Paint a Summer Sky in One Layer: Watercolor Demonstration

  • A beautiful sky is an instant painting focal point. In this video, I'm demonstrating my process for painting from a reference photo, using a wet-on-dry technique that gives beautiful soft flowing color with more control than wet-in-wet watercolor painting.
The most expressive paintings show the heart of the artist, and I talk about how I get to the heart of what I want to show in my paintings in this demonstration. The teacher in me can't help but share tips on watercolor painting, color theory and mixing and brush handling in the process!
I'm launching a brand new course, "Heart-Led Landscapes in Watercolor" and this interactive series opens June 1st. Find out more here: bit.ly/2JBv8UR

As an artist, one doesn't show what is there. It is the process of allowing the viewer to "see" what isn't there.
And you summed it up exactly with your a statement of "showing what you've experienced" in your work. Excellent thought and video.
    Thank you for sharing this...

I am not in the least bit, an abstract painter. With that said, the motivations such as what your painting says about you and how what you are painting makes you feel are just as important for more realistic artists. For that reason and that I adore your art, I pop in from time to time to see what you are up to. I always leave with something important that I can apply to my own style of watercolor painting. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful use of color, your instinctual processes and your talent. I find both you and your art to be a great blessing.

I have had it my mind that doing a first and then subsequent painting(s) of the same scene or object is very important for experimenting and learning. It was nice to see someone of your skill level reinforcing the idea that attempting a given painting more than once is important for incrementally improving artistic ability and the painting itself. Thank you for being being open and honest as a teacher - the best teachers are the one's where you feel they are not holding back in demonstrating how they were once where you are now as a student and how they got to where they are as a skilled artist.

Thank you, Angela, for saying it's okay to do over a painting. I'm currently painting a landscape of a family's beef farm. It's been in the family for over 100 years. They want a landscape that shows a broken down barn, some cows and the green land. The only problem is, the only photo I have to go by was taken in the winter when the large expanse of land is brown. The trees are only dry limbs and, it is out of focus.....LOL. I'm on my second try. Talk about using my intuitive imagination! This lesson you just posted helped a lot and gave me permission to add purple for my darkest darks.....love it. I have a touch of Aliziren Crimson in the sky. So, even tho I've treated the bushes and trees in the distance with a muted green.....I'm going to add a light glaze of purple in front of them......they reach all the way across the painting. Of course, when I do that, I have to use the purple other places, such as shadows on the dominant Oak tree by the falling down barn. I'll also put it in the shadows of the barn and shadows under the black cows. This painting isn't going to be as loose as I'd like it to be because, my customer is very explicit on what they want to see in the painting. Sorry this is so long. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. When I finish this commission, I'm going to do my own loose landscape.

It was very interesting watching you credit your watercolor landscape, because you worked on dry paper bringing the wet washes in a bit at a time, without creating back washes. I usually work wet in wet for the first layer, so that could be an interesting technique to try. I was also surprised to see you leave hard edges in the sky. Altogether, after almost 50 years of painting, you definitely showed me some different techniques. I would really like to know more about how you have painted internationally. Thank you.
