OMG !! Such skill & creativity. Words cannot express his brilliance. I feel privileged that I m alive now to hear & see his music. He will undoubtedly be remembered in the future as one of the greatest guitarists in modern history. Bravo Guthrie!!
it's all over the place, yet a beutiful and methodic mix of rock, mtal, techno, jazz. you just gotta respect it . 4:48 is one the most beutiful 3rd changes ive eer heard.
Sometimes your skill level varies day to day. Personally, I'd rather see a player take risks and play something amazing, with an occasional clam, rather than give a safe, note perfect, but uninspired performance. It's fun hearing a great player recover from a mistake; often those are some of the coolest moments imho. We're just humans; perfection is a great goal, but fear of mistakes can hamper creative expression.
Agreed. Especially the final solo, I may be out on a limb here but in terms of putting passion into playing guthrie may be up there with bb king, not that comparing is important. I swear to god hes making the drummer cry as he plays the final solo!
one of the coolest things in this song, FOR ME, is that it's called seven, the seventh track of the cd, and also the one where you ca always count to 7, meaning it has a 7/4 or 7/8 beat xD
I really like this song's dynamics. I really love the part around 3:00 - 3:30 so tense. and then at 4:10 it just explodes into 320mph rock. Absolutely great
its great fun to hear guthrie mess with high distortion like this, its not typical of his other stuff. he sure knows how to beat the crap out of that beautiful suhr.
Thank you Joe... Thank you Steve... Thank you Yngwie... Thank you Paul... Each one of you have done incredible job so far. But simply this guy is at another level. This is not fair, this is just using a "disproportionate guitar force" against the other guys. I am speechless...
Well there already is a G3, a couple of times, it doesn't stand for guitar idol, It's a show that so far featured Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen (2003 I think), Satriani, Vai and Johnson (1990's somewhere) and recently Satriani, Vai, Petrucci and most recent Satriani, Gilbert and Petrucci. It's this show I was referring to, not the London GI show. I think the G in this case stands for "Guitar" and the number behind it for the number of sologuitarists, in which case you can have a G3 without a G1.
I love how he doesn't complain/mind about the lack of light during his tapping bits. I saw Yngwie once at the house of blues and he stopped the show momentarily due to "bad lighting"... anyway, Guthrie owns...
My personal G3: - Guthrie Govan - Ron Thal - Dave Martone That would be one hell of a concert... Still, Guthrie is above 'em all... GG is for guitar GOD
It's a really cool technique based around harmonics, he explains it in one of his fantastic books. Basicly, you take one of your right-hand fingers and lay it across the 12th fret in the same fashion as when you're doing natural harmonics, so don't actaully fret the notes. Then you use your left hand on frets nr 3, 5 and 7 and do hammer-ons and pull-offs, that will create some very cool harmonics! Try it! Hope I made sense :P
@BodhiSvaha I agree to a certain extent. I'll always believe Shawn was the finest player to grace the instrument, no matter what. Yes, he is known as a speed freak. But he had more emotion and feeling in his playing than most. Epilogue for Lisa is (imo) one of the most beautiful songs ever composed. When he met Hellborg and got into Indian music he slowed down substantially. Thats when his phrasing came out. Absolute other wordily phrasing. I recommend the paris DVD to see what im talkin about.
well practice does count and you need the tools to be able to express yourself on the isntrument sometimes without proper guidance you can't express what you feel over your instrument so you need the tools to do that and yes your expressions and ideas are with in you no one can teach you how to compose really but people can give you the direction of the way things should be done then you decide which paths to take for your approach over your instrument :) Cheers.
@BodhiSvaha I agree to an extent. I think GG is "rushing" at the moment but that will change with age. My personal favorite is Shawn Lane and I think he had everything you could have in a guitarist. He'll always be the best for me
Yes, the great Allan Holdsworth - you might also be interested in Frank Gambale - and if you want to here some seminal Fusion, get an album called Master Strokes by the super-group Bruford - its a work of genius - Allan was part of Bruford during its most fertile period imho (Bill, Allan, Jeff and Dave) - and if anyone wants to know what a bass player is, listen to Jeff.
Auto Flanging would be if he moved his right hand up or down the fretboard, creating a phase effect. As for inverted, sry I used the wrong word. 'reverse harmonics' is better
@hira1800 All of the top guitarists are equal as far as skill, its who youd rather listen to that defines choice. I love Govan because hes quirky, spontaneous and original. Of course he can shred like anyone else. But I also love Petrucci because he puts together really great songs, and hes an excellent composer. those are my 2 favorits.
Phenomenal phrasing: (0:55) (0:57) (1:04) (3:00-3:51) FANTASTIC! (6:26) My Favorite ;( (6:55-7:07) Jizzed my pants (7:08-to the end of the video) Ran off to the bathroom to clean off
ha ha ha ha that's so f****** funny! he just came out of it like a frigging wizard!!! his guitar playing reminds me of like...shiny spells being casted!!! lol, completely amazing.
@iJigglypuff There are amazingly skilled guitarist within ALL genres, Metal as well as Jazz. Saying one genre is harder than another is stupid. You can never completely master a style of guitar-playing. There is always something to learn.
@BodhiSvaha Well, I can kinda understand what you're getting at, but what about those people who get a feeling of "power" or a rush from heavy, angry music? As a musician myself, I've come to learn to respect every kind of music out there, regardless of whether I like it or not. I don't like hip hop music very much, but I have to at least admit that the people who write it are generally good at what they do and I believe the same can be said for any competent musician.
Well I think it would be cowardly for Vai and Satch to deny Govan a spot on G3, even though Guthrie would prove he is actually God. Vai/ Satch have their own style and both have really good compositions. So does Guthrie. So hopefully if it happens they will all be appreciated for their own thing. Verheyan and Timmons were brave enough to stand on the same stage as Guthrie and survived. Well done tbh
for me it's always at a guitar shop on a strange guitar and amp with nothing responding the way my personal gear does - know what i mean. it was just a bit sloppy in that one part.
2:35 i love how he just switches it around because hes screwing up a little bit.. but anyways that just shows his amazing creativity. I love it.
it's all over the place, yet a beutiful and methodic mix of rock, mtal, techno, jazz. you just gotta respect it .
that ending solo penetrated my soul so bad
OMG !! Such skill & creativity. Words cannot express his brilliance. I feel privileged that I m alive now to hear & see his music. He will undoubtedly be remembered in the future as one of the greatest guitarists in modern history. Bravo Guthrie!!

This song is badass. And I love the bass, funky.
the outro solo is the best solo i have ever heard in my 30 years of guitar playing

Words can not describe the talent and feel this guy ripps with. Truely amazing and one of my favorities. Alright, my favorite!!!!!!!
my favorite lick is at 6:22
so classy for improv. thanks guthrie your the inspiration.
Agreed. Especially the final solo, I may be out on a limb here but in terms of putting passion into playing guthrie may be up there with bb king, not that comparing is important. I swear to god hes making the drummer cry as he plays the final solo!
es lo mejor que hay hoy en dia.... increible musica
this is pure genious...you cant learn or practice to get this good... this reflects you as a person
I love the melodic tapping!
one of the coolest things in this song, FOR ME, is that it's called seven, the seventh track of the cd, and also the one where you ca always count to 7, meaning it has a 7/4 or 7/8 beat xD

This is fucking incredulous, best guitarist to ever live.
the end solo is my favourite solo EVER
6:28 wow that sounded so heavenly. Never knew that sound would come out of guitar.
its great fun to hear guthrie mess with high distortion like this, its not typical of his other stuff. he sure knows how to beat the crap out of that beautiful suhr.
No one uses fast shred runs better than Guthrie!! They really bring something to the music
6:28
Pure soul....just phenomenal...drummer's face addictive too.
the tapping part sounds very beutiful.. gutrhie kicks ass!!
GENIOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
i haven't seen them all, but of those i have encountered. guthrie is the best. and i don't say that lightly
Thank you Joe...
Thank you Steve...
Thank you Yngwie...
Thank you Paul...
Each one of you have done incredible job so far.
But simply this guy is at another level. This is not fair, this is just using a "disproportionate guitar force" against the other guys.
I am speechless...
i love feeling really musical when i count his phrasing in seven beats ahahaa
those tapping sections man... beautiful stuff
@musicbymax THANK YOU MAESTRO
1:30 - so melodic... pure beauty

good thing just about everyone like this :)
amazing!
Total freedom on the fretboard like this has not been seen since the Late Shawn Lane
You know someone's good when they can play like this in 7/8 and just feel it and go with the flow.
And check out Pete Rileys' drum fill! 4:59
I love how he doesn't complain/mind about the lack of light during his tapping bits. I saw Yngwie once at the house of blues and he stopped the show momentarily due to "bad lighting"... anyway, Guthrie owns...
holy shit 4:45+ is one of the coolest licks i've ever heard.
My personal G3:
- Guthrie Govan
- Ron Thal
- Dave Martone
That would be one hell of a concert...
Still, Guthrie is above 'em all... GG is for guitar GOD

The best in the world
Enough said
Guthrie really is the best todayin technical and musical terms. Shawn Lane was the only other guitarist I can think of who matches Guthrie
Also....perfect pitch control on his bends....I envy him!!
well practice does count and you need the tools to be able to express yourself on the isntrument sometimes without proper guidance you can't express what you feel over your instrument so you need the tools to do that and yes your expressions and ideas are with in you no one can teach you how to compose really but people can give you the direction of the way things should be done then you decide which paths to take for your approach over your instrument :)
Cheers.
me fascina el tapping del interludio!!!!
master govan 5/5
Man... I'd love to see Guthrie and Shawn Lane sharing the same stage
@BodhiSvaha I agree to an extent. I think GG is "rushing" at the moment but that will change with age. My personal favorite is Shawn Lane and I think he had everything you could have in a guitarist. He'll always be the best for me
Pete Riley. He's a phenomenal player from what I've seen.
Agreed. Plus I guess people should post a video of their own drumming skills before criticizing like that. 5s!
@Timmonsec hah yeah :p just shows how amazing he is!! hes my favourite guitarist by far right now.
dose anybody know what wah guthrie uses ive never heard a wah that good in my life i must have 1,would really appreciate if some1 cauld tell me cheers
2: 40
@ 99tollap
HOW MUCH OF AN AWESOME RECOVERY WAS THAT!?!?!?!
Auto Flanging would be if he moved his right hand up or down the fretboard, creating a phase effect. As for inverted, sry I used the wrong word. 'reverse harmonics' is better
Shawn Lane and Guthrie Govan are at unreachable points.
inverted harmonics, where the right hand touches the strings at the harmonic fret and the left hand triggers them with hammerons and pulloffs.
init.
3:32 what even, that was godly
Phenomenal phrasing:
(0:55)
(0:57)
(1:04)
(3:00-3:51) FANTASTIC!
(6:26) My Favorite ;(
(6:55-7:07) Jizzed my pants
(7:08-to the end of the video) Ran off to the bathroom to clean off
Man I only found out about Guthries attendance at LGS about 15mins after he started his setlist! At which point it was too late to go along!
hey i need this concert..
where can i find it?
I NEED IT! lol
if somebody has it, please, communicate with me..
cheers!
6:30 that.......was beautiful :,(
@vheadfacelegs Agreed, best solo I've ever heard.
I luv the pedal point lick hes does 6:26 onwards : )
Dave Kilminster (other guitarist) have nice Telecaster :)
I know, when did I ever dispute or question that?
Because normally harmonics are fretted with the left hand and triggered with the right hand, but in this case its the other way around.
ha ha ha ha that's so f****** funny! he just came out of it like a frigging wizard!!! his guitar playing reminds me of like...shiny spells being casted!!! lol, completely amazing.
He does. I've shown him to people who don't have a clue about musicality and all of them were zombified while watching Guthrie play.
a fuckin genious!
@BodhiSvaha add Lane and Govan to your'greatest" list.
Guthrie Govan for G3! And Guthrie Govan for PM!
@iJigglypuff There are amazingly skilled guitarist within ALL genres, Metal as well as Jazz. Saying one genre is harder than another is stupid. You can never completely master a style of guitar-playing. There is always something to learn.
@BodhiSvaha lol whats with the sudden change of comment nature?
who is the egg man behind the kit?....amazing drummer!
i believe thats pete riley, the guy who plays on the full length as well
who did the fuckin lighting? the drummer is always lit up and guthrie is standing in the dark
Maybe it was the guy from Mapex?
great geektar playing
@BodhiSvaha Certain music is meant to give different emotions. Stop trolling...
The thing that baffles me is how does every fusion guitarist get such good sustain?
1:13 - 1:17 that is a monster lick
that lick at 3:33 is pure insanity
@BodhiSvaha Well, I can kinda understand what you're getting at, but what about those people who get a feeling of "power" or a rush from heavy, angry music? As a musician myself, I've come to learn to respect every kind of music out there, regardless of whether I like it or not. I don't like hip hop music very much, but I have to at least admit that the people who write it are generally good at what they do and I believe the same can be said for any competent musician.
dude could you do it?
he.. is.. FUCKIN INSANE
hah, the guy at 7:35 with deep scream, ''WE LOVE YOU GUTHRIE''.
@BodhiSvaha don't forget Tatum and Peterson. Some of the best musicians there to.
Attention all haters and hijackers: Go away.
Guthrie is the guitar God of all styles, soulful or shred. That is all.
Bye.
@mrphd1231 I've heard that two other great Englishmen (besides Guthrie), Jimmy Page and Allan Holdsworth were there at the birth :) -
@HitlerSongs 2 hands my friend. The third hand is the next evolutionary step for drummers.
It actually changes colour, like a mini disco in your fridge,
yeah it does. its called "sevens solo"
3:43 nice sound :D
Did anyone notice how at 6:49 he snuck in The Bill's theme?
Someone should tab the absolutely incredible ending solo.
@Kingding6 Agree 100%
Chops = infinity!
Wow! If it gets better than this he can call his footage the "Oficicial London GI Show 2008 shooting"!
how can he play the tapping part without a string dampener? damn..
Fuck,!!!! Amazing, haha, Nice, very nice.
for me it's always at a guitar shop on a strange guitar and amp with nothing responding the way my personal gear does - know what i mean. it was just a bit sloppy in that one part.
