2024 I’m still here rocking with Mr King Curtis . I just wish there was a longer version. And when I leave here, I’ll roll on over to the queen of soul Aretha Franklin and listen to her version. Rock on King.
Hail to the King..!!! Yes, this is the man, that I grew up listening to. I'm a child born in the late 60's, and this song was one of the songs I had to listen to every weekend...ALL weekend. I probably knew about "King Curtis" before I knew my own name. Now that I am older and wiser...this song, I now listen respectfully and enjoyingly. Truly, he was a talented and gifted man. Although he lost his life tragically, may he rest in peace.
i use to love this song as a young girl my dad use to play this to on his Sax maybe not quite as professional but still sound good to me. Miss my father so much it brought back good memories.
Truman Thomas, on organ , Bernard Purdie on drums, and yes, CL Dupree on guitar and Jerry Jemott on bass. The Kingpins were simply awesome and King Curtis' untimely death was an obscenity.
Nice ID work, John. I could se that it was "Pretty" Purdie and Cornell, of course, but I didn't really recognize the great Jerry Jemmott on the bass guitar, although he looked familiar from other vids (never saw any of these awesome dudes live). Texas soul, baby! And Truman Thomas is a guy I had totally overlooked.
Just stupendous! There has never been another sax player to match King Curtis, especially when he plays soprano sax in Soul Serenade. I also had the original album back in the sixties. Loved it then and still love it now in 2021. The progression starts so easy and just builds and builds to a beautiful climax. RIP King!
I remember hearing the Live at the Filmore west album and being so moved....dang....Soul Brother...!!!...What a terrible thing to happen to our brother King. A great voice in the Blues world, a real Gentleman.
Cornell's runs are primo. King Curtis, Junior Walker and so many others a sound track in this OLD white guy (with Narragansett blood) memories. Music knows no color, race, creed, or origin. It is simply to be enjoyed and celebrated as a gift. Here in 2021 please listen, smile, and be greatful my fellow journeyors.
I have never heard of King Curtis until tonight, but as soon as I heard him play the first note from the sax I got chills that lasted through the entire song. Thank you McGarVision for sharing this.
What an amazing presence that King Curtis was .he was such influence on Duane Allman‼️❤️. So sad they both passed so close to each other in 1971. Made God bless them and their internal songs forever and ever.🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I first heard this song as a kid sung by Gloria Lynn. On the day of his death I remember my mother cried as if she had lost a brother. After listening to this I now understand her loss.
Love it!!! Many thanks for share it! #ClassicMonday #Soul
The King was always so fine. Yeah Cornell Dupree on guitar, JJ on bass, maybe Bernard Purdee on drums?! Sid used to take me uptown to Mikells and we would just groove to some of these cats!!
No he will not! and that is only one of saddest things about his senseless killing! It falls upon us,those who love and enjoy his music and talent! to keep his memory alive! THE KING LIVES!!!!!!!!!
oh how i love this!!! i had the original record but this live version is soso good. thanks so much for posting. i thank you and all the other people who post these great old soul singers and groups. now i can listen to them anytime and they help me so much when i get down in the dumps. i have cancer and you just don't know how much you help me by posting these great songs!! thankx again!!!
King! They did not call you King for nothing,no one can or ever do it better than you- King! Play with the Angels,i dar say that they will have to step up!
I have been negligent in failing to mention that, in this mid-'60 piece, King Curtis performs an introductory feat of Circular Breathing while simultaneously trilling. His act of Circular Breathing is reminiscent of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the multi-instrumentalist who was, in the 50s/60s, famous for holding notes for as long as he wished. Curtis repeats his Circular Breathing-feat to end the tune. How mellow is his soprano saxello sound-voice!
Went from Detroit to New York in 1970 to record an album for Ritchie Havens label.. Bernard Purdie, Jerry Jemott and Cornell Dupree were all on that album. I didn't realize until this year that they were all with The Kingpins. Name of the album was, "A Child's Dream" Kris Peterson. Man, was I out f it.
I'm so pleased someone else noticed this. Duane covering King - that is nirvana for rock and soul. Duane in the intro to the tune references King as "the finest cat there ever was" - says it all.
that's becaise they asked King Curtis to tour with them and love his work. There are some bootlegs of King Curtis appearing in concert with the Allmans
He's the reason Saxophone was my 2nd choice for musical instrument in elementary school,I got my 1st choice...drums/percussionist...I could play with these guys.just not the saxophone :(
@busterbrot you are listening to cornell dupree, one of the finest rhythm guitarists ever. it's not about the chords, it's the way in which they are played. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and come back in 6 months, and you'll be able to figure it out for yourself. Check the Memphis Soul Stew clip for more tasty Cornell Dupree.
Thanks Guitarnut58 - you are so right about the way King Curtis was lost to us - I remeber listening to that sweet saxophone playing on my first KC album 'Live at Small's Paradise' and then reading my way through the sleeve notes and then stumbling across that dreadful paragraph saying how he died in such a violent way - probably over an argument that could have been sorted out somehow - An apalling waste and I think of it every time I watch the vid's. Your guitar playing going well??
Thank God, for RUclips clips. After watching this clip a dozen times I never paid attention to the instrument King Curtis was actually playing because in my mind's eye I went back into the late 60s early '70s when musicians were playing this song at jazz clubs on alto and tenor saxes. This was always an all time favorite on AM soul stations (Right side of the dial) across the nation back then. What is this instrument the King is playing?
Grover Washington,Jr.,David Sanborn, Jimmy Castor-among others-were somewhat influenced by King Curtis. Grover did acknowledge Curtis' impact on his playing. Voila the trills, high notes, arpegiated repetition, and split tones! The King, were he alive, would have been proud of them. Actually, the King used as his vehicle of soul serenade an instrument called saxcello, which is a soprano sax with an alto clarinet bell. It has, or used to have a warmer sound than an actual soprano saxophone. I don't think that they are still being crafted. Of course, we have the arc or mini-curved soprano sax, not forgetting the curved one, which I call 'saxette' or mini saxophone.
I just can't stop listening to the live album? My missus keeps steeling to listen to it in the car? What a Fucking collection of wonderful musicians.! Thanks for converting me. I think I've found god or bod or mod or something? Cooler Than Cooooool ! Cheer's Bri! X.
@McGarVision I saw the Allman Brothers live in concert the day after King Curtis died in Richmond, Va. and they declined to play an encore because they were so bummed out about it.
hi mc garvision what a real treat to hear and see the great king curtis play such a great song. Iam a king curtis nut and i thought i had most of his stuff could you post the name of theses booth legs please and i;ll hunt them down. king curtis what a sax player.
I knew of the KING from his guest performances on HITS like The Coasters Yakkety Sax and Charlie Brown along with other musicians including Buddy Holly
Among Duane Allman's many accomplishments in his short life was turning on a gerneration of kids to the genius of King Kurtis. Cheers
indeed he did.
I was a white teenager and my friend also white,we were into rock music but oine day we heard best of King Curtis...and that changed my life musically
2024 I’m still here rocking with Mr King Curtis . I just wish there was a longer version. And when I leave here, I’ll roll on over to the queen of soul Aretha Franklin and listen to her version. Rock on King.
You have good taste!
Hail to the King..!!! Yes, this is the man, that I grew up listening to. I'm a child born in the late 60's, and this song was one of the songs I had to listen to every weekend...ALL weekend. O' Curtis was the maestro when I was growing.... The 1970s, to be exact. He belonged to most households in Soweto ....
I'm just an old white guy - I get goose bumps everytime I listen to this song.
Turn the lights off, and play it again.
me too
The fact that you're white shouldn't come into it. You're simply enjoying good music.
This guy inspired me as a youngster to play the sax this record is so sweet.
Gone but not forgotten
Thats Cornell Dupree on guitar. One of my favorite guitar players. Very soulful.
me too
Love me some Cornell Dupree.
He does some gorgeous guitar work, particularly at the start, of BB King's 'You Don't Know Nothing' About Love.' Lovely soulful two-string bends.
The session master!
i use to love this song as a young girl my dad use to play this to on his Sax maybe not quite as professional but still sound good to me. Miss my father so much it brought back good memories.
Have always loved this jam, it is one of my all time favorites ❤
where did 40 years go?
but the man's music is still the best!
As a sax player of many years this guy is my idol. I try to play like him.
Truman Thomas, on organ , Bernard Purdie on drums, and yes, CL Dupree on guitar and Jerry Jemott on bass. The Kingpins were simply awesome and King Curtis' untimely death was an obscenity.

HE was really a King!
What an amazing presence that King Curtis was .he was such influence on Duane Allman‼️❤️. So sad they both passed so close to each other in 1971. Made God bless them and their internal songs forever and ever.🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

What a great musician King Curtis was. This is a classic. Thanks for posting!!!!
some people live long lives and have no impact yet others can live such a short time but leave a mark that lasts a life time.
Amazing band, and its always a pleasure to hear King Curtis and those delicious melodies!
Man oh Man!! How I wish I could have been at that performance.
What a wonderful performer he is, he can make the sax talk, he has perfect mastery, If I could play like that I would never go outside lol
What a wonderful performer he WAS. He was murdered in 1971.
Cornell Dupree on the Telecaster, just as laid back and cool as he could be!
Great selection of talented musicians..

The Allman Brothers covered this song at the end of "You Don't Love Me" jam. Great stuff!
I'm so pleased someone else noticed this. Duane covering King - that is nirvana for rock and soul. Duane in the intro to the tune references King as "the finest cat there ever was" - says it all.

This is the music
@McGarVision I saw the Allman Brothers live in concert the day after King Curtis died in Richmond, Va. and they declined to play an encore because they were so bummed out about it.
You know the musicians are very good when the sound systems were not that good but they still sound so good period.
That is a groove
I really want to see a video of Sweet Inspiration by King Curtis and the group..
I believe he also played on Boz Skaggs' 1st album, on "Loan me a a Dime", along with Duane. Had a short solo...
King Curtis does appear to have played on that song
