  • Deb Lee Carson and Jamie Baldanza are proud to present the award winning pilot episode, “Twin Peaks” from the docu-series “Wild Lands Wild Horses” on RUclips.
We are offering the pilot episode free of charge because we need you to help America fall in love with our wild lands and wild horses and invite you to partner with us.
    ABOUT THE DOCU-SERIES
An idea was born; back about four or so years ago. Two wild horse photographers, after spending time on the range together, recognized that the wild horses were caught up in a tug of war between many people-those for and those against their existence on the western range. These same two photographers were also dismayed at the number of Americans who did not know they even existed. Then there was the inability to find real ‘truth’ or unbiased data or accurate statistics regarding the ‘plight’ of the wild horses on the range. Finally, there were the mustang’s own stories, those heart swelling stories of wild horses who have been gathered-stories of great success, incredibly sad stories with amazing endings, and stories of those who find their new homes and their only job is to just be themselves.
So, after a time Jamie said, “Let’s bring the wild horses to ALL of America, and get them to fall in love, and along the way we will talk to as many stakeholders as possible so we can find the truth!” Deb said, “Hell ya!!!”
In the docu-series Wild Lands Wild Horses, we bring you the compelling story of a former wild mustang, combined with beautiful cinematography from the wild western range that mustang once called home, then weave this mustang’s story with exclusive conversations with those tasked with managing our public lands, along with scientists, public land stakeholders, wildlife advocates and more, who-despite their differences all share the same goal-TO KEEP THE WEST WILD.
The pilot episode, "Twin Peaks”, is only one episode out of twelve. In the remaining twelve episodes we will be traveling to America’s ten western states and North Dakota to visit twelve herd management areas and a treasured national park, America’s wild horses call home.
Wild Lands, Wild Horses the docu-series will, to the best of our ability and with your help, cover the following topics in the rest of the series:
    History of the Wild Horse
    Sustainability of the Land
The Origin of the Wild Horse
    Herd Dynamics
    Roundups
    Legislation
    Adoption Stories
Herd Management Solutions (including birth control)
Stakeholder Involvement-which will include the following and much more: government employees, ranchers, miners, wildlife advocates, scientists, artists, anyone who has a vested interest in the use of our public lands.
    ABOUT THE PILOT EPISODE
In the pilot episode “Twin Peaks” we introduce you to the wild horse and burros who call approximately 800,000 acres home in the Golden State of America, California, and was inspired by the story of a tough mustang mare gathered from there, Dani California, and her arduous journey.
“Twin Peaks” was a difficult and remote wilderness area to navigate with a film crew, has ‘true’ wild horses, rocks lots of rocks, and only a few short days to try and obtain the epic shots we had in our minds eye, presented challenges we are not afraid to share with you.
We blend that with hard conversations with multiple stakeholders in search of the common ground needed to manage those thousands of acres and discuss topics such as native vs non-native, rangeland use, roundups, and more.
    CONCLUSION
Sit back, enjoy and thank you for taking time to watch the pilot episode of “Wild Lands Wild Horses” docu-series: Twin Peaks!
You are needed to help us, by partnering with us, and making a small contribution, no amount is too small. We need you because when we ALL work together; we WILL make a difference and bring our wild lands and wild horses to America, one wild story at a time.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for helping America fall in love with our living heritage-the wild, free roaming horses of America!

There has been a study completed in and around the Wild Horse as well as their effect on the land in which they live. The horse is an asset to the lands and the removal of these animals has a negative effect but the real reason they are being removed now is not being told.

The most beautiful documentary on OUR WILD HORSES that do need to be protected and managed properly! I personally have adopted several great wild horses and a mule! Between owning a breed domesticated horse verses a wild horse I personally would ALWAYS pick a wild horse! Those horses are the most reliable durable horses on earth! They are smart, eat less, loyal IF TRAINED PROPERLY, TRUST AND RESPECT IS THE BIGGEST THING THAT, that everyone must earn from a wild horse or mule! Then they will do anything for you as an owner of a wild horse! Have owned stallions from the wild horses! Great strong HORSES! I'd quit my job today give up everything to protect and work if wild horses!

The truth is, is that soil has taught me that the areas in the west truly do benefit from horses. They enrich areas that had no enrichment. They create new watering holes for themselves and for other wildlife in a desert area that previously had not much wildlife. Wild horses change a landscape slowly to help them and this helps the ecosystem as a whole. Places that had eroding or barren landscapes suddenly were renewed. The soil suddenly had good life underneath for insects to thrive and in turn create the diversity needed to create a natural ecosystem. The worst thing we can do now is to deprive the landscape of wild horses and to build on fragile landscapes. Building harms insects and soil life in turn slowly making a vibrant land dull. If you look into soil science and understand the basics of how simply poop from animals creates a biological boom of life, it’s interesting and amazing. You will fully understand the principles needed to sustain and maintain a healthy and vibrant landscape. Goats and rabbit, deer, predator dung all are vital for a healthy soil base in turn helping plants and in turn giving shelter food and life to everything else. Why have we not started with the fundamentals and instead of asking ourselves are they wild, have they lived here before us. If the answers are telling us that horses help the land by simply surviving on it, that’s all that needs to be said. For those thinking horses are damaging the lands, that’s in Australia. Horses and bison have naturally changed our lands for a thousand years. So why change that dynamic?

This film made me cry! These beautiful animals need you, Deb and Jamie! You are fighting the good war. I believe that "our" land should be better-managed so that all these animals may continue to thrive and be wild. People that adopt mustangs, like Clare Staples, are doing the good work too. Not only in providing mustangs with a life where they are free, but also reuniting horses with their bands. It's beyond heartwarming what you all are doing. Thank you!

Adoption is one tool that can better the horses in holding situation. Tip is a great tool and I believe should be extended and the people who tip train have the security that if they spend the time and money to set up their property than find the program suspended time and time again, making it now a drain on some trainers, plus give them more than 90 days if requested for some horses. (Reintroducing some of the horses in holding back to Herd areas that have been depleted or zeroed even better).
The one thing I have found to be completely missing is securing the HMA HA areas land against political pressure. So, other interests know they can not sway their way into more usage. A set plan so no manipulation by other interests, and set what their responsibilities would be. One universal rule could be for those who do lease for livestock would have to be an American family farm/ranch with the owner living and working it-- not an absentee billionaire who hires a manager that has control over lands, lobbys, wildlife societies etc across the US. Nor, a few small border acres that are only drop off places with permit status for 10's of thousands of acres. That only invites corruption. Other interests that buy mineral leases to know these are sensitive areas with limitations, Such as no roads. Instead only allow directional piping from the borders of the HMA and HA's. To be tough because these acres were giving to the horses to reside with the wildlife, others are guests. (only 1% of all American ranchers utilize these designated areas).
Many of the herd areas are within checkerboard. This situation has not been good for the horses in just the last 10 years. Land exchanges could happen so less conflict. 50 years ago when set up the ranchers knew they shared with horses, now new generations and resales have created pressure against them. This is not surprising and agreements that keep the herds intact, (not zeroed as in SE WY) and exchanges be made.
One last thing. As the finches were studied from the 13 islands of the Galapagos islands where the bottleneck differences were identified so could this be done. Many wild horse ecologists have asked for years for a similar study on the different herds. They have differentiated. Eg: the Salt River herd has adapted to eating underwater. More genetic studies, more habitat studies, etc, leaving out livestock resource educated, but to include mammal and wildlife ecologists and evolutionary biologists, and worldwide comparisons of our horses to others through history. -- and honest anthropology, archeology.......

I look after the stray cats and kittens in my neighborhood. I found out some of my neighbors do too! I found life for them is difficult, but somehow some of the kittens make it. At times, i felt that I can't do this anymore. I have learned so much from them, and I continue to learn more

What a beautiful and well done documentary on our wild horses! Truly marvelous footage!! I love the positivity in your message and truly hope and pray that all can understand and commit to working together. The representatives of scientists and BLM was enlightening for me. Thank you so much ladies for this lovely and hopefully inspiring work!

How to count wild horses. Use trail cams at watering holes. Horses can be individually identified especially by the lead stallions. So recounting should be very limited.

They are native and the proof is now there. The woman that says they are not I'll bet you find doesn't like or appreciate these horses nor do they mean much to her.

Horses are native to North America. The horse has evolved here, and its entire evolutionary history occurred here in North America. The "three-toed horse" is not the horse that disappeared from North America 7,000 years ago. There were no three-toed horses in North America in the past few million years. In other words, they were here. However, they went extinct millions of years ago. Again the horse has its entire evolutionary history in North America, except for populations that migrated to separate continents hence Burros, Kiang, Ass, and Zebra. Closer to our modern era, there were at least distinct horse species that all co-existed simultaneously a few thousand years ago. Now, whether these horses are native or not is not clear-cut. I grew up with a herd of wild horses near Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. I lived 10 miles from the herd area, and they were always so cool to see. The wild horse is extinct. The truly wild horse is gone forever, the Mongolian horses were domesticated at least in part, and the entire population descends from 12 individuals, with the wild population disappearing for decades. The last individuals were bred in captivity and released. As I said, the truly wild horse went extinct. I do not know about anyone else but living in a world where the wild horse is extinct is remarkably saddening. If not North America, where the horse has its entire evolutionary history (50 million years), if they do not belong here, then where? Thanks for the documentary. I enjoyed it.

There are some people that get their $1,000 for adopting the horse and then dump them in the slaughter pipeline even before the horses are registered. They do it over and over and over. BLM does not keep track of the horses once they are adopted

Just wanted to let everyone know. If you were curious as to why a lot of the “jacks” had jacked ears, it is from other male burros. Stallions and jacks will go for the ears of their opponents, that is why many light horse breed stallions, like mustangs, have smaller ears. It has adapted to these intense dominance battles. If you watch male donkeys, mules, or burros go at it, they will go for the face, ears, neck, etc. Very effective way of domination quickly.
