Create colorful notes and mind maps. Practice old exams and papers. Start assignments sooner rather than later. Get plenty of sleep.
Seeing you exhausted and still showing up for studies makes me push harder in my day to day tasks and trust me, even when I have a bad test but end up surprising myself, just like you did cause hard work is directly proportional to the marks you score irrespective of how the test goes !!!
In my opinion, it’s wild how often you’re uploading! You must be so busy but it just goes to show the passion. I’m already scrambling with one video per week 😂
Shaun Andersen not sure about you, but all the M23s in our program basically say that the first year was primarily spent learning how to study and manage time 😅 Good luck with the next unit man 🤘🏼

Really love your videos. I would enjoy to see your actual study sessions/zoom meetings. A short clip or even leaving the camera on a tripod showing a time lapse would be awesome!
Man, I gotta say your work life balance is a great inspiration! Managing to post as often as you do but still manage your studies is super inspirational. Going through this exact block right now myself! Love your positive outlook as well, even when the exam threw you a curveball. Keep up the hustle my guy
Hey man! :) thank you for the kind words! It is definitely somewhat of a facade since I do think I can balance these things a bit more. I am currently in a position where my life sometimes takes too much time away from my schoolwork haha but it is getting better! & I am firm believer that positivity is extremely necessary in every situation! Even though I felt like I did bad, I knew there was nothing I could do about it and I could only learn from it! :)
The most relatable video on YT 😂, as a medical student, you never know what’s going to end up in the question paper. All I want to say is keep you head up, don’t worry too much if you get some bad grades, keep your confidence up, things will fall into its place. Keep up the hustle. Just like always, enjoyed this video too.
Hey Shaun, I came across you videos randomly on RUclips. This is great to watch because I am currently finishing up my BS in Psych and then applying for my Masters during my last class. I’ve wanted to try making RUclips content and I think this is a great thing to show. Thank you for the inspiration and great job on your first exam.
Hey Ryan! :) Congrats on finishing your bachelors! & Good luck on applying for your Masters. You should totally make RUclips content if that is what you want to do! :D It is honestly a ton of fun!
Wow, you are starting with rocking resources! I only really got to try them midway through 2nd year, and really wish I'd done all of these sooner. Would have simplified life
She helps you a lot. I am still wondering how you will survive without her😂😂😂 Keep working hard to find a study routine and thanks for sharing your experience... it really helps because when I have exams I feel the same way...
Finally getting to watch this! Crazy week, non stop engagement surgeries all weekend 😫😭 But awesome video as always! I think you’re studying perfectly, of course you’ll get more and more efficient but you’re definitely doing well! And you’re making me miss being smart 😋
I bet dude! Life of a resident is absolutely crazy but I cannot wait to be in your shoes! 😂 I can already feel my studying getting better and hopefully this next exam will go well! && what do you mean?! You're a doctor bro! You're so smart!! 😂😂
Shaun Andersen hahaha it’s like remember when you knew ochem because you were studying it all the time, now you probably could do like two mechanisms if you were lucky? I see you talking about your pathways and I’m like “oh yeah, I remember when I knew that!” But I never use it anymore so it’s gone haha. I always tell students when they rotate with me “first of all, I’m Adam to you because I’m only a few years ahead of you and I’m sure you know way more than I do! I’m just going to show you the practical use of all your knowledge”
Congrats on your Test score! Your videos are always the best to wake up to in the morning. Although I’ve been missing your live streams cause I oversleep. I’ll make sure to be there next time. Great Vid today!
I have to get prepared mentally and emotionally for medical school. A little part of me is just completely hates the fact that i want to become a doctor😂
Haha sometimes I hate it too! Like why couldn't I have wanted to do something easier or shorter xD But it is going to be the best decision we ever made!
Awesome!!! I saw your Inbox, paperpad and pen in your list above - MY STUDY DESK SET-UP. You had also mentioned getting the document I emailed you about configuring Todoist.
6:58 - When you meet up with your friends are you divvying up some sections, so each person (on their own) works on a presentation, and then delivers it to the study group.
That's how I feel with some of my exams - my study focus isn't completely aligned with the proportion of questions asked per topic. I try to keep my studying as well rounded as I can, and make sure i understand the concepts or processes behind things. That way, even if I don't explicitly know the answer, I have an idea of how to figure it out. It sounds like your educated guesses show that you are doing something right with your studying, even though you felt otherwise. Can't wait to see your revised study strategy in your next video! :) Keep up the amazing work ethic! It's golden!
Thank you so much for the continued support! :) It means a lot to me! I was honestly very surprised to score what I did. Hopefully I can maintain this!
It was fun working through the practice question with you! I just finished my first year of PA school, and despite feeling like I know nothing still, I was able to answer this question correctly, so I do know something...lol. Thanks for sharing.
If you guys like seeing practice questions then I would totally love to do more in my videos- just let me know! :) congrats on finishing your first year of PA school!
If you're struggling with biochem definitely check out pixorize. I wish I knew about it my M1 year. It made the high yield biochem so easy that I looked forward to biochem questions on step 1.
that's why practice questions are really good! of course you need to know the information, but if you know HOW to take the test you can kinda guess on what you don't know.
Absolutely! :D I could put that in my vlog. Real quick though- I absolutely LOVE this chair! I have been using it for a month and it is seriously so comfortable! :)
@@ShaunAndersen Awesome! I just ordered the same chair recently and wanted to know how you liked it. I am also starting first year at med school in Canada.
I loved this vlog! I'm so excited that you got a 85! congrats! You're doing great! even though you haven't figured out the studying part, you're still doing awesome! Great job!
M2 here, just know it takes a couple exams to get into your study routine!! Totally normal for it to take some time to find out what works for you :) I found it helpful to stick with resources that targeted what I struggled with (I really liked B&B for physiology, pathoma for pathology, etc.) You’re doing great!!
Bro this journey is going to be difficult and very exhausting but I believe in you and you are going to yo very very well, you are going to be an incredible physician and while it will be difficult it is not imposible. Keep the great work going and never give up, I believe in you as well as all of your followers!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! :) That was very sweet of you! I am absolutely trying my best, no matter what. I try to be as transparent in my vlogs as possible which means showing you guys the difficult and exhausting times as well. I appreciate your constant support and belief in me and it honestly matters a lot to me. Thank you 😊
I feel like every day is exam week, haha. Anyway, I am passionate about pursuing medicine as a future career, and I love how your videos inspire me to work hard toward my goals. Keep up the good work!
I really do feel that way too :( Studying has become more of a lifestyle now rather than a chore. I am so glad that you are passionate and inspired by the videos! :) I am sure you will go super far!
Hey Mohammed! Thank you so much!! :) I will definitely try to work on adding more fun stuff like time-lapses and whatnot to make the videos more interesting. I have just been so focused on school and scheduling and whatnot so I haven't really been able to put more effort into the vlogs unfortunately :( But I will try my best!
Shaun Andersen i totally feel you man, im a fourth year medical student now and trust me i know how are the early exams look like. Just push through, and it will become something usual my man 😂. Good luck again, and you can easily find your way doing it and kill it. 🙌🏻
Its really cul that y'all concentrating on PBL from the beginning itself- I realized quite late that it was necessary to start as early as possible-kinda brings the theory and application together in a much better way✌👍😎
Can't wait for you to figure out your study techniques and upload a video on that 😍 also seeing you study all the time is motivating me to get my ass off of my bed & start studying🤣❤
Abs is such a great gf making you meals, it's so sweet of her. Lol and you could tell you were burnt out when you got in the car on Monday. You had the look of brain being full to capacity in knowledge.
She really takes such good care of me xD Without her, I probably just wouldn't eat! But yeah I was braindead all week haha I felt like I was forgetting more than I was learning!
Ahhhh that makes me so happy!! :) thank you so much! And thanks for joining the live streams! I really enjoy doing them and chitchatting with you guys! :)
I too would like to see what those cards are please. Yes u sure looked exhausted. I have found people who think they failed before exam . Did well. I think were programed to 2nd geuss our self. SO YAY U PASED IT. CONGRATS 👏 COOL VIDEO! SO SAY YAY FOR ME!😊🤩
Shaun Andersen also, I think that a GREAT video would be showing/explaining how you study and why those methods are effective for you! I’m currently a second year Biochem Major & still learning the ropes of studying effectively, but definitely getting better! Hopefully by the time med school comes around I’ll be at your level! aha
Michael Homsi I definitely want to make a video like that 🙌🏻 I’m just not comfortable enough yet with my study methods and routine! But I will probably after a couple exams! :)
Maybe you can ask a M2 how they exam was e what was the focus... Usually things repeat over the years and this may help you avoid surprises with exams... Hopping you were able to rest after such a hard study week!
Most of the M2 students at my school felt the same way about this block :( It's a bit tough since it is a lot of biochemistry stuff right now. But they have been so helpful in terms of resources and what not!
Okay Shaun, would it be possible to make longer videos? I’m only asking because you put out the week in the life vlog which is the one I look forward to and always watch Sunday morning when I’m at work and it’s slow. I would like to have the videos a little long but I know that’s not up to me. You’re the one that has to balance MS and RUclips so I understand. I guess I am only asking because I like your content.
Hey Dylan! The fact that you want longer videos actually means a lot to me! It really means a lot to me! 😁 I am still struggling to figure out how long to make these videos because some people like them longer, some like them shorter, and RUclips's algorithm I think also favors certain lengths. I aim for anywhere from 15-20 minute long videos and could definitely try for longer ones however it is tough to find a balance of filming and editing right now since I am still new to medical school. I'll try to do a couple longer ones to see how people like them though if I have some weeks that are easier to film! :D
a fellow med student from Syria right here🙋🏻♂️ Your studying layout is epic! I dream of such gadgets. Make sure to always be grateful for having them and ace med school 😌❤️
That ramen looked really good and I'm guessing the package you received must have been a breath of fresh air (no pun intended lol) after the stressful week you had. I'm glad you passed the exam; the unpredictability of the whole situation must have been tiring. Great content Shaun! I can't wait for next week's Live stream. And shout out to Abby for being such a great support system!
Great video! Hope it wasn't too stressful for you. I was just wondering which resource you were talking about when you said 'Atom ' 😶. I am going to med school in September in London so I am not really aware of the med school resources out there! Thank you
Hey there! :) Congrats on starting Medical School soon! You are going to do great. & do you remember when in the video I said “Atom” :p I am not quite sure what I was talking about...
@@ShaunAndersen Thank you!😊 Just looked up the NBME online...what's the difference between USMLE and NBME? I know international medicine graduates need to do the USMLE but I don't really know about the NBME...
Shaun Andersen oh wow! We have 3 blocks in the whole semester, and after each block we have an exam week with several tests for that block! So we get the block exams every 7 weeks. Only 2 questions per lecture on the exams 😭
Aww, I love how Abby is always there with you! Does she have to go back to Reno? :( Haha. I hope she has safe travels tomorrow! Also, I'm sure you will figure out your study groove soon. Don't beat yourself up...you did your best and you will continue to fine-tune it and improve. I'm sure of it! :)
Hey Jen!! :) thanks so much for the kind words! && yeah I know it will definitely get better as I take more exams and solidify my study plans! & yesss Abby has been amazing and such a good support system. It’s unfortunate that she needs to go back :( She will be doing amazing things back in Reno :’)
@@ShaunAndersen of course! Oh man, that'll be an interesting adjustment being alone at home! But you've got this :) That's good though that they are letting you guys meet on campus...so that way you aren't going totally crazy alone in your house! Haha
Shaun Andersen do it for pre and post. The night before put on an oil diffuser or something g to calm u down before bed. Have a nice breakfast and exercise before the test if u can, then treat yourself!
Taking in medical content in medical school is like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. Don’t stress too much a bit everyday and you’ll be amazed at how much you absorb. I am a 3rd year medical student about to finish and enter 4th year. Honestly, just don’t burn yourself out and listen to your body 😊
Have you considered using Notion for active recall/spacedrep? I am looking into Notion and not sure if I should use that or Anki for my upcoming school year.
I just downloaded it last night and will probably play around with it a little bit! When it comes to flash cards though, I do think ANKI is the way to go!
@@ShaunAndersen Update us on how you like it! ruclips.net/video/vtyS2Jcv4Dk/видео.html This 11 minute video by studycollab: alicia has a template I downloaded for my new Notion account that made it really easy to start.
I love your videos so much, having once been a med student myself. Your girlfriend is charming and lovely. I will say, however, that the strong narrative of your RUclips story feels interrupted, halted, when she is in the videos. It’s likely that no one will agree with me, but the thrust of your videos is the amazing style you have in navigating through the drudgery of medical school. But no worries; it’s all good and by now you’re well into your anesthesia residency in San Diego and I know you’ll be a star there, too.
I have a minimum of two Sensi warmers in each room in my house only one warmer per bathroom though but yeah so I’d say I’d love Scentsy also they have some amazing cleaning products
Currently no live lectures due to COVID :( But they are all live-streamed and recorded. Boards = Boards and Beyond which is the gold standard resource for NMBE Board Exam prep. My school uses NBME questions which is why it is a good learning resource. ANKI are flash cards based on the Board videos!
Shaun Andersen thank you ...so if covid wasn’t around , you would have to go to all these lectures person and they would not be recorded for viewing later? Also, you are already studying for the boards in first year? You are very smart and have a great personality which will make you a good dr!
I have the same issue :( My attention span is extremely low. I recommend using a Pomodoro technique when working so that you can get frequent short breaks!
6:29 - In the prior section, where you were talking about ketones, you were drawing words with arrows. Is it possible to actually draw representations of words, much like this slide?
Few simple revision tips for new medical students🙏👇

Keep hardest topics for the morning.
Create colorful notes and mind maps.
Practice old exams and papers.
Start assignments sooner rather than later.
Get plenty of sleep.

Super insightful as someone who’s a premed. You’ve got another loyal sub. Keep up the great work bro!
Hey Don! Thanks a ton man! It means a lot to me that you gained some insight from my vlog and are joining me on my journey! 😁🙌🏻
Abs is such a great gf making you meals, it's so sweet of her. Lol and you could tell you were burnt out when you got in the car on Monday. You had the look of brain being full to capacity in knowledge.
Awe thank you :,) I’ve grown to love cooking so I’m just glad he eats it! 💓
She really takes such good care of me xD Without her, I probably just wouldn't eat! But yeah I was braindead all week haha I felt like I was forgetting more than I was learning!
Can’t wait to see the revamped study strategies next week!
Hopefully I can be better about studying for the next exam! 🙏🏻
Oh my gosh! Thank you for this, I'm literally cramming my work for this week! Such a nice motivation for me!
Thanks! We got this!👍👍
Can you make a video on how you create Anki cards or which shared decks are best?
Absolutely! I am still working on getting better with ANKI but I will do my best to make a video on it soon!
I always look forward to your videos on Sunday morning while eating during my work break. P.s. I love the live-streams ❤️
Ahhhh that makes me so happy!! :) thank you so much! And thanks for joining the live streams! I really enjoy doing them and chitchatting with you guys! :)
Same!! It’s my Sunday coffee and Shaun time!!
I too would like to see what those cards are please. Yes u sure looked exhausted. I have found people who think they failed before exam . Did well. I think were programed to 2nd geuss our self. SO YAY U PASED IT. CONGRATS 👏 COOL VIDEO! SO SAY YAY FOR ME!😊🤩
I should definition show them more in my vlogs for sure! I will do so this week! :D Thank you so much for the continued support Sherry!! :)
Yo can someone PLS tell me what “Boards and Beyond” and “Inky Cards” are? I think inky cards are the same as flash cards ?!
B&B is a video lecture site! :) it’s like the gold standard for NBME prep! And ANKI are the flash cards!
Shaun Andersen ohhhh I see! So B&B is separate from your university, but it is very beneficial to do, correct?
Exactly! 🙌🏻
4:38 I wish I had a thought process like that lol, I mainly rely on memory, but that hinders my problem solving skills
I am honestly the same way 😅 med school really forces 2nd and 3rd order thinking though so I am trying my best to change my ways!
i love getting to watch you go through your weeks in med school, it feels like we’re all friends😂
Hey Kayce! :) that’s exactly how I feel! Sharing and watching other experiences really makes you feel like you are a part of the journey!
SHAUN! I love your videos man, keep up the great work. I'm a first year too and am struggling with Embryology but i'm getting through it 😂
Hey man!! :) thanks so much! && good luck with Embryology/your first year in general! We are going to push through this 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Shaun Andersen thanks bud! Videos like yours keep me going during this craziness 🤣🤣
I'm still pretty behind these vlogs lol , but it's exciting to see a week in a life of a med student!
You are really hard working and passionate about what you do.😍😍😍👨⚕️LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.👏👏👏
Thanks so much Ahmad! 😁 I really appreciate it!
I look forward to your videos and even if I can’t make the livestream, I enjoy rewatching them
I’m so happy you tune in after the fact 🙏🏻🙏🏻 thanks so much! I will definitely keep doing live-streams at least once a week!
Shaun Andersen awesome sounds good. Hope the anatomy quiz goes well!
a fellow med student from Syria right here🙋🏻♂️
Your studying layout is epic! I dream of such gadgets.
Make sure to always be grateful for having them and ace med school 😌❤️
Of course! I'm never forgetful of all the blessings I have! Thanks so much!❤
Hey bro awesome video. Its so nice to see the life of a medical student. Enjoyed it. All the best for ur exams..
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much! The ramen was soooo good! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Seems like it was a very stressful week! But I still love ur channel!! ❤️
It was! But we got this!❤
I love your videos such an inspiration and love too see your channel grow much love Ramy
Thanks so much for love! 😄❤
@@ShaunAndersen Just watched that part again in x 1 speed and realised you were saying 'AMBOS?' not Atoms....😶 haha!
Havi Mar Ahhhh that’s AMBOSS! :) its an NBME-style question bank!
@@ShaunAndersen Thank you!😊 Just looked up the NBME online...what's the difference between USMLE and NBME? I know international medicine graduates need to do the USMLE but I don't really know about the NBME...
Gotta love buzzwords- crazy that you’ve already had your first exam! My first block exams aren’t for a month!
How often do you have exams? :o my school is every 3 weeks!
Shaun Andersen oh wow! We have 3 blocks in the whole semester, and after each block we have an exam week with several tests for that block! So we get the block exams every 7 weeks. Only 2 questions per lecture on the exams 😭
That sounds stressful 😱😱😱 that’s a lot of information to remember for every exam!
@@ShaunAndersen Yeah, not really looking forward to it, haha!
As always, you’re the sweetest Jen :,) thank you so much!!💜
@@abigailward8970 of course! I gotchu 😁👍🏼
@@ShaunAndersen of course! Oh man, that'll be an interesting adjustment being alone at home! But you've got this :) That's good though that they are letting you guys meet on campus...so that way you aren't going totally crazy alone in your house! Haha
How do you go from - “I think I might’ve failed” to ‘85%’
Trust me I am just as confused as you are :p
Hahaha that’s literally every exam in med school!
Yes, u def should make a pre exam night tradition!
Yeah I should definitely make it a post exam thing! We shall see!🤔🤔😂
Shaun Andersen do it for pre and post.
I absolutely need to get on your level 😱😱😱 Maybe I’ll need to get at least one more for the bedroom!
For some reason I can't wait to tell you when I get accepted in to med school in a couple of years. Keep up the great work!
Yoooo I can’t wait to hear when you get accepted!! :)
For some reason!? Hahah because it’s going to be such an awesome feeling! Can’t wait to see to on here telling him!
I love biochem when I was in first year med!😍 Our online school starts next week as well.
That's awesome! Wish you the best! ❤
@Shaun Andersen you too bro
this video just made my sunday so much better :)
Ahhh and that comment made my Sunday much better! :)
I dont know if you mentioned this in any of your videos or not, but what residency are you thinking of going into after med school?
Heavily considering Oncology, Peds, Surgery, or Emergency Med! :)
So are you paying so much money for school to watch and study videos ie are there any live lectures? What’s onky cards and boards?
Currently no live lectures due to COVID :( But they are all live-streamed and recorded. Boards = Boards and Beyond which is the gold standard resource for NMBE Board Exam prep. My school uses NBME questions which is why it is a good learning resource. ANKI are flash cards based on the Board videos!
Shaun Andersen thank you ...so if covid wasn’t around , you would have to go to all these lectures person and they would not be recorded for viewing later? Also, you are already studying for the boards in first year? You are very smart and have a great personality which will make you a good dr!
I hope you start numbering these videos
I tried naming them 😅 but maybe if people would rather have numbers I could also do that
Do you think a 3.9 in high school correlates to good undergraduate which helps u out with med school?
I mean that is much better than I did in High School :p I am sure you will do great in Undergrad!
I have 2 weeks exams starting next week. A levels stuff 😂 and you motivate me to study! Biology&Chemistry are killing me internally haha
Ahhhh snap good luck! 😱😱 you totally got this! Biology and Chemistry are hard but super rewarding when you do well :) you’re going to do great!
@@ShaunAndersen Thank you!!! ❤
I literally find it impossible to pay attention in class or in many tasks in general, any tips?
I have the same issue :( My attention span is extremely low. I recommend using a Pomodoro technique when working so that you can get frequent short breaks!
You remind me of Rachel southard .... love your work ethic✌🏼🇬🇧
That is like the biggest compliment ever! Haha Rachel is awesome! It has been so fun to watch her progress through medical school!
Shaun Andersen definitely has can see you doing the same 😊✌🏼
What is the tablet you use to take notes and do your work on?
I use the iPad Pro 11 inch! :)
Hello dude, med student here, greetings from 🇲🇽
Ayeeee :) always nice to meet other med students! Good luck to you! 🙌🏻
ASUSUAL INSPIRING BRO ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR CARRIER 😇
Thank you so much 😀 Really appreciate it!
@@ShaunAndersen IF U APPRECIATE SOMETHING THAT WILL APPRECIATE EVERYTHING TO U BRO BYEEE.
HAVE A WONDERFUL CARRIER.
What a change shaun uploading more frequently on YT, i m enjoying tho :")
Haha I am trying my best!! :)
@@ShaunAndersen I really really love your videos gives me motivation for studies and girlfriend haha ;)
Can I get a heart so later on when you become famous I will have something to brag :) Good luck on your exams
Ayeeeeee :D
Where did you go to high school? (Because of the Centennial swimming jacket)
Centennial High School in Vegas! :)
6:29 - In the prior section, where you were talking about ketones, you were drawing words with arrows. Is it possible to actually draw representations of words, much like this slide?
It was actually the video that was drawing those arrows! :p
Your place is so nice dude, you got an optimized space to study in haha.
Thank you so much Sam! :) That was the whole goal when moving in here- just creating a nice and relaxing study space!
What subject was that that you were showing us with the keto bodies?
Biochemistry/Metabolism! :)
