Personally, even though I have some basic plumbing and service engineer experience, I would definitely go for a replacement valve. They're pretty cheap, and a better opportunity to get the repair right first time, as a far easier option. Great video either way, Thanks!
Thanks for this. Sorts my elderly neighbours overflow drip but used a whole new ball valve and arm rather than mess around with washers and stuff. 7.50 from Wickes. Job done 👍
I stumbled upon these videos by pure chance and I'm slowly working my way through all of them. I don't need any help with plumbing issues, I just think they're hilarious!
Thank you for the advice to bend the ball arm - it worked! No more overflow issues. But I couldn't bend it across my knee - I had to use one of the rungs of a ladder to bend it.
Brilliant just what I needed. My plumber didnt bother bending it down after he fitted new float and charged me 80 quid still gushes out the overflow like a hose pipe, so I now know what to do, thank you for your help
am in africa with this old type of valve and mine just started overflowing and been searchign all over for solutions without success since many now r using latest mechanisms and when am about to give up boom i find this video. Many thanks mate. Greetigns from Zimbabwe
Great advice. All straight foward until I tried to get into the top of my tank in the airing cupboard. The clever chap who installed it has given me a good 2cm between top of tank and ceiling to do all this!! Great advice though Vince. I'll do this after I demolish the airing cupboard and ceiling....!
Thank you so much for this useful information. Our cistern was overflowing into the garage so I followed your video and changed the complete valve and bent the pipe for a lower level and it worked. Very much appreciated and cost £1.50 for the valve, what a saving. Thank you so much.
Many thanks mate. I'm going to have to remove and repair mine by feel as there's no room to even get my head in the cupboard with the tanks! (Not the best architectural / plumbing design!), so seeing what I need to do will be a big help. Clearly explained and well shot. Thanks again! G
Great video brother. So informative and to the point. Save me a few cents getting a plumber out to fix. I'm an electronic engineer but with your guidance I survived!... Thanks a million.
Many, many thanks for this. It gave me the confidence to tackle this job myself and despite it being slightly trickier than your demo (having to drill out the rotten split pin, for one) I got there in the end. Really clear and really helpful. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Just done mine for £1.50 cost for a repair kit from Toolstation. Mine was almost 40 years old so pretty limescaled up; glad I had a pick set to extract the crudded up parts and a razor blade scraper to remove the perished remains of the sealing washer without damaging the sealing faces. Could have just bought a new ball valve for a few quid more but where''s the fun in that? Thanks mate, wouldn't have attempted it without your video.
Cheers, man. Helped me out. The drip in one of the the overflow pipes, was actually from the float valve in the toilet, so thanks to your video on what to look for, I can fix it.
Fabulous....What is the small water tank for ??????? I had a drip coming through the bathroom roof & found that the small tank was overflowing over even beyond the overflow.Havnt had this issue in 17yrs SO What could causes this???????? Thank You In Advance 👍
Cracking video this mate, thank you for this. Absoloutely identified my issue and the fix looks like a simple if fiddly job - I've got some replacement washers on the way and I'll give the arm itself a bend as well.
Any videos how to replace a toilet cistern ballcock valve? My current one is an old leaking/lime-scaled part 1 with a part 2. Any advice/videos you could point me to? Thanks.
i was wondering if you have a gushing mains pipe you can't stop is it possible to put a push fit fitting on it or does the water make it too difficult?
Thank you for a great video. Can you tell what causes water to continually drip from the copper pipe that is positioned over the loft tank. Mine started this 2 days ago and just drips out overflow non stop. Does nt seem to matter if heating on or off. Thanks in advance for any response
Helpful vid. My overflow tank has just started dripping so I'm going to have to try and fix it under COVID lock down. I'll have to order a box of nozzles and washers off the internet... What is the proper name for the kit so I can order one? I see if any plumbing suppliers are open for collection only. I'll try just bending the arm as a temp fix.
Hi, I have 2 overflow pipes coming out of my flat. 1 is dripping. I can see that one is the overflow to the water heating tank. The cylinder tank below it doesn't have a plastic overflow pipe. I am confused as to where the 2nd overflow pipe goes to. It doesn't seem to be from the loo. Although the water inlet to the water tank is dripping, the water level was below the overflow level. Am I right in thinking that it couldn't be that dripping if the water level is below the overflow pipe? There is a set up in the kitchen connected to the heating but that links to an overflow pipe on the side of the flat.
How much would this job cost for a person? My overflow pipe has recently leaked, twice now, so I was wondering so that I have some idea when I contact a plumber.
Hi mate sorry to bother you I have a small trickle coming from a pipe that has a black thing on top of it with a small red dial, kind of looks like a spray paint cap, it the pipes that it sits on top of are at the side of my combi boiler, if you have any idea what that may be can I just tighten it? Or leave it well alone for a professional?
Hi there i have fitted a side entry fill valve, there doesnt seem to be sealing washer on the inlet union pipe, is there supposed to be a fibre or rubber washer, it weeps a bit i have put a load of ptfe tape round ot, also when it fills up there is a horrible groaning noise for about 15 seconds.....any advice Please Fred in Essex.
My loo has the same type of valve as you have there a 'PEGLER FLOAT VALVE. ' They use the same on the header tank as on the side inlet on toilets then ? The only difference with my one is the ball float arm makes contact with the end where the needle valve sticks out and then pushes in. Are these a 15mm or other fitting? ( my one is brass). It looks as the inlet pipe fixes internally to the valve as its a side entry valve. Have to say that looks like too much hassle to take apart.
The water in my cold tank is coming out a lot slower than that , would this effect the electric shower ? It's broke a few times , maybe there's not enough water coming through to go through the shower and it's burning out ? I really don't know. Any information would be helpful , thanks
My cistern is leaking into the overflow and my ballcock arm is plastic and doesn't bend. Any tip for this before I take the whole thing apart like you did?
Hi I had a same problem and after changing a valve I am have Airlock kind of noise when water is filling in the tank. Can u pls guide how to clear airlock
followed all the instructions but my ball valve inside piston is brass and the washers in the kit I bought were too big!!...I assume they are for modern plastic cartridges?
Hi James 🙋 Please can I pick your brains? I cut the water off yesterday but it's still dripping...is this right? I thought it might stop once it was below the overflow level. I can't afford to fix it at the moment and just need it to stop dripping until pay day. In my younger days I would of tried to get in the loft but now....well maybe not ☺👵 Many thanks. Von...
Hi mate . Ive just had a new white plastic overflow pipe installed .The pipe goes from the attic tank out through the wall .Can you tell me if the pipe needs a sealant or siment style product applied around the pipe and surrounding brickwork in order to prevent rain water soaking in through the outside wall brickwork. cheers.
Hey so as i am browsing for some videos on the matter, as i have an issue with my float valve, i just can't find anything helpful, you see mine is newly installed and it still doesn't prevent the tank from overflowing, and i have no clue why, any ideas?
if the float valve is not at fault, it could be the expansion pipe leaking water above the tank, or the hot water cylinder is pin holed, so water could be backing up into the tank. is it the cold water tank or the central heating one?
Great video just what the internet needs, I did this job yesterday except I used a brand new ball valve available at screwfix £5-7 quid depending on type, I thought it may be useful for viewers to know the alternate cost if they don't fancy refurbishing one as the plumbers refurb kit can be expensive for a one off job. I also tested the watertight sealing of the ball valve water inlet fitting to the tank after installation of the new ball valve by over filling the tank a little, I identified and cured a small leak down the side of the tank with a nip of the two large thin nuts before big problems occurred! Its very likely I disturbed water inlet fitting when struggling to loosen off the old corroded ball valve and caused the leak! Fortunately I took my time and checked things over and tested everything is good before climbing out of the loft. Do be thorough and it pays to take your time is my advice to DIYers!
Great vids here however I think I will leave mine to the experts. Last time I attempted a water job. My nan woke me up at 1am wanting to know why there was water comimg through the light fittings downstairs haha.
Alvin Ashman Yes you can. That’s exactly how I repaired mine. Failing that a new valve and ball will only set you back around £7-£10 and it’s far easier to replace the lot!
Can you not just get a replacement valve? That would be the easiest , well for me at least. I tried bending mine down more but after a year its leaking again.

Just replaced our ball cock but it still will not shut off. The length of the arm seems too short to bend, do you know how long the one in the video was?
would it be easier to just buy and replace the entire FOV? I know your showing how to repair for the video but in another situation could you replace the whole thing and just charge the customer.

Clear and precise. Only criticism is that you didn't put anything down on customer's carpet to avoid staining, otherwise great

soviet toilets always had this style water supply nozel - a little metal peace with a long thin bent arm with big plastic ball on the end.
What size was the float valve incoming line, 3/4 " ? Nice video chap.

Quality vid! Nice one for that bud!
Unfortunately my header tank is tight up against the roof space so access to the ball valve is just a couple of inches.
How do you stop overflow pipe dripping on combination boiler ?
+Ginger Lewis There isn't one. Check our video on high pressure relief valves,
