- The king of culinary and fragrant herbs, Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is one of the most popular, tastiest, and productive herbs, and it’s grown all over the world. Noelle shares tips for how to successfully grow Basil in containers, plus she spotlights 4 awesome varieties!
All parts of the basil plant that grow above ground are edible. Basil can be air dried, but for storing fresh basil, it is frequently recommended to chop and freeze it in ice cube trays with water or olive oil. This freezing method preserves close to 100% of the plant’s fresh, delicious flavor and creates a convenience for tossing small servings into soups and sauces for a flavorful boost. Unlike many other herbs, basil’s flavor is actually enhanced by cooking.
You always give me many new ideas and the Genovese basil for pest sounds like a great idea! Thank you, so much Noelle!
Thanks Noelle, as always I learn so much from you.
Should it be always grown in terracotta pots? Ceramic or resin ok?
Ceramic, resin, or plastic pots are fine! Just make sure it has plenty of room for the roots to grow!
My back yard is full sun, southern exposure, but it seems to be a little too much sun. The front is too shaded…any tips for having basil in REALLY full sun without burning it?
This is great information, I’ve learned so much from you about this plant, thank you!
Pinching off flowers actually gives you less basil in the long run as the plants produce flowers now lower in the plant instead of more leaves.
So many great suggestions and helpful information. Thank you for sharing.
Mmm I ❤ basil! I’ll have to try the variegated one!
Basil is one of my favorite herbs
What variety is that smaller Basil close to your left leg? :)
That's an African Blue Basil. It's a fantastic variety but would have preferred to grow in a much larger pot!
Yes that is one of my favorite plants ... !!!
Your Pesto recipe?

Last year I finally allowed myself to say that no, I’m not a huge basil fan, other than a few focused applications. But I do still grow it to have on hand, to add to mixed containers (especially the Dark Opal), and for pollinators. Lemon basil makes a nice tea, and it’s great to have Thai basil for cooking. This year I’m trying lettuce leaf just for fun. They grow so easily from seed, why not? Also, tulsi, holy basil, is growing.
Im the opposite, cant get enough. 30+ plants. Pesto, pad krapow, its all soooo good. Also if basil isnt your thang for pesto try any other green! Carrot, radish, nettles, etc
