  • My love for the Volkswagen Touareg is well known to anyone who has followed Beards 'n Cars for some time, and this CR generation VW Touareg might honestly be the best all round SUV you can buy.
Just consider what it offers for the money: Handsome but understated and classy style, which both looks expensive but not offensive. A strong powertrain including a shockingly fast 460 bhp R model, and with even this 260 horsepower model being capable of hitting 60 mph in 6 seconds.
This coupled with proportions which make it spacious with great road presence, but not difficult to park lengthways nor obnoxious to arrive in, and with a well organised and space age looking interior suited to both executive wants and family needs...

I've just bought a near-new 210kw Touareg R-line, have had it for three weeks. Prior to that I had a 200kw S-line Q7 for five years, which was 8yo when I sold it with 100,000kms on it. Frankly the Touareg is not in the same park as the Q7. Although you probably wouldn't expect it to be given there is a NZ$30.000 price difference here. But to imply they are nearly equal is incorrect in my experienced opinion. The Q7 handled much better than the Touareg does, had a much better ride, less audible/harsh engine noise, better exhaust note, less lumpy suspension (both cars are air susp) was quieter inside, had significantly better brakes/brake feel (I was a bit shocked at how little brake feel there is on the Touareg), and the interior was much better quality, The user fuctionality of the Touareg's controls is confusing and feels cheap compared to the Q7, which even at 8yo had every feature (and some) that the Touareg has (apart from the ungainly widescreen TV on the dash). Most surprisingly the Q7 was ALOT more economical than the Touareg has so far proven to be.That one is really making me scratch my head, since the Touareg is nearly 8 years younger, with the same engine/drivetrain and much the same weight. To be honest I'm more than a little disappointed that the new Touareg is not as good as my 8yo 100km Q7. But then I couldn't afford a new Q7... so I shouldn't really complain. The Touareg is still probably a much better car than most other SUVs on the road, and I am not completely displeased with it, but a Q7 equivalent it is not.

Hi ! Is it the new 2023 Touareg 3.0 diesel ? Had a test drive in it , 21 inch wheels, air-suspension, overall quite impressed with it: quiet inside, very comfy.., but never had the chance to compare it with the Q7/Q8 .. Do you think the 19 inch wheels would be a disadvantage-too small when cornering ? Also the basic audio system is rather poor, so perhaps I'll spec the 1500 euro Dynaudio, kind of nervous about it since don't have the chance to listen to one in a Touareg.. Any suggestions from you would be more than welcomed !

@@georgepotcovaru2595 Hi. That post was 8mo ago now. I took the Touareg (was a 3.0 diesel 210kw) on a 1500km trip and when I got back, I decided to trade it in on an older (2019) but very low mileage (25km) SQ7 (which is an absolute beast of a car!).
I would expect that 19" rims with taller sidewall tyres would make the handling feel a bit more rolly in corners, but maybe a bit more forgivign on lumpier roads? Yup I too would always spec the premium sound. Always.
