- My most pretentious opinion is that media literacy is real and most peoples opinions on art can be dismissed.

It is undeniably anti-intellectual. When they realised that they had zero understanding of the media they consumed, they turned media literacy into an insult to encourage a shallow understanding among like-minded people
The people who use media literacy as an insult are the same people who were proud of getting low scores in school. They're proud of their own inability to understand things beyond the surface.
Honestly it's pretty scary to see literacy of any kind being used as an insult.
Have you read "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman? He talks a lot about how American literary and intellectual culture has evolved, and the impact of technology on it. I think its pretty relevant to this discussion. I found the description of Abraham Lincoln's famous debates to be particularly distressing, in comparison to what modern political discussion is today.
I'll try to find that, thank you for the recommendation!
"And, until you see someone else completely disregard the lore of your favorite game, y'all try to have a good day."
Terminal, I like 40k; you are giving me negative time of a good day
WHY ARE YOU WISHING ME A BAD DAY, TERMINAL? WHY, TERMINAL?
Just realizing this video is a shot, months in the making, at Abe for bug posting when I tried to offer terminid sympathetic positions
Media Literacy isn't just about understanding fiction, it's about knowing how to get access to information using the internet or the news and understanding how media can lie to you, identifying scams and unrealistic promises from ads, etc. I've never heard of 'media literate' being used as an insult (though I've seen the opposite a million times; media illiterate), but if a rightoid were to use it as an insult, they are probably people who live in a right wing media echo chamber and think all new media is 'pushing an agenda' and all progressive messaging from older stuff was just a coincidence or 'didn't shove it down my throat'.
no yeah, you are right, it is applicable to way more than just fiction. i just see it as an insult when directed towards fictional stories. i don't think i've ever heard anyone (on the internet) bring it up about a non-fictional source before you, just now.
engaging with media is a fundamentally lame activity, it's just fun to make fun of nerds, specially when they take themselves seriously, either way you should not take my kind into consideration, i'm just explaining my POV
your kind of what into consideration?
