This is the best version… I’ve been scouring the Internet for videos of him performing this song since I was going through puberty and this performance has remained the pinnacle of feel meets shred the entire time.
I'm just like you and absolutely agree. Seeing that you're as freak of Guthrie as i do, i need to ask you a thing; There is also a version of him playing in moscow or there, that he plays a quote of not "careless whisper" but another cheesy song of the 80s... Do you know what video is? i forgot and i can't found it!
Watching this again in 2024. I don't even remember when the first time was that I had watched this - all I do know is it's at least a decade back - longer in fact (maybe that was on another channel?). This and Wonderful Slippery Thing. Finally got me a Suhr Modern Satin in 2016 - this was pretty much the first time I'd heard of the brand. My life changed because of these 2 videos.
I love how at 5:18, right as the last solo passage starts, the drummer begins smiling as he locks eye with Guthrie, as if to say "Oh boy, this entire room is about to get MELTED...here we go."
Breathtaking that last solo... when ever he steps on a wah, great things are about to happen. He goes into complete beast mode every time he uses the wah
not to mention he harbors such a talent in every technique, and has such strong fundamentals that literally can play ANYTHING, which if you ask me helps him attain his true musical ability, because his fingers can actually portray what his brain is inventing....just beautiful.
This is internet gold. He stomps on the intro in this version. And the release at the end after all that build up. Insanely Beautiful. Never take this video down please. Thanks for the upload
he's not that recognized yet, but kinda underrated.. guthrie is truly a virtuoso, his improvisational skills are unmatched in my opinion, and his tapping is phenomenal.. i think the tapping he did from 6:07 would totally make vai jealous
I only recently discovered Guthrie, and he's so good he makes me look at my guitar and feel as though I've done nothing with it. There are surely guys who shred faster, but I don't think I've ever seen a guy who makes EVERYTHING looks this easy and sound so natural. Every style, every genre. He's so proficient at everything.
It's not the speed that's mind boggling, it's the stuff he Comes up with on the spot. He's not playing up and down scales, he's making melodies, displacing rhythms, all that at lightning speeds with every technique imaginable. He's fun but seriously accurate too!
Dennis Struijcken there’s no lag time between what he hears in his head and what comes out of the amp. He’s quite literally talking with the guitar. He IS the guitar. He said himself the fretboard is completely transparent to him.
Thank God for having Guthrie play such a thing. Thank God for having a man that actually filmed that. Thank God for RUclips that allows that man to share it with everybody.
every rendition guthrie plays of his own songs teaches me something new about guitar. He always has some new amazing phrasing that he's worked into everything, this man's control of the instrument is crazy. I wouldn't care if he took a 100 dollar guitar and plugged it into a 10 watt amp, I would still listen and take notes. I could have listened to this song before the album one and thought it was prerecorded/prewritten.
Bottomless creativity! You will never hear the exact same performance. You could watch several shows in a row and each will be different. Guthrie is a true talent and in a league of his own.
this quality is fantastic, best footage of that show on youtube.. i was there right at the front. incredibla. most versatile (and thus, in my opinion, best) guitarist in the world... dont scald me!
Guthrie once played a note that sounded bad. Though it wasn't a bad note. It was just a flaw he had discovered in the nature of the musical system. God has now corrected the flaw and Guthrie's note now sound like all the rest of them; Godlike.
Not only is this technical genius, more importantly, it's just plain cool and that's even more important to me, and, don't get me wrong, I love his other stuff too, but this song just hit home for me as a personal all time modern day favorite!
I've seen Guthrie live twice. What a man! Whenever he plays the guitar he looks like he's having more fun than anyone else in the world! I love musicians like him ^^
Its amzing with all the years I have been listening to music Guitar players like Vai, Joe, Rusty, Gilbert, that i have never heard of GG...Thanks to RUclips I have now...This guy is just insane and very smooth...
It's notably refreshing to see a guitarist with Guthrie's level of diction and incredible virtuosity. I almost enjoy listening to this man talk about guitar as much as I enjoy listening to him play the it.
This guy is the best guitarist that has ever lived, everything is aboslutely perfect. There is not one mistake in this entire performance and everything is so fluid.
Well they both excell at improvisation and they both understand that timing and rhythmical phrasing is everything. Combine that with a superb technique and you get those 2 top notch guitar players. The reason they play different things is because they hear different things in their head and because of that and the effortless translation of their thoughts to their instruments their playing has a lot of personality. Howe is my personal favourite but I love this guy to death too!
thats what I call controll over a guitar...I learned playing this song today and I can tell you its a massive brain attack to stay concentrated on the links...amazing, my fav from EC
5:16 imo still the best live improvised guitar solo i have ever listened to. it is complex, it is fast, it is just genius!!! his brainpower is just overwhelming. Tomorrow i will see him live in Hasbergen, Gerrnany, YEHAAAA!!!! :D
You are so right. Guthrie has put in about 40 years of effort, his entire life, dedicated to music. Because of this he has never ridden a bike, driven a car, or even been swimming. He is more deserving of thanks than anyone else for this. This level of musicianship takes more than dedication - it takes massive sacrifices.
One immense piece of music this! and even better live than on the CD... I also love how you can hear so many influences coming out in Guthrie's playing, like Jeff beck and Gary moore to name a couple!!
I was really impressed until the wah solo at the end... no words exist that express just how impressed i was after the wah solo. his phrasing is incredible.
"You also rock, thank you for the kind words my friend in the front row." haha guthrie rules! guitar gods dont have to be nice to their fans, its awesome when they are.
Also, I must say, the musicianship of his back up players is of impeccable precision, and, trust me, that's very important! I hope to see Guthrie one day or at lest on tv. I mean, why don't they EVER show this kind of talent on the tube anymore? wtf?
I don't find this to be "too much." I think he is making his musical statement the way he wants to and to me, it is just very satisfying and lovely. He has certainly rose to the top in every aspect of his playing.
There is a version of this song where the rhythm guitarist (same guy in this vid) does the harmony shred part around 4:05 but I think it was taken down at some point... it was awesome.
I knew there was a video of that! Thought i'd imagined it. Pity it was taken down, shows just how good Dave Kilminster is even when on stage with Guthrie. Phenomenal, the both of them!
It's always great to see a guitarist that is so good that he is tired of pentatonic blues licks, then play one that ridiculously fast and awesome. 5:31
Well done for learning them! Waves takes longer to learn. I had a lot of trouble with the main verse, but can play it now. Took me months and months! Strangely this has a simpler time signature than most of the others on the album. 5/5
Hate to say this since I am very loyal fan of many other great musicians such as Vai and Satch, Moore, Paul G etc...but Guthrie is my favorite now. Like someone said, he is like swiss army knife of guitar virtuosos. He is that good.
Affirmative, I am juat as amazed. I'm also amazed at how he wrote this song in particular. Every note compliments the chords smoothly and perfectly, as if his improvising isn't scary enough!
After a long consideration I have finally realised what makes Guthrie the best: He can think as fast as he can play. Contrary to the majority of technically accomplished guitarists Guthrie's note choice always makes musical sense even at blistering speeds.
Guthrie is my man,,,,he is different from usual guitar player,,,and yet he looked like a metal shredder but in fact he is a very inspiring melodic guitar gentleman.
easily my favorite song on this album ...well they are all incredible but this the first i will learn when i get back to my electric guitar. Peace Brian
He came to my town for a demo. He's so talented, someone's phone rang and he began to play to the ring tone (y)
🤣🤣 yup
This is the best version…
I’ve been scouring the Internet for videos of him performing this song since I was going through puberty and this performance has remained the pinnacle of feel meets shred the entire time.

It is indeed feel meets shred
Seeing this dude live must be like having a religious expierience
Saw him live few years back
And yes, i can confirm it was!
Yup
I'm seeing him the day after tomorrow in Mumbai, can't fucking wait
@@vivekteega and how it was?
@@justadudeinpursuit insane!!
this is the best performance of waves.
5:31 greatest bend into a phrase i've ever heard in my life oh my god
Might goes as far as to state thats the best bend I've ever heard
I still find myself returning regularly just to listen to this bend a few dozen times or so
He bent the fuck out of that string to two and a half octaves. I just tried it. Holy fuck, I couldn't even get close to a clean two octave bend
CopyCat Music you mean a two note bend, if you tried to bend an octave you would rip all your strings off lol
OH FFS hahaha two and a half TONES* lol
I think this improvisation is way better than the original.
Thank Guthrie for playing such a thing.
Thank the guy who filmed that.
Thank RUclips for allowing the man to share it with everybody.
Watching this again in 2024. I don't even remember when the first time was that I had watched this - all I do know is it's at least a decade back - longer in fact (maybe that was on another channel?). This and Wonderful Slippery Thing.

all these years after first listening to this.... I still can't believe how good it is.... and can't help but wonder how the hell he got so good.
same for me ! the end is absolutly amazing
nicemutant he started playing guitar since he was 3 years old. non stop. that's how he's so good lol
He wrote it at 19 or something, it's insane. I'm studying music at uni and am 19 now and I'm not on his level!
This man is a real genius. I adore him.
I love how at 5:18, right as the last solo passage starts, the drummer begins smiling as he locks eye with Guthrie, as if to say "Oh boy, this entire room is about to get MELTED...here we go."
I've never heard guthrie play so agressively
Coming from listening to nothing but metal for the last year, Guthrie Govan is my new favorite guitarist!
A G3 tour w/ Satch, Petrucci and Govan would be my dream instrumental concert... it needs to happen! who's with me?
Only a true student of music could write something this incredible.
It's so rare to find such a musician
And a seemingly nice & intelligent person to boot!
Ed Pawelko I believe only an intelligent and humble person can reach such levels of skill and musicality.
1nzi I totally agree
saw him yesterday, he's the greatest guitar player and above all a great person.
Long life Guthrie you are amazing you are best of the best in the world 🌎🎸🎵👏
Breathtaking that last solo... when ever he steps on a wah, great things are about to happen. He goes into complete beast mode every time he uses the wah

this guy's recordings are CLEAN. that's refreshing in a world of slop.
he's not that recognized yet, but kinda underrated.. guthrie is truly a virtuoso, his improvisational skills are unmatched in my opinion, and his tapping is phenomenal.. i think the tapping he did from 6:07 would totally make vai jealous
Next time I go to London, I'll look for this guy. Simply amazing! I saw him in Italy a few years ago, one of the best concerts I've seen in my life.
I only recently discovered Guthrie, and he's so good he makes me look at my guitar and feel as though I've done nothing with it. There are surely guys who shred faster, but I don't think I've ever seen a guy who makes EVERYTHING looks this easy and sound so natural. Every style, every genre. He's so proficient at everything.

the guy is just one of a kind, long live GG

literally i love guthrie for coming up something really melodic at the spot such as 5:35 - 5:40 he nails the feeling and it is fresh stuff
For a moment I thought this video had disappeared and I almost cried.
Bottomless creativity! You will never hear the exact same performance. You could watch several shows in a row and each will be different. Guthrie is a true talent and in a league of his own.
Beautiful, slashing, but melodic playing, filled with artistry and style.
Can't ask for more than that.
That main riff is gorgeous. One of my all time favs
That was amazing, this guy really does kick some serious ass!
Best version of "Waves" on the internet.
just saw him last night! Most unbelievable show ive ever been too!
played this song as an encore to finish up the night! WOWWWWW
this quality is fantastic, best footage of that show on youtube.. i was there right at the front. incredibla. most versatile (and thus, in my opinion, best) guitarist in the world... dont scald me!

that final solo almost makes me cry no matter how many times i listen to it!! INSAAAAAAANNNNEEE

O O geezzzzzz!!! how can someone come up with something this masterful?
0 His talent has talent

"Iron Man?"
*plays riff*
You gotta love Guthries Humor!
Love what he says on the guitar, a real innovator with incredible technique.
Beautiful Guitar Licks !! I don't even think I Blinked !!
Govan is so Awesome,,from Start to Finish !!!!
Well they both excell at improvisation and they both understand that timing and rhythmical phrasing is everything. Combine that with a superb technique and you get those 2 top notch guitar players. the wah bit is definately the best!! just so awesome!!
best tone and best phrasing i've ever heard.

what? how come u say that... u tripping
You have to laugh out loud it's so good.....if you dont you'd cry.

Standing on the shoulders of giants. GG takes it to the next level. Genius
I was really impressed until the wah solo at the end... no words exist that express just how impressed i was after the wah solo. his phrasing is incredible.

haha guthrie rules! guitar gods dont have to be nice to their fans, its awesome when they are.
Melody+Feeling+Technique+Speed+Perfection= Guthrie Govan
I love the way he plays
So Smooth
Damn !!
Hes an excellent guitar player, this song is stuck in my head.
I had never heard him until today. I think he has some monster guitar tone. One of the best tones around!
My new favourite!! *
Greg Howe and Guthrie Govan in my opinion are the two greatest guitarists today. I really wish they record something together.
Also, I must say, the musicianship of his back up players is of impeccable precision, and, trust me, that's very important!
I hope to see Guthrie one day or at lest on tv. I mean, why don't they EVER show this kind of talent on the tube anymore? wtf?

I totally agree,, his best ever live vid!!
first time I ever see this song played live!!!! mr govan is the best!!!!...thanks a lot..first comment!!!
So true! I met him in August 2008 at a Guitar course I went on! Amazing bloke!
man the change at 3:33 is amazing omg i can listen to that line over and over again
Guthrie with the original "No, you're breathtaking" moment before Keanu.
This man makes we want to practice like no other.
Just utterly amazing. Such good playing and so much feeling. A modern guitar god.
This is my favorite song of this guy... Excellent...

Will Smyser lol, i wish i could see it, too bad if its already taken down :'((
Seen that too yes! Killminster is an absolute beast too. He's playing with Roger Waters atm
This Performance is phenomenal!
Man, this deserves 382,616,000 views@_@ Cause i dont know how many time i watch it.
that last solo with the wah effect is INSANE!!!
It's always great to see a guitarist that is so good that he is tired of pentatonic blues licks, then play one that ridiculously fast and awesome. 5:31

absolutely tasteful and sweet
beautiful piece
Great!thumbs Up from KK Sabah,Malaysia🇲🇾👍🤘🤘🇲🇾
what an inspiration, just makes you want to play more.
Best guitar player in the world at the very moment.
After a long consideration I have finally realised what makes Guthrie the best:
He can think as fast as he can play.
Contrary to the majority of technically accomplished guitarists Guthrie's note choice always makes musical sense even at blistering speeds.
This song rips my heart out those first bends are the stuff of pure unbridled despair,
tragic really.
Guthrie is my man,,,,he is different from usual guitar player,,,and yet he looked like a metal shredder but in fact he is a very inspiring melodic guitar gentleman.
whenever i see this guy, i want to go home and grab my guitar and practice a lot
i love the jägermeister poster in the background!!!
yesterday i drank half a bottle...
JÄGERMEISTER!!!
5:15 Best end solo of waves I have seen so far and trust me I have seen a lot :)
Guthrie seems to enjoy so much what he is playing.
to be this flawless just isn't fair . GG is without doubt one of the best, i seriously doubt he is human at all.
I would need something like 6-7 months to learn something like that. Guthrie you're such a good musician!
Guthrie Govan is so underated, to bad more people dont recognize his genius.
5:17 to 5:24 is inspired. It’s not technical but those series of bends - the note choice and phrasing really moved me. Especially with the wah too.
easily my favorite song on this album ...well they are all incredible but this the first i will learn when i get back to my electric guitar.
Peace
Brian
Thanks for posting this... just tremendous playing!
agreed it's an awesome live version!
