Perfect Japanese classic for beginners? - 1978 Toyota Celica (A40) XT 2000 Review - Beards n Cars
I've bought another classic! And this time its my first Japanese retro ride in the form of a 1978 Toyota Celica XT2000 Liftback from the RA40 era, complete with a Japan-spec 18R-U 2.0 litre motor, 3 speed auto transmission, and seems to be one of only 3 or so on the road here in the UK!
As some will know from the channel already, I've never been particularly into Celica's, but after spotting a couple of these 2nd generation cars for sale on eBay at the same time, I showed them to my girlfriend and she fell in love with this slightly earlier example in black. Fast forward a day or two and here we are with my latest purchase, and one which in my opinion may actually be an ideal first classic...

Does the BMW E30 actually live up to the hype? - 1989 BMW 320i Review - Beards n Cars
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 месяца назад
Few German performance cars are quite as hyped these days as the E30 generation BMW 3 Series, but with that hype comes not only the likely chance of prices spiralling upward for mostly nostalgic reasons, as can be seen with the vastly overinflated JDM market, but also the risk of these cars not living up to the hype when it comes to actually owning and driving them... Naturally then I jumped at...
The best budget car in South Africa? - Toyota Starlet Xs - Beards n Cars
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 месяца назад
While visiting South Africa again recently, we of course rented another car for the week, and this time around it was one of what is possibly the best (some may even say THE best) affordable daily runabouts in the sub R300,000 segment, especially in its R226,000 entry level form even when brand new - the facelift shape Toyota Starlet. The one which we spent our week in Durban with in particular...
'Car of The Year' 2023 Awards | Beards 'n Cars Top 10 Best Cars of The Year

With another year of Beards n Cars car reviews wrapping up, its time to crown my 2023 Car of The Year, as well as the 9 best other cars which really stood out to me during the year. From classic Lincoln's and Ford's to Aston's beautiful Rapide, and from the massive Cadillac Escalade ESV to the tiny Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, it was a year which saw fewer cars featured than usual due to how busy I...
Why this little jellybean is my 'Car of The Year' 2023 - Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2 - Beards n Cars

The Daihatsu Sirion isn't exactly synonymous with most people's idea of a performance car, but as any who know my taste in super obscure fast cars in the sphere of Gran Turismo will know - I legitimately love the Daihatsu Storia X4. A rally-ready monster which absolutely dominated the sub 1000 cc class in Japanese rally events. This incarnation is a 2003 Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, and although no...

The beautiful Rapide has consistently been my favourite Aston Martin model for years now, and I have of course previously reviewed the more powerful 'Rapide S' version in a previous episode of Beards 'n Cars. Cadillac Escalade ESV - Why I bought a Mammoth Yank SUV as my new daily driver - Beards n Cars

The Cadillac Escalade is of course America's premiere luxury SUV, the Stateside equivalent of a Range Rover if you will. And one of the relatively few 4x4s of the time which can genuinely rival a Hummer for sheer size - and far outclass it for seats and practicality. But with its massive physical proportions, large L92 6.2 litre Vortec V8 engine, potentially excessive fuel usage by UK standards...

Owning a Volkswagen Golf R32 is a tempting proposition, from its highly practical Mk5 Golf platform, to the lovely 3.2 V6 motor shared with the Audi TT, to its AWD and excellent handling, and all for surprisingly affordable prices compared to other hot hatches with similar sized engines... The Maserati Quattroporte is a stunningly tempting car on the used market, primarily because unlike its two natural rivals - the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide - it is actually remarkably affordable, with the majority of used examples for sale in the UK coming in at well under the £20k mark - with some examples even offered at half of that amount... The prospect of owning a Maserati is simultaneously very appealing, and for many very worrying. And both sides make sense: On the one hand you have stunning looks, beautiful sounds, and a more affordable entry point to a Ferrari-esque experience. As covered in my review of the Viper-engined Dodge Ram SRT-10, my hopes for that potentially beastly truck were definitely dampened once I drove it. I'm Aussie, and yes, the second generation Toyota Celica liftback was popular. In fact, though my budget in 1978 only stretched to a Toyota Corolla coupe (which also was pillarless), I would have loved to have a Celica liftback. My Corolla coupe was only a 1.2 litre. I would also have liked a Corolla liftback, but they were hard to get. The Toyota T-18 would have been good too (1.8 litre). Those would be very rare these days.

The car plays in a totally different league compared the 4 Porte or the ugly duckling Porsche Panamera. At least the Maserati gives you emotions as well but not on that leve as this Aston. The Aston is built as solid as a tank. The huge sills and the way the doors open... the frameless side windows and the absense of wind noise.... The used materials and the attention to detail make it so much different and by far more individual especially compared to the mass production and low emotion Panamera. The V12 engine is highly emotional and it is very quick. The sound is breathtaking. In S mode it stretches it´s muscles. Reasonable driving on long distances make you wonder that there is a 6.0 V12 under the bonnet. The latest "S" models have the ZF 8 speed auto box which is simply superb. Ultra smooth in automatic mode. At 100mph it only revs at about 1.800rpm!!! The Bang & Olufsen sound system plays in it´s own world. By far the best sound system I ever had in a car. This system should be fitted to all cars with shitty sounding engines (more than 95% nowadays!). In a V12 Aston you never can decide wether to listen to the engine sound or the music.... one of these luxury problems...

The E30 M3 needs to be taken in the proper context. Being the homologation street version of a spectacular racing car on a track it remains the benchmark for a wonderfully fun responsive magnificent driver's car. On the street it rides rough, the engine is harsh and the high narrow power band will have you constantly working the gears to keep it on the boil. Meanwhile the 325i handles and stops just as well, is just as responsive, is basically as fast, has a smooth engine and rides much better.

The thing at least with the 320i is that with the weird powerband for street it kinda suffers on the lower end, so you push the pedal more to compensate and the mpg in average is worse than a 323 or 325 surprisingly. Mine does 25 mpg on a good day, though i guess it depends on many other factors due to the age. But it’s a classic car you may not care about mileage as much.

I think this is a very good review. I love my V12 HE - it has style and elegance. It is not the proverbial off a shovel - but it can easily keep up with the flow. I think it handles very well - just one steering input going into a corner even with a bit of pace - no sense of understeer or need to adjust the line. Mine is a Coupe - you can be chatting with the passenger at 30 mph - and accelerate to 90 mph (in Germany!) without needing to raise your voice to carry on the conversation. I am not worried about the value - I just love the car and will keep it for the rest of my life - it’s actually in my will to go to my brother alongs with £50k so that he can enjoy it and look after it without any worries. I like lots of other cars too - I’m just saying that the XJ-S is a special car for me and I’d recommend people try them - but keep going until you find a good example. Peter

It's hard to believe that as a reviewer of these cars you NEVER mentioned their horrific quality control issues. The 6.75 liter is known for blowing head gaskets and the electronics in these cars keeps the warning lights on constantly. That is why they are in the sub $20,000 range. The word is out about the high maintenance costs on these cars. Since the Silver Seraph has the BMW V12, it doesn't have the same issues that the Arnage does in terms of head gaskets issues. Anyone of these cars that you find for sale, be expected to spend over $15,000 in repairs within 1 to 2 years. Although I love their design and style, i would NEVER buy one due to their high cost of ownership.

I always say it feels like it fits me like a glove. I've driven countless cars from the 1920s to brand new and the E30 just feels like it's one of the best cars, ever built in comparison to all of them. It's not better per SE, but it just feels like it is, which is good enough for me.
