You need at least 11:5:1 compression to really take advantage of those W2 heads anyway its going to run good. I knew Bob back in the day taught me a lot about heads good video.
Compression just like everything is important to an engine build, but at the end of the day it is one of the least important parts. Keeping the engine happy on pump gas is the most important thing to us, and with roughtly 10.5:1 with the solid roller and the unported W2 heads, it will work just fine. Hot Rod did an almost identical build to what I am gonna end up with(since I am gonna run a W2 tunnel ram now, and their engine did very excellent on the dyno
@@ScottsSpeedShop Yeah I agree with what you said I forgot they were no ported anyway the W2s open the gates to the engine they respond very well better than stock iron heads even ported ones with higher compression. In a stock head you for the sake of numbers gain 30HP at 11:1 with w2s it could be 40 to 50 HP.
Awesome project,my buddy has a 340 4-speed Demon his Dad gave him when we were in high school. His came with the X heads and that thing was a blast to drive when we were just 16. Good luck with your new project.
My buddies and I raced 340 Super Stock cars back in the 70's. One 4 speed car and 2 auto. My auto 71 Duster ran a best 11.20's by the guy I sold it to. The 4 speed Duster got the original W2 heads and a Dominator carb. He ran 10.40's. They both ran AHRA HS2 and HSA2. That was around 1975/76. Those cast iron W2 made a big difference! My car ran 122mph. The W2 ran 130+mph if my memory is correct. Wish I had the money back then to try the W2's. Good luck on your project. I now drive a very nice 71 Demon 340, 4speed with 14 400 original miles.
I built a W-2 360 0.060" over, to 371 c.i., back when the W-2 heads first came out. Back then Mopar made the W-2 heads in house, before later contracting them out. The original W-2 intakes were made by Holley and only available through Direct Connection dealers, not from any Holley dealers. I had the water heated, single plane, "Street Dominator" intake, with a Holley 855 carb, with its staggered jetting squared, to mimic the Holley 850 double pumper jetting, as the staggered jetting was made for the 1966 427 Chevy engine. I used 0.020" over, low compression 340 pistons. I machined the removable rocker shaft stands to mount 90 degrees over on their sides, to allow using standard length 340 valves. This also fixes the shaft offset from center, that shortening the pedestals wouldn't allow.

Jed, as always great content love the 340 specially with a W-2 set up. I had a similar setup back in the day, drag racing a 70 Duster. Please check on the special oiling system, needed! love you and dad…
Hey brother me and my son are working on a 76' dodge Aspen R T with a 318 we was wondering if you might be interested in letting the 360 duster engine go be awesome in our Aspen R T
Hey Scott I have a question for you if you can answer it for me I have a 1990 d250 5.2 v8 318 with a holley throttle body how do I get my truck to stop surging
I have a set of w2 race heads I was wondering what push rods you are going with I've heard you need longer than stock. I'm building a 360 with this setup.
I honestly cannot answer your question at this time, the engine is at the machine shop getting prepped so I can assemble it later this year, I will probably order pushrods from smith brothers
Are solid rollers any good for a street cruiser? It's a hard choice. Solid FT is the simplest with the least moving parts but these days they eat themselves out.
I'd only trust solid lifters whether it be roller or flat tappet, but I'd only buy from a real American company like Hughes, they use Johnson lifters, made in Michigan
Great build bro! Similar cam to my build, do you have flow numbers on those heads? If they flow well that motor will go 7000rpm. Make sure oiling system will keep up with that rpm tho, that’s what killed my motor
W2s in stock unported will support the rpm and flow from what I've been told. Some people on the forums also believe my heads are indeed ported but I haven't had them flowed. As for the oiling, I got the complete milodon road race setup, and we are do the oil crossover in the valley
Could the counterweight on a 340 forged crank be milled down to make it lighter or would it weaken the crank too much for this build? It wouldn't make a lot of sense but I am curious
The money spent on doing that would honestly be better spent on an aftermarket crank. But turning the counterweights down would effectively make it a 273 crank
@@ScottsSpeedShop if u started with a forged 340 crank instead of a cast 340 crank, theoretically, would that make sense to do it? Thanks for replying!
@@jeremyhorvwalt6630 well I was always referring to a forged crank, they are lighter and stronger than their cast counterparts. Knife edging the counterweights would reduce weight and significantly help with windage, so I would say if you wanted to do anything to a crank, it would that
@@ScottsSpeedShop thanks for answering my question. I didn't realize you were referring to a forged crank to start with. The revving faster part of the last video got me curious. Thanks Jed!
I have always liked the 340 engine. With those W2s port matched with the great valve train and bump stick, you should have no problem "leaving them in the dust", aka The Duster. One question. The block came .030 over. If you had your druthers, would you have preferred a stock bore or gone maybe .010 over?
Jegs was bought by Greenbriar Equity Group in February of 2022. Greenbriar Equity Group has a close partnership with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I will _NEVER_ buy from Jegs again. But none of that matters on this build as everything you have for the build predates the acquisition.
You are the second person to tell me this, I haven't done anything with the company since the acquisition really. It's a tragic shame what's happened there
The car is not number matching so why would you worry about keeping the engine all iron and actually limiting the horsepower that you could actually get it and then if you were to put the aluminum heads and stuff on it. Smh

@@marcusmaddenov2451 that is very true, but I think we will still be cutting the pistons
@@ScottsSpeedShop it's an easy fix really... Once you mock it up and get your measurements just flycut the tops of the Pistons to get the desired clearance..
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage that's the plan brother
Love the look of the duster cant wait to see the 340 ready to drop in an merry Christmas jed an happy new year an may God bless your family
Merry Christmas brother, thanks for checking it out
Great video very informative this is what I like to see,but I also find all your projects just as interesting as the other
Much appreciated man
Go big or go home ! Let's talk about this motor in private jed !
We can discuss it, shoot me an email chargerjezebel70@yahoo.com
340+W-2 = Super Saiyan Small block!
Dude, I spit tea out when I saw your username, freaking made my morning lmao
@@ScottsSpeedShop haha! The sound and feel of a well built sb mopar screaming to 7k will make your hairs stand up!, no they wont start glowing gold but it will sure feel like they are about too lol!
Well organized in mind how u have it all layed out how it's going on, it's been a jit since u rebuild a engine on vid and excited to watch another build again, giving it a awesome motor will def make it a true duster first sure, merry Xmas to u and the fam bro🎄
I haven't built an engine since my dealing with cancer and it honestly scares me a bit.
@@ScottsSpeedShop Sorry u experienced that life robbing disease and defeated it as well, the encouragement u show tells that ur brave to keep pushing on, I am Inspired who u become and with good family, friends by ur side to show the world who u made of, getting thru fears is how u stand today, keep that faith going brother🤘
Looks like I am going to have to step up my build now hahahahah
I know where more w2s are lol
Merry xmas Jed, and dad. Good rundown on the 340 engine, a strong collection of matched parts. You really did your research there. Like you, looking forward to seeing the rebuild and discovering just what it makes on the dyno. Oh yeah! The duster is a brawny car and deserves this motor, It will make a rugged combination.
Thanks man, I did my best to match my parts as best as I could, and I couldn't have done it without my friends
@@ScottsSpeedShop True, good friends are priceless, cooperation and community are what bring us together and brighten our days.
Pro stock hemi would be bad ass in the old dodge van lol sleeper at its finest probably wouldn't fint under the dog house but would be cool that's for sure
Except Dad would go broke buying 116 for it lmao
That cam is a beaut
Victor is pretty good I have a Victor Jr on my S10 got a 327/365 in a 94 GMC sanoma
I just look at how that Victor W2 runners are set up in comparison to the Strip Dominator, and I got a feeling the Strip Dominator would kick the Victors but all day
When I hear full roller I get happy. I got hyd flat shit that smokes them.
Should be a real cool build Jed
Jezebels engine Sounds So SWEAT WOW
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the noise
Love the builds goin on merry Christmas an hope all is well.
I mentioned to you a while back how impressive my long ago buddy's 340 was but I'm pretty sure yours is going to be far better. Your Duster will have a most appropriate name as it will be leaving many other street machines in the dust. Kudos.
I like that, it doesn't need a fancy name, it's the Duster
Looking forward to this build. I remember hearing way back in the day that the W2s were supposed to become production line heads. Damn that would’ve been awesome! Can you imagine being able to pull W2s from the wrecking yards today lol!
That would have been freaking awesome
On a Lil' Red Express Truck, which was STILL quicker than a 'Vette that year!
Bring on the dancing ladies and confetti
Only if you breaking out the tequila and that mini skirt again 😘 lmao
Very cool, can't get enough W2 content !
Best of luck with your build !
Thanks man, this should be a fun one
Jed, as always great content love the 340 specially with a W-2 set up. I had a similar setup back in the day, drag racing a 70 Duster. Please check on the special oiling system, needed! love you and dad…
We got all the oiling mods and what not accounted for
Loving this build.. Looks like you've gotten a killer package together! This 340 should SING!!! YEAH BABY!!!
Gonna sound SWEET ripping up to 7500rpm!
Its gonna scream like a freaking banshee, I can't wait man
Thank you for this video.
Hey brother me and my son are working on a 76' dodge Aspen R T with a 318 we was wondering if you might be interested in letting the 360 duster engine go be awesome in our Aspen R T
I won't be pulling the 360 until the 340 is done, but I'll be selling the 360 once the swap is done
Awesome project. Awesome engine.always liked the duster.
A real H code car.
Yep, I had to remember the correct code for the duster
Awesome!
can you use OCTANE BOOSTER ? we have 98 octane and i put octane booster on a friday night !
Hey Jed! What machine shop did you say you were using? Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Advanced Engine Machine in Salina Kansas, best damn Machine shop and Engine builder in my opinion. Have a merry Christmas
Can't wait to see how much power it makes. Love the duster!
Hopefully it doesn't disappoint
Hey Scott I have a question for you if you can answer it for me I have a 1990 d250 5.2 v8 318 with a holley throttle body how do I get my truck to stop surging
Put a carburetor on it lol honestly I have no idea, but I'll say this, check your fuel filter before you do anything
I'll check it
Mill the pistons.
Probably gonna have to for sure
I have a set of w2 race heads I was wondering what push rods you are going with I've heard you need longer than stock. I'm building a 360 with this setup.
I honestly cannot answer your question at this time, the engine is at the machine shop getting prepped so I can assemble it later this year, I will probably order pushrods from smith brothers
@@ScottsSpeedShop Gotcha thanks for the response.
Is this the engine that you use electrolysis to clean up?
Yes it was
It was cool to see.
Anytime my brother
Great build bro! Similar cam to my build, do you have flow numbers on those heads? If they flow well that motor will go 7000rpm. Make sure oiling system will keep up with that rpm tho, that’s what killed my motor
Yes I agree special oiling system needed. definitely a must to check into!!!
W2s in stock unported will support the rpm and flow from what I've been told. Some people on the forums also believe my heads are indeed ported but I haven't had them flowed. As for the oiling, I got the complete milodon road race setup, and we are do the oil crossover in the valley
Awesome 😀👍🏻👍🏻
Sounds like it outta be a 450 horse engine maybe closer to 500
That's all it needs to be in my opinion
This is an outrageous question, but the pro stock Hemi, when you get ready to run it with all your fans, will it be on nitro just to make it cackle???
The Pro Stock will be running on 116 octane fuel, and that engine will live it's life on the run stand and on the engine dyno as an educational piece
Thanks Jed!
Someone else needs to like this video pretty dang quick I am currently 666 person to like it.
I can unlike it lol
I have always liked the 340 engine. With those W2s port matched with the great valve train and bump stick, you should have no problem "leaving them in the dust", aka The Duster. One question. The block came .030 over. If you had your druthers, would you have preferred a stock bore or gone maybe .010 over?
I would much rather have had a standard bore engine or .010 over or .020 over. I also prefer to go the absolute minimum bore as possible
👍💪

Smh
1st!!!
Woohoo!
TO MUCH TALKING LETS SEE SOME WORK AND RESULTS
You watched the wrong video then
If they would have put W-2s from the factory on all the 340 cars SBC owners would have jumped off buildings
