To me, "Fives" seems like the ultimate improvisation song. There's almost an entire minute (here 2:34 to 3:24) where the player can just go nuts with whatever he wants to play. That is, of course, if you've got the chops to play the rest of the song and the musical sense to do it ALL in 5/4 time. On the actual track, it sounds like Guthrie himself is improvising, and that's what's so cool about the song. It would make sense, since that riff seems so awesome that it can't be charted on paper.
In my opinion, this is most innovative guitarist since the 1980s and technically speaking, the most proficient yet. Dare anyone to post a video response to prove otherwise!
I need to either hang it up or get serious about guitar after watching this! Great doesn't begin to describe the skill level and musicality he possesses. His playing is unbelievably awesome and inspiring.
Great performance here. This was improvised in a lot.. anybody who is familiar with the album and guthries live performances will know he never plays the songs identical to the album, theres a lot of improvisation going on, with only the key/memorable parts being played as on record.
What gets me about this song, is overall it's not too difficult, but those two fast tapping licks, and the way he solos over the changes make the song incredibly hard!
nice to hear him using a few fx for a change - even its just a few seconds t the beginning. Also he plays the first few time thru without overdrive! Sounds like Zappas Pink Napkins
Opine until the Moon falls from the sky There is no best. There are however pablum puking critics whom usually have no idea whatsoever. Critics who if the lights were extinguished would not be able to find their butt in the blackness much less discern who is the guitarist they are listenting to if they weren' t told to begin with.Govan is a talented musician who has taken the time to learn and explore with his instrument of choice. Just like every other musician. His talent communicates .
@GuitarRoast if you by "Music" mean punk, then I agree. As long as it's musical complexity is good. Also, you seem to be suffering from the misconception that precision and technicality counter feel. In order to play with great feel and phrasing you need a certain lever of control.
Geez, to put it mildly, in terms Mike Stern would use, this guy's is an "MF'r"! It's refreshing to hear a shredder that's actually musical and interesting.
If I was hired as big G's touring rhythm guitarist, the first night would be the best of my life, then the constant humiliation would lead to an early demise.
I think buckethead stole..i mean borrowed (for me there is no stealing in music just borrowing) it from the great late Shawn lane ... Anyway good observation 👍👍
2:17-2:21 guthrie looks down at his hands and thinks... "god damn, look at that riff! that's fucking tight! i wish i could play that!" 2:23-2:26 overcome by a shocking realization... "wait a sec... holy tits, that's ME playing that!!! shit, i must be fucking jesus or something! i can't wait to see what i do next!"
Are you referring to the atypical modernist, generally accepted vision of Jesus or the swarthy more Middle eastern caricature of Jesus or the angelic engraved on chapel walls image of the Christ, or are you just so close to him that you recall how he looks like from instant memory? I had no idea they had cameras back then, but at least now I can take comfort in knowing how he actually looked. My point is you can listen to a musician of this calibre and that is what you would leave as a comment?
I don't think Guthrie's music touches most people - that's why he's not in the charts etc. But the fact is that Shawn Lane's music doesn't touch most people. Who cares though? Just listen to what you want
nah don't worry i wasn't making accusation. i hate mtv cause they ruined the idea yeah, but they don't even show music on it anymore. i can't remember the last set of music videos played on that show. it used to be 24/7

He's hands down one of the best guitarist in the world.
Guthrie isn't underrated, he's just not well-known. He will be one day though.
Did someone predict the Aristocrats lol
Dude posted this 11 years ago and since there are at least 10 times the people who have discovered the best guitarist on the planet. Nice.
Mannnn, Guthrie is now one of the most famous guitarrist around the world, and work with amazing people, you knew it hahaha
The lick he plays at 3:17 is........un freakin' real.....One of the best players there is...
guthrie could improvise over some chords for a minute and it would be better than something i could write in a year....he is simply the best
holy fuck that solo was nuts had to replay that a couple times lol
he is unreal, his playing is so clear and full of soul,
John Shur guitars rock!!!!!!
i think the average person might think this music is odd, but a musician would definitely appreciate this. Not just guitarists.
i need a live album cd. watching him live is 1000x better than just audio
I need to either hang it up or get serious about guitar after watching this! Great doesn't begin to describe the skill level and musicality he possesses. His playing is unbelievably awesome and inspiring.
What a fantastic talent is Guthrie.. Bloody Poms can never do wrong...
Wow, what an awesome performance......This guy's the real deal. So dynamic, so melodic, and man, can he shred!!!
wow this version is incredible...so emotional & rocks!!!
Great performance here. This was improvised in a lot.. anybody who is familiar with the album and guthries live performances will know he never plays the songs identical to the album, theres a lot of improvisation going on, with only the key/memorable parts being played as on record.
What a joy!
Perfect match of tone/feelings/shreds. Very inspiring!
my favourite song off him
I think Guthrie is the most inventive improviser in the world at high speed....Brilliant!
Woops I clicked the wrong thumb :-) I agree, this version is certainly the best I've seen 4 now !
J'adore ce type, il faut qu'il vienne en France !
Fives (= 5) has 555 (Three fives = 3) likes, 5 (= 5)dislikes.
(5*3)= 15/5= 3
Half Life 3 confirmed
no way
hahahahahahahahahahaha
You just made me sad from 8 years in the past. We will never see a true successor to the Half Life games. 😢
que cara bom, tem como não !!
What gets me about this song, is overall it's not too difficult, but those two fast tapping licks, and the way he solos over the changes make the song incredibly hard!
Dave Kilminster, another great player who's done transcribing work for guitar techniques magazine as well as guthrie
that lil wayne bass solo
nice to hear him using a few fx for a change - even its just a few seconds t the beginning. Also he plays the first few time thru without overdrive! Sounds like Zappas Pink Napkins
Something 'interesting' happens at 2:08 .... - impressive - he's moving things forward - brought tears to my eyes - a privilege to here that.
lovin it
Ye I want to go see them when I get a chance to travel down from edinburgh
2:09 ...he was saying "sorry my mistake" ...humble being that he is ...what a hero!
yeah guthrie is awesome
multiple takes would make a nice addition, nice suggestion :-D
scary, this guy is scary good, fuckin awesome, damn, no more comments for now...
really good sound by the way, thanks for posting.

man hes like one of the best right now on earth, next to broderick
the solo was definitely improv'd n00b.
I love the drummer, playing tradition grip backwards. Neato. Oh, G is pretty good too....
Exelent :D
That's quite impossible to argue with. :P
i can see guthrie as the type of person that would be into metal
Extreme Fuck! Monster Variations!
Damn!!! This video broke my phone!!
3:16 What the actual fuck
+Chris Boyd Couldn't have said it better myself

Guthrie's music touches me in inappropriate ways when i am asleep.
Attention all haters and hijackers: Go away.
Guthrie is the guitar God of all styles, soulful or shred. That is all.
Bye.
this is what a pro should sound like
id love to see him do the tap in the studio version of fives if anyone's heard that lol.
My headphones exploded, such a bad way to end an eargasm
Geez, to put it mildly, in terms Mike Stern would use, this guy's is an "MF'r"! It's refreshing to hear a shredder that's actually musical and interesting.
If this is relentless shred, what isn't? This is very tasteful.
If I was hired as big G's touring rhythm guitarist, the first night would be the best of my life, then the constant humiliation would lead to an early demise.
GODDAMN kILLING tAPPINGS
hes playing is scary ...!!!!
This sounds like he's layering a clean tone with a dirty tone. Sounds pretty sick.
Hard to be on a list like that when you're missing so many fingers.
Great video.... But where's the bassist? The camera never goes to him during the whole video, EVEN when he's doing his little solo at 3:23 lol.
3:16 Buckethead style? Haha.
Exactly what I thought
I think buckethead stole..i mean borrowed (for me there is no stealing in music just borrowing) it from the great late Shawn lane ... Anyway good observation 👍👍
love the lick at 3:16.. :D
He looks like Dimebag,awesome player!
Is there a dvd of this somewhere? The sound and video quality is excellent (not to mention the playing!)
no after the extended pentatonic tap.. There's the solo where he does a load of tap patterns together
his chord voicing in 0:37..
remind me of eric johnson..
Apparently that's got something to do with octave displacement. I know what it is in theory but can't put it into practice yet.
3:16 Holy hell!
Hand of GOD
point taken lol.. guthrie takes all his time, because, he doesnt shave or cut his hair.. now that's dedication loll
3:17 to 3:19 What a lick....what a lick!!!
"but Music, I think, is best listened to eyes closed and mind open"
in what way does music television (mtv) NOT defeat that idea?
its a Suhr not sure what model though
Yeah I heard of that guy but I don't know him very well. I heard he plays with Roger Waters? Do you know any songs from Kilminster?
I want to MATE! with that tone PHWOAR! hahaha
Any chance of him headlining Glastonbury?
2:17-2:21 guthrie looks down at his hands and thinks... "god damn, look at that riff! that's fucking tight! i wish i could play that!" 2:23-2:26 overcome by a shocking realization... "wait a sec... holy tits, that's ME playing that!!! shit, i must be fucking jesus or something! i can't wait to see what i do next!"
@kewl2006 but like divide that by 6 and then ,ultiply the result by 13 times the square root of 73.
1:46 comprobado Guthrie Govan es humano
Fue intencional
4:10 OMGutrie!

Shawn.
time is so precious he spend every minute of it playing guitar rather than doing pointless stuffs such as having his hair cut... hahahaha
He plays Suhr guitars.
Mostro
Drums are low in the mix :( Neat video anyway!!
Five people dont like Fives... WHY? please give me a reason cause i cant find any THEY ARE AWESOME
Before the 1980s I'd have to go with django reinhardt.
1980's included it would be a close call between eric johnson and shawn lane.
I don't think Guthrie's music touches most people - that's why he's not in the charts etc. But the fact is that Shawn Lane's music doesn't touch most people. Who cares though? Just listen to what you want
