one of the best rhythm players
this guys stuff inspired me as a kid all the way in japan!
Can u name any better?
@@SuperBNIZZLe714 yourself :D
I like he’s playing. Too bad he’s a dirty fash
@@LalisasToxicHusband Too bad you're as uneducated as they come.
You can't be a slouch and play galloping riffs that fast and razor-sharp. That is some of the best and tightest heavy metal rhythm guitar I've ever heard.
Schaffer has a fckin metronome in his wrist
Metronome wont stand a chance against him, he will melt metronome with his galloping ;))))))
So fucking tight. He is so right on when he says "every note counts, every stroke matters" When he slows it down, I think it actually makes a tighter, warmer groove. Brilliant rhythm player.
"for me it comes natural...that's the way I play" AMAZING!!!!
The best rythm guitarist🎸🤘🔥
James and Jon are the best riffers
Dave Mustaine would like a word with you
Jon has adamantium wrist!!!! his right hand speed is INSANE!!!! He is the master of METAL RIFFS!!!!
I would almost put Chuck first cause he invented so many ideas that modern guys use, But John plays like a well oiled machine, and dave is a legend at hinting chord progressions in the most amazing ways.
My dream come true! Schaffer did it! I aked him many times to record it!!
I've been an Iced Earth fan for years and when they slowed his playing down so I could see the mastery of his galloping playing I was amazed. But, and this is no insult to Jon and the incredible dedication to his rhymic guitar playing over the years, listen to Metallica's song "Disposable Heroes" and at 0:31 James Hetfield is certainly the inspiration for this kind of guitar work. Don't believe me? Search for early pics of Jon. You'll see him wearing a "Master Of Puppets" shirt. James started it, even though Jon reinvented it. And like I said at the beginning, I've been an Iced Earth fan for years and still am!
Of course he is! Jon was inspired by James and invented his own thing while he was at it. Just like James was inspired by Aerosmith and Black Sabbath and did his own thing. There's a lot of Iron Maiden influences in Iced Earth too by the way. Arguably even more than from Metallica. Maiden really uses a lot of gallops, especially on the bass.
That’s true! Jon is a hybrid of Hetfield and Harris. All 3 share: composer, lyricist, and gallop rhythms that are awesome!
no doubt inspiration!
Iced Earth is like early Metallica and the best of Iron Maiden morphed into the ultimate metal greatness
Just because of the RANDY RHOADS STRAP,
i love this man
The riff slowed down reminds me of something made by Slayer in Seasons In The Abyss
That right hand is a metronome. Proper chug since the 80s...
All hail the riff lord
That fucking picking hand, god damn.
Teach us how to play "Storm The Capitol" next!
this guy is good. Damn
Thank you for posting this! I love these guys!
damn he's right hand is tight! :P
That is some god tier rhythm playin
@joniiboy hetfield is also a monster rythm guitar player!
Jon got the exactly same voice like Matt... \m/ i love ID.. :p
Yes sir it's natural and that's why you are a guitar God
Anyone getting these recommended now that he’s wanted by the FBI
Any publicity is good publicity right?? 🤷♂️
yeah... that happened.
Yep. Looks like im blocking guitar world.

John Schaffer is an extremely underrated rhythm player. His right hand is not from the earth
Sure it is
It's from Florida
One of the best and tightest rhythm guitarists in all of heavy metal. I imagine he's going to have to do some serious woodshedding to get his chops back up to speed once he's out of jail and that incident at the Capitol building is behind him.
writing great songs with great structure and melody. that's pretty original in today's metal scene
@Symbton still no tripplets,
its gallop (1/8 1/16 1/16 or the other way round)
I'm happy with the fact that Jon is still doing what he does the best:playing awesome riffs, writing great music.I think James wasted his talent during the last 20 years for "experimenting" too much.
love that right hand
@Symbton no problem mate ;)
but tripplets are a cool thing aswell
Schaffer is the King!!!!
I'd add Jeff Waters to that list. He's one of the tightest players around.
The toughest part is to do the palm muting that clear while really chugging at that speed
thats one hell of a tone
Well, he's one of the best guitar players and riffs are amazing, but..I love his hair.
Epic tone man
Shaffer is the Lord Of The Riffs
Whenever I watch this,I feel like giving up guitar.GODDAMN IT
good old times.
@TheBanyanEmperor Oh I do appreciate any style that takes effort. Maybe I was reading out of context. I just hate when someone always one ups a metal player by saying something like, well Flamenco is harder
very very good
@joniiboy oh yeah marios iliopoulos kicks ass!
The man with the bionical right hand
@ToxicViper666 It looks like he is playing the gallop DUD, UDU, DUD, etc. The rhythm itself sounds like a repeating 16-16-8 gallop with the first 16th note on the beat at a BPM of about 200. That's what it sounds like to me anyway.
It's pretty freaking ridiculous.
The slow riff sounds killer! Maybe a re-recorded version of that song??
burning times has the best guitar ever
@TheBanyanEmperor Yeah but we aren't talking about Flamenco. Apples and Oranges.
Another true Patriot!
is the explorer the ultimate shape for metal rhythm or something?
FUKIN' AWESOME !!!
@AnthonyRF1996 ?! it doesent matter. if its 10 bpm its still slow
TIGHT !!!
It's so crazy similar to Metallica's Battery!! I mean the whole track!
Not really, only thing similar is the galloping that is almost whole track
Like not at all.
There's NOTHING similar to battery.
Slow version = Heaviest riff ever!
is he playing the gallop really with down-up-down up-down-up?! o.O or those it just look like that
He’s not “one of the best” - he is the best metal RHYTHM guitarist - his picked rhythms can not be touched & he does many full chords in between, not just power chords.
James Hetfield is better.
@@hinjurock70 maybe at writing riffs, but technically, I think Jon is better
@@lo3572
Possibly. But no Iced Earth songs are as fast as Damage, Inc and Dyers Eve.
@@hinjurock70 perhaps listen to Dante’s Inferno & Travel in Stygian? I find them much harder to play personally
@@lo3572
I'll check it out.
What amp is he playing through here?
1. John Schaffer
2. Dave Mustaine
3. Chuck Schuldiner
4. James Hetfield
5. Matt Heafy
My top 5 Rhythm players
DropdaLTDtoB put chuck higher bro
stop light dude stop overrating chuck he was fucking great but he got inspired by mustaine and hetfield
Right...He also has long fingers...
5.- Bjorn Gelotte :)
i don't like iced earth's music but this dude is tight as shit
Sounds exactly like the verse from Disciples of the Lie
@joniiboy Lol, show me the part of this riff Hetfield would'nt be able to play.
Hetfield??? We're talking about Iced Earth, NOT Metallica!! Stay focused people!! Otherwise, if you want to take about other guitar players, we'll talk about Dave Mustaine, Randy Rhoads, Angus Young, etc!!
The difference is Jon was very inspired by the record “ride the lightning”
Set the playback speed to 1.5 XD
+InnerTranquility sounds like something from night of the stormrider :P
barfyman362 lol yea :)
Iced Earth: How to Storm the Capitol
DUD DUD
I like gallops... trr trr trr trr ....
it's funny how EVERY Iced Earth riff has Gallops.
Sei avanti sul click.
Jon is Da Man!
Metallica who??
Yup, just underneath the snake P:
What do you mean with "Fuck Hetfield"?
Well, if you listen to some good flamenco players, you can hear truly the world's best rhythm guitar. But in metal, Jon is certainly elite.
either its playing the same video over and over or you keep saying work with a metronome. Well you are just mainly using the gallop (triplet more often im pretty sure I seen maiden and them play, unless you include the silence or the inbetween note((which isnt always there)), dunno how thats a gallop since a horse probably hits the ground 4 times but thats what they call it) . and thats from your love of iron maiden. And the timing is slight off from the album here and there, so id just say anyone who wants to learn to play work on the triplet. Thats really the hardest part to most of this is putting the triplet in between everything else then back to triplet, then off again. Probably harder for me than most cause I dont really play much maiden, but im sure everyone else do so it should be easy once you get that on/off down.
When a horse gallops, two of its hooves touch the ground at the same time and then the other two one by one, giving a total of three impacts. A triplet is something else, in a triplet you divide the beat in three equally spaced note. A gallop is usually played by omitting either the second or the fourth sixteenth note of every beat, but the beats are divided in four (not three).
"Slow"
👅
Yeah, but take a look at the Disciples of the Lie picking staff...
It kills me...
Haha, you wish!
DON'T TREAD ON SCHAFFER!
Amazing guitar player. Riffs in this vid are so Metallica though d: not saying it's bad thing.
So metallica? that`s not like metallica at all :p
Jone C Hoftun Hmm to me it sounded like that. I could easily imagine James riffing something like this. Of course this doesn't sound exactly like Metallica, but at least influenced by them, like many metal guitar players are.
metelidrummer Because he is playing a similar style?
Come on, thats idiotic.
I say:
Holy crap > Am I now influenced by god? -.-
It is only a guitar and Hetfield played on it. NO MAGIC, just technique...
dyinDream Is not d:
I could def see how you think it sounds like Pre-Black Album metallica
New instructional video: How To Violate The Capitol Building.
@joniiboy cliche fanboy
Main riff sounds good, but it's too similar to slayer's raining blood and metallica's master of puppets
masacrador1
How so? Maiden was doing triplet palm mutes before both of those bands, anyway. Triplets are common as hell.
+Skippy McStringStrum Maiden?? Thin Lizzy my friend.... ;)
I don't hear that at all
Incredibly solid player, but not totally original.
diabeticmonkey
I know it's been three years since you posted this but nobody else sounds like Iced Earth
Ummm you forgot about Iron Maiden and Metallica. Jon’s most influential bands
6 charges, what the hell where you thinking rioting at the capital?
Jon, how can I invade the Capitol and not to be arrested instantly?
Treason metal
Utterly devastating rhythm player. SO tight, articulate and aggressive.
