  • We set sail from Whale Firth on the island of Yell, and make a passage through the challenging waters of Yell Sound and Linga Sound. Our destination? The thriving capital of Shetland, Lerwick. An impending change in weather forces us to seek refuge for a few days, giving us time to explore mainland Shetland,.
We embark on a land expedition that takes us to both the northern and southern extremities of Shetland, where we delve deep into the island's rich tapestry of wildlife and history. Be prepared to be mesmerized as we witness majestic orcas gracing the seas, playful sea otters frolicking in their natural habitat, and the endearing presence of grey seals. The steep cliffs are alive with the sights and sounds of unique sea birds, and the land beneath us is adorned with rare and exquisite coastal flora including Edmondston's Chickweed, a flower that grows nowhere else in the world than on a small rocky outcrop on Unst!
We visit the historic site of Jarlshof and Sumburgh Head with its iconic lighthouse.
Our journey through time unveils the layers of Shetland's history, from ancient prehistoric sites to the sagas of Viking exploration, the legacy of medieval settlements, and the more recent chapters in the islands' story. These historic footprints have left an indelible mark on Shetland's development, shaping its distinctive character and cultural heritage.

Okay, Shetland just made the short list. It may not be a hub for the whisky scene but what a beautiful, historic place. Nice video, Daniel. Slainte!

Well, apparently there even is a whisky distillery in Lerwick, but it didn‘t make it on our list this time… 😉

I really look forward to every video you post.
I was lucky enough to see them in Canada up close almost 20 years ago. I will never forget that.
OMG the puffins are just too cute. Thank you so much Kathrin and Daniel to put so much effort and work into this.

Another wonderful lesson on the history and natural history of the islands you visit. I am very grateful of the time and effort you put into sharing with us your journey, thank you both very much. It's only a few hours on a ferry from Orkney so looks like a two centre summer holiday for us next summer.

Very interesting visit and report Daniel. I like your way to include history and tradition in your videos, together with showing the wonderful nature of those places. I might not be able to sail up there by boat, I lost my chance this past summer, but may be one day by ferry....

I had the privilege of visiting these northern bastions of the United Kingdom many moons ago. I stayed at RAF Saxa Vord on Unst, which operates early warning RADAR. I was on a Sub Aqua diving trip from my parent unit, RAF Leuchars. Getting there, I didn't think it was possible to take so many ferry trips in one day.
I loved all the different names and places which seemed to come from a distant bygone age but somehow kept alive. My favorite was Muckle Flugga. Many RAF units would have station mottos in Latin. Sometimes they could be a bit corny, but not Saxa Vord. Their motto is "Praemoneo de Periculis" which means 'I give advanced warning about danger'. Unfortunately, a valuable asset in today's world. 🤬

Oh, yeah, and much we haven‘t told, e.g. the Space Terminal at the decommissioned RAF base, the Gin distillery and, and, and…
Thanks for watching and for your enlightening background. Glad you like the videos! 🙏🏻
