I don't recommend anyone buying this cool device with a screen with a "privacy guard" feature if you are going to use pen a lot, e.g. for taking notes, since it becomes dim at certain angle even when that feature is off, which in particular means that it is very hard to find a comfortable position to be able to see the screen while drawing/taking notes.
I must say, as a rather proud owner of a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 (which your review helped me decide to purchase :) ), this seems like an incremental, but overall good update. I opted for the 4K, top-end Intel i7-1186G7 CPU spec version of the Gen 6, so my battery life is not... the best. But, I knew that going into it, and overall it's a worthwhile trade off for me. I would be curious how the 4K OLED panel of the Gen 7 compares to the 4K LCD panel of the Gen 6 with regards to quality and battery life. Thanks for the awesome reviews! :)

I hope they ironed out all the OLED bugs from the GEN2. My Gen2 OLED screen was replaced 3 times under warranty. Each time was weeks waiting for new screens to come into stock. They offered a standard LED screen since the OLED's were not available and failing. I bought the GEN2 specifically for the OLED though. Eventually Lenovo replaced the whole computer under warranty but sadly this one is having the same exact problem. Just ordered the GEN 7 OLED as I am expecting a few months for my GEN 2 to be fixed again and seriously doubt the screen is available anymore. At least still under warranty. I notice Lenovo quickly dropped the OLED option from Gen3 to Gen6. I hope that was to figure out what was failing in the GEN2 OLED's. I did get the 5 year, on site warranty just in case though.
Yeah I've been on the Gen2 for about 5 years now, too. I had to order a replacement panel directly from China and install it myself. I've only had to do it once, though, and I have another backup just in case.
Several reasons; Ultrabooks do not really need upgradeable RAM as they are mainly bought by people that know what they need, eg Enterprise and business. Also, 16GB is the most people need for these machines as they are not meant for hardcore workflows. Another reason is latency, soldered to the motherboard rather than using another connector. Then these Ultrabooks are thin and light and saving space where you can (and weight) all helps these packages. Having removable RAM in gaming machines, prosumer laptops and desktops still exists for many as they may indeed need upgrades and weight and size not an issue. Obviously as we move to ARM then even then we will have less options for upgradeable RAM, due to the nature of the architecture.
Space for Intel and AMD Ultrabooks (so they can be thinner). For M1 Macs, it's because the RAM is in a unified architecture with the CPU for improved speed.

Do the keys go inside the body when you convert it to tablet mode like it did with X380 Yoga Thinkpad? Because that feature is priceless. Otherwise you cannot keep the device on any surface apprehending damage to the keyboard and not to mention, it make holding the device in tablet mode easier!
Thanks for the review. I got the Gen 6 loaded about a month ago, used via eBay. One of my favorite notebooks. It is super light, love the built in pen and all the ports, especially the "regular" USB. Coming from the Dell XPS that I spent over $3k, I like the yoga better. The Dell track pad went out on me after a year and the screws came out on their own. Like Apple's computers the screen on the Dell didn't unfold enough which is why I am such a big fan of the convertible or at least the 180 degree range. I never thought I would buy a thinkpad after Lenovo bought IBM's PC business however I am impressed. I am hoping for a Snapdragon Gen 7 for better battery life and a cooler running computer. It would be cool to have a dedicated graphics card with something like a Snapdragon but don't know how the performance would compare to Intel based? Is the fingerprint reader any better on Gen 7 than the Gen 6? Keep up the great work!
My old Yoga has socket upgradable wifi. Inexcusable they they don't allow user upgradable Wifi and RAM. I mean, how much could that possibly cost? I hate being stuck with 16GB when RAM is pretty cheap. I put 64GB into my NUC, cause why not..
Thanks for the review. The pen actually looks good this time. Would you put it alittle above HP's MPP, but below the Slim Pen 2? Also, do you have a favorite Wacom AES pen for people that feel the included pen is too small?
Exactly, better than HP's, not quite as good as the latest Surface pen tech like the Slim Pen 2. I think it would be more than good enough for note taking, but artists might want for a little more (though it gets by for art).
Pen is the exact same AES tech they've been using for the past 7 years, if anything it's long overdue for an update. This was actually the only deal breaker for me for X1 Yoga. The fact that Lenovo hasn't updated their flagships to MPP 3.0 (Surface tech) or EMR (Galaxy Book) is ridiculous.
Are you able to boot from disk? Can run on nearly anything w 4gb ram. Checkout a modded ISO like tiny11 if you wanna try on a small partition before expanding it wiping current system.
Lisa, great review! Can you review the X1 Nano Gen 2, please? It looks great on paper (and I want to buy it) but I have the suspicion that it has thermal issues. The X1 Nano Gen 2 has been available since the beginning of May and there is not a single review on RUclips.
I'm curious, as a business school student (who will be doing some movie editing for fun), how does the surface studio laptop compare? I like that comparison on the 2022 spectre video. Thanks!
OLED isnt more efficient on any device. if at lower brightness, it does use a little less than LCD, but at higher brightness it uses a lot more than LCD, balancing out to OLED using more power. its chose for picture quality and size of the packaging (oled is way smaller than LCD because of all of the layers to LCD)
OLED is probably not going to be a big seller in this lineup as this is mainly an Enterprise ultrabook and businesses are unlikely to stump up the extra for an OLED especially with the many cons. I suspect Lenovo did not sell many and ditched OLED for a hike but this year they will probably have a small line producing them for the few takers. On white background OLED is less efficient than LCD. Also, as you increase brightness on an OLED it is not linear like LCD, so the higher brightness = increased higher wattage compared to LCD. Also, OLED tend to have higher resolution due to the pixel arrangement where the matrix has gaps in, meaning a 1080p OLED looks less sharp than an LCD. So a 2.5-2.8K or even preferably a 4K will mean a much higher draw on power. So generally OLED is not the best choice on business laptops used on the go. For a lucky student that can afford it and will never be far from a socket then the OLED is an option especially a it will be better for media when not studying.
OLED is very efficient when displaying blacks and dark colors. It is however much less power efficient when displaying whites and light colors-- like the average web page or office document. On PCs, we tend to look at white (ish) screens a lot, so power consumption is higher with OLED. Using a dark theme helps with this. Also the OLED is 4k, so the big resolution bump also uses more power.

Most of my work is done in this type of setup but I'd like to try the portability of this version as well. Thanks for the feedback!
You can't "dock" like the old ones. The docking stations just connect with a cable to the usb-c port; it's basically one huge dongle that connects with a cable to the side of the laptop.
I bought two thinkpads, t14s aluminum and carbon fiber, whichone is better and one with aluminum body is 100 dollars cheaper which one should I keep and which to return. Can someone help me ?
One of the things I don't like about the thinner lap tops is not having a cd/dvd player. Which means you have to get an external one. But the prices don't go down on the lap tops. Instead you are paying the same or more plus the added cost. I like your reviews because you cover all the bases we want to know plus more. Thanks for that.
You get a bigger battery instead, people don't want drives. Now even windows laptops get 6-12 hours of battery life, it's not a MacBook thing anymore, those get 20 hours or more thought but it's all cost on better cooling and no redundant cd drives.
What exactly does my age have to do with it? But just for you I'll tell you that I have Windows 10. I'm up to date on electronics. I'm allowed to say what I like. It should be an option. It's just another way for v computer companies to charge the same but give you less.
I understand that if I have the laptop at 4K full resolution, it will drain the battery faster. But if I have the 4K screen but set at 1080p, will that help the battery?
A little feedback for you : your explanation sometime do not conform with the shot you put on your video. Like you were highlighting the aesthetics of the laptop when explaining the processor. Why? And often, it gets really boring when two things just do not run in parallel. Overall, it’s a good video but need more polishing. Regardless, I watch your video primarily for that T-shirt. Lol.
Love your reviews - always considered Lenovo, but.... they will not make a screen brighter than 300 nits for under 2,000 in the business class - and good luck finding a 1080 / 5MP camera on anything but the 12th gen models. Buying massively overpriced DDR5 today for 12th gen, before chipsets and thermal controls have caught up is just money down the drain.
Agreed with another commenter about falling quality: just after 2 years, my yoga x1 gen 5 has now failed battery (sometimes it suddenly drops from 100% to 0, sometimes it doesnt charge and doesnt boot;.my solution is to put it into refrigerator for 1min; whatever the reason it helps. No, it is not overheated though.) The mics stopped working too. The display has a different surface texture 2cm on the sides, as if the display cover layer got washed out. A small wine coil. Sad.
Have the MacBook Air M1 second tier one with 512ssd 8GPU and I love it . It’s my first laptop of any kind. I think Apple spoiled me thinking every laptop runs so well like this.
Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience with my Lenovo Gen 6 X1 Yoga. My screen failed after only 1.5 years of use, along with the motherboard. I spent 2k on a laptop and trusted Lenovo to give a quality product, but I was wrong. This was also the 2nd laptop I got from them after another issue from the first one they sent. Quality control has gone down. Happily, I now own a M1 Macbook Air.

Even thicker gaming laptops don't have those
Wow. You really must’ve been born in 1955. Haven’t seen a laptop with a disk drive in 15 years or more.
You get a bigger battery instead, people don't want drives. Now even windows laptops get 6-12 hours of battery life, it's not a MacBook thing anymore, those get 20 hours or more thought but it's all cost on better cooling and no redundant cd drives.
How old are you?
Laptops don't come with DVD players anymore and they haven't for ages. You must still be racking an old Toshiba running windows 7.
More pixels more power unfortunately
Is this good for adobe apps?
Is this touch resistant when using drawing pen?
I'm glad to see this product mature. it seemed like such a gimmick when it started
Luckily I can assure that separate of all the aspects thought of as gimmicks, they're very solid machines
If Lisa hasn't reviewed it yet, then I'm not interested
Why is the fan on constantly and so loud? Has there been a fix to that?
Lisa, you reckon I can plug an external GPU to one of these thunderbolts and turn it into a gaming rig or rendering machine?
Pretty sure you can buy or build a desktop...
Could you please review the new framework laptop (12th Gen Intel) ?
A little feedback for you : your explanation sometime do not conform with the shot you put on your video. Like you were highlighting the aesthetics of the laptop when explaining the processor. Why? And often, it gets really boring when two things just do not run in parallel.
Overall, it’s a good video but need more polishing. Regardless, I watch your video primarily for that T-shirt. Lol.
Do the keys tuck in when transformed?
No
Love your reviews - always considered Lenovo, but.... they will not make a screen brighter than 300 nits for under 2,000 in the business class - and good luck finding a 1080 / 5MP camera on anything but the 12th gen models. Buying massively overpriced DDR5 today for 12th gen, before chipsets and thermal controls have caught up is just money down the drain.
Lack of microSD and minus 1 USB A type port is drastically upsetting to me. Idk if anybody else agrees.
Gotta save space somehow!
Might need a multi adapter or micro/SD to USB
Agreed with another commenter about falling quality: just after 2 years, my yoga x1 gen 5 has now failed battery (sometimes it suddenly drops from 100% to 0, sometimes it doesnt charge and doesnt boot;.my solution is to put it into refrigerator for 1min; whatever the reason it helps. No, it is not overheated though.) The mics stopped working too. The display has a different surface texture 2cm on the sides, as if the display cover layer got washed out. A small wine coil. Sad.
lenovo changed twice my keyboard in my gen5 x1.. i miss my stolen gen2
i got an xps instead because the screen is miles better.
Some improvement on touch pad not being red colour, but keyboard remain the same disgusting red colour.
New introo!!?? Or am i just seeing it now
Been using this intro for a while (at least a year).
@@mobiletechreview ahh...ive been rewatching your old reviews too much. !!
👍👍👍
Have the MacBook Air M1 second tier one with 512ssd 8GPU and I love it . It’s my first laptop of any kind. I think Apple spoiled me thinking every laptop runs so well like this.
Most Laptops at that price run like that, its just easier to go wrong with windows than with mac
7:21 replaceable USB ports? WOW
The USB port will last longer than the life of the laptop 😂 but it's nice to see
Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience with my Lenovo Gen 6 X1 Yoga.
Gen 6 was not even available 1.5 years ago. It came on sale March 2021 worldwide.
@@ubermod5564 Yes it was, if not 1 yr is appropriate because I got it when it came out.
@@AliB19 That's unlucky, I guess there's always a percentage of duds that's can occur, although I do believe the ThinkPads quality control is reduced in recent years.
