For those who don't know what is Maggot Brain: According to legend, Maggot Brain was recorded in one take when Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had been told his mother was dead, Clinton instructed him "to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitar". -wikipedia
For everybody giving out about this being crap, make sure you actually find out what "Maggot Brain" is. It's a tune by Funkadelic which features incredible guitar playing. The original features Eddie Hazel but I recommend checking out the live version which was recorded later when Michael Hampton replaced Eddie. According to legend, Maggot Brain was recorded in one take when Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had been told his mother was dead, Clinton instructed him "to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitar".

I always knew Needles would make it as a musician
I would FIRE HIM!!!!

Unfortunately whenever I think of Flea, I think of Needles.

It's my absolute favourite guitar solo ever and it kind of blows my mind that it isn't referenced by guitarists all the time as an influential piece of playing.
Walshy the musician I'm familiar with the original. But that doesn't change the fact that this video and audio sucked ass.
Hey everyone, I know stuff
Walshy the musician it’s one of the most famous guitar solos of all times, but for the youngins yes, funkadelics older versions are a billion times better. I also recommend the version of cosmic slop from the hardcore jollies album - awesome guitar playing from Eddie hazel and others, and some of the most fantastic singing imho
Amen walshy. If u think it sucked you need to get a clue and give a 2nd watch. Its as fuzzy as he wants it to be and its a bass. Small piece of expression from a legend. I'll take it!
@@igiveuponhumanity9238 agreed. Had that guitar solo in my head for 30 odd years. shame flea didn't give it justice.
Never imagined Maggot Brain on a bass. Awesome.
I forgot i had this on 1.5x speed from a previous video and really thought flea had fallen off the deep end
Now that is what i call playing with feeling and emotion. An Absolute Legend.

Flea has done so much for the bass in his life, he can play whatever and however he likes.
As long as there is electrified deserts.
LMAO
I think you're the only one that gets it...
@@robotsobek8626 Well seeing how he took a 10 minute song and condensed it to two minutes and twenty seconds. I can see how thats possible.. Also the song was pure improvisation as you know, purposely out of key and off tempo..
@@robotsobek8626 the song is called maggot brain... Flea's not playing any specific part to it but his own style and interpretation of it.. Dont get me wrong this is one of the worst songs ever produced because its just straight instrumental gibberish..
@@robotsobek8626 it was a 2 minute 20 second flea version. His rendition of the shitty song. "Wrote" is a term id use loosely when talking about this... George was supposedly on LSD when he gave eddie hazel the motivation for the song.
@@robotsobek8626 lol oh see that makes sense.. This sounds like the "music" a man on high doses of hallucinogens would come up with.. lol hope you have a good night bruh
Searching up “flea maggot brain” is such a gamble but i’m glad I’m here
If this was ANYONE else besides Flea, there would be absolutely no likes on this video.
OG Loc ok pretentious asshole
Flea is just an absolute paragon of magic, talent, and love. Theres something about him that could never be replicated, he is such an amazing man and musician and he is so inspiring to me to make my own music and to just love everyone. Flea is one of my musical heroes and I truly hope to meet him one day.
Thank you. I had to scroll past a list of incredibly small-minded haters to get to this comment. It is appreciated as is Flea and as are you. Peace.
Toxic Potato then you don’t understand the song he’s playing either which is essentially a solo of self expression buddy
@@ethanpiper6221 you are so right 👌
@@ethanpiper6221 yeah, like I saw another comment say, music is self expression, we create music to get out our emotions (frustration, sadness, happiness) and by doing this, we're allowing ourself to destress and just forget about everything for a bit
Whatever..this was terrible. Any actual musician would recognize that. Heck, flea has recordings from three decades ago with better audio. As far as composition.. that's what maggot brain is supposed to be, jargon. Like abstract art.
"Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex and vital" -Oscar Wilde
Well said. I personally didn't enjoy this piece, but the fact that other people do suggests it's merit. Argument over it just reinforces the point. Art has no need to be inclusive, and often the fact that it is divisive can drive home points the artist was trying to make.
All of you guys should stop talking bout my guy flea like dat. He’s my boy.
people saying that this sounds like shit to them makes me feel like im from another dimension
You must be from the same dimension as Flea
most of the comments saying this cover sounds bad and flea cant play or improvise, which is totally absurd.
did y'all even hear the actual maggot brain song? the whole solo is about self expression and out of tempo improvisation. jesus, every damn 035-er insulting flea just so they can feel better 'bout their own shit playing.
I agree but the 035 joke is dead even just saying it is cringe
Richard Mack sounds like something a 035er would say ngl

Hey, you! Yeah, the one who's scrolling the comments section: I'm gonna trigger you by saying
I honestly dig the performance
VL T yeah I like the performance too people r being bitches about it for no reason
His words in the intro could not be more true. Flea is a wonderfully kind dude who exudes raw energy and dances to his own beat. He may look a bit intense, but underneath it all, he is a humble and sensitive soul.
You guys know he's riffing around with Funkadelics "Maggot Brain" right? It's meant to sound like a crazy mess, chill out and let Flea rip it.
Last time I listened to Maggot Brain (1 minute ago), it was actually pleasant to listen to.
You know that improvisation isn't an excuse for not having any clue how to play over 4 basic chords in E minor right
Even if that’s how it’s supposed to be played It still sounds like trash
WadddleDeee you're right man. flea sucks ass, you're way better than him, u were even able to call a chord, wow.
imma make a petition so rhcp can replace him with u
@@_ProTrax wait. i thought he made tons of albums and sold millions of records. You? oh wait. you are still trying to get 3 people to play with you for your moms birthday! i understand your salt now!
This is hauntingly beautiful
I know this guy is a talented bass player, but this performance was honestly just not good.
I agree with you, he is a really really good musician but this is just not quite good.
If you’re in a pop rock band (I use the name very loosely to cover RHCP) then you definitely want this guy in your band. He’s an amazing bassist for pop songs - does what a bassist should and even adds value to the music. But this is bollocks, agreed.
@Nick Costa Well yeah you can say so but then it sounds like a cheap getaway and sure the guy is great but at least i was expecting a little bit more.
most of the solo shit he does is just that. you probably think he's really good because everyone says you are supposed too. as a bass player of 44 years i'm not a fan
Nick Costa you have no idea what you’re talking about. He’s a great bassist for a pop rock band. This performance is crap though. There are dozens of bassists on just RUclips better than this.
first thing to come out of the chili peppers that i've actually enjoyed. this was fun thank you Flea :)

i like this a lot but i honestly don't even know how to defend it from other ppl
Haha no need to. The way he plays here matches the energy of the recording in my mind. Even if a bit all over the place
simply art, an incredible bass line showing not only how Flea's study and technique continue to evolve but also how the instrument is connected, I love his jams on the Red Hot and Fender was right to invite him
Simply terrible*
It's been 2 years since fender decided to release the recording of a jar of bees next to explosive diarrhea
Thanks to this video, after playing bass for just over a year, I can confidently say I can play a bass solo as good as Flea.
His playing here is pretty much incoherent and chaotic, but I'm pretty sure that's the point he was trying to be incoherent and chaotic. Flea is an amazing improviser, and if u don't believe you can just go watch literally any RHCP live performance.
Fender will give ANYONE a signature bass these days
Literally anyone.
