Those criticizing Flea simply don’t understand maggot brain
Maggot brain is a jam/solo piece about self expression, releasing all your emotions through your instrument.

This is a dude who’s spent 40 years making great music and perfecting his art, he knows what great music sounds like, he knows this isn’t that and he doesn’t care. @@Dildobagginses There's a difference between improvising good and bad. When you don't know what melody you will play and start taking random notes, it is not improvisation. That's how Flea often does. He has no view of whole theme as for example Frusciante has. Frusciante does whole single finished improvisation nearly always, that can be pushed into the record now. That is improvisation.

Music learning is weird. First you gotta learn to play simple, then you gotta master every aspect of your musicianship to play hard stuff, when you got beyond that point you're playing easily again and after that you can do pretty much anything you want because everyone knows you are great and it's just your form of expression. And that last stage is what all musicians fight for their hole lifes. And that is what makes it beautiful.

Okay, that might be confusing, but when I wrote that "you gotta master every aspect of your musicianship ship" I didn't necessarily mean learning music theory. Most of our favourite musicians didn't know shit back in the days. I wasn't clear about that. And I actually love simplicity in music like in Frusciante's "Before The Begging". It's just one shape, one set of notes for whole performance which is amazing musical and spiritual experience.

According to legend, Maggot Brain was recorded in one take when Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had been told his mother was dead, Clinton instructed him "to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitar".

@Nick Costa Well yeah you can say so but then it sounds like a cheap getaway and sure the guy is great but at least i was expecting a little bit more.

most of the solo shit he does is just that. you probably think he's really good because everyone says you are supposed too. as a bass player of 44 years i'm not a fan

Nick Costa you have no idea what you’re talking about. He’s a great bassist for a pop rock band. This performance is crap though. There are dozens of bassists on just RUclips better than this.
