The Chevy HHR SS Panel is one of the strangest modern cars in existence. Today I'm reviewing the HHR SS Panel, and I'm going to show you the quirks and features of the Chevy HHR SS Panel -- a high-performance panel van. Then I'm going to get it out on the road, drive it, and tell you what it's like.

*THIIIIIIISSSSSSS*
hey Doug! Big fan !
I enjoyed it so much like all your other videos!
These videos are all prerecorded
Love it! I'd rather see videos like this, or the dustbuster oldsmobile minivan than the latest supercar.
Imagine having very rare, one of 200 cars in the world and its THIS car
Just sell this piece oft poop rare but why? Its the US Version of Fiat multipla just an ugly fugly duck
I would rather have a Honda CiviC
having this car would be pretty cool, i wouldnt mind it. at least its different
Simba Fishtigre and the fiat is just as ugly, same with the Mini Cooper cargo version 🙄🤷🏼♂️
@@kitecattestecke2303 Oh come now, nothing compares to the level of ugly that is the Multipla.
Living in germany, I had to turn down the volume immediately. I didn't want the neighbors to hear someone yelling "SS" all the time.

“Designed to rival the PT Cruiser”
A round of a applause to GM for thinking that the PT Cruiser was good enough for a rival...
Oh you know that they make worse. They create Pontiac Azteck. A rich civilisation is dead twice.
People were super excited when the PT first came out. Remember, their was NOTHING to get excited about in the late 90s. The impala SS was gone, we had nothing that was nice to look at and practical.
@@tomm1109 NOTHING to get excited about in the late 90s?? What?
PT cruisers sold like hot cakes for a few years
right????
Imagine camping out in the back of this van, the windows are already blocked off, an outlet is back there, and obviously, the seats are already gone with storage underneath. I want it now
Dude this thing would be an OP stealth camping rig.
@@Matthew-oj2mq frfr i wanna get my hands on one of these now, doubt theres any near me
Try to find an aztek that still has the tent. They came with a tent attachment that extended off the back of the hatchback turning the car into a camper basically. A crappy camper.

"it's the SS!" yeah, don't drive that in Germany. 😂
They probably renamed it for the European market.
@@charliekahn4205 I seriously doubt this car was marketed in Europe at all.
This wasn’t sold here in Europe as far as I can tell... GM instead badge engineered a large Panel Van from the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance as well as a smaller one before selling off their European operations to Groupe PSA which replaced their offerings with a badge engineered version a Fiat, Puegot, Citroen, Europe only Toyota van
@@Mandarin9900 HHR was sold in Germany. But rather not panel van.
@@charliekahn4205 they only updated the font, to make "SS" more zig-zag'y.
I've had a 2009 HHR panel for 5 years, and didn't know about the hidden hatch release. The last time my battery died, I resorted to attaching a battery starter/charger under the hood, in order to get the hatch open. lol. Really enjoyed the video. Great car too. My non-ss version is ridiculously reliable.
To answer some of the questions. This is my car.
It's not finished on the detailing because Doug showed up earlier than I expected. I was still working on the interior.
There's an accident in the car's history and the driver door was repaired and repainted.
The tape is covering US Navy Base access stickers. I was instructed to cover them up.
The original engine was the Gen 1. This has the gen 3.
The door buttons only work in park.
The front bumper has an intercooler. That's why it sticks out so much.
The snow scrapers are because I used to live in Washington and I didn't know that he was going to open those compartments. Also why the cleaning stuff is still in there.
Yes I daily it. Yes I haul stuff in it.
HHR stands for Heritage High Roof. It's a tribute to the 50s Suburban.
I have a base HHR, almost bought a manual ss panel. I always wondered what Doug would have to say about it. Thanks for giving him the chance to review it.
You should have broke out the tape measure on him. 2020 biggest mystery if hes 6'3 or 6'4!
Congrats on the review. You just upped the value of your car!

@@kylefowler5082 It was a huge list of quirks. I'm not surprised that he missed a few. I wish he'd show the built in g meter. If people were thrown by launch control that would've made their heads spin.🤣

Apparently the San Diego area has at least one of every vehicle ever made for Doug to review.

Gotta love that interior. Bulky GM plastic from 10 years ago is unmistakable. But I must admit that little screen is dope 👌
You gotta check the cam phaser angle and set it to stun before you engage launch control
That screen looks so tacky!
It's way too small for the recess it was supposed to go in, what the hell were the designers doing?!
I was thinking the same my 1999 Corolla interior is on par with that lol though its a little more fragile.
that screen is actually a rare option in the this and newer turbo cobalts (08-10) its called RPD display
Here's one of those cars Doug talks about how he reviews knowing they probably won't do too well, but he just can't resist because of how quirky and cool it is.
I fully support this type of content.
Those are the videos that end up getting the most views
I don't really think this is one of those cars. If anybody knows what sleepers are, they know what the Chevy HHR SS is. It's a quirky take on a pretty popular sleeper. A car that you're talking about would be like some weird econobox from the early 90s, not this.

Do you live in the San Diego area? Edit: asking to check if it is in the slight chance the same one in the video.
Can you take a photo of it? Maybe put a Imgur link here?
Its rare if it is the van type + the high performance type

The "trunk" storage under the plastic lid in the back is exactly the same as the regular HHR passenger models. So is the hidden hatch release Doug geeks out about. Every HHR has the same thing it's not just the panel trucks.

When I worked at Chevrolet i had one of these I used for a parts runner. It was a lot of fun. I didn’t know it was rare. And yes it was the SS Panel
Just a few observation but some features in rear cargo area kept over from the passenger car config are likely there for a good alternate reason despite no passenger seat in the back. The manual door handles are for if a employee/helper is in the back and the door is shut on them so it's a safety thing. That allows then to exit even if they lack the keyfob or can't reach the door lock buttons in front driver/passenger area. The rear map lights would possibly be useful if your loading/unloading something or otherwise doing so something in the rear at night where extra light is needed.

Re: plastic moulding to unlock the trunk
4th gen subaru outbacks have that. If the battery dies or wiring to the trunk fails, you can remove a small plastic cover on the inside of the trunk to reveal a switch. This switch becomes a manual lock/unlock switch, and the handle outside the car functions normally.
It's not as hidden as the one in the HHR, though.

I have a 2009 Chevy HHR LT1 Panel. Meaning it has the deleted rear window, but still has normal rear doors with windows and rear seats that fold down. It also has the 2.4 liter. We bought this car so we could easily put the dogs in the back and still fit the family in it. It's in really good shape, just needs new front struts, tire pressure sensors (waiting for next tire change) and sway-bar couplings all which I plan to do soon.
Guess I should feel honored that that I saw one of these things where I work. It was a manual and everything. It was owned by Hunter Engineering Technicians and was being used as a work van. It had sweet looking Brembos on the front.
This is perfect for the vanlife crowd for urban stealth camping.
I’ve wanted one for camping for sure.
No, way too small. A minivan would be the limit in size
04dram04 my girlfriend and I just went camping for our anniversary and slept in her Crosstrek. Same size as this. It’s not spacious but definitely doable. We’ve slept in her car many times.

I emailed Doug last year to see if he’d like to review my HHR SS. Long shot, I know. But, I figured it was quirky enough that he’d at least consider it! He actually emailed me back(!) and said he’d be interested, but was swamped. I’m in the Midwest, so the logistics would have been tough. He couldn’t do it, totally understandable. I couldn’t believe he actually got back to me, so that was pretty cool.
I have a red ‘08 with a manual and the LSD. It’s the not the panel. Mine has a tune but other than that it is stock. It’s my daily driver.
I don’t even like HHRs, but I LOVE the SS version. I think it’s bonkers that GM actually made these things. The amount of engineering that went into them is actually kind of astounding when you remember it’s a freaking HHR. It has launch control and a no lift shift feature that is way more fun than it aught to be. It’s weird and fun and I love it.
Also, I should mention that just because my car is technically “rare” I’m not delusional; I definitely know it’s not super sought after lol

Doug has the best type of energy man. You can tell he really loves doing what he does.
I loved my 06 HHR was a very reliable car! Good gas mileage only broke down one time! Bought it used with 35k on it had it until last year and only had regular maintenance on it. It's still running like a champ! And for a GM that's pretty darn good!!
It's so quirky and rare, I kinda want one! And yeah, they would make a good delivery/work vehicle.
Doug seems surprised that people might want a light in the back to see the cargo. Especially since there’s no windows.
Pretty sure his point is more like why leave back map light switches if it's a cargo area, either don't install side lights at all or don't install switches and turn them on with the main light.
Why spend money developing a new part when you got a light fixture that already fits the hole already might as well use the one you’ve made already
Lol
I LOST IT when it had launch control 😂😂😂
I've always loved these. I priced them out a couple times but never pulled the trigger on one. And now I wish I had.
Due to no sliding doors, this is a panel wagon as opposed to a panel van.
It's a really half-baked effort at a van. The side doors don't open wide enough to be useful, there is no load restraint behind the front seats, and the rear is full of awkward bits of moulded plastic sticking out all over so you cannot use the space efficiently. What an abortion!
Something: is weird
