    This is, hands-down, the most complete and easy to follow video of this procedure anywhere on the Internet! Thanks for taking the time to video this process and for sharing it with us! I followed your steps exactly and was done in 30 minutes, and now my rear hatch works once more. Thanks again!

    A shop wanted $410 for the part and total $675 parts and labor! I just finished this job DIY in 25 minutes.! Only trouble I had was the handle had a socket instead of screw and my extender got stuck putting it back on. Thank you!

    I really want to thank you for this video. You saved me around 375 USD!!
    I have a 2017 Sportage but the process is basically the same.
    I went to the car dealer which in Mexico happens to be the authorized service center also. First, they wanted to charge me for disassembling the back gate "to see the part number". Of course I told them that you only need the VIN to exactly know the part number without needing to disassembly anything. So I went to the spare parts section and with the VIN of my vehicle they gave a quote of 475 USD only for a new latch. The work to change it would be charged separately. The good thing is that the quote had the part number :) .
    So, with the part number I went to Amazon US and order the exact original part for only 200 USD shipment included. A week later, I received the original part directly from Korea and using your video a managed yo change it myself!!
    So, considering the saving on the price of the part and the charge for changing it, your video saved me some goo 375 USD!! Thank you!!

    • @BCDriven
      @BCDriven  2 года назад +1

      Thats really good to hear! One of the main reasons I try to make videos is to give people the tools and confidence to tackle projects like this. You probably seen the video and thought "I can handle that" and thats basically what I try to give people. Some people may look at a more complicated video like the one on my F250 diesel that had an oil leak and think "yeah no way I can do that" and thats fine too.
      Moral of the story, Glad you got your Kia fixed up and were able to learn and save some money along the way.

    So many thanks. Dealer wanted $500 plus for what I did in about one hour. Was easy to follow along with this video. Ordered same unit on Amazon. With 3 year insurance, cost about $170.00. Remember, have a 12 km socket for the bolts. A little tight getting motor plug off. Wife's smaller hands did the trick. Don't forget to unplug the starter button, headache maker. Didn't duck fast enough. I put silver dots on housing where the clasps are located, made it easier to find the compression areas when reinstalling plastic housing. Was a snap. Hope others will follow suit. Saves money big time.

    Great tutorial video on repair/replacement of rear hatch latch assembly. Followed your guidance and I was able to effect the repairs successfully. Great video, it was good to watch before I did this repair on a manual door. A couple of notes.
    1. The handle on my 2018 was secured with 10mm bolts.
    2. The first replacement was an assembly purchased off Amazon. It secured the door solidly, and the buttons to open it worked. However, the dash display showed the door was open. So I did it again, with an assembly purchased from Kia, and it works perfect.

    • @BCDriven
      @BCDriven  2 года назад +1

      Nice, I pinned a comment about the handle bolts. Mine were a 10mm bolt but had a phillips head in then so I just used the phillips since it was out. And on the Amazon latch, mine came from Amazon but was a genuine Kia latch. Glad you were able to get it fixed up.

      There shouldn't be anything you need to reset but it doesnt hurt to try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and retrying. Have you tried all methods of activating it? (Key fob, button on dash, button on the hatch) Does the hatch just not close or not stay closed? You may just double check all your wiring connections also.

      @@BCDriven the other thing I recall as after closing (when it was working), I would hear this sound like it was latching securely (beyond just a click). I don't here that after replacing it but I can't move the door either so I'm assuming it's secure. Curious if anyone knows the sound or experienced it still doing or not doing that afterwards.

    This video was awesome! You have any videos for a sedona where the latch opens, but the door only goes up automatically on a random basis?

    • @BCDriven
      @BCDriven  8 месяцев назад

      Unfortunatley not, that's a slightly difficult one to troubleshoot. It sounds like it could be an issue with the latch not signaling to the actuators that it is opened, therefore the actuators aren't lifting. I can't remember if the hatch has a simple plunger style button like the doors have to signal that it's closed or if the latch itself has a switch built into it. Either that or the actuators are getting weak and not functioning correctly but I feel that failure would be a lot less random. I would open it several times sitting in the back and see if there's any distinction between the times the actuators open and the times the latch lets loose but it doesn't open. Try to see if there's a correlation with interior lights coming on or not or putting slight pressure on the hatch when it opens and see if anything makes it consistently fail or consistently work. Sorry if that isn't helpful.

    I pulled the unit apart and found it’s a small nylon cog that cracks.
    Was able to repair the cog and reassemble
    The repair involves heating a steel pin and effectively plastic welding the cog with the pin inside
    Convoluted and bit more than an easy fix but works and won’t fail again as the weak link now has a steel pin.
    Took round 2 hrs end to end

      Nice. That's an option too. I opted for the easy fix with Kia parts because it's my wife's car and I don't want her to have to worry about it. First one made it to almost100k miles so if we get another 100k outta this latch I'm fine spending the money lol.

    That was fantastic. I wonder if you could do, or show us how to retrieve the retaining 10 mm nuts that hold the tail light assembly when they fall into the "black hole" and end up under the storage area. I have a 2016 Kia Sorento.
    I was replacing the tail/brake light in the the Driver's side assebmly and being 73 my shaky hands dropped both nuts down into the "abyss".
    Kia parts tols me they don't have those separate and we have to buy the full assembly. I was able to McGyver someting to hold the assembly in place, but I was wondering it there was a way to remove the first small storage compartment to retrieve those nuts. While I was doing that I also dropped the "backup" Fuel pull tab that is velcroed to the body. That's what happens when one gets old.
    Thanks again and God bless. 🖖🏼🤟🏼
    P.S. Magnets won't work as they get stuck to the frame. I tried a Dyson with McGyvered slim tube, but no go.

      I hate when there is a bolt swallowing black hole. I'll have to look into that and see how I can help, If it's just a nut or bolt that fell down and not a specialty fastener it may be as simple as taking one off the other side and going to the hardware store to get a replacement. It's likely a M6-1.0 thread but you should take the other one with you to verify just in case.

    Does this part power the hatch open? My hatch will not open or close. When I hit the button to open, I hear it unlock but does not open. I then have to crawl in side and unlock to open the hatch. When I manually close it, I have to still hit the button for it to latch otherwise I get a warning on the dash. So seems like what ever powers the hatch open or closed has failed. I am trying to understand if this part does that or if there is another part involved to power the gate open and closed. Thank you.

    Nice video: my 2011 Sorento EX has a manual lift gate. The problem is it might open once out of 99 times with the fob, not at all with the key in driver's side door. The fob does lock and unlock the side doors. Dealer replaced door latches on two front doors because of recall. Is the lift gate latch in any way connected to the work done on the doors? Everything worked perfectly until I took it to the dealer but now it seems the best and often times the only way is to crawl into the back area from inside the car and use the emergency manual switch to open the lift gate. I tried replacing the latch with a new one but get the same results. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

      I'm not super familiar with that generation sorento but I would always started with the simple things first like replacing the battery in the key fob. Any chance you have a suggestion for getting that screw out? It’s just spinning

    • @BCDriven
      @BCDriven  2 года назад

      Take a pair of wire cutters and try to work the tips in on either side of the screw head (kind of like if you were going to cut the screw head of with the cutters) and to try to lift it out as you slowly turn the screw with a drill or screwdriver. If you don't have wire cutters you can usually do the same thing with a small flathead screw driver it's just a little more aggravating because when you turn the screw it tries to push the screw driver out. Worst case scenario, get some wire cutters (preferably flush cutters) and just cut it off flush and poke it through. You can usually buy these at Home depot or Lowes in the little drawers on the hardware aisle. Hope that was helpful.

      To be completely honest with you I don't know for certain. The change process will be very similar if not the same but the PN you will need is either 8123 3Z000 without the power lift gate or 8123 B8100 with the power lift gate. I got these part numberts from the exploded view on Kia's websight. I can't link to it but if you copy this ( kiaparts/v-2015-kia-sorento--sx--3-3l-v6-gas/body--liftgate ) and add a "dot com" between the "kiaparts" and the "/" it will take you to the exploded views and you can see the part, item 2 on the second diagram. Hope that was somewhat helpful.
