intent" is kind of hard to tell. Since we only have what's there. If the creator wanted us to see that intent, why isn't in its media? Though this goes with your communicaiton with the creator. If the creator failed to put that thing in their work, does intent matter there? Or are we, the audience, able to take the piece of media where the author won't. It is a balance thing there. But I do think sometimes after a product is done, a creator sometimes tries to retroactively add to something where they didn't do it the first time. It's a peeve of mine when I see a creator go "I meant Y, not X" when all I see on screen is X, and Y isn't knowable from the media itself. I guess it's as much able to criticize for failure to do what was intended also.
    On the original subs v. dub bit htough, yeah, watch what you like, but original intent on language matters. I think a lot of things like humor and msic especially just don't translate well. At the same time, I wonder if osme dubs what hte author thinks. Something about Blck Lagoon to me feels like it *should* be in English, even if the original material was Japanese, but it might be in part how the manga's author prsented stuff.

    I dont necessarily think rating shows is bad. As you said, i think the issue is the misconception that "my 8/10 = your 8/10". I think attempting to find a criteria to base a show on, weighing the pros and cons, and coming to a numerical conclusion, while yes it is very inconsistent and impossible to pertain to the same basis across the board, is still good. The concept of a rating system is what makes room for discussion, but its often used for the total opposite. W video

      when someone asks for hot takes, they're not looking to just get flooded with "thing peak!" "thing mid!" "thing over/under rated!" like... give a real opinion.
      it's basically no better than fans of team sports at this point. it's like saying "go colts!" like, okay, I understand you are pro colts now. but this is not team sports, it's a wholeass piece of media, and no matter how loud you shout that, it is never going to convince me more than if you have an actual reason.
      like, you could say "Spy x Family mid" or you could say:
      I thought Spy x Family had a strong hook, and I actually really enjoyed the first season. but after a while, it felt like Yor was severely underutilized (I know this changes later), and the show was leaning far too much into its situational/slice of life elements for my taste. and especially for anything to do with Loid and Yor's romance... it feels like progress is going to take forEVER to happen between them. normally I'm all for a slow burn, but I'd rather not have every element of a show burning that slow at once, and that's how Spy x Family started to make me feel. I especially get bored with some of the cutaways to Anya and her school friends... a lot of them are decently funny situationally comedic material in isolation, but they just feel like interruptions to the spy plot that we're usually following with Loid.
      that. that right there. is an actual opinion. that's something that could spawn a conversation. and it still communicates the opinion that I'm lukewarm on Spy x Family... but I have reasons. this isn't just "go team Spy x Family" or whatever. I'm not about to mascot-ify a whole show, and pit it against the next popular thing that comes along. this is not a sport, or a dog fighting competition, this is media consumption. what's the point of consuming a whole story if it only hits the brain at a glancing blow like this?? like, was all you got out of the show just a new title to yell "yea/nay" at???
      so yeah, that's my little example and rant. if anyone's confused on what my position is, there ya go.

I occasionally take issue with certain translations made, but the fact of the matter is watching with subs does give you a more authentic experience of the actual work than dubs. The only time watching dub over sub is justified is if the dub is particularly good and enhances the work, such as with Cowboy Bebop.

    Hot take : I would like the high school trope to disappear. I am not interested in the slightest to see another high school dynamic or arbitrary schooling system to be explained. I want characters that are above the age of 20 to bumble their way through adulthood. Oh an another one, I am so sick and tired of the hero's journey protagonist is gotta set out to prove themself, give me a character that is already confident in their being and skills and doesn't need to go through life altering character arcs, just drop em into the world and set them on their way, ala Frieren

    1:23 this generations kids iq are way down in the negatives.
    8:01 Absolute Clowns making 7/10 mean average, liked, mindlessly watched just to keep record of "i've watched it."
    11:01 Gushing over Magical Girls had to issue 18+ or 16+ warning labels at the beginning of each episode halfway in because (dont know full every detail) very incell like american reviewing labels/sites (maybe japan aswell) didnt like the EROTIC show featuring shorter girls (espically that blond loli, they at least limited her lewdness to 2 moments remembering) of a very kid friendly genre of Magical Girls being nude every episode. Omfg.
    Harem note. Hate how animes do harem, no build up or some miniscule, blatant reason to why. (blantant ex: 100 gfs anime) Just happens, worse are the 10 cash grab isekais every year. Rather they continue the decent roster of isekais from 2010, but guess not, thatll never happen. (NOT RECAP OVERLORD MOVIE CUMMING!!)

    first take and third take are intertwined, some anime fans can only communicate whether they like a show or not by called it a “4/10” or a “mid”, this isn’t unique to anime either, all entertainment media fall under this umbrella

    I agree with your point about wanting to experience an author's vision. For me that is the appeal of reading books and manga since the author has the most control over the whole writing/creative process. I do not feel the same way about movies and animation. Since there are so many people working on one project, it does not feel as a specific author's work at that point. When a voice actor reads the lines, that is only their interpretation of what was written by a writer who had to interpret the manga's vision.

  • @valor555
    @valor555 Месяц назад +1

    With point 2 it is impossible unless someone speaks the original language fluently. Because subs are gonna change context and other things to translate. And even then not being japanese is also gonna have a huge impact of not picking up the intricacies and subtltues that come with being a native speaker. And we can't pick up on the voice actors in the other language over reacting and being cartoony.

    • @shaydboss1481
      @shaydboss1481 Месяц назад

      Yeah I was gonna say, subs aren't really any more accurate than dubs when it comes to translation. So if you aren't fluent in the native language anyway, it doesn't make much difference how you watch it.

    • @thomasffrench3639
      @thomasffrench3639 Месяц назад

      It does make a difference tho. Just because you don't understand the language doesn't mean the viewing experience is the same. That's just how it is.

    With Hot Take #2, Subs aren't really much more accurate than a dub in terms of getting all of the intricacies of the language down. They're still meant to be as easily understood in English as possible. So unless you are a fluent Japanese speaker, it's not gonna make much difference if you choose between subs or dubs.

    • @thomasffrench3639
      @thomasffrench3639 Месяц назад +1

      Acting does a lot to add to a series. Sure it might not be accurate, however it is more authentic.

    • @shaydboss1481
      @shaydboss1481 Месяц назад

      @@thomasffrench3639 that is true but, in the case of anime at least, all you have is the vocal performance. While that is important as well, it's also gonna be harder to truly appreciate it if you don't speak the language. So in that sense, I still don't think it'll make much difference one way or the other. But that's just my opinion.

  • @nathankeel6667
    @nathankeel6667 Месяц назад

    Wail I do think that you should try to enjoying art the way the other intended its a logical take,for foreign media and in this case Japanese to English its really hard even with subtitles to truely get that because not only are the languages setence structure wildly different things like polite vs casual speak does effect how someone who could listen and understand its meaning compared to a translation. For example saying hello has like 5 levels to it + different words based on context
