It shows the flaw in carelessly abandoning old disciplines for new tech advances. I have always thought that was a major flaw in our societies. Learn to embrace the new; but, never forget or let fade the fore knowledge that got you to the new advancement in the first place.

Throughout the whole movie, he struggles to show his obvious gratitude to these people for all they've done for him because he doesn't know how. Here, finally, he can show it by doing what he does best; waging war. For the first time in his life, he fights because he CHOOSES to do so.

@@robwalsh9843 Agreed. It's realistic he would show almost no emotion or be confused by outward displays of emotion. He's been raised to believe that those things won't benefit a soldier, so he'd have severe emotional repression as a result. He'd also have trouble adjusting to the real world and being able to act/respond socially as all he's known is war. The critics didn't have a clue. This is how someone raised to be a child soldier would act.

Throughout the movie, you seem him stripped of his old life and surrounded by peaceful people with barely any weapons, and the weapons they do have are garbage. After taking down three of those soldiers and taking their gear, you could see Todd's instincts kick in and see an almost emotionless glee in him to be back to business

I know this comment is years old.
But I think the idea is that Todd has found some emotional attachment and doesn't want to endanger the lives of the people he has come to, in a sense, love. Hence why he says soldier deserves soldier because he views the people within the settlement as civilians and doesn't want them risking their lives just to die.
However that's all just my opinion. Great movie nonetheless.

This was an awesome film that remains highly under-rated. I once read one critic who, I think, nailed the analysis very simply. He said that this was a simple popcorn flick of the type that would normally go to someone like Jean Claude Van Damme and be passable fare that gets immediately forgotten. The fact that they put a great actor like Kurt Russell in it, who dove deep into the role and played it straight the whole time, elevated the movie beyond what it should have been. Absolutely right.

As striking as Todd's, "Soldiers deserve soldiers," is, the need to explain it to Sandra is just as crucial to the scene. Connie Nielsen does an excellent job of conveying Sandra's confusion with just her facial expressions. Sandra understands hardship; she understands how unfair life can be. But she only understands the capricious whims of fate; not the deliberate, calculated violence of war. She doesn't understand why they can't help, why Todd cannot permit them to help. All Todd endured was so that civilians would never have to. To allow civilians to fight invalidates Todd's entire existence; it is why soldiers deserve soldiers.

Unlawful combatants would mean that they have no protection under the Geneva Convention. We have this book in our army, its like "soldiers rules of conduct" or something like that in english. That book didn't have ma'am or anything like it when I was in the army. At the time girls didn't yet have the opporturnity to join, that came several years later. But, the impossible happened during my service, a woman became the minister of defense. She visited our base and I had a job to present our unit to her. When I addressed her a "sir" I thought our unit commander (a really grumpy old major) who was standing beside her would pop a vain in his head, his eyes were bulging out of his head and all. ;) She didn't react at all, like it was business as usual. I was sure that I would get penalties for it and I was ready to defend myself with the rules in the book. He never said a thing but later on sent me to the reserve officer school. So, I guess he also realized the predicament I was put in in such extraordinary situation. 👍
