The Rise and Demise of The Smiths

- Welcome to Music Rewind! Today, we're looking at rock 'n' roll royalty, The Smiths. Their legacy in British music is widely credited for the growth of indie rock and has influenced a new generation of acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Oasis.
However, despite the music, more people remember the fights, lawsuits and feuds within the band, especially for members Morrisey and Johnny Marr. Was this the worst break up in music history?

[#TheSmiths #JohnnnyMarr #Morrisey #HowSoonIsNow? #TheQueenIsDead]
Mike Jones and Andy Rock
What an arse 😂😂😂
"The Charming Man" "What Difference Will It Make"
John Potter
Heaven knows I'm miserable.
How do you watch a bio vid that gets the names of the band wrong? Off after a minute
There is no way the Smiths will reform. Not with Rourke's Death.
I’ve always wanted someone to just sit me down and explain the history of the smiths; thank you
In the first two minutes alone: Andy Rock, John Potter, The Charming Man.... so many sloppy errors.
Rest In Peace Andy Rourke
RIP 😢
something important to note is that johnny and morrissey were only briefly introduced in 1978 at a patti smith gig, they didn’t become friends immediately afterwards (bear in mind johnny was only 14 and morrissey 19), in fact not until johnny decided to knock on morrissey’s door of his stretford home in 1982.
a few inaccuracies throughout (such as mike’s last name being joyce not jones!) but overall a good video to establish a basic history of the band.
Well narrated and edited but not well researched.
The real story of how Marr and Morrissey became friends and band mates is much more interesting.
I don't think the reason given for the break up is right either.
@@ubellubo I appreciate both compliments and criticism, might have to give this one another go haha
Mike Jones? The Charming Man? Sure you know about this band?
This channel should really be called Music Fiction Rewind haha. Honestly I created this video because I knew more of the bands history than their music which made me want to create a video. It does appear that I did mix up and also seem to have created completely fictional characters. Soz
@@musicrewind8713redo it then with the mistakes fixed
So many of these channels need an editor. Or a true fan to listen to it one bloody time
The Smiths were really something special. They were an unreachable masterpiece
Have a drink for every glaring mistake in this video
You're getting plastered mate haha
@@musicrewind8713 haha sorry for the criticism…there are a lot of us staunch Smiths fans out there!
@@melciveng nah don't apologise, it was a very funny comment. I'll admit it's not my finest work and did get a few things wrong
remember that great hit they had? "the charming man" ?? me either lol
@@damiengreen28 pretty sure it was a b-side
Band drummer was Mike Joyce, not Mike Jones.
i noticed this 😭
The smiths is my favorite band, I love hearing the history of them!!
My favorite song of all time is There’s a Light and It Never Turns Off.
Ah 'The Charming Man'. What a great record. I especially love Mr. Rock's bass on it
My #1 band of all time, i can remember sitting alone with a joint in my mom's car at night and hearing Frankly Mr. Shankly at 16. That was it..i got Queen is Dead next day and was hooked ever since.
Andy rock ? Mike Jones ?
Greatest band of all time❤
really good video my bro. try do my chem or the cure. would be lit.
The Smiths broke up at the right time. Strangeways was their best album and there was no real topping that album.
Sure there was, Morrisey had plenty of amazing solo songs. If only he had done them with the Smiths they'd have been masterpieces. Some were even without the Smiths but not many. Strangeways was unbelievable, I could not have asked for a better album when it came out.
@@stoneneils The songs from his first solo album were written by Stephen Street who gave them to Morrissey, who provided the lyrics, after The Smiths broke up. Those great songs would not have been written by The Smiths if they were still together.
Great video!
Great documentary
There is a lot of facts wrong with this but it’s a good video 😊
Terrible, almost everything is wrong 😂
No it’s no
lot of misinformation in this review unfortunately
Like what
@@alexgardner5997 i mean for one the people who Morrissey met in regards to the controversy of Suffer Little Children. it was actually the mother of Lesley Ann who he established a friendship with. Gannon was brought in as a guitarist, no one has ever said/claimed he was brought in to play bass. the legality surrounding the band royalties were fucked because Morrissey didn't want to have to discuss it, and would constantly hand responsibility to Johnny to discuss it with the manager/label. behind the scenes, Morrissey spoke in an entitled way about it because he was the frontman.
just a few things i can think of from the top of my head, i've seen and read a lot of material on the history of this band because i thought it was interesting. can't really get everything from a few sources unfortunately, tho there were a decent number of things he got right in this video so i can't exactly knock it too much
@@alexgardner5997 also the song names and band member names being wrong, but it's more funny than misinformation lmao
This is full of so many errors
Seriously. I had to bail, ready to throw my phone against the wall. "What Difference WILL IT MAKE"??? Good lord. Really reminds you that these RUclipsrs aren't necessarily fans, or even willing to learn: they're just looking for content. An editing program, grab some old footage, scan Wiki, and you're off. Friggin' disgrace.
“Andy rock”😭😭
Mike jones & andy rock , bro spoke British quite frankly
I love morrissey
10%..Andy and Mike had a point.
Morrissey and Marr felt they did all the work. Not just songwriting, but Marr was the producer and defacto manager while Morrissey did the art work and media interviews etc. All Rourke and Joyce had to do was turn to record their bits in the studio.
Plus Morrissey and Marr had to a lot of band expenses out of their cut.
@@ubellubo The bass lines make the songs.
@@EndoftheTownProductionshe didn’t write the basslines goofball he just played it
They both deserved 10%
@@notreallyafamousartist695 You are insane if you think Johnny Mar wrote Andy's bass lines, when even Marr insists the basslines were all Andy. If Andy was merely recording the lines he could've been substituted by any other competent bass player, but the reason they kep bringing him back even when his addiction made him unrealiable was because it was his bass lines that made Marr's guitar work in the Smiths
i’m still not over one direction, why was it the opening scene 😭
At the drive in was a hurtful break up too. If you know you know!
Gave up after 2 minutes, Andy Rock, John Potter, What Difference will it make, Moz and Johnny friends in 1978.....
They did meet in 1978, but it was just a brief meeting. Saying they were friends at that point is a bit of a stretch.
we LOVED 'em SO much !!.....pretty sad.......
the credibility of this piece is top shelf
Morrisey is a very private person and never talked shit about Marr, while Marr based his whole career post smiths to bash on Moz. Shame.
Damn I forgot about mike Jones
4:33 Who would care if a band signs with a label? Is the music good or not is the only concern I would ever have.
“What difference will it make.”
See ya!
Andy Rock was a brilliant bassist (and Mike Jones was a pretty good drummer) -- and The Charming Man, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable and What Difference Will it Make were great songs.
Dude, do some research or better still, don't do a Smiths video.
What difference WILL it make? Come on.
Couldn't be bothered to get the names right
How can I take this seriously when you get band members names wrong as well as names of the songs?
They never demised..just stoped existing
One million pounds & 10% of royalties. Induces self loathing.
I love The Smiths.
Sorry?
I love this band
Two minutes in and still haven’t called a song by its correct title.
THIS charming man. What difference DOES it make Heaven knows im miserable NOW and most importantly Andy ROURKE. Come on man youve made an complete arse of yourself 😂😂😂😂
Too many inaccuracies.
Mike Jones, did I hear that correctly???
Yeah, thought I'd just invent a character. Poor Mike Joyce haha
the charming man? make a video and dont even know the names of the songs? ok bye then
please review harrys house album
The general gist of their career was good (although with some glaring fiction). Being a besotted one, I always regarded Meat Is Murder as their magnum opus (yet The Boy With The Thorn In His Side from 'Queen' is incomparable)
But in the end it's all bona to vada ...
You're confusing smiths with morrisey solo.
Morrissey done many great songs after smiths his solo career is gone even better, as for Johnny nobody knows any of his songs his life is all hanging onto smiths past
Dont give up.
*Unfortunately, the most effed-up people create the best music.* Don't believe me? How's this list for ya: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Idol, David Gahan, Kurt Cobain, all of the Go-Go's, Robert Smith, Black Francis, Kim Deal, Miki Berenyi, all of My Bloody Valentine, Michael Jackson, Madonna, George Michael, Little Richard, and the most effed-up of them all, Steven Morrisey. *_Why are we emotional slaves to such morons? I don't know._*
Music was and is intended to glorify Jesus' dad. That's why
Oh FFS!! 35 seconds and out...
This bloke needs to get his facts right, get the names of the songs right mate!111
when you use AI to make youtube videos
Sorry mate, can't blame AI for this
No, turned it off, annoying…
Seriously though, you should delete this video it’s really quite embarrassing…..
moz is a plum duff for breaking it off but Marr is a Berk in his own rite. used to fancy a pint with the two but these days it just a cuppa. .no wonder Andy was skint. would have been knackered me self. they were all plonkers in the end.but still its all chinwag really.blinding video. cheerio . bobs your uncle
It had to happen for morrissey to evolve
Mike Jones and Andy Rock
