Davion is right. I don’t get how Nathan and Miles misinterpreted that scene with Billy holding off the Mind Flayer as an attempt to save his own life? He clearly sacrificed himself to save El, the Mind Flayer was going for Eleven right there. Look at the way that moment is framed. We’re shown a POV of the monster and it’s clearly looking and going after El, not Billy. To answer Miles’s question, we’re not shown Billy moving to his right or in front of El because his decision to save her is supposed to come off as a twist.
Billy was saving El, BUT he’s still garbage. What you go through should be understood as context for your behavior but is not an excuse or justification for it whatsoever.

Billy wasn't a good guy and he didn't really redeem himself imo, but he still sacrificed himself not only to save El but also to put an end to the Mind Flayer's control over him... And tbh that's still a respectable and admirable action, specially considering who he is. Cause yeah, Billy was a horrible guy, but he wasn't a killer and he never intended to become the Billy he was this season. Personally, I still hate his character. He probably would've never changed if all of this hadn't happened, but in the end he DID CHOOSE to save El and that's good.
I think he definitely would have become a better person. If his sacrifice for El wasn’t telling enough of that, then his final words of apology to Max were. It doesn’t negate what he’s done before, but the last time he’s received love was from a mother who abandoned him, and the next time he does at the hands of El... he breaks free from the Mindflayer’s hold gives his life for her. Just shows this was the key. Yeah, he may not have changed if he didn’t get possessed, but that’s not due to the possession itself, rather the fact that it led to El showing him love and affection. I’m personally quite sad we’ll never get to see Billy make it up to the people he’s hurt and mend his relationship with Max. Of course, I do understand you hate his character and that’s fine, I was just sharing my outlook I suppose.
It's kind of like shadow weaver's sacrifice in she ra. Still an awful person, but they did still sacrifice themself to stop a great threat and save everyone
I don’t know if you guys noticed but hopper kept like a hair band thing from his daughter who passed away from cancer and he always had it since season one season two he gave it to el and she wore it everywhere and in season three and when they were talking sitting down while holding hands the blue band was wrapped around both here hands together I think that’s a cute detail the shows puts in that most people miss. And milky reaction to the note Hopper left was real that was her first time reading it ever when they started acting so she was really crying. And I’m so excited for y’all to finally to be on season 4

I feel bad cause I usually agree with Nathan but Davion is right! No spoilers but you’ll see! Billy stopped the mind flayer from getting EL bc she snapped him back to reality. Remember what Billy said after she went into her mind, “ we have been building it for you”. The goal of the mind flayer was to kill El but Billy saved her, and the mind flayer finished him off to make sure he wouldn’t come inbetween killing her again
I think Nathan's whole argument about Billy just standing his ground bc he was mad and the technicalities with the camera angle completely eliminate the importance of the scene with El connecting to Billy's inner-child, like Davion was saying. Even if the Mindflayer was specifically targeting Billy bc it realized he was no longer controlled, Billy's actions can be out of both anger and self-sacrifice, it doesn't have to be just one or the other. Bc he essentially still saved El by holding it back and knowing he would be killed, and if he hadn't done that, El would've been killed by the Mindflayer before Joyce shut off the gate.

In regards to Billy; yes, he was abused and learned toxic masculinity + discrimination from his dad and therefore acted out that same way, and he should still be held accountable for those decisions. However, I don't doubt that if he'd survived this he would've changed for the better- he was only 18 and had time to fix his mistakes. People don't acknowledge the fact that a lot of time had passed between S2 and 3, and Billy kept his word and left Max, Lucas, and everyone else alone. Even in episode 4, Max showed that she was worried for Billy which implies that their relationship had at least improved, and she was no longer acting angry towards him like before. You can be mad at him for his past actions, but it doesn't diminish the weight of his sacrifice; the Mindflayer was only looking to kill El but Billy protected her which was his own choice to make after being controlled for so long, and it shows his true colors (if he didn't care about El he could've just tried to escape, but the fact that he cried after El connected with him and then waited for the Mindflayer to attack, he was obviously doing it for her, not bc he was mad at the Mindflayer)
The thing is that Billy did save El, that has been confirmed by the Duffer Brothers. The mind flayer didn't need Billy at that point anymore anyway, because El was there, powerless.. And she was the one it was after. I think that if Billy would have bolted the moment he snapped out of its control, the mind flayer wouldn't have given a sh*t. But Billy stayed and took a stand against it, that's why it went for Billy first

This episode was so good, yet so sad! Eleven reminding Billy of his mother and and having Hopper’s letter being read by him during that whole last compilation of scenes was so heartbreaking and beautiful. I can’t watch those scenes without crying. I also loved seeing El say “I love you” to Mike, proving that she did overhear him the first time. This is definitely one of my favorite seasons. Just under season 4. All the episodes are at least an hour if not longer next season and there’s so many wild and amazing moments. There’s also a few new characters who I can’t wait to see your reaction to.
It's like you're watching two different movies. Probably because you've got very different ways of looking at life, in general. This is the very reason that watching others react is so rewarding. I like that this series can be enjoyed by many. I never took that scene as billy protecting himself, but I can see why some people might.

They aren’t going to show you Billy moving prior to him blocking the Mindflayer, because you’re supposed to feel the same initial shock as Eleven did in that moment. It was definitely going for el. Billy wasn’t standing straight, he leaned in the way and caught the tentacle. He never wanted to be a murderer and he didn’t want those kids to die. He was conditioned by his father to act a certain way. It’s weird to judge people before you know their backgrounds. POS or not, if you’re okay with just judging someone and not trying to help them see the right way then that says a lot about you. He wasn’t being racist toward lucas, he was protecting max because of how his father would react to it. He had his own weird way of protecting her. He cared about her and she cared about him (obviously). the love he was showing max was the love his father was showing him because that’s all he knows. I agree with Davion wholeheartedly. just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean you get to yell and speak over him and shove your opinion in his face. he wasn’t saving himself, he was saving those kids. I’m also very confusef how this very simple scene was so misinterpeted here and even in the comment section??😂 The mind Flayer was after El, it’s sole purpose of existing was to take El’s powers and kill her, and it was just about to kill her with the tentacle when the gang started to throw fireworks at it. Then after that whole fiasco, El got through to Billy, and just before the monster was about to continue where it left off before the fireworks (kill El with the tentacle) Billy jumped in as a surprise and saved her. She even protected herself with her hands because the tentacle was coming straight for her. Like, before Billy jumped in it wasn’t even confirmed that El really got through to him enough, him jumping in and catching the tentacle was the revelation and the whole point of the redeeming scene. Billy was nothing to the monster, it’s El it was after, so there is literally no reason storytelling wise why the monster would have just went for Billy there. The point was that Billy broke through the control and did one final redeeming act to save El. Jesus

He had been abusing her for years. Yes he was abused. Yes that’s why he was abusive and violent. But that’s an explanation, not a justification. He tried to beat up a 13 yr old child because he was black. He targeted lucas because he was black. He was a racist. And that’s simply true. He was also abusive. That’s simply true. He used to be a good kid, sure, but he became a bad one. And he died before redeeming himself. He was a terrible person.

@@partlychach3700 I rlly think u may be misremembering the events. Billy did attack Lucas. He pushed him against the wall and was about to beat him up until Steve stepped in. It was very much confirmed by the writers, directors, and actors that Billy was racist. There is no denying that he was racist. It was said that he didn’t like Lucas because he was black. That’s the hard truth. U want to deny it because u like his character, but it’s quite literally canon. And it’s basic psychology that people have and continue to sympathize with their abusers bc they are manipulated. That’s her brother, of course she’s going to love him despite the abuse. That’s actually what prevents most victims of abuse from speaking out. But it’s said in season four !!SPOILER!! that she wished he was dead every night. That she wanted him to stop terrorizing her, and most of her grief comes from the survivors guilt she has. He did emotionally abuse max. And of course he was a product of his environment. But that’s not a justification, it’s an explanation. He had potential to be a good person, obviously, that’s what the whole sacrificial act was. But he died before he could. He may have been a good kid, but he became a bad person, and he died a terrible person too.
Fun fact the actors of Dustin and Lucas both used to work musical Broadway before doing Stranger Things and I think this was a fun way for the producers to showcase that lol also Billy is an interesting character- he’s created to be a bad person, not born but who was shaped by the violence & abuse of the early 70s & 80s; he was bad BUT he wasn’t a murderer. He didn’t want to kill people; & he didn’t want more to die because of him- thus giving his life to save El. Dacre portrayed that so well.
I didn't like Billy in season 2 but to me this was his season because it shows how he is now and he sacrifices himself for eleven and when he was dying he says sorry to max can't wait for your guys reactions to season 4 it's the best season
i don't think one action redeems his whole character even if he sacrificed himself to save eleven, plus the whole season was him being controlled by the mind flayer so the only time we've seen him be his true self was season 2 and the end of this season. there wasn't really a redemption arc in my opinion. billy wasn't a good guy, but he lost the chance to become one.

Billy was possessed this season, yes, but we saw him break through several times. All indicating that he was trapped in his body and really did not want to kill anyone. I really wish Billy survived and got the chance to make it up to the people he’s hurt and mend his relationship with Max, but alas...
This season had a very different vibe than the others for sure. It was a nice break from the constant darkness of season 2 while still having its dark moments. Murray went from being a reoccurring face in season 2 to one of my absolute favorites this season. Man has read two Byers like a book. Maybe one day, he'll read Will and complete the whole set. I felt bad for Billy. Not because he was a great guy. He wasn't. He sucked for a lot of S2. But you also see moments of good that shine through. He purposefully distanced himself from Karen so he wouldn't hurt her. He tried resisting the Mind Flayer both physically and mentally. His final apology to Max. I don't feel sad for what he was. I feel sad for who he could've became. I also feel bad for Will. The moment his life finally seems to go back to normal, he has to move away and leave all his friends behind. And then he gave away his D&D stuff because he only wanted to play with Mike and the others. That boy is so sweet. Speaking of Mike, I feel like he was a really good Leader for the first season. An amazing supportive best friend to Will for the second. But this was the first season where I felt a sort of disconnect to him. In the previous seasons, we got to see how he was feeling, or what he wanted to do. In S1, El was around, but his main priority was finding Will. In S2, he spends pretty much all his screentime with Will. And whenever he wasn't talking, his expression told us what he was thinking. But for this season, we only got to see his emotions on a surface level. He says that he loves El, but when she brings it up, he immediately denies having said anything. Once everyone leaves, he looks back at the Byers' house and then goes home to hug his Mom. And we've only seen him hug Karen one other time(when Will's fake body was found). So I think Mike is purposefully being emotionally and mentally hidden from the audience. But the reason for this theory is more of a S4 thing, so until next time.
If Murray reads Will the same way he read Joyce and Jonathan, I hope he does it privately 😬😬 that would be a cool full circle moment though, if he read him and then gave him some comfort and encouragement to be his authentic self. That was kind of his point with Joyce and Jonathan too - stop lying to yourself and just be real

I usually agree with Nathan, but he’s way off here about Billy 😂 Billy was reminded of the past by El, realised he needed to do something and protected El from the monster. Whether of not the monster went straight for him or not is irrelevant, because the monster was controlling Billy and realised it was losing him when he got his own mind back and therefore attacked him when it realised what he was going to do.
Finally ! Can’t wait for season 4 pls don’t take a big gap get straight into it otherwise you’ll lose the flow trust you’ll need the energy for season 4😂😂

With Billy dieing, it looked like he was sacrificing himself. It did want El but he turned his back to it and it knew. That's why he went for Billy, I think the reason he done that is because what El showed him. He knew he was a bad person and he knew what situation he and El was in. He didn't want The MindFlayer to hurt her, ig he did that to "redeme" himself. With what El showed him he felt sorry for what he did. The goal of the mind flayer was to kill El but Billy saved her, and the mind flayer finished him off to make sure he wouldn’t come inbetween killing her again
I think Nathan's whole argument about Billy just standing his ground bc he was mad and the technicalities with the camera angle completely eliminate the importance of the scene with El connecting to Billy's inner-child, like Davion was saying. Even if the Mindflayer was specifically targeting Billy bc it realized he was no longer controlled, Billy's actions can be out of both anger and self-sacrifice, it doesn't have to be just one or the other. Bc he essentially still saved El by holding it back and knowing he would be killed, and if he hadn't done that, El would've been killed by the Mindflayer before Joyce shut off the gate.

In regards to Billy; yes, he was abused and learned toxic masculinity + discrimination from his dad and therefore acted out that same way, and he should still be held accountable for those decisions. However, I don't doubt that if he'd survived this he would've changed for the better- he was only 18 and had time to fix his mistakes. People don't acknowledge the fact that a lot of time had passed between S2 and 3, and Billy kept his word and left Max, Lucas, and everyone else alone. Even in episode 4, Max showed that she was worried for Billy which implies that their relationship had at least improved, and she was no longer acting angry towards him like before. You can be mad at him for his past actions, but it doesn't diminish the weight of his sacrifice; the Mindflayer was only looking to kill El but Billy protected her which was his own choice to make after being controlled for so long, and it shows his true colors (if he didn't care about El he could've just tried to escape, but the fact that he cried after El connected with him and then waited for the Mindflayer to attack, he was obviously doing it for her, not bc he was mad at the Mindflayer)

The thing is that Billy did save El, that has been confirmed by the Duffer Brothers. The mind flayer didn't need Billy at that point anymore anyway, because El was there, powerless.. And she was the one it was after. I think that if Billy would have bolted the moment he snapped out of its control, the mind flayer wouldn't have given a sh*t. But Billy stayed and took a stand against it, that's why it went for Billy first

This episode was so good, yet so sad! Eleven reminding Billy of his mother and and having Hopper’s letter being read by him during that whole last compilation of scenes was so heartbreaking and beautiful. I can’t watch those scenes without crying. I also loved seeing El say “I love you” to Mike, proving that she did overhear him the first time. This is definitely one of my favorite seasons. Just under season 4. All the episodes are at least an hour if not longer next season and there’s so many wild and amazing moments. There’s also a few new characters who I can’t wait to see your reaction to.

It's like you're watching two different movies. Probably because you've got very different ways of looking at life, in general. This is the very reason that watching others react is so rewarding. They aren’t going to show you Billy moving prior to him blocking the Mindflayer, because you’re supposed to feel the same initial shock as Eleven did in that moment. If you saw him move before El shielded herself, it would just as easily be diminished. That’s the whole point.

It was definitely going for el. Billy wasn’t standing straight, he leaned in the way and caught the tentacle. He never wanted to be a murderer and he didn’t want those kids to die. He was conditioned by his father to act a certain way. It’s weird to judge people before you know their backgrounds. POS or not, if you’re okay with just judging someone and not trying to help them see the right way then that says a lot about you. He wasn’t being racist toward lucas, he was protecting max because of how his father would react to it. He had his own weird way of protecting her. He cared about her and she cared about him (obviously). the love he was showing max was the love his father was showing him because that’s all he knows. I agree with Davion wholeheartedly. just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean you get to yell and speak over him and shove your opinion in his face. he wasn’t saving himself, he was saving those kids. The mindflayer targeted him because of how broken he was. can’t wait for season 4 tho!!!

I’m also very confusef how this very simple scene was so misinterpeted here and even in the comment section??😂 The mind Flayer was after El, it’s sole purpose of existing was to take El’s powers and kill her, and it was just about to kill her with the tentacle when the gang started to throw fireworks at it.
Then after that whole fiasco, El got through to Billy, and just before the monster was about to continue where it left off before the fireworks (kill El with the tentacle) Billy jumped in as a surprise and saved her. She even protected herself with her hands because the tentacle was coming straight for her. Like, before Billy jumped in it wasn’t even confirmed that El really got through to him enough, him jumping in and catching the tentacle was the revelation and the whole point of the redeeming scene.
Billy was nothing to the monster, it’s El it was after, so there is literally no reason storytelling wise why the monster would have just went for Billy there. The point was that Billy broke through the control and did one final redeeming act to save El. Jesus
Omg..Never thought I’d see the day someone tried to deny that Billy was racist. He very much was racist and it has been confirmed by both Lucas’s actor and the directors. He wasn’t “protecting max”. He had been abusing her for years. Yes he was abused. Yes that’s why he was abusive and violent. But that’s an explanation, not a justification. He tried to beat up a 13 yr old child because he was black. He targeted lucas because he was black. He was a racist. And that’s simply true. He was also abusive. That’s simply true. He used to be a good kid, sure, but he became a bad one. And he died before redeeming himself. He was a terrible person.

It was very much confirmed by the writers, directors, and actors that Billy was racist. There is no denying that he was racist. It was said that he didn’t like Lucas because he was black. That’s the hard truth. U want to deny it because u like his character, but it’s quite literally canon. And it’s basic psychology that people have and continue to sympathize with their abusers bc they are manipulated. That’s her brother, of course she’s going to love him despite the abuse. That’s actually what prevents most victims of abuse from speaking out. But it’s said in season four !!SPOILER!! that she wished he was dead every night. That she wanted him to stop terrorizing her, and most of her grief comes from the survivors guilt she has. He did emotionally abuse max. And of course he was a product of his environment. But that’s not a justification, it’s an explanation. He had potential to be a good person, obviously, that’s what the whole sacrificial act was. But he died before he could. He may have been a good kid, but he became a bad person, and he died a terrible person too.

Fun fact the actors of Dustin and Lucas both used to work musical Broadway before doing Stranger Things and I think this was a fun way for the producers to showcase that lol also Billy is an interesting character- he’s created to be a bad person, not born but who was shaped by the violence & abuse of the early 70s & 80s; he was bad BUT he wasn’t a murderer. He didn’t want to kill people; & he didn’t want more to die because of him- thus giving his life to save El. Dacre portrayed that so well.

i don't think one action redeems his whole character even if he sacrificed himself to save eleven, plus the whole season was him being controlled by the mind flayer so the only time we've seen him be his true self was season 2 and the end of this season. there wasn't really a redemption arc in my opinion. billy wasn't a good guy, but he lost the chance to become one.

Billy was possessed this season, yes, but we saw him break through several times. All indicating that he was trapped in his body and really did not want to kill anyone. I really wish Billy survived and got the chance to make it up to the people he’s hurt and mend his relationship with Max, but alas...

This season had a very different vibe than the others for sure. It was a nice break from the constant darkness of season 2 while still having its dark moments. Murray went from being a reoccurring face in season 2 to one of my absolute favorites this season. Man has read two Byers like a book. Maybe one day, he'll read Will and complete the whole set. I felt bad for Billy. Not because he was a great guy. He wasn't. He sucked for a lot of S2. But you also see moments of good that shine through. He purposefully distanced himself from Karen so he wouldn't hurt her. He tried resisting the Mind Flayer both physically and mentally. His final apology to Max. I don't feel sad for what he was. I feel sad for who he could've became.
I also feel bad for Will. The moment his life finally seems to go back to normal, he has to move away and leave all his friends behind. And then he gave away his D&D stuff because he only wanted to play with Mike and the others. That boy is so sweet.
Speaking of Mike, I feel like he was a really good Leader for the first season. An amazing supportive best friend to Will for the second. But this was the first season where I felt a sort of disconnect to him. In the previous seasons, we got to see how he was feeling, or what he wanted to do. In S1, El was around, but his main priority was finding Will. In S2, he spends pretty much all his screentime with Will. And whenever he wasn't talking, his expression told us what he was thinking. But for this season, we only got to see his emotions on a surface level. He says that he loves El, but when she brings it up, he immediately denies having said anything. Once everyone leaves, he looks back at the Byers' house and then goes home to hug his Mom. And we've only seen him hug Karen one other time(when Will's fake body was found). So I think Mike is purposefully being emotionally and mentally hidden from the audience. But the reason for this theory is more of a S4 thing, so until next time.
If Murray reads Will the same way he read Joyce and Jonathan, I hope he does it privately 😬😬 that would be a cool full circle moment though, if he read him and then gave him some comfort and encouragement to be his authentic self. That was kind of his point with Joyce and Jonathan too - stop lying to yourself and just be real
I don't give a fuck what y'all say, I stand with Davion. I think the creators of the show intended it to be a redeeming moment for him. He was an asshole, sure, but people can change. Who's to say what Billy would have become after this. You can't because he died sacrificing himself to save El.

I usually agree with Nathan, but he’s way off here about Billy 😂 Billy was reminded of the past by El, realised he needed to do something and protected El from the monster. Whether of not the monster went straight for him or not is irrelevant, because the monster was controlling Billy and realised it was losing him when he got his own mind back and therefore attacked him when it realised what he was going to do.

Loved your reaction! This season finale was so good! I did feel bad for Billy in the end because he sacrificed himself. You can see that when El was talking to him about his mother he does snap out of it and tried to stop the Mind Flayer from hurting her and the others. At least with his last breath, he got to apologize to Max. That doesn't excuse his behavior at all but maybe if he would've survived he could have truly changed and been a better person and brother to Max. People do change.

That's why he went for Billy, I think the reason he done that is because what El showed him. He knew he was a bad person and he knew what situation he and El was in.
