Absolutely loved your perspective on the f/4 zoom lenses! It’s great to see someone highlight the practicality of lightweight gear without sacrificing versatility. I’ve always preferred the flexibility of f/4 zooms, paired with primes for low-light situations, rather than lugging around heavy f/2.8 lenses everywhere. Your video really validated my approach. Thank you for sharing this!

took a chance on getting this lens as I have the Sony 23-70 when it came out and have not regretted it. Love this lens and as you’ve mentioned, if you do need a faster lens for low light then you can always change !! Very happy with it
I haven’t taken the 20-70 off of my camera for almost a year now. I still have my sigma 24-70, which produces better photos and has better contrast, but with that lens I would occasionally need to switch over to an 18mm for wider shots. Most of my video work is stopped down to f/4-f/11 anyways, so there really isn’t much of a downside to the slower aperture. It also works for near-macro. Just an incredible video lens overall, and weighs half as much as my 2.8 standard zoom. It doesn’t cure my gear acquisition syndrome, but it is effective treatment.
I will say that if I ever had to do high frame rate video in low light I’d maybe switch over, but filming everything at 24fps, you really don’t need more light. 1/50th of a second exposure lets in a ton of light
Thanks for watching! The perfect lens for me would probably be a 20-105mm f2 but that thing would be impossibly large so I'll gladly stick with the 20-70mm instead... 😄
I subbed and rang the bell seeing beautiful video through out the video and a very pleasant voice over covering a subject I find fascinating was well worth it keep on creating great work
Great review and your video is full of art. So dope. I was convinced with your Tamron 2.8 lens. Hence i went to buy 24-50mm lens. I already had this 20-70mm and later had PZ 16-35mm. These are all great lenses. But i need to experience the 2.8 lens and i'm grateful with your two reviews on Tamron. May be once i'm done with FE 24-50mm i would go back to 20-70mm. that ultra wide and extra reach are really versatile for run n gun situation. Thank you for inspiring me.
bro that is crazy awsome video. I am so charmed by how you making sound and text title on this. Could u share more how to make the text title like yours
Thanks man! Grab a nice bold font, add a duplicate layer of the title below the first one and use a gaussian blur effect to create the glow. I also add a film damage overlay set to the Screen blend mode as well as a gate weave effect to make the titlecards move ever so slightly.
Thank you. I am not a video shooter so my needs are different. I’ve recently started using the two newer Sony compact C bodies of the A7CII and A7CR for travel so smaller lenses have attracted me away from my GM primes and GMII holy trinity. I consider the 20-70/4 G but decided to try the newer 16-25/2.8 G and 24-50/2.8 G instead. Different trade-offs but I still may try a 20-70/4 G since I like its flexible focal range. T also looks ideal to pair with the FE 70-200/4 MACRO G OSS II. Another smaller size, for its focal range, telephoto zoom. All great offerings. Take care.
Hey thanks for sharing! I've also been thinking about the 70-200 f4 Macro for a while now. Currently I can't justify a purchase but it stays on my list. :) I'd say the 20-70 is absolutely worth a shot, should you need a bit more reach during your shoots. But definitely get some good hands on experience with the other two lenses first. 🙌

Astounding work and thank you for making a video on this that no one talks about. Gonna use extra money for lighting gear, a rig/ gimbal, and hopefully get another cam solely for video or low light. This was a great video and kept my attention the whole way through. GREAT JOB. LOVED IT. Also... I didn't even know that the 20-70 f4 lens existed. Thank You.
Love the way you made this video, great job. I recently got Sigma 24-70 mark II and I love it so much. the bokeh and low light capability is two big factor that separate smart phone vs mirrorless cameras especially on social medias which uploaded videos low bitrate won't show that much sharpness of cameras. so I decided to have F2.8 on my priority for choosing a zoom lens. maybe I'd buy a 85 f1.4 in future as well.
Zweifelsohne auch ein großartiges Objektiv! Habe lange zwischen den beiden geschwankt. Dann geht's einfach nur darum die eigene Arbeit und die eigenen Anforderungen einzuschätzen. :)
I've heard about this lens just recently. Very curious to hear what you think. If you can affoard to have a larger and heavier setup, this might be a great choice!
I have the 24-70 f4 carl Zeiss. I just needed something for interview shoots and few other stuff. Sometimes i use my friend's 24-70 2.8 and like the more sharpness and depth it adds but most of the everyday stuff gets covered.
Thank you very much! Depth is all about layering. I often compose my shots in a way where I have a visible foreground layer. This could be people, plants, even furniture. Lighting is also very important since it gives people or objects dimensionality. Best part is, most of this light is... well... free. :D
Thanks for the video. I have been looking for a zoom range lens, the only other lens that I am still looking at is the Tamron 17-70mm 2.8 lens which is cheaper in price still. I am thinking of selling my other 2 lenses and keeping the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for closer shots and getting a zoom lens. 👍
You're very welcome! An important thing to note is that the Tamron is an APS-C lens while the Sony 20-70 is full frame. Depending on your current camera setup this might make the decision easier for you.
@@saxophonicmusician If you don't intend to eventually move over to a full frame camera I would advise against this as FF lenses are usually significantly more expensive
Amazing video Marcel you definitely earned my sub!!!! Question, how would you compare this to your other video about the tamron 20-40mm f/2.8? Wondering if I should get this 20-70mm f/4 or get the tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 with a like 85mm prime?
Thanks a lot friend! I really like the Tamron because it's tiny and perfect for travel. However, if you're asking me about professional use I'd recommend the 20-70mm f/4 without a doubt. The 20-70 has significantly better auto focus, smoother bokeh, way better stabilization (due to being a first party lens), it's still small and light and offers a more useful zoom range for most situations. That said it is clearly more expensive. If you can afford it or plan to make money with it, the 20-70mm will likely suit you better. If you want something small for travel or for fun, the Tamron is a good option.
Welcome! My process has changed a lot. It involves Split Toning, a lot of Curve Adjustments, using LUTs and generally pulling the exposure of the images way down. Bit too complicated to explain it quickly haha
How did you get those macro shots with that lens and the clear image zoom? I have some coins I would like to shoot, but I can't get that close unless I use my phone.
Hey Blaine! Some of these shots were created with Close-up diopters and others with the more professional NiSi Close-up lens. If you're interested in learning more you may wanna check out the detailed comparison video on both products I recently did.
genuine question. Is the 24-105 just as good as the 20-70? and would you choose the 24-105 over the tamron 28-75 considering you took the 20-70 over the tamron. i’m so close to buying either of these lenses so i need opinion
All three lenses are great in my opinion. Personally I vastly prefer the 20-70 over the other two though. The image from the 24-105 isn't as sharp as the 20-70's and it has worse performance when it comes to chromatic abberation. The 20-70 also has superior AF performance, is smaller and lighter. Both Sony lenses have superior image stabilization compared to the Tamron but the 24-105's optical steady shot isn't necessary for the work I do, so it's not a factor for me. Like I've said in the video, the 20mm at the wide end is a game changer for my projects since I don't need to get a dedicated wide angle lens and can basically do almost anything with my 20-70. The 24-105's zoom range also isn't as clear of a winner to me since I can crop in on the 20-70 with clear image zoom. Hope this helps!
THE ONLY BENEFIT OF G MASTER LENSES IS IF YOU ASK BIRDS THAT YOU HAVE GOT GMASSTER LENSES TO TAKE PICTURES IN THE JUNGLE THEY WILL START POSING IN FRONT OF YOUR CAMERA...
I shoot in a PAL region so I am only using it at 100fps but there are no issues at all. Haven't encountered anyone who said this was an issue at 120fps so I'd bet you're gonna be good 🙌
Exactly. Depending on the project I may also use a modded Helios 44-2 or Super Takumar 28mm vintage lens but I've decided to minimize my lens collection as much as possible.
Okay so I've been looking around online and apparently this lens isn't a true parfocal. For clear image zoom maybe it looks like that but for the actual zoom ring ive been seeing it go out of focus but the shift back to focus is very quick
Check Gerald Undone's review for this. If you have autofocus enabled while zooming even a parfocal lens may jump a bit, depending on the situation. Testing for parfocalness is done in manual focus. And my copy, just as Gerald's shows the same results. Hope this helps 🙌
@@MarcelGlas goated fr 🐐 I go watch. you shoulda said that in the vid bro, flame every single one of these creators just glazing details and regurgitating the specs. Greatly appreciate it brotha it’s tough out here
Well this is exactly the point I was talking about in the video, no? People are looking at their lenses out of context but if you own a slower zoom lens as well as a fast prime lens for low light shots, you can film just about anything. This doesn't mean that the zoom lens has to have a fast aperture as well.
I'm glad you were able to find gear that suits your needs, and it's quite obvious that you are relatively new in this occupation (that comment about watching movies is a glaring example) but you need to relax, dude. You "discovered" one of the most used focal lengths from one of the most popular brands, and the thing about Soviet lenses is widely known for a decent amount of years now. No need to be so over the top with your "discoveries". Because as time passes, you will learn more and more things, and when you get to a certain point, you will become aware that there is so much more to learn, so much that you don't know. The more i know, the more i realize i know nothing, that's how the saying goes. Point being, you made few findings that work for you, great. Don't let hubris get the better of you, as soon you start thinking how perfect your work is, that's the moment your decline starts. In this work, you can always do better, and there is always someone better.
Something in this video got you on an emotional level, else you wouldn't have taken the time to write a lengthy comment like this. Not sure what made you believe I view my opinions as facts or why I'd need to "relax" after offering an alternative perspective on gear which isn't driven by monetary gain, unlike the majority of filmmaking RUclips. Also not sure why you reiterate the word "discoveries" as if I had presented my points as some hidden truths. Then again, ironic to be accusing people of hubris while simultaneously implying you've got all the answers.
@@MarcelGlas It was a well intentioned advice, becouse I worked with people like you who got intengled in their own "greatness" and before you know it all that great turns to sh... but they cant't recognize that becouse they are sure they know everything. And judging by your reply that is path you have choosen. I felt sorry for you Kid, all that becouse you found one lens that works for you...and if you are able to read my point was excatly the opposite of knowing all the answers. Anyway do as you please.
@@cokrlicix I don't question your intentions, I question your tone. Assuming you've worked with "people like me" after having watched one video on the internet. Calling me "kid" or "feeling sorry for me". Once more, I'm not sure how you come up with these accusations of "greatness" but you've clearly had some sour experiences with people in the past which you now project on me.
I've heard varying reports on this. Watch Gerald Undone's review where he tested the lens for parfocalness. My copy performs the exact same during manual focus.

Hey Blaine! Some of these shots were created with Close-up diopters and others with the more professional NiSi Close-up lens. If you're interested in learning more you may wanna check out the detailed comparison video on both products I recently did.
I use the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4 on my Nikon D5500 and it's my most used lens
Great zoom range!
Why didn't you discuss Tamron 17-70 2.8??
Because it's an APS-C lens and not full frame ✌️
i got a 18-105mm f4 sony lens and its great
Bravo coaie , am privit pana la final…..se intampla rar treaba asta
genuine question.

🔥 video.
Thanks man!
Question: Does the same apply to Photographers?
In general, yes it does. However it is highly dependant on the type of photography you're doing so a general answer wouldn't be too useful
Great video. What would be good for an apsc then?
Thanks a lot! Unfortunately I don't have any hands-on experience with any of the APSC lenses so I won't give any recommendations
Totally agree 🤌
🙌🙌🙌
What do you think for an APSC camera like the A6700? Everyone is talking wonderful about the sigma 17-50 2.8 contemporary
Unfortunately I can't give you any input on the A6700. I've heard a lot of good things about it but never had the opportunity to test it myself.
THE ONLY BENEFIT OF G MASTER LENSES IS IF YOU ASK BIRDS THAT YOU HAVE GOT GMASSTER LENSES TO TAKE PICTURES IN THE JUNGLE THEY WILL START POSING IN FRONT OF YOUR CAMERA...
Is the Sony 24-105mm F4 Parfocal?
No, it's not. Just as the other competitors it will try to compensate with AF but results can be unreliable.
@@MarcelGlas Thank you!
Great video! Makes me more confident to get a 20-70 G for sure. All of information and feedback are helpful. Subscribe already, thx!
Thanks man! Sometimes we just need a little reminder that the gear we already have can be pushed even further 👏
20-70 is the best that can be!) 99% of shooting only on 20-70 and 1% on G Master fix
Totally agree!
Is the Tamron 17-50 F4 parfocal?
Unfortunately I have no hands-on experience with this lens. From what I can find it doesn't appear to be parfocal but I'm not 100% sure.
Dude you should more views in this video
Thank you!
does it lag focus when fx3 set to 120 frames
I shoot in a PAL region so I am only using it at 100fps but there are no issues at all. Haven't encountered anyone who said this was an issue at 120fps so I'd bet you're gonna be good 🙌
So its a 20/70 F4 and a 35/1.8 for you for videos. Cool.
Exactly. Depending on the project I may also use a modded Helios 44-2 or Super Takumar 28mm vintage lens but I've decided to minimize my lens collection as much as possible.
@@MarcelGlas tbh, add another camera plus an 85/1.8 and its a great photo and video using 3 light and small lenses sans GMaster
I use the 24-105, it’s good for 95% of the time.
Great lens for sure!
Greatly appreciate it brotha it’s tough out here
@@Johsua_v 👌😂
24-105 is stabilised, that’s really important for FX6 users.
Depending on the kind of work you do and whether you want a handheld look or not, this can be an important thing to consider, agreed. 🙌
1:02 😂😂😂😂
Me using the 24-70 GMII and when I tried 50mm 1.2 I wanted that for the light sensitivity... 4? no way!!!
Well this is exactly the point I was talking about in the video, no? People are looking at their lenses out of context but if you own a slower zoom lens as well as a fast prime lens for low light shots, you can film just about anything. This doesn't mean that the zoom lens has to have a fast aperture as well.
Wank level in the VO is off the charts. Visuals are pretty nice though.
You must be fun at parties. Thanks for the free engagement though.
no VC no ty :P imo the 17-70mmf2.8 is a much better value with VC
17-70mm is an APS-C lens though. Completely different case
Nah, the new 24-50 f2.8 is far better.
Care to elaborate on your statement?
I'm glad you were able to find gear that suits your needs, and it's quite obvious that you are relatively new in this occupation (that comment about watching movies is a glaring example)
but you need to relax, dude. You "discovered" one of the most used focal lengths from one of the most popular brands, and the thing about Soviet lenses is widely known for a decent
amount of years now. No need to be so over the top with your "discoveries". Because as time passes, you will learn more and more things, and when you get to a certain point,
you will become aware that there is so much more to learn, so much that you don't know.
You clearly didn’t get the point of the video. Maybe you should watch it again…
20-70 is not parfocal
I've heard varying reports on this. Watch Gerald Undone's review where he tested the lens for parfocalness. My copy performs the exact same during manual focus.
You have to be color blind in some way to find these colors even remotely acceptable for professional work.
Be my guest and tell my paying clients.
meh. GM primes way better imo.
I'm sure you have your reasons. The way you phrased this didn't exactly add anything to the discussion though.
