I can't thank you enough for this tour. I worked as a stone restorer in the cemetery in the early 1980's, often working through the night. Until now I've never relived the excitement of strolling through the empty cemetery alone and with the sounds of birds, sticks snapping, the distant roar of London... Pure magic, captured in all its glory in real time... Thank you!
I am from Seattle, USA, and what a privilege u gave us who don't have access to such a beautiful site. I can finally say the I "toured" Highgrove. Thank u!!!
Cemeteries have a macabre beauty to them. Such calming places. Quite amazing considering how much grief they have had experienced within them. I’ve been to cemeteries in many countries and so far they have all felt the same.
What a fascinating historical place! The volunteers who took over the care of the cemetery have done a wonderful job! Amazing how it is preserved yet landscaped by Mother Nature!
The fact that the cemetery is overgrown and tangles of ivy grip the trees and gravestones with long sinuous fingers makes it even more beautiful in my opinion , like a mysterious lost world waiting to be explored. Many thanks for sharing 🙏🙏
I lived adjacent to HG Cemetery in 1973 and frequently walked through it. Back then there was sadly a lot of open graves and general neglect, but thankfully these days the Friends of Highgate voluntary group are working selflessly to preserve this historical sacred site.
Very nice walk in these two cemeteries. I prefer the first, the one to the west. It has a lot more charm than the other one which doesn't look like much with the tombs without order; I would say without dignity and without soul. The West Cemetery has a romantic character. I noticed a grave with a large dog lying at the foot of this grave. It softened me. It is quite possible that the West Cemetery is haunted, but by benevolent spirits. There are such places as the Petit Trianon in Versailles. Thank you WW for this long and certainly tiring walk.
Your videos are the best! I’ve been to HighGate and it is massive! The slow pace you keep is perfect for seeing as much of this incredible place as possible!thank you!
This is truly a beautiful video. The TRAGEDY is you didn’t stop on a few of the gravestones so your viewer could appreciate the time and history these people left behind. Thanks for the walkthrough.
Thank you so much for filming this video! I have always wanted to visit this cemetery, but I couldn't go when I was in London last year. What a magical, incredibly beautiful place. I really liked the video format too, quiet, without spoken commentary.
My grandmother would visit Highgate cemetery to read and to write in her diary. She often remarked just how peaceful and quiet it was there. Many thanks for this walking tour.
What an amazing and magical walk. I visited Highgate in 2005 and had recorded my tour of this wonderful place. Unfortunately, when I returned to the USA, I found out that the file had been corrupted and therefore, unplayable. This wonderful video brought back all the fascination, curiosity and magic of that time. This video is excellent. Thank you for bringing back happy memories of my trip to London and Highgate! 😊
Such a beautiful place. I’ve always wanted to visit Highgate Cemetery. Graveyards and cemeteries are so peaceful, understandably. The perfect place to take a quiet walk and reflect. A solitary place where all who are buried there are at peace. I knew Highgate was big but I didn’t realise how big 😱total respect to all and a reminder of our own mortality 🪦🪦🪦❤
I'm from Canada and no doubt watching this I'm looking at some of my ancestors graves as I can date my family back in London to about 1690. It's kind of sad this cemetery looks round down a bit. Nice video. I hope to visit London someday. England looks amazing.
It's run by volunteers and the only funding it gets is what you give at the gate, money is tight and is not helped by (insert appropriate swear words) who think it's cool/protest to do things to Marx's tomb which then has to be repaired or cleaned leaving less for the rest of the repairs and maintenance, I totally get that he's a devisive figure and some people really object but chain a damned protest banner up, not attack it with spray paint or hammers. The friends of Highgate cemetery are doing the best job they can with no local or government aid, they are utterly brilliant people who are saving this atmospheric spot from becoming yet more overpriced London housing! Good job ladies and gentlemen. If you go and take pictures for your RUclips or Instagram etc, drop them a bit of cash on your way out, those likes depended on them!
@@mistywolf312 Thanks for that information. I didn't know any of that and it's such a shame that there's not some kind of financial support for maintenance, etc. Thanks also to those volunteers who do what's necessary to protect such an important place.
@@mistywolf312 I spoke to one of the guides about this on my last visit. There is a financial constraint to the maintenance of the cemetery but there is a conscious decision to treat the area as a nature reserve so everything is maintained around this idea. Consequently the wildlife diversity here is quite incredible, more so jf you think this is located in North London which is not exactly the prettiest part of London. I know as this is where I was born and brought up. The main features though are conserved and looked after. The cemetary is in much better condition now than it was in previous decades. The days when schoolboys used to play football with the skulls of the dead are now long gone.

Amazing cemetery and beautiful monuments. I loved the one with the dog. I've never been to this cemetery but wish I had. You walked your socks off for this one and it's really appreciated.
Highgate always reminds me of this.. Come to me by moonlight when the wind is in the trees, follow me in silence, yet linger among these fallen idols of lost gods and fanes where wild thorns grow, where once we walked, and once we talked, a thousand years ago. Sorry, can't remember who wrote it.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful video. I must say you gave a better tour of the West side than I was allowed several years ago when I went there. They only allowed people in the West side with a tour guide. Our guide literally rushed us along, barely time to study anything or take decent pictures. Didn't appear to be interested in showing us much of anything. I left quite disappointed having come from the US to see this magical place. You've more than made up for all that.
Thanks Melissa! Yes, with the current situation they have allowed people to wander around instead of having to be guided, which I very much appreciated. All the best.

So this is where the dracula origin game got the inspiration from for their cemetery landscape, no wonder i feels familiar ^^;
Excelent video! Thanks
All the best.
thank you for share,i love to london so very nice
