My mom was a teenager when these Olympics were going on. Unfortunately she couldn't afford to attend any of the games, nor this absolutely amazing Closing Ceremony. I remember her telling me stories of how happy people were during those two weeks in Los Angeles. People from all across world came to LA not only as tourists but also as friends and family that set aside their differences in the midst of past, present, and future turmoil, all in the name of bonds, strength, and love. I hope to take her personally when the Olympics return in 2028. See you in LA everyone.
I remember watching it when I was in elementary school. Watching the closing ceremony of the LA Olympics, I was so excited that the Olympics were being held in Korea, where I was born and raised, and it was not a dream but a reality. It feels like it was just yesterday. 40 years have already passed, I'm 50, and the 33rd Olympics opening ceremony in Paris in 2024 is just around the corner. I can't believe how fast time has passed.
I was in the Olympic Choir. I remember my mom telling me she saw me on TV. I watched some videos and never saw it until this one. I am on the right side of the screen (for only a few seconds) with the long side ponytail. (2:09:00)
I now realize the reason why you were told to leave the stage at the end of the ceremony, when you and the choir were singing "Consider Yourself", a 6/8 ditty from the Broadway musical "Oliver Twist". The PA announcer and safety personnel realized that from all of the can-can dancing you did on the temporary stage risers--the hopping and the jumping--made the staff worried about a "crash disaster" on the risers. So the singers were told several times by PA announcements to leave the risers. At first, they refused to leave the risers but with the warning of something dangerous if the singers failed to comply, the singers finally complied and also the other singers. They exited the risers, and the danger--that would have happened to you and the singers---were finally averted.
The part where Lionel Ritchie was performing was foreshadowing. When the Games return to Los Angeles 44 years later in 2028, breakdancing will be an Olympic sport.
We have to go through the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics first, but watching this makes me excited about what LA will be bringing us again after 44 years of waiting when 2028 will eventually be around!
Man the 80s were fabulous in my opinion. The Los Angeles Olympic Games had a lot of pregame jitters and worries as to whether or not anyone would watch or be interested or if they would be successful. Boy they knocked it to the moon . The games were sensational. The music of John Williams was infectious and upbeat as were the pastel Southern California color scheme and of course the glitz , glamour and sunny atmosphere and disposition of the volunteers, sportsmen, athletes, and everyone involved. They were an terrific memorable unforgettable exhilarating extravagant experience that hopefully can be revisited and replicated once again in the most iconic true Olympic venue on Earth, the Los Angeles Olympic Memorial Colosseum .
So, very well expressed. I was there and completely agree. The John Williams fanfare is now synonymous with the Olympics. It's a beautiful piece of music. I still get goosebumps hearing it.
This is what an Olympic ceremony should be. It should be-all about honoring the great athletes from all over the world and the cultures of the various countries. I wish it was still this way. Now it's all about shock value and creating controversy.
It's still about honoring athletes. There's no controversy, just people looking for things to get angry about when it's not THEIR country hosting. There was no controversy this year except from a small handful of people misinterpreting another country's culture - again.
I have watched Olympic games since 1968. To me, this was the most memorable Olympics of all even though a lot of countries boycotted it. The athletes, the music, the ceremonies. These Olympics were so well run they ended up making a profit of $225 million dollars. The only Olympics to make a profit.
1:54:23 Here's the timestamp if you want to see Lionel Richie perform "All Night Long (All Night)" at the closing ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympics.
And later on, the announcer begging the athletes to get off the platform because they were all crowding onto the platform, jumping up and down and dancing, and it wasn't built to hold that much weight. Fortunately the athletes were all herded off before the platform collapsed!
I think the pyrotechnics company in that event had about 1,000,000 or more aerial shells for their different short-term firework display celebrations to celebrate the past summer Olympiads in history including the 1984 Los Angeles in these remarkable closing ceremonies.
The final aerial salute to the Olympic athletes had - I guessed it - 60,000 or so firework blasts for their biggest grand finale of all for 4 minutes of explosions.
Yep - Mary Lou Retton! I fell in deep love with her as I was so elated when she did her life-changing vault in the all-around and got the perfect 10 to win the gold, under a gymnastics coach who probably taught Nadia Comanici....maybe.
There had to be at least 2,000 people who worked on the 1984 Games Of The 23rd Olympiad. Most of them long time ABC West Coast staffers. I wonder how many NBC staffers will work the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
I thought it was very apt that the wonderful Richard Basehart read a piece about the dying light and the ever lasting light as he was to die a month later, God Bless him 🙏 ❤

No it was boycotted by the Soviet Union because USA organised the boycott of Moscow 1980 because the Afghanistan invasion by the Soviets and LA 1984 was the Soviet Union saying “well if you’re going to Boycott our games we are going to Boycott you back” it had nothing to do with the break up of the Soviet Union in 1990’s because the Soviet Union in 1992 was represented by a unified team compromised of athletes from those countries
