  • The government is taking a unique approach to control the record-breaking population of wild horses. There are an estimated 88,000 of them across the country. The American icons are protected by a law passed by Congress in 1971. Now there is a new effort to help them find a home. Nikki Battiste reports.

My wife and I adopted two 1 year female (filly's) mustangs last year. I'm 71 and never had a horse before, but I volunteer at a local rescue barn and learned a lot there. I built two run ins, and installed an 800' 5' high fence around our small field. They are doing very well, just enough grass to graze and very easy keepers. Wish more people would help these wonderful animals out.

    • @bearswithglasses

I assume your horses get regular vet checks and are doing well, but it's very dangerous to make it seem like such a small space is enough, nutritionally, for horses. This simply isn't true. Horses that can't graze in the wild need to have a supplemented diet (which I'm sure you're doing); people might get the wrong idea from your post that you can just throw some horses onto a grassy area and they'll be fine.

@@bearswithglasses Yes, my horses get regular vet checks, shots, farrier care and my facility was just inspected by a local county extension agent who signed off on their well being. I will receive my ownership papers from the BLM shortly after my year of being their caretaker. Of course my horses get feed morning and evening with 1st cut hay, plus they receive "Mare and Foal" vitamin supplement morning and night. They each have a 12x12 run in with a 30x30 corral. The paddock is 2 acres and they have free range to that when not being worked with (training/farrier/vet) What they don't do is spend 12-16 hours a day cooped up in a 12x12 stall staring at the wall. Mine have complete freedom to graze, run, roll in mud or do what ever else they want 24/7. My biggest problem I had so far is the negativity I received from domestic horse owners, those same folks who keep their horses in stalls most of their lives. I have an excellent mentor and with her help, owning mustangs as a new to horses person has been pretty easy imo..

We are buying land in texas after we pay off our 2 houses in a year n half and plan on adopting up to 4 which is the limit as well.
We also will be going to rescue at least 2 calfs from a local dairy farmer since they have no use for males and let them have a good life (not for food) and not be disposed of as well.

Not one word about public-lands ranching! The land can support way more than 27,000 wild horses but not if your goal is to fill it with as many fee-paying animals as possible (mostly cattle and sheep).

I came to this video because I saw a video about Hertz Car Rental going into Bankruptcy. People started talking about taxi sharing and ride sharing services in the future. Then someone said that they were thinking about getting a horse for transportation.
Now I have a farm in Puerto Rico with lots of land and a river flowing through the Middle of my farm. It's fenced off with wrought iron and concrete walls that are twelve feet tall. In Puerto Rico it is perfectly legal to ride a horse in the streets and roads.
But I have been having trouble contacting The United States Bureau of Land Management for information about adopting a horse.
It's not about the money, which I have plenty of. I would love to adopt a few horses since I have already adopted a couple of dogs.

If they hadn't completely destroyed the wolf population in Utah and the rest of the US, this wouldn't be as big of an issue. Adopting out wild horses isn't the answer, returning apex predators to their natural habitat is. The population will be back to or exceed 88,000 next year, and it's not sustainable to simply adopt out hundreds of thousands of horses- where are we going to put them? Moving wild horses into someone's backyard just creates a void in the wild that more horses can fill the following year, and you can only fit so many horses into someone's paddocks. Moving the 61,000 horses around the country doesn't fix anything.

They were never native to the U.S., which negates any reason for Apex predators. I don't think wolves would chase after horses anyways. Needless to say there should be no Feral horses, all horses should be domesticated. Having them be feral was ignorance on the highest levels. It's needless suffering and pain of horses just so a very small number of people could watch them in the wild.

    • @mokomothman5713
      @mokomothman5713 4 года назад +2

@@rs72098 All horses should be domesticated? So you believe that we should inter on Nature when it doesn't need us there? Look, I'm not an environmentalist, but I think it's a bit obtuse to make an observation like that, knowing full well horses were wild before they were tamed by the GokTurks, and then passed across the Eurasian continent, into Europe, into Great Britain, etc, etc. Horses are just like cattle, in that regard. They are so widespread and prevalent, that they and nature are now one in the same.

    • @rs72098
      @rs72098 4 года назад

@@mokomothman5713 It doesn't make sense to have them running wild in the U.S. when they aren't even native. the origins of horses started approximately 4 million years ago in North America, where they then migrated between continents (presumably by crossing the Bering land bridge) and later returned to North America with many different Equus species. the last known prehistoric native North American horses died out between 11,000 and 13,000 years ago, but the domesticated horse is believed to not have shown up at any one place or time, but rather were bred from multiple wild species. some of these sub species that originated from North America have been found in modern horses today. yes we all know that the horses here today were brought over with the Spanish conquest and escaped domesticated horses spread throughout the great plains, but they quickly returned to their ancient behavioral patterns when returning to the wild. all this said, technically, these horses are a re-introduced native species, not a feral, exotic, invasive species. just wrote this to clear up some arguments I've seen in the comment section.

There are hundreds and thousands of people out there who would love to own and help these mustangs but simply do not have a large pasture or farm environment to home with them. There are plenty of people who are willing to adopt the mustangs. However it is the B.L.M ridiculous rules to adopt one that stops people from adopting. Mainly the height and type of fencing required.
Applicant must have a facility that meets:
    • Minimum of 400 sq. feet of corral space per animal,
    i.e. 20’ X 20’ (untrained animals)
    • Minimum of 144 sq. feet per animal, 12’ X 12’
(trained animals that are exercised daily)
    • Suitable materials: pipe panels, wood post,
planks (min. 1.5” thick), horse fence ( V Mesh or
    2” X 4” square)
    • 5’ High for yearling or gentled horse of any age
    • 6’ High for an ungentled horse two years or older
    • 4.5’ High for a burro of any age
    • Shelter that meets the minimum requirements
chart for wild horses and burros based on the
state or region in which the animal resides, unless
otherwise stipulated by the authorized officer
Your going to need that $1000 to by a 6' 12 x 12 enclosure. Because according to the BLM wild mustangs jump higher than any horse. This is utter nonsense 🙄mustangs are not very tall it is the height of the horse that determines how high it can jump. This is why you don't see mustangs used for jumping.
I own an acre of fenced-in land with a 3 sided barn so plenty of room and shelter.
I was told however that I would have to replace my entire existing fence wich worked fine for keeping my other 2 horses in. With a 6ft fence using the type of fencing useally used for round pens. $ 100 6x6 panel.
The B.L.M would rather send hundreds of wild horses of to Canada or Mexico for slaughter then work with people willing to adopt a mustang or even several.
I have no horses right now so would have room for 4 mustangs they would have a quarter of an acre each. But the fence is just not good enough.
I live in Utah and every year we have several roundups, the way the B.L.M. does these roundups is shameful 😕 and extremely stressful for the horses who get chased into round pens or holding pens with low flying helicopters being a prey animal the horses are running for their lives. Many get injured babies get separated from their mothers, mares from fear have miscarriages while running for their life. Only to run into a holding pen so overcrowded the horses trample each other to death.
That is how much the B.L.M. cares about the wild mustangs.
In the meantime I can offer a good home, but my fence is not high.

Any horse can jump any fence less than 6' tall & run through any thing less than plank boards 2" thick, pipe or steel 1/4 acre will only feed a horse for 1 month at the most then you will need to buy feed for the rest of the horses life Hay cost is now around $120. $200. per ton. 1 ton of hay might feed a horse for 30-40 days. some of the places the so called wild horses are at it takes over 640 ACRES to feed each horse for 1 year. then there is Water which they need to survive 20 gallon each Day.

🤣 one of the top Olympic jumping horses was a 14.2 hand pony. 🤦‍♀️ Many mustangs are 15 hands, some are 16+. They can easily clear a 5 foot fence, I've even seen them clear 6 feet. You have absolutely no clue about horses in general, and mustang's in particular. Just stop trying to sound like some kind of "expert", because you aren't.

The wild mustang! Symbol of the free and open west! Would it really cost so much, to have hundred or 200 acre ranch, and a small herd just running wild and free? 🐎🐎🐎🐎

    • @ramondfox6327

A 200 acre ranch will at the most only support 6-8 wild horses without feeding the. In some parts of the country 200 acres won't even feed 1 wild horse for 1 year

85% of US land has none of these wild mustangs roaming free. How is this an overpopulation issue? Seeing these beautiful creatures being rounded up like that is one of the saddest things to witness. Let them roam free. Man playing God is the problem here they are devastating ecosystems with infrastructure plans that do not take into account that we need nature, nature doesn't need us. Showing videos like this is the candy coated version of what is really happening. Yes, I'm sure kind hearted decent people are adopting these wild mustangs but the majority of the adoptions go to people just in it for the money and these horses are unkempt and locked up like prison inmates only to be uthenized after they get their money. It's inhumane and a very sad analogy for the world we live in today.
