When I need a big table, I go to the library. When your kids are little, make friends with the school librarian (volunteering for a story time or two always has it's perks) or research your public library. Mine has conference rooms with huge tables that you can reserve for no charge. I always take my big mat when pin basting a quilt to protect the table. But if you like to work on the floor, there are huge rooms that they keep empty and put down as many folding chairs as you need... just tell them you don't need any chairs, just the floor space. If your public library doesn't have conference rooms, ask if you can work in the study area on a day that there's hardly anyone there. Also, try a college or university library. You can use many of them without being a student. (At my university it only cost $25 a year to be a student with no classes.) Mine is open to the public, but there are restrictions to who can check books out. Truth is my public library even has sewing machines and cutting machines and lots more... It even has a green screen. I'm lucky to live in a big city. 💕🌞🌵😷
@@Sylvia907 , in highschool, I worked at the library... shelving, checking out books, putting plastic covers on new books... I even got to filed cards in the card catalog (above the rod at first, but eventually, below). But thinking back, I don't remember the library being used much after school. And not at all during summer break... These are times when a quilter could have the place to their selves, hours on end. Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.
Y'ever have one of those moments when you read something and then wish to bash your head against the wall because why the heckadoodle did you not think of that? Because of course! The Library would have a huge table! It would be so easy to do. And now I'm going to do that. I just need to wait for my next utility bill to get a library card
I just recently made a big paper piece quilt. My technique was a little less professional. I had to make the airforce logo so I used my child's kid projector and wrapping paper taped to the wall. Turned out pretty good 😂
You are a mind reader. I was searching madly for a pattern that is no longer in circulation, but I wanted to make one on a larger scale myself. Thank you thank you thank you!!! ❤❤❤
This will work great for some rather expensive fabric I have. (I know, all quilting fabric is expensive, too expensive if you ask me). This is a great way to show the fabric and since this pattern can be used for any occasion, the possibilities are endless. Thank you so much for the great video and the free downloads, it really does help having those resources available since quilting has simply become too darn expensive. Have a great week, everyone.
Oooooh! This idea would be ideal for some special fabrics I bought on vacation to New Mexico last year. The material I bought has such great designs I knew I didn’t want to cut them into regular patchwork sizes. You da best, KB.
This is Awesome! I designed a large mariner's star quilt in EQ8 and have been putting it off because I hadn't figured out how to piece it. Thank you so much for solving my problem. This quilt will definitely move up on my list.
Thank you for sharing! I always learn from you. I always preshrink which gets the fabric on the grain. Then I starch to lessen stretching. I do tear my fabric first. I have seen the fabric off grain up to six inches. When the manufacturer rolls the fabric onto the bolt most the time it is rolled off grain.
Karen, I tried to print the 60" Mariner's Star pattern but it only printed the first top left corner of the page and that was large size. How do I get it to print the other pages of the block? (I am using an new hp printer.) HELP!
Thank you so very much! The mariners compass is the first quilt pattern that gave me all the feels. I have always been intimidated with the small pieces (I have large hands.). This is perfect for me! I thank you to the depths of my heart. My dad was a sailor, and I really need to do this in his memory ❤️
I love this pattern and as soon as I get guts enough to try smaller FPP, I'll add this to my list. I wish I'd known about the Birch sooner. I just bought a new mattress earlier this year and I hate it. I can't justify another one just yet, but I'll keep this in mind. Thank you for all of your great ideas.
You make this look easy! I like the idea of upsizing a block to make it a one block quilt. This will work for so many blocks, it’s a great idea. Even upsizing to make a large 9 patch with the blocks could look great depending on the block. Thank you.
I love big block quilts!! I just moved to a house with a big house length deck that faces the road, it is just begging for a quilt to be hung over the side and photographed. I am just itching for a chance to start a new quilt!
Same! It's my go-to for an easy small project, and having a spare baby quilt to give means you don't scramble when you didn't know someone was expecting.
Once again you have inspired me to try something new!!! I love the mariners star block and it's so nice of you to make it available to us!! Not sure if I have the computer skills needed to enlarge a pattern. Keep sewing and sharing!!
Freezer paper!! …I looked and searched for butcher paper but kept finding only the unwaxed kind, plain on both sides. Then freezer paper popped up. Yes! That’s another name for what you used
Make Modern emagazine has fabulous large quilt block quilts. I don’t subscribe to many these days but this one is great. Karen did a chat with them a couple of years ago.
Make modern is great! BTW If you like to read on a kindle or tablet see if your library has a digital catalog. My local library does and I follow several quilting magazines on there. Mine is free and I also don’t get cluttered up with the physical magazines. Saves me space money and keeps paper out of the trash 👍🏻
Your quilt looks fabulous! I felt a bit 🫨 trying to follow your steps but it was a busy Sunday with church & family. I’ll rewatch when my head is more clear!
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts I’m familiar with FPP. I think it was upscaling it so much that messed with my head. But I’ll watch your FPP & freezer paper FPP videos - when I’m not so worn out!! 😉
Your quilt is stunning! So nice to see someone who does paper piecing WITHOUT stitching through the paper. Thay makes such a mess & ripping out all that paper is so time consuming & time wasting. Do you like your cordless iron? I'm thinking of getting one.
I'm sure there is a good reason and I'm not asking Google correctly...but what's the advantage to using paper-piecing for something so large vs just measuring and cutting pieces without paper?
For some reason, my printer sees he download as 1 page and will not break down the page to print on multiple sheets of paper. I am going to try to send it to my part time work place printer to see if it will print there. If not, I will try to print it at Office Depot or some place like that. I would really like to do this in a large queen size quilt also. Just have to figure it out. Thanks for the download and video.
